2:45 am
hello, i'm mark edwards, welcome to sportsday. here is what we've got coming up on the show: spain spoil the scottish celebrations in seville — a win for the hosts means scotland still not totally assured euro 2024 qualification. it's a record breaking defeat as south africa trounce australia. their woeful world cup still without a win. as wales name their team, we look ahead to the tantalising quarter final ties this weekend at the rugby world cup. hello and thanks for joining us on sportday. we start in seville as scotland's bid to become the first side to qualify
2:46 am
for euro 2024 was stopped short by spain, the hosts winning 2—0 on a controversial night. needing just a point to secure qualification, scotland took a 1—0 lead in the second half only for the goal to be ruled out. steve clarke's side had nothing to show for weathering the worst of the spain storm as jane dougall reports from seville. so it wasn't to be tonight for scotland but that goal that wasn't will probably be talked about fora while to come. about for a while to come. the first half, spain dominated, putting chance after chance towards scotland, which they defended with their lives. and then scott mctominay*s perfectly placed freekick which delighted the crowd was ruled out. there was a debate as to whether it was a foul or off side. mctominay was furious at the decision. scotland's heads then went down and spain quickly took advantage and they took their chance, morata scoring in the 72nd minute.
2:47 am
just after that, adams could have got them the point. he was through on goal but he just could not finish, sending the ball straight to the keeper. after that, mistakes started to creep in to scotland. there was a slip in the box. it was aaron hickey who gave away possession and spainjust pounced again. but there are several ways that scotland can still qualify. spain now play norway on sunday and if they draw or win, then scotland will go through. and if that does not happen, then scotland still have two group games in which to get two points that they will then need. fans will have to wait a little longer to celebrate. we have done a lot of work to get 15 points from 6 games it is now. and if spain — if norway don't get anything against spain on sunday night, we qualify on sunday night. but we don't qualify because norway don't get anything from spain, we qualify because of what we have done
2:48 am
to have 15 points sitting here. if norway win the game, then we go to november with a realistic chance of topping the group. well, in that group norway have given themselves a lifeline to keep the pressure on spain and scotland courtesy of their headline act, erling haaland. the manchester city strike with 2 goals in norway's 4—0 victory over cyprus. the norwegians must beat spain on sunday or scotland will go through automatically, another significant result from thursday's qualifiers. turkey are top of group d after beating croatia 1—0, baris alper yilmaz scoring the only goal. uefa president aleksander ceferin has written to the head of israel's football association to express his condolences for what he's described as "the tragic acts of violence" in israel. he says that, "pain and sorrow are profound and resonate "across the entire football community". israel were due to face switzerland in tel aviv on thursday but that has been moved to next month and their euro qualifier
2:49 am
in kosovo on sunday has also been postponed. a period of silence will be held before england's friendly game with australia at wembley in london on friday as well as wear black armbands. in a statement, the football association say it's "to remember the innocent victims of the devastating "events in israel and palestine." the fa also say that supporters at wembley will only be able to bring in flags, replica kits and other representations of nationality for the competing nations. the fa would have consulted with everybody they possibly can. they would have tried to make the best decisions with the best intentions. clearly, whatever decision they came to would have been criticised in one way or another and i also recognise how difficult it was for them. i was not involved in those discussions. they were long and went on for a long time.
2:50 am
but they have decided to take the stance they have and we will get on with that. former spain women's head coachjorge vilda has been named the new head coach of the morocco women's national team. vilda has been out of work since he was sacked after spain won the world cup. his departure followed the fallout after football association president luis rubiales kissed spain forward jenni hermoso on the lips during a medal ceremony. hermoso says the kiss was not consensual, which rubiales denies. cricket now and australia have suffered their heaviest ever world cup defeat. south africa putting in a ruthless performance to hammer them by 134 runs in india. quentin de kock put the proteas in the driving seat with a masterful century his second successive ton in 2 matches at the world cup. and on a thoroughly miserable day for the aussies, they paid the price for a terrible performance in the field. five catches dropped in total, to help south africa reach

311 for 7. it didn't get much better for the 5—time champions with the bat. australia slumping to 70—6 before being bowled out for a measly 177. and while its impossible to know how this would have affected the outcome but there was a controversial decision to give marcus stoinis out after south africa called for a review, which left australia 70—6 in their chase. third umpire richard kettleborough deemed the right—hander had gloved kagiso rabada down the leg side, but replays suggested stoinis* hand was off the bat when the ball grazed that glove. i initially thought it hit his thigh pad and my teammates around me felt that he definitely — they felt they had a woody sound.
2:52 am
marcus stoinis didn't look conving. i think he looked as if he felt as if he'd touched it. i guess the controversy was around the fact that his hand was off the bat when the ball made contact with his glove but we thought it was the bat handle. again, that is not up to us. we reviewed it and the umpires made a decision. the international olympic committee's executive board has suspended the russian olympic committee with immediate effect until further notice. the announcement comes after the roc tried to incorporate four ukrainian territories illegally annexed by russia since its invasion began last year — something that breached the olympic charter. the ioc added that it will decide on whether neutral russian athletes can compete at paris 2024 at the appropriate time. to the rugby world cup in france and ahead of the monumental quarter final match ups in marseille and paris over the weekend, wales have announced their team to face argentina in the last 8 and two of their big game players are available.
2:53 am
it's great news for welsh fans as dan biggar and liam williams have both been declared fit. they both start. while george north will become the first welsh player to appear in 4 world cup quarter finals when he lines up in marseille on saturday. arguably the match of the weekend sees the worlds number1 team, ireland, take on 3—time champions, new zealand. the irish are favourites but can they beat their world cup hoodoo. andy swiss looks ahead to the tastiest of ties. ireland against new zealand has the potential to be the match of the tournament so far. ireland the world number one on this incredible winning streak, winning their last 17 matches but they have this incredible statistic as well that they have never gone beyond the quarter—finals of a rugby world cup and, of course, in new zealand they are up against one of the iconic names in world rugby.
2:54 am
yes, new zealand lost the opening match against france but since then they have got 240 points in their last three matches, so an average of 80 points a game over those three games. new zealand have not had a great recent record against ireland. ireland have had the better of them recently but ireland know the all blacks have a point to prove. england will name their team on friday ahead of sunday's quarter final clash with fiji in marseille and it seems that head coach steve borthwick will make his boldest calls yet. owen farrell is set to take george ford's place at 10, with the orchestrator of england's opening 2 victories dropping to the bench, while march smith is expected to replace freddie steward at 15. meaning england's ever present full back may potentially miss out on the 23 man squad altogether. to tennis and two of america's brightest young talents clashed for the first time as ben shelton and sebastian korda went head to head
2:55 am
in the last 8 of the shanghai masters in china. korda saw off shelton in 3 sets. shelton reached the semi finals of the us open last month but it was korda who prevailed 6—7, 6—2, 7—6. the world number 26 into his first ever masters 1000 semi—final. he'll face polands hubert hurkatch next. and finally, the draw has been made for group stage of the delayed 2023 africa cup of nations in ivory coast next year. holders senegal have drawn cameroon in group c, where they will also face neighbours the gambia and guinea. you can find all the details on our website — that's bbc.co.uk/sport from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. well, so far this month,
2:56 am
many parts of the country have been experiencing unseasonably warm weather but now the transition to something colder is upon us and before that happens, a lot of rain through the early hours across many parts of england and wales. the colder weather has already reached scotland and northern ireland. the colder winds are coming in from the north, so clearer spells here and colder in the morning, but across the bulk of england and wales it's overcast, outbreaks of rain heavy at times. this is the weather front and once it clears away, that colder weather will sweep in from the north. so still a very mild morning in the south, the mid—teens. and then it's difficult to summarise the weather through friday across england and wales because it will change quite a bit from heavy rain to sunny spells, perhaps some thunderstorms, gusty winds. it's about 50 miles an hour on the south coast. so really changeable picture on friday across england and wales. but scotland and northern ireland hear different story, scattered clouds, a few showers, windy, cold winds in the north and temperatures around 12 degrees there in edinburgh. so once that weather front clears away friday
2:57 am
night into saturday, it opens up the doors to those cold winds coming in from the north. nothing particularly unusual for the time of the year. it's just that it's going to be quite a shock to the system, especially for those of us that have been experiencing these high temperatures so far this month. so here it is saturday. the winds are coming in from the north now for a change rather than from the south. and these are the temperatures on saturday 14. so a degree maybe also around the average, colder than average i think in aberdeen around eight degrees celsius. and then saturday night into sunday, the winds will fall light in the centre of the country and with clear skies, that means cold weather, a touch of frost, i think even barely above freezing in rural spots in the south of the country. but with that and with an area of high pressure building over the uk, it's going to be fabulously sunny apart from some showers in the northwest of scotland, but below average temperatures i think across the board, whether you're in the north or the south, it'll be around say 10, 10 to 13 degrees. and that high pressure is with us monday and into tuesday. we're right in the middle of that high. that means light winds, perhaps a touch of frosts and murky, foggy mornings.
2:58 am
but i think towards the end of the week, it looks as though things could turn a little more unsettled and once again, a little milder. that's it for me. bye— bye.
