hello there. welcome to sportsday with me, will perry. coming upforyou, a rohit sharma record—breaking century fires india to victory over afghanistan at the cricket world cup. wayne's world at st andrew's as rooney hopes to take birmingham city to the next level. and wales cruise past gibraltar in a friendly, with a debut for a son of a familiar welsh face.
12:46 am
welcome along. so rohit sharma's record—breaking century fired india to an eight—wicket victory over afghanistan at the cricket world cup. afghanistan were 63—3 when captain hashmatullah shahidi and azmatullah omarzai put on 121 on the fourth wicket. but jasprit bumrah*s 4—39 reduced them to 272—8 in delhi. rohit sharma then hit 131 from 84 balls, his seventh world cup ton — a new record, beating the six of the legendary sachin tendulkar. india reached their target with 15 overs to spare. it's a second defeat in two games for afghanistan. two wins from two for india. every team will have batsmen. every team will have bowlers. we also have batsmen. we also have bowlers. we're not preparing any special for any special team. yes, we're looking at ourselves more than the others, because we realise that if we focus on our team, we focus on our strengths,
12:47 am
everything else takes care of itself. so we are focusing on our team, our preparation. if everything that is there in our control, we control that, that gives us the best chance. so that is what our team is focusing on. it's international week with plenty of exciting euro qualifiers taking place, butjust the one game on wednesday, and wales have beaten gibraltar 4—0 in a friendly. rob page handed a debut to charlie savage, the son of former wales international robbie, and he assisted the second goal for kieffer moore after ben davies' opener. nathan broadhead then added a third with a great finish before moore got his second to wrap up the win. wales face croatia in a euro 2024 qualifier on sunday. scotland are within touching distance of qualifying for euro 24. avoiding defeat against spain in seville on thursday will do it for them. or if norway fail to beat cyprus, the tartan army can start booking their flights to germany. jane dougal has more.
12:48 am
i think we'll lose by two at least. scotland fans are in an unusual position, and they're enjoying the ride. with five wins from five, theyjust need to avoid defeat to spain and they're no longer sightseeing, they're going to next year's euros. we want to make it six out of six. can we qualify? i think we can. it does seem a bit surreal because you would never expect scotland to be topping a table containing spain, you know, and so close to qualifying. when they played spain at hampden in march, two goals from scott mctominay gave scotland a famous victory. but their vice captain isn't complacent about this match. the job's not done yet. we come to what will be on paper the toughest game that each team in the group will face. so we know we need to be at our best, but the beliefs there now to not hope to qualify, but let's be a regularfixture in these tournaments for years to come. on so many occasions, scotland have eitherjust
12:49 am
missed out orjust scraped into a tournament. but later, in this stadium, more than 3,800 members of the tartan army could watch scotland automatically qualify for a major tournament for the first time in 25 years. scotland don't plan to be tourists in this competition. they want a permanent seat at the table. come on, scotland. jane dougal, bbc news, seville. well, england face australia in a friendly on friday before a euro qualifier at home to italy next tuesday. and england's defender harry maguire says a phone call from david beckham meant everything, after he was jeered by scotland fans last month. the manchester united defender scored an own goal in a 3—1win, but says he's been encouraged by beckham, who suffered plenty of abuse himself after being sent off at the *98 world cup. about three weeks ago, after the scotland game, he got in touch with me, so it was really nice of him and i really appreciated that. throughout my career, david beckham is someone who
12:50 am
i looked up to and i watched when i was a young boy. unfortunately i didn't end up on the right wing and scoring and assisting as many goals as he has. but yeah, he was a big role model when i was growing up and now i think itjust shows how classy he is to reach out to me. and obviously a lot of people are speaking about me at the moment, but obviously to see what he went through and the resilience that he's shown, what he did reminded me of the career that i've had to date and the big moments i've had in my career. and i think, like i say, when you're going through tough moments, you've got to think on past experiences and past memories and where you've gone in your career and what you've been through. like i say, every career is so up and down. and especially when you reach what i've reached in terms of being the captain of the biggest club in the world for three and a half years. and he's been in that position and he knows what it's like.
12:51 am
and obviously i watched the documentary and i couldn't believe how much he went through at the time. so, yeah, i know in the documentary gary neville speaks a lot about how resilient he is as a person. and, you know, i think he's been a huge role model for many footballers growing up, especially in my era. wayne rooney says he wants to take birmingham city to the next level after being named the new manager of the english second tier side. rooney left dc united in the mls at the weekend after they failed to make the play—offs. and he replacesjohn eustace, who guided birmingham to sixth in the championship after 11 games. the former england striker says: "we'll create a winning culture with an identity that gets blues fans on their feet." it's been 12 years since birmingham last played in the premier league. luton town have given the former crystal palace and england winger andros townsend a short—term contract untiljanuary. townsend, who's 32 now, had been close to joining burnley, but he was out of contract. didn't play for everton last season because of a serious knee injury.
12:52 am
he joins luton with the club 17th in the premier league table. we're getting closer to a huge weekend for the remaining three home nations at the rugby world cup. ireland have the standout quarter—final, don't they? the number one side in the world will face three—time champions new zealand at the stade de france. coach andy farrell has been able to name an unchanged xv to take on the all blacks. gavin andrews is with the ireland squad. with the pool stages wrapped up at this world cup, ireland are on a roll. they've won 17 in a row and are now slight favourites to topple the mighty all blacks on saturday night. andy farrell seems to have a template for success, and it's more of the same in terms of selection from the head coach. wingers mack hansen and james lowe have proved their fitness, having picked up knocks against scotland last weekend. in an unchanged pack, iain henderson maintains his partnership with tadhg beirne in the second row. joe mccarthy comes on to the bench for the injured james ryan, andjimmy o'brien gets his first opportunity of the tournament.
12:53 am
this is a squad confident they can deliver. it's the big boys' stuff, isn't it? it's the business end of the competition. and when you get to those points in a competition, then you draw hopefully on the good experiences that you've had, and the experiences that we've put ourselves under in the last three or four years. they're for moments like this, so we've got a very experienced group that's been through a lot, and learning to deal with weeks like last week and this week is something that we've got pretty good at. so you draw on those experiences. trying to win a world cup, it's something to go and get. it's not something that puts pressure on me. it's something that you dream of. probably not as a kid, because when we were kids, we didn't dream of ireland winning the world cup. i suppose we've put ourselves in the position now to go and do that, but it's something to go and get. it's not something to be pressured about. and i haven't thought about my own career, to be honest.
12:54 am
i'll think about it more when i finish. it's all geared up towards a massive game on saturday. massive challenge for this team, the biggest we faced, and we're looking forward to it. one more victory would see ireland equal the record run of consecutive wins in the top tier of the sport. to do it on the way to a first ever world cup semi—final would properly break new ground. gavin andrews, bbc news, paris. well, that takes place in saint—denis, as will france against south africa. wales face argentina in marseille on saturday and england will be there for their quarter—final against fiji on sunday. england lost to the pacific islanders for the first time in august. forward jamie george told our rugby union correspondent chrisjones how that will motivate them. yeah, quarter—final is huge and, you know, opportunity to put a few things right because obviously that fiji game was shocking to say the least. so yeah, we make sure,
12:55 am
you know, we take lessons from that and and be a better team this week. twickenham games on your mind the one from august? yeah, it is, ithink it's probably would be wrong of us to sort of try and dismiss it. we're a better team, a much better team now than we were then. but, you know, ithink there are some clear things that we had to take away from that and kevin sinfield has been very clear about reminding us, showing us a few clips that hurt, you know what i mean? like when you watch us defend like that, that's always going to hurt. so he showed us a few clips and made sure that, you know, we're fully aware that, you know, we probably owe them one. looking forward to that game. that's jamie george with rugby union correspondent chris jones. don't forget, you can get all the latest sports news from the bbc sport app or from our website as well. that's bbc.co.uk/sport, but for me and the rest of the team at the bbc sports centre,
12:56 am
goodbye for now. hello. some fresh autumn weather on the way. chilly even for some of us in northern parts of the uk, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. it's been so mild across many parts of the country so far this month. so we're back to really where we should be this time of the year. so this is what's happening on thursday. this is the air mass, the temperature of the atmosphere. so still some warmth and humidity across the south. in fact, temporarily thursday into friday, we'll see a resurgence of that warmth as the wind direction changes temporarily from the southwest. but then, come saturday and sunday, it's a northerly and that autumn chill arrives, touch of frost across northern areas by night, even a little bit of wintry ness a little bit of wintriness across the scottish hills. so let's have a look at the forecast then through the early hours, really quite cloudy and wet across some southern parts of the uk.
12:57 am
but to the north of that, it's generally clear and chilly. in the glens of scotland, temperatures barely above freezing, but most of our northern towns and cities around three to four degrees celsius. in the south, on the south coast, it's still really quite mild, sort of remnants of that warmth left over, but a lot of cloud during the day, little dribs and drabs of rain. and then i think across much of yorkshire, northern ireland, the bulk of scotland, a bright if not sunny day, just scattered fairweather clouds, 13, 1a, still 18 in the south. but then come the evening, widespread heavy rain sweeps into many parts of england and wales, a really wet thursday night into friday, really complicated weather map. on the one hand, we have a weather front coming in, a low pressure from the south and we've got a cold front coming in from the north. you can just about see it here. so i think for a time wet in the morning on friday, temporarily that warmth, it literally clips the southeast, with temperatures up
12:58 am
to 20 in london, 19 in norwich. but the colder autumn air arrives in scotland, northern ireland and northern england as well. so it's a northerly temporarily, but northerly, but then into next week, high pressure builds and we're right in the middle in the centre of this area of high pressure. so that means the winds will be generally light, there'll be a lot of sunshine around. so it's going to feel very, very pleasant indeed. i think a lot of crisp autumn sunshine on the way. that's it for me. bye bye.
