inaugural walls he is attending tonight. —— trump's arrival. there's violence before and after the inauguration. more than 200 people are arrested. others make their point more peacefully. welcome to the special programme. donald trump is now the 45th president of the united states. he was sworn in before several hundred thousand people on the steps of capitol hill in washington. in his inaugural speech, he said that from this day forward "it's going to be america first". that means buying american and hiring american. ending what he called the scourge of abandoned factories and rampant crime. announcer: ladies and gentlemen, the president—elect of the united states, donald john trump.

a scenario few scarcely thought possible, the billionaire reality tv host about to become commander—in—chief of the most powerful nation on earth. # america # it's a ceremony going back over 200 years that has changed little in that time. i, donald john trump, do solemnly swear. that i will faithfully execute. the office of president of the united states. and will to the best of my ability. preserve, protect and defend. the constitution of the united states. so help me god. with those 35 words the formality was complete but after that inaugural address there was anything but a continuation of tradition. the 45th president had won

a mandate to be a disrupter to politics as normal. today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, orfrom one party to another, but we are transferring power from washington dc and giving it back to you, the people. if the vips on the podium were starting to feel uncomfortable, president trump was just getting started. he painted a hellish picture of america, a very different picture to the one that barack obama was leaving behind. for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists. mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities. rusted—out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation. and an education system flush with cash but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge.

and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealised potential. this american carnage stops right here and stops right now. and then a message to the rest of the world — don't look to us to bail you out, we have different priorities now. we assembled here today, are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city in every foreign capital and in every hall of power. from this day forward a new vision will govern our land. from this day forward it's going to be only america first. america first. economic nationalism would be the order of the day. we will follow two simple rules.

buy american and hire american. and then an appeal for unity couched in these terms. it's time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget that whether we are black or brown or white we all bleed the same red blood of patriots. but surely if there is one takeout from this inaugural, it is that president trump fully intends to govern as he campaigned, uncompromisingly. together we make america strong again. we will make america wealthy again. we will make america proud again. we will make america safe again. and, yes, together we will make america great again. thank you, god bless you, and god bless america. thank you.

the crowds weren't enormous, certainly nothing like they were 8 years ago for barack obama's inauguration. but for those who had come, this was a day to remember. for others a day to forget. how painful this must have been for hillary clinton who polled three million more votes than donald trump, yet lost the electoral college. later, the new president would salute the person he vanquished. let me tell you. there is something i wanted to say because i was very honoured, very, very honoured when i heard that president bill clinton and secretary hillary clinton was coming today. i think it is appropriate to say and i'd like you to stand up. i'd like you to stand up. applause after the inauguration ceremony, the final act for the obamas. power had passed, they are

now private citizens. a us marine helicopter standing by to ferry them out of the city to start their new life. earlier this morning, one final act in the white house for the outgoing president. a handwritten letter to his successor. and then the formal welcome. barack obama and michelle greeting the new occupants of the house, donald and melania trump, and a gift to the outgoing first lady from her successor. and then the pose for posterity, the 44th and 45th presidents together. the ceremonial is over and the gladhanding for the moment is done. now donald trump is making his way along pennsylvania avenue back to the white house and the awesome responsibility of being president of the united states of america. and now the real work begins. the parade is another central piece of the pageant on inauguration day

with military bands marching through the streets. but this being donald trump there had to be one surprise, and it came as he was approaching the white house. he got out of the car near the fbi building, but more importantly right across the road from the trump international hotel. donald trump the businessman, and donald trump the president seemed to be going hand—in—hand. the day after his surprise election victory, barack obama said the world would keep on spinning, the sun would continue to rise. he's right, it has. but this morning, washington, america, and the rest of the world has woken to an uncertain new dawn. jon sopel, bbc news, washington. after the pomp and ceremony of the

day's events there are now the parties, one of which is this one, the liberty ball taking place at the washington convention centre. we knew president, the 45th president and the first lady, will be attending three more balls taking place in washington tonight. two of which will take place at the washington convention centre and one of them is taking place at the national building museum. that will be attended by members of the armed forces. but the one we are watching at the moment is the liberty and freedom ball. and of course the president getting ready will be making his way there. our correspondent laura trevelyan is there. tell us a little bit about the significance of the entertainment, because of course we are expecting the first dance and be first lady's

dress. yes, she was wearing ralph lauren earlier, who will she be wearing tonight? they will attend three balls tonight. they will attend the liberty and freedom ball, in the same convention centre in washington, and those are open to the public for $50, per ticket. so many trump supporters will be doing that. and then there's an invitation only armed services ball. but donald trump has already got to work and changed the drapes in the oval office. they are now yellow. and more significantly president trump has signed his first executive order, which tells all government agencies they must do what they can to ease the burden of president obama's healthca re law. to ease the burden of president obama's healthcare law. so he has got right to work. that's the impression he wants the public to give and this is his first executive order and he is trying to ease the

financial burden of that healthcare law as much as he can. also he has instructed his chief of staff to tell federal agencies that they must immediately freeze regulations. what regulations we don't know, no more details on that. but only hours after he has been sworn in and even before he celebrates, his inauguration as the 45th president, donald trump showing the nation that he is elected to do a job and he intends to do thatjob. he is elected to do a job and he intends to do that job. absolutely. during his inauguration speech he was very much focused on putting the united states first. what kind of message does this bring to the rest of the world? well, it is unclear exactly what america first means in practice. does it mean a return to protectionism? does practice. does it mean a return to protectionism ? does it practice. does it mean a return to protectionism? does it mean an america that doesn't stand with its allies in the way that it did in the past? remember, donald trump campaigned very clearly on wanting

nato members to pay a fair share towards that. he also objected to america's allies in the pacific, that they are not doing enough to pull their weight. so there's a lot of uncertainty. his supporters believe the message of america first is one they like and it means they are putting jobs —— he's putting theirjobs first. are putting jobs —— he's putting their jobs first. but this are putting jobs —— he's putting theirjobs first. but this moment marks a complete break with 70 years of american tradition, in which america has stood with its allies to defend human rights around the world. but now this is very firmly donald trump saying this is a new set of priorities. he referred to washington having failed the american people and what lies next, we will see. absolutely. thank you very much for the time being. laura

was also spending the whole day by the parade, so i am sure she will tell us more about that later in evening. she touched those executive orders that mr trump moved quickly to sign, including that decree against the obamacare health law and also the proclamation of a national day of patriotism. he also signed a waiver to allow the retired general james mattis to serve as defence secretary, even though it is less than the required seven years since he left the military. his appointment has been approved 98— one by the senate. john kelly has also been confirmed as secretary of homeland security. we will continue to monitor all appointees. do stay with us on bbc news. plenty more to come. a divided country, a divided capitol — we hearfrom both sides of the trump debate. the people of saigon have just heard there is to be a ceasefire.

stay with us on bbc news. this is bbc news. i'm kasia madera. the latest headlines: president donald trump has signed his first executive order in the oval office. tens of thousands of people watched the ceremony in front of the us capitol. but there have also been clashes in washington between police and people opposed to mr trump's presidency. as we've seen, tens of thousands of trump supporters witnessed the billionaire property tycoon‘s swearing in as president. but away from the ceremony at capitol hill and along pennsylvania avenue, violent clashes have been taking place between police and protesters opposed to president trump. ian pannell has spent the day with americans on both sides of the argument. # every little thing is gonna be all right # when american presidents are sworn in, it's usually a time at least to talk about healing divisions, but few have had such

divided states to try to reunite. on one side is team trump and hundreds of thousands of them turned out from across the land. once people see, give him a year, they'll see they have more money in their pockets and be like, whoa, this is a good deal, you know? we don't need anybody else talking, blah, blah, blah. i feel it's like asking president trump or wishing that he fails is like being on a plane he's piloting and hoping it crashes. you know? he's president, so you've got to hope for the best now. an underground movement of the disillusioned and dispossessed rallied around the trump campaign. today, they came from parts of the country many feel have been forgotten. emerging to the dawning of a very different day in america. i think it's going to bring a new era of hope and prosperity for our country.

the thing i like about donald trump is he's an alpha male. as opposed to our previous president commander—in—chief. he is an alpha male, he's a shaker and a mover. he has no other agenda than to do the right thing, basically. which is pretty much the opposite of what today's protesters think as they swarmed past a car of trump supporters. who are you? bbc news. i am a trump supporter. london. awesome. i can see the mask. we are conservative, and love america. this is ridiculous. you don't think they have a right to object and protest? at the right time, not this, there's no class in this. usa! there was anger on the streets of the capital today, but even more striking was the sense of fear about what the next four years will bring.

hundreds of people have converged in washington dc to protest the inauguration of donald trump. this is a real expression of the anger felt across america by many people. some of them are objecting to the policies that donald trump plans to introduce. others question the very legitimacy of the 45th president. not my president! they may have lost the election but don't expect divisions to heal any time soon. ifeel a little bit afraid, mostly for my communities. you said you feel scared. what are you apprehensive about? i think there's a lot of people who are vulnerable in our country who are going to suffer under this presidency. from anger to violence. some businesses were attacked by a small group of protesters. dozens were arrested. it seems donald trump will have to work hard to be president of a united states of america. ian pannell, bbc news, washington.

certainly the start of a new era. it's certainly the start of a new era, with a man best known for his role in a reality television show now residing in the white house. with me is american commentator carol gould, who's been watching her homeland from this side of the atlantic here in london. of course, there are going to be festivities tonight. he has got a lot to do. talk about some of the things on his plate, maybe some of the positive things. we have heard that in the last when he for allah is he is proposing and i believe he has signed, it hasn't been confirmed, —— the last 2a hours he is proposing and i believe you are signed, it hasn't been confirmed, a missile defence system, space age

state—of—the—art system, some have interpreted it as tom 0, creating missiles to attack people, it isn't, it is to protect the united states. whether that is good or bad, that is something he has decided as a priority —— interpreted it as, oh. the other thing is tpp, the trans—pacific partnership, this is barack obama's trans—pacific partnership, this is ba rack obama's baby. trans—pacific partnership, this is barack obama's baby. he doesn't want to get rid of it, it will go ahead with asian countries trading with other asian countries. he doesn't wa nt to other asian countries. he doesn't want to be part of that. he thinks it is taking jobs away from america. it is antagonistic against other countries, isn't it? yes, and interestingly enough, bernie sanders was for not getting involved with tpp, and also getting rid of nafta, the north american free trade agreement, trump also wants to get rid of that because it brings jobs

back to america and it antagonises other countries, in that case mexico and canada. so it is an interesting thing that he feels these are priorities. he has already started the ball rolling on dismantling the affordable care act. bernie sanders, no matter how vitriolic it was, trump was never rude about bernie sanders. he never made fun of him, never traduced him, he said that the dnc, democratic national committee, it is stitched up, he used the expression, they stitched bernie up. he felt he was treated unfairly. he is going to need bernie sanders in the senate. bernie sanders is a very powerful voice. highly respected. the senate. bernie sanders is a very powerfulvoice. highly respected. he has been in washington for 20 years. he will need him to support his programmes. to get democrats to support his programmes. bernie sanders is an independent. there is another issue, i am playing devils advocate on behalf of trump,

pharmaceuticals companies, this was not reported, they reported on the daft things he said, but one sensible thing is he wants to break up sensible thing is he wants to break up the pharmaceutical companies, he wa nts to up the pharmaceutical companies, he wants to bring them to book, he wa nts wants to bring them to book, he wants them to bid, rather than to say to insurance companies and americans, this is what you will pay for drugs. it is the most expensive country in the world for medication. again, bernie sanders, the week before in his pack town hall appearance on cnn said we must do something about breaking up the drug companies and bringing down prices for americans —— packed town hall. he will get a bit of support from democrats. 0k, well, listen, we will leave it on that positive note. it will be interesting to see what happens going forward, but thank you very much. watching the united states from this side of the atlantic. let's go back to laura trevelyan in washington. laura, you were there for the whole

of the parade. just tell us a little bit about some of what happened today. what was the atmosphere like? it wasn't fully crowded. that is right. it was a fascinating atmosphere. of course, there were joyful, thrilled supporters, that their man has been elected, but some donald trump supporters i spoke to wished he had used his inaugural address to reach out to those who didn't vote for him, the majority of voting americans, in fact, who didn't vote for him, remember, he lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes, so there was a subdued sense, fewer people than at previous inaugurations i have been two and a heightened sense of the divisions in the nation underlined by the presence of lots of protesters around the inaugural parade and also many tens of

thousands of protesters expected to mass in washington tomorrow for the women's march, defending women's rights, especially women's reproductive rights in the era of president trump. it was an interesting atmosphere. not quite so joyful, perhaps, as president obama's inauguration, but these are divided times and it most certainly reflected that. but tonight it is a celebratory moment, of course. we're gonna go from the protests today and those coming in to protest to the bulls president trump is going to attend, and this is the moment that he gets to celebrate his unexpected and what even to him probably seemed until the moment it happened like an unlikely victory —— balls president trump. and in a word, of course, there are three balls he is going to attend, and we've been waiting for the dance. absolutely, and he will

cold and frosty starts in the south of britain. converting to gloriously sunny days in many spots. and here is the variety that i was talking about. in the flow of high—pressure we have had, the weather front, it has produced cloudy and murky conditions for many at times. wales, the midlands, and at times, it has gone a little bit further north and east, which means it will be a player in the east of the british isles on saturday. cloud in parts of devon and cornwall. keeping the frost at bay for some here. underneath those clear skies, i do not doubt any of those in the countryside on the borders between england and wales will be recording temperatures on the first part of saturday at —5, —6, something of that order. it will be a bright start across a good part of scotland. but as a consequence, a frosty one. as i was saying, the cloud

from that old weather front still lurking in the north sea. as the day progresses, it mayjust come into play a little bit further into central parts of england. may be getting into the scottish borders as well. if you are underneath that, you may find the higher ground may have some snow. that will not be an issue for the fourth round of the scottish cup. some cloud further south into england for the premier league. and then it is something of a hit and miss with regards to the night—time frost, taking you from saturday into sunday. the north of scotland should see some frost. so should the southern counties of england. here we are into sunday. watch out for the odd patch of fog around. as i said, something of a patchwork. we have an area of cloud producing showers outbursts of rain here. may be a patch of ice. summer showers in the eastern shores. temperatures, again,
