3:02 am
a foregone conclusion for presidential biden. she is on challenge, but he is facing trump with a really low approval ratings. right? that's right. no big surprises when it comes to super tuesday results on the democratic side. he's all about clinch the nomination, but you're right when it comes to the approval ratings, they're particularly low. let's take a look at those numbers. as of last month, president joe biden's approval rating had dropped to about 37 percent. that's according to our reuters, if so's pull it. it's stayed below 50 percent since 2021. that's the typical threshold for incumbent candidates who are seeking another term and did a poll that was conducted last month. mohammed 67 percent of respondents said that joe bided was simply too old to serve another term and only 34 percent said bite and is mentally fit for another 4 years. but the us media have often focused on
3:03 am
biden's age. well, the same poll also found, but 51 percent of respondents said that the former president, donald trump, is also not mentally fit for the presidency. and so that's why we really see the white house trying to focus on the accomplishments. they say, joe biden has achieved in the last 4 years and kimberly, when it comes to bite and we're hearing a lot these days about uncommitted folders, how much of a worry are uncommitted voters for president biden. and particularly in the us state of colorado. it's it's a major concern and here is why we've already seen it being a problem in the us state of michigan. that is where we saw and where there is a sizable error. but. a a can population more than a 100000 voters. they're voted uncommitted, and there's an option in a handful of states to do that again on super tuesday. but the reason that the
3:04 am
problem in colorado is much like we saw in michigan. there was a movement there to have a protest vote vote uncommitted over joe biden, support of israel and its war on gaza. and as a result, what we can see is lot of people voting uncommitted instead of voting. may typically voted for joe by then. but the reason it's even more of a problem for the state of colorado is that the supreme court as of monday, also voted to add favor president donald trump, to the ballot. so that's a double whammy for joe bite. and given the fact that not only is there that protest vote in that state, but also he has the added problem of having donald trump as a challenge or on the ballot as well. all right, thanks for breaking that all down for us. kimberly, that sounds here is kimberly how could live for us from the white house already from washington. let's now head to florida. that's where the republican front

runner donald trump is at the moment. and alan fisher is live for us from west palm beach. when trump is the republican front runner, but he's facing a lot of legal was he's facing numerous court cases. despite all that, is there anything that can stop him at this point as well, we're going to be looking very edlio and the results from vermont in virginia with the pulling close just in the last couple of minutes. that will be an indication on whether or not nicky healey can do any sort of breakthrough on super tuesday. the exit polls data suggesting that the me a lot of the people who voted in their public and primaries would actually either independence or democrats. in the case in virginia, what it is an open primary. and so nikki haley does well the then that might just cause donald trump to stumble, but essentially he's on a flight path to secure this nomination. it's historic what he's done. he's one

virtually every single contest. the only one you lost was the dc primary on sunday . now of course, there were many people who thought they would be able to defeat donald trump this time road. remember on desantis, the governor of florida, everyone thought he could possibly be the norman e. chris christie threw his hat into the ring, no buckler from new jersey. and there were many, many others who thought that this time they could be donald trump. 2 point, oh, same policies, but with a slightly more human face as some of them put to. but they find out that the republican party wasn't ready to leave donald trump. in fact, if an ethic, the republican party has become the party of donald trump, years ago, he entered politics as a sales style disruptor, fighting against the democrats and the republican establishment. donald trump is the establishment, at least for conservatives. effectively seizing control of one of the oldest
3:07 am
political parties in america. this was a hostile takeover. and so what you are seeing are people who are not necessarily republicans, but you are seeing people who are trapped loyalists. and so they have taken over the republican party despite losing a presidential election in 2020, his control is not even stronger. it punishes this loyalty. the new republican speaker in the house of representatives, our street was elected only one comp support. if one moment summed up crumbs complete control over this party, it was this. mitch mcconnell and good trump when he criticized them perusal in the january 6th, the sold on capitol hill. what do you notice? he was stepping down as the senate republican leader renewed his party, changed many false mist. understanding politics is not one of another. the who parked the mechanism the odd and see the republican national committee is expected to pass from someone who was loyal but no more. well enough

into the controlling hands of a huge trump supporter. i'm from his daughter in law adults in law, who said she would spend every penny to help donald trump in 2024. that was enough to anger one republican donald trump is now turning the republican party into his own. trump still faces 90. 1 criminal charges across 4 separate court cases. 2 supporters doesn't matter. they believe he's being politically targeted is pulling numbers go up. he makes frequent stumbles and errors doesn't matter. his numbers go up, and there's a warming to those who think if trump loses, then the republican party goes back to what it was. over the next 234, possibly even 5 presidential election cycles. people attempting to try to emulate donald trump and his profit get ways. most republican,

both to see the light comes policies and well, many suggest the wish, the park to to another stunted beer to the new for the moment. he's the only game in time. mikayla, you need something from super choose the she's aware that she's looking support because people think, well why would have vote for her if she's not going to be the know many and she's leaking money support. there's a saying why we're putting money into a campaign when there's no guarantee, we'll get anything back from it. she said she would continue until super tuesday. so she needs something from the next couple of hours, something concrete, something that she can point out and say, look, she is making a difference. her message is finally breaking through. but the reality is with the has started running, the donald trump has been on. i'm with all the poll suggesting that he's going to do incredibly well in the 15 states and territories on super tuesday. he's all, most definitely going to be the presumptive republican presidential know many for
3:10 am
the 3rd time. and the man who will take on joe, biting in november of the general election that's out there. 0 is alan fisher live for us from west palm beach in the state of florida. thanks so much alan. a. jennifer victor is a professor of political science at george mason university. she joins me from fairfax, virginia. jennifer, it doesn't look as though there are any big surprises in store this super tuesday. how unusual is it that both the democrats and the republican seemed to have their nominees before gone to conclusions even before super tuesday have played out? yeah, to me, that's kind of the story of this particular election day in the united states. where usually on a super tuesday, the reason we call it super is because it will be decisive, perhaps one way or another for one of the parties. but this year we have essentially 2 incumbent candidates who are competing for their parties. nominations,
3:11 am
and neither of them are particularly competitive. joe biden, as the sitting incumbent in office, doesn't have any real competition on the democratic side. and donald trump has a fairly significant hold over this way and the demo in the republican party. and so there isn't a lot of competition to go on here. it seems like it's just a matter of waiting for all the votes to get counted towards the end of primary season. and today is super tuesday, and that means that more states will allocate their delegates for these conventions towards these candidates in their parties than any other day on the calendar. but still, it's not a particularly decisive contest one way or the other. jennifer, there are polls that have been published the last couple of weeks to indicate that president biden's coalition at this stage is not as strongly behind him as trump's coalition is behind trump, how vulnerable is present and bite, and right now she definitely has some builder ability it does seem like the
3:12 am
enthusiasm behind the core republican supporters for trump are perhaps a little bit more enthusiastic than the core enthusiast ec supporters that biden has. and the democratic party that said, i think it's fair to say that campaign has barely started. we're not even in general election season yet. we're still in primary season. it's not at all unusual when you have the party where there's a little bit of a contest like you have in the republican party. now clearly isn't putting up a huge competitive contest for, for republicans, but there still is then a lot more campaigning going on in the republican side because of her contestation and, and others there. so it's not unusual to see a little bit more enthusiasm, more campaigning that has gone on in the party, where there's been more contest ation relative to the party where the nominee is a foregone conclusion. like you see in the democratic party, i would certainly expect all of us to look quite a bit different if we're talking and in early to mid summer. and the campaigns are in full bloom and both candidates or are out there trying to persuade all of the
3:13 am
voters and jennifer, you just mentioned, the republican side of things and specifically nikki haley is candidacy. i want to ask you, if you think that super tuesday would be making haley's last stand, because a lot of people that are, that are surprised that she's still in the race or, or she's going to be able to stay in the race even longer. and she says she wants to stay on the late race as long as she feels like she's competitive. it is possible that she's the only one who feels she's still competitive at this point and that's maybe just a line. in reality, she's probably going to stay in the raise as long as she can afford to, as long as she has enough financial backing to stay on the raise at this point. well, the way to think about it, i think, is that there are 2 factions in the republican party and for better or worse, there is the, the donald trump faction, which is the dominant faction. that's the largest faction. he's the one that's going to win the nomination, and then there's the haley facts, and this is the anti trump faction, and it's not small, it's a, it's a significant minority, but it is
3:14 am
a minority. and it does seem like that anti trump factions finally has a standard there. we've been in other election cycles where it seems like there was an anti trump faction that couldn't get themselves organized. and this year it seems like maybe it is coalescing around nikki haley which maybe suggest some, some progress there in the, in the republican party on their coordination tactics. that said, haley is not going to win this nomination in all likelihood. and what she's really doing is setting herself up as the sort of default next person find for republicans . jennifer victor, professor of political science at george mason university. thanks so much for joining us here on out of here. thank you. full of clothes in vermont in virginia. were joe biden, is one of the primary contest. let's take a look at our delegate tracker and see where donald trump and nikki haley are at the moment. donald trump has 273 delegates so far. nikki haley has 43. they need 1215 delegates to win the republican nomination, and on the democratic side,
3:15 am
joe biden, who has no real challenge or has the support of 246 pledged delegates. patrick elaine joins us now from richmond in virginia. patty, what are the numbers showing sofa? well, the poles have been close for 15 minutes and we usually get results fairly quickly . so far. we've only about a 1000 votes cast on the republican side. looks like donald trump has 72 percent to hailey's 25 percent. so we're going to hear more in the minutes in the, at the, at the come through the hour. we should probably have the results in the next hour . but interestingly, so this is an open product, so i could, it was not a virginia resident, but if i was, and i was registered to vote, i could walk in and say, i'd like to choose the democratic ballot or i'd like to choose the republican ballot. so, democrats and independents can vote in the republican primary and they have in
3:16 am
fairly large numbers, according to the exit polling. 60 percent of those voting in the republican primary identifies republicans 30 percent as independent and 10 percent as far as democrats . and i have spoken to several democrats. he says it's exactly what they were. although very interesting, you look at polls nikki haley very easily be joe biden, here in virginia, but donald trump in the polls. so it's going to be very interesting because this is really one of the best states for haley to make a stand because of that crossover. and because donald trump stuff very popular in virginia, so that's gonna be interesting. and here from the exit polling, the most fascinating thing that i've seen it in quite a while. so 40 percent of virginia republican primary voters said if donald trump is convicted of a crime, he would not be fit for president. 53 percent said if donald trump is convicted of any one of the $91.00 felony,
3:17 am
josie experiencing that he would still be fit for president. so although it might seem absolutely crazy, he said that many people say you have a fraud doesn't give you out of the white house, 40 percent is a huge number and that is going to worry the trump team. we know he's been trying to delay all these trials. it's still possible that the january 6 trial can go forward. we know the new york trial is going to go forward. so that is what they're going to be watching because this is expected to be a low selection. and if you have 40 percent of people in virginia said, i actually did not vote for me. he submitted of a crime and wouldn't fit for president. that could make all the difference in penny . what are some of the major issues from voters in virginia? the super tuesday across the board. the number one issue in virginia is the economy. 27 percent face. that is the biggest concern and i showed you earlier and walking around richmond. why that's such a
3:18 am
a factor here. i do, i kind of sit in the applauding job. i'm saying you found this off landing after, you know, there wasn't a recession. the job numbers look really great, but if you walk around richmond more blocks than not have just empty store for after empty store front of and talking to people. is that, is it always been like this? i don't remember richmond looking like this, and although it's been a while since i've been here, and they said no, that was the pandemic. it was so many restaurants, so many small business owners just went out of business and they haven't been able to rebuild. so what folders are looking at isn't looking around their time, medium sized sounds like here, which in the capital of virginia nursing, no, nothing but empty storefront. and then they're going to grocery store and paying $6.00 for a box of cereal. so the economy, the driving factor integration less so here is in, across the rest of the country. but still the 2nd issue installation, again is the serial issue. that's number 3. and abortion is actually the 4th was about 8 or 9 percent saying that's the most important mission to them come the
3:19 am
election. and that's really interesting in the commonwealth of virginia because in 2023 or the legislature was up for re election. and den democrats were able to slip it because they say of the concern that the governor wanted to put a ban abortion after 15 weeks. and so they credited their success for that democrats were really hoping that the issue of reproductive freedom was going to really drive home and drive them wins in november. right now, according to the polls and the people i'm talking to, that's not the biggest issue, not even close to being the biggest issue. all right, that's, i'll just hear his practical hand live from richmond. virginia. thanks so much pet . the still ahead on al jazeera, we looked at the film festival and deal habits, attracting emerging filmmakers from across the middle of the on march, the 7 us president, joe 5 and we'll deliver his state of the union address with issues like immigration,
