with in edinburgh at ten. keep up with the latest of elements of the bbc website. now it's time to join our colleagues across the nations and regions for the news where you are. goodnight. hello, and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh ferris. the headlines this evening... after a season of points deductions in the premier league, are the financial rules that were used to punish teams about to change? ronnie in a rush... o'sullivan makes the quarter finals of the world snooker championship... sweeping aside ryan day an apology from billy vunipola after being charged in spain after an incident the england international says was a misunderstanding. also coming up on sportsday... and after travis clayton took his next step on the road to the nfl, we speak to his former rugby coach about a player whose new career could make him millions

yes, it's a bit more than three bear and three meals at the end of the game, certainly a and three meals at the end of the game, certainlya big and three meals at the end of the game, certainly a big transition. hello again. even amidst one of the more contested title races in recent years, this has been a season when the premier league's financial rules have provided a telling subplot. everton, nottingham forest, — and even though they weren't in the top flight this time — leicester, have all fallen foul of the regulations. points deductions have been dished out to the first two, but after just one season of sanctions, could the profit and sustainability rules be on the way out? a majority of clubs today voted to pursue a new financial model called *anchoring'. it's more of a spending cap rather than a measure of a club's losses, and, were it to be adopted,
6:32 pm
could come in the season after next. our sports editor dan roan is at old trafford... dan we've onlyjust got used to psr. now we have anchoring... can you explain? yes, so this system would effectively result in a hard salary cap to tie the permitted expenditure by clubs to the television revenue at the bottom placed clubs. if that club earned around £100 million, that's roughly what southampton earned as bottom placed club that season, the top clubs, no other club, in fact, season, the top clubs, no other club, infact, could season, the top clubs, no other club, in fact, could spend any more than half £1 billion if the multiple was five. that is effectively deep principal it may move up or down. it is entering or anchoring and the
6:33 pm
idea is it would perhaps result in more competitive balance in the premier league, more fairness at a time when manchester city, a crosstown, they could wind a fourth title in seven seasons —— a fifth title. if the oil off the threat of arsenal. it looks like liverpool have for than a week of course. there is a fear on the part of some clubs that perhaps simply sending into the sunset, they have too much of a way financial advantage. other clubs, liverpooland of a way financial advantage. other clubs, liverpool and arsenal and spurs, file they have tried to spend responsibly but have rivals who have too many financial resources. on some of this regime, also a squad cost model, the ua five based model, that clubs are also committed to
6:34 pm
bringing this is nastiness, unanimity behind that but on this new anchoring principal it's more contentious and there's more of a split in the camp and to date, the majority of clubs voted today to advance the talks and have further analysis of what it would mean i have a decisive vote i had of the meeting in the summer. we would persevere. — meeting in the summer. we would persevere. we're _ meeting in the summer. we would persevere, we're getting _ meeting in the summer. we would persevere, we're getting some - persevere, we're getting some break—up, you mentioned that you mentioned unanimity, there is a rare thing in the premier league, there was some opposition to the plans, even though they carry today, what is the nature of that opposition? the opposition came from manchester united and manchester city and aston villa, all against this idea and chelsea abstained, in the minority, and their concern is to restrict clubs in this way it would stall their investment, see the best
6:35 pm
players leave the premier league or fitzpatrick them, and had an advantage there european rivals, so advantage there european rivals, so a source of concern on their part, but today's news is that the majority of clubs are in favour in principle at this stage of pursuing the talks as i had of a potential decisive vote this summer. if it is brought in the season after next, a long way to go, the pfa have also expressed their concern, they expressed their against his hard salary cap. there's plenty more to come before this story over, more to come. ~ ., , ., ., ~ come. apologies for the sound wake u . come. apologies for the sound wake u- but i come. apologies for the sound wake up but i hepe _ come. apologies for the sound wake up but i hope what _ come. apologies for the sound wake up but i hope what dan was - come. apologies for the sound wake up but i hope what dan was saying i up but i hope what dan was saying was conveyed to you nonetheless. one of those teams embroiled in the current financial regulations in the premier league will be a top flight club again next season. leicester were promoted from the championship without playing when leeds lost on friday night, and thoughts of facing an independent commission

against bellingham's former side borussia dortmund, thomas tuchel is talking from experience when he said today the england midielder has had an extraordinary development he was fantastic here in the bundesliga, and how he has progressed to show the level of personality, i think it is only buses will with a huge personality. everyone who plays for real madrid, plays with the pressure of the shirt and the pressure to play for this club, with the demands and expectations. he handled it like he has never done anything else before, and he is very dangerous and physical and is game. and he is very dangerous and physicaland is game. he and he is very dangerous and physical and is game. he is the absolute key player in a very offensive position. we are well aware of it, and we try to find solutions tomorrow. the four players involved in the afternoon session at the world snooker championship didn't hang around for long because two of them wrapped up second round wins in very little time.

weather is around the backside of the low—pressure mum but i had drawn a southerly wind which will push the warmth further north on tuesday. more rain from the south england, wales and across northern island equipping west and parts of scotland other easterners of the dry and cloud over more. dirt in one or two light showers come up with that southerly wind it will be warmer than monday was across the midlands into northern england and also in scotland where temperature is reaching 16 or 17 degrees. the cloud coming into the southeast is on that weakening with the front which would push northwards and bring rain on tuesday night. should have moved away by the time we get to wednesday, but some sunshine on wednesday, if you showers left from some old weather fronts but they can and cloud from the continent would bring some rain across the english channel later on in the day. temperature wise, not looking too bad at all, a bit more light this time of year, 17 degrees in glasgow and in birmingham on wednesday

afternoon. an easterly when picking up afternoon. an easterly when picking up will bring their wrist —— risk of some mist and fog around the east coast of scotland and north england, a warmer wind from the cortices, hence the risk of fog, but besides that sunshine in scotland and northern england and northern ireland as well, for the cloud south. a bit cooler on thursday, with an associates of england, cooler along the coast of eastern scotland, but for western scotland, temperatures could reach 20 degrees and highland. he said wind towards the end of the week, nor pressure to the end of the week, nor pressure to the south and we could see some further pulses of rain are showers coming back into england and wales and into northern ireland, looking drier at this stage across much of scotland. again want the easterly breeze so the highest temperatures will be across western scotland, 18 degrees in glasgow, could be higher than that toured the west coast, but cooler where we have the ring

further south. we head into the bank holiday weekend, this is where the forecast typically gets rather more difficult. there's not a great deal of consensus with the computer models. beware the soup —— we may well see on saturday showers and longest was of rain from the south across england and wales, and a bit more cloud this time across western areas of scotland, so temperatures not quite so high on saturday. all were for preferred model is usually this one here, which is going for a witch scenario through the bank holiday weekend, and it may be a bit too extreme, in a bit too focused on the rain, but it is hinting at lower pressure, so showers around probably over the bank holiday weekend. it is beyond that where we may see the weather change and back again, and it may be turning a bit drier as well, just because the low pressures that we see for a while tend to get pushed away and this blocking high—pressure extends down from scandinavia, but lots of uncertainty in the forecast over the bank holiday weekend.
