in what could be his farewell at the tournament. hello there, and welcome along to the programme. and the semi—finals for the champions league are complete — after another evening of high drama which saw the holders manchester city go out on penalties to real madrid at the etihad. the game was level 1—1 on the night, and level on aggregate with the 14—time champions holding their nerve in the shoot—out. andy swiss was there for us. but what a dramatic night here at the etihad stadium. real madrid and manchester city began with a teams all square at 3—3after the first leg.
12:46 am
real madrid took the lead during the first half with a goalfrom rodrigo. with 15 minutes left, though, city equalised through kevin de bruyne. the game went into extra time, no goals in extra time. and so to the drama of a penalty shoot out, and bernardo silva and kovacic both had their penalties saved, and in the end it was antonio rudiger that fired the winning penalty for real madrid. so they go through to the semi—finals. manchester city's defence of their european crown is over. football is about score goals and they did it a little bit better in the penalty spot than us. so. but i have the duty to say thank you for the of my heart to these players, the way they played the play against that team and the way we play. but this is about results, the business and they will be in semi—finals. we are not for little margins,
12:47 am
but the performance and everything, the commitment for everything was exceptional and real will meet bayern munich in the semi's on april 30th after the german side got the better of arsenal, in their quarter final second leg at the allianz arena. bayern*sjoshua kimmich scored a superb header sealed it in the second half. bayern through the semi's for the first time in four years, with a 3—2 aggregate victory.... ian dennis was watching in munich. bayern munich, deservedly through to keep their season alive. joshua kimmich s powerful header on the run after 63 minutes. the only goal, but they were the better side in the second half. the germans, after the restart, hit the post twice in a matter of seconds. goretzka header and then guerrero*s deflected shot. gabriel almost scored an own goal. at the other end, arsenal never really looked like scoring in the second period to build on the promise of a tight first half. lima was outstanding for bayern munich in midfield as arsenal's champions league campaign petered out. away at wolves on saturday. they must ensure the same doesn't happen
12:48 am
in the premier league. we had our moments, especially in the first half. in the second half, we struggled a little bit more to keep that rhythm, that momentum, with the changes we tried in a different way and then never games with big, big chances. very rare to see that at this stage in the champions league, but is the moment to be next to our players, to thank them for the journey and that we both together unfortunately ended today. it is painful, but we have to learn from it. the newly crowned bundesliga champions bayer leverkusen are away at west ham on thursday for the second leg of their europa league quarterfinal tie. leverkusen, under xabi alonso, are having a stunning season they're still unbeaten in all competitions — and go into the match 2—0 up from the first leg. alonso knows they can't take their opponents lightly though. i can feel the hunger, the desire of these players, of this team that to keep going, not to stop.
12:49 am
and for sure, we are pushing for that. we have a big challenge tomorrow, but for sure we are going to be ready. if we don't go through. it's not going to be because we don't have the mentality. it's because football can happen. but i have all the confidence. we come in a humble way, but in a very confident way to to play good and to go through. we had the experience last year of reaching the semifinal, and we want to go even further this year another english side looking to make a comeback will be liverpool, who have to overturn a three—goal deficit in italy against atalanta to progress to the semi—finals. managerjurgen klopp insists that his side have nothing to lose in the second leg. everybody thinks it's already decided, but well, we are here, and we can be good, but obviously we can be not so good as well. so let's see what we can put on a pitch tomorrow.
12:50 am
it's really not easy for them as well. so we will see who deals better with the situation and all these kind of things. rafa nadal has been beaten in straight sets by world number 11 alex de minaur in the second round of the barcelona open. nadal is returning from another long—term injury in what could be his final year before retirement. the 22 time grand slam winner's serve was broken in the first game, and he eventually lost the first set by seven games to 5. the 37—year—old looked increasingly tired during the next set, and that too went to de minaur 6—1 in what was possibly nadal*s last appearance in the barcelona open. i think i was able to show myself most important and the rest of the world, to show myself that when i was really trying at high percentage of intensity. my level was there to compete now, so and i didn't practice a lot.
12:51 am
so that's encouraged me to keep going. third seed casper ruud of norway started his 2024 barcelona open with a straight sets win over world number 110 alexandre muller of france. ruud will face 14th seed jordan thompson of australia of australia in the next round. we're 100 days away from the summer olympics in paris, and the countdown is on to have the city ready in different ways to host the games. all permanent infrastructures are now complete, and the building of temporary sites has started. our sports editor dan roan is in paris for us. well, 100 days to go until paris 202a. and the venues that will host the games themselves are rapidly taking shape. as you can see, we're here in a temporary venue, 13,000 seater arena. it only began work here maybe four weeks ago or so. and it feels like it's almost completed. injune, it will be. this is where the beach volleyball competition will take place.
12:52 am
and as you can see, it's here in the shadow of the most famous parisian landmark, the eiffel tower itself. and, you know, this is really what organisers want these games to be remembered for sustainable venues. 95% of the infrastructure, in fact, for these games will either be using existing buildings and venues or temporary ones like this. the only really new venue that's been built to host sport is the aquatic centre in the area known as saint—denis. that is also where the athletes* village is, and of course the olympic stadium itself. but organisers are saying this they want to be a very green and sustainable games for the good of the olympic movement going forward. and it's venues like this, they say, that are a good example of that. our sports editor dan roan there. lebronjames is going back to the olympics for the first time in 12 years. steph curry is headed to the games for the first time, while kevin durant will go there with his eyes on history. and they're just part of a star—studded roster the americans have assembled for the paris games. usa basketball announced

its men's olympic team for paris on wednesday. the americans have won the last four olympic gold medals and remain ranked no. and remain ranked no one in the world by fiba even after failing to win a medal in the two most recent world cups — finishing seventh at china in 2019 and fourth at manila last summer. the former champion neil robertson has failed to qualify for the world snooker championship, which starts on saturday. the 2010 winner, who has dropped out of the world's top 16, lost 10—9 to wales* jamiejones in sheffield, despite being 8—5 up. it's the first time he won't be at the event in 20 years. meanwhile, he might not be the defending champion this year, but ronnie o'sullivan will start as the one to beat at the crucible. the seven time winner is still resolutely producing his best, with a stellar season almost behind him. what would claiming a record world title number eight mean to him? if i did win it this year, it'd have to be the best
12:54 am
season, you know, masters, uk, shanghai or whatever. i can't remember what the other ones were, but you know, they're key, key events that i've won, you know. listen, it hasn't been i haven't got this master plan where i've kind of plotted it out. i've just pitched up and played and got it right. and whenever i've got it right. so there's no like secret recipe to it. but yeah, it would be i'd have to be my best season, considering i've only played i think 11 events as well. i think my age i need to be like every event i go to with the mindset to win rather than play every event. and, you know, just see how i go sort of thing. and to me, i think i work better when i'm prepared for event or i'm really going in there giving it 100%, which seems to work betterfor me. so ijust keep playing regardless. if i get to eight, great nine, ten, 11, 12, who knows? you know, age isjust a number. i've realised that once around the snooker table
12:55 am
ifeel like a teenager. so that's all it really counts really. and ijust keep putting them in their place. ronnie o'sullivan there, and that is just about it from us. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello. slowly but surely, the weather is going to turn a little bit drier, but not an awful lot warmer as we head towards the end of the week. high pressure is tantalizingly close — sitting to the west of the uk, but still far enough away that weather systems can move in around the top of that area of high pressure — bringing cloud, bringing outbreaks of rain. that's exactly what we're going to see through the day on thursday ahead of that cold, frosty start, but we will see
12:56 am
some spells of sunshine. that will hold on across southern counties of england, but further north, it's a story of increasing clouds, some outbreaks of rain. rain for a good part of the day across scotland, some patchy rain for northern ireland. temperatures just a little bit up on where they have been recently, eight to 15 degrees. now through thursday night, we'll see clouds and increasingly light and patchy rain pushing southwards. behind that, a northerly wind kicks in — a mix of clear spells and showers to take us into the first part of friday. so this weather system easing its way through, clearing southwards with northerly winds behind. you can see quite a few isobars squeezing together on the chart, particularly across the north east of scotland. so here it is going to be windy through the day on friday, particularly around some coasts. it's a day of sunny spells and showers. some of the showers could be on the heavy side, perhaps the showers most frequent across the eastern half of the uk, not as many showers further west. temperatures, six to eight degrees in northern scotland, elsewhere, 11—15 degrees.
12:57 am
now into the weekend, this area of high pressure finally makes its move building across the uk. but brisk winds still affecting eastern coastal counties with potentially quite a lot of cloud, maybe even some showery rain. best chance of any sunshine out towards the west. that's where we'll have the highest of the temperatures, up to around 13, 1a degrees. but it will actually be quite chilly for some eastern parts, particularly for north sea coasts. now, as we get into sunday, again, we'll see clouds, some showery rain perhaps spinning a little bit further west this time. the lowest temperatures always closest to these north sea coast, maybe some places stuck in single digits, 11 for newcastle and for hull. but further west, with some sunshine, northern ireland could see the highest temperatures, 16, maybe 17 degrees. nothing particularly warm in the outlook for next week. often dry, there will be some showers.
