welcome to bbc news. the israeli army has recovered the body of a hostage in gaza during an overnight operation. it accused the islamichhad group of murdering the man, who's been identified as elad katzir. he was kidnapped from a kibbutz in the south of israel in attacks led by hamas militants on october the seventh. during that assault, his father was murdered, while his mother was abducted then later released. the israeli army said the body of elad katzir was retrieved from the khan younis area of southern gaza. it said its mission to search for hostages, and return them to israel, would continue. allison kaplan sommer is a journalist at israeli newspaper haaretz. she said the news has been greeted with dismay by the families

of israeli hostages. they want their hostages back. they want them alive. as many as still remain alive. and the mood was encapsulated by a facebook post from elad katzir�*s sister, she posted... basically, she was the one who announced as much as the israeli army announced that her brother's body had been recovered and returned to israel. and she wrote on facebook, "you're going to hear from the army about their daring rescue operation "in which they got my brother's body and returned it to israel." and she said, "don't let anyone fool you. "this is not a rescue operation. "this is an incident of my brother having been abandoned to die. "the first abandonment took place when the military did not "move into the kibbutz from which he was kidnapped, in time, and he was kidnapped." and there were two videos released of her brother alive and in captivity. so they know that he did not die on october 7th,

that he was killed by his captors, by islamichhad, who was handing him. and she said, "make no mistake, this is a failure of the israeli "government to have achieved a hostage deal that would have "brought my brother back alive and instead i'm getting his body." and you have to understand, this is a woman writing whose mother was taken hostage. she was returned in the first hostage deal and whose father was killed and murdered by hamas on the kibbutz on october 7th. so this is a family that was completely devastated by the attack. and she's been fighting for her brother's release for months. and now she gets the news that that she gets a body back and not her brother back alive. so it's certainly not viewed as any kind of reason for celebration. our middle east correspondent hugo bachega told me about the reaction to the discovery of the hostage�*s body. you can imagine the agonising wait of the families of the hostages. more than 100 israelis remain in captivity in gaza and almost every day these families have been demonstrating urgently urging

the government and benjamin netanyahu to engage in negotiations with hamas, to strike a deal for the hostages to be released. the fact another hostage has been found dead is adding to the desperation of these relatives. we understand tomorrow hamas will send a delegation to cairo in an apparent effort to restart these negotiations being mediated by doha and cairo in an attempt to reach a deal between israel and hamas. we understand for weeks there have been conversations and these are very difficult talks, there have been in a number of obstacles and differences remain between both sides. any kind of deal would see the release of hostages in return for palestinians who remain in israeli jail. we understand that one of the main obstacles in these negotiations is that hamas continues to demand a permanent ceasefire, not a temporary one but a permanent ceasefire in gaza and also that

the tense phone call betweenjoe biden and benjamin netanyahu. in which the us president essentially gave the israeli government and ultimatum. protect civilian life, to do more to protect the humanitarian situation in gaza otherwise the situation in gaza otherwise the situation will change. we don't know the details exactly of that. what joe biden threatened to withdraw from israel. but there has been speculation that perhaps he said that conditions would be attached to the supply of us military aid for israel. but near hours after that phone call we got the announcement from the israelis that they would be reopening or widening the three—minute hearing aid cottages. biden has giving himself a bit of a pattern about publicly about that, seeing i asked the israelis to do this, they did it. but we know he

made other demands in the phone call that the israelis have not yet fulfilled. butjoe biden is under pressure from all sides of on israel as we have seen from the letter, many democrats are not happy with the extent of support for israel but republicans too in congress have accused mr biden of abandoning key allies, backing hamas over israel, and remember it is also an election year here and that plays into everything, it is shaping up to be particularly closely fought and polarising campaign and the war in gaza has become a large issue, traditionally democratic voters, joe biden�*s party are extremely unhappy with the support the biden administration offers for israel. many of minority voters, young people, exactly the sort of people thatjoe biden needs to wind over he

good afternoon. storm kathleen dominated weather headlines in recent days. the storm arrived last night and yes, it's bringing gale force gusts of winds in the far northwest. it's also tapping in to some very warm air indeed. now, so far today, we have seen a gust of wind in excess of 90 mile an hour on the tops of cairngorm. yes, but even at lower levels through northern ireland, down to the isles of scilly, we've had gusts in excess of 60, close to 70 mile an hour. so the storm is anchored way out to the west of the uk and that's allowing this south—westerly wind to push up some very warm airfrom africa. and so temperatures really quite a dramatic difference, particularly in scotland where just a few days ago we were seeing a maximum of five degrees, not that much in the way of rain around for the rest of the day. sunny spells and scattered showers. there will be quite a lot of cloud around from time to time and it will stay windy. so inland we're looking at around 45 mile an hour plus winds out
