we're going to get started right now. there is a terrifying ordeal unfolding as we speak. a man disappeared in a sink hole that opened up under his bedroom. the home is unsafe right now. this happened at a house about 15 miles east of tampa. one brother frantically tried to save another. the first responders had to pull him from the edge because the sink hole kept growing. the missing man is 36 years old. the tampa day times says crews are using gear to listen for sound from him. so far, they have not been able to make any kind of contact. we'll have a live report in just a few moments. >> wow. the details on that just opened up? >> really scary. >> crazy. all right. right now wildfire spreading across river side county in california. it forced people to evacuate their homes. you'll understand why when you look at these pictures. 200 firefighters are battling the blaze. authorities also report power lines are down in that area. no injuries have been reported.

the cause of that fire still unknown. >> okay. so let the slashing begin. forced spending cuts, $85 billion worth set to laufrnch b the stroke of midnight tonight. the cuts were designed to be so painful that neither party would dare let them happen. don't hold your breath for an 11th hour deal. most of the elected officials high tailed it out of washington. so once the cuts kick in, it will be a slow bleed. at some point we're likely to see flight delays, limited hours in services at national parks, furloughs which is forced time off without pay for nearly 800,000 civilian pentagon employees. there is a meeting at the white house to discuss this mess but discuss doesn't mean do anything. at this point there doesn't seem to be any way to top the ax from falling. here is brianna keilar. >> reporter: as president obama meets at the white house today with democratic and republican congressional leaders, the capitol will sit empty.

education to food inspection and homeland security. president obama in a written statement accused senate republicans of voting "to let the entire burden of deficit reduction fall squarely on the middle class." brianna keilar, cnn, the white house. in next hour of "early start," we'll talk about the forced spending cuts with republican congressman bill cassidy of louisiana. and we're also following new developments overseas. a japanese court sentencing two u.s. navy sailors to prison terms for raping a woman last year while they were on duty at a u.s. military base in okinawa. 24-year-old christopher browning received a ten-year sentence. 23-year-old sky letter dosier-walker got nine years. the rape case triggered protests in japan when that happened in october. the commander of u.s. forces there put troops on a curfew and apologized to the victims. the white house jumped into the legal fray over proposition 8 in california urging the

about 16 miles southeast of vatican city where the ritual to choose his successor is set to begin. so our senior international kpa correspondent is in rome. they ordered wiretaps on vatican officials as part of the leaks investigation that happened. how do you think this could impact the conclave? >> reporter: well, certainly this whole question of the investigation by the vatican into the scandal where by the butler of the pope leaks to an italian journalist hundreds of highly sensitive documents from his office. since then in september 2012, according to an italian publication that's been following the story within the vatican, they began a series of wiretaps, looking at e-mails. this has been orchestrated according to these reports by a former member of the italian

secret service. so the vatican flatly denied it saying it has no basis in reality. but nonetheless, it certainly would indicate that this question of what is really going on within the vatican is something that will concern the cardinals as they prepare for the conclave. in fact, yesterday i attended a press conference by three american cardinals who said that they will be asking questions about this on going investigation and, of course, an investigation that was conducted by three other cardinals into the whole affair. so very murky indeed. >> certainly an on going concern. the pope resigning was really -- kept very close to the vest. so today, what we want to know is when does this conclave process begin? do we know? >> reporter: certainly the wheels are in motion. apparently last night the

welcome back. rescue crews right now trying to figure out how to get to a man who was swallowed up by a sink hole that opened up right underneath a bedroom. rob munoz of our affiliate is live in brandon, florida. rob, what is the latest? >> reporter: really that is what makes this unique. it is sitting, this entire house sitting on top of a sink hole. we're told when it started it

was about 15 feet deep. i'm going to show you this house here. 15 feet across is when it started. now we're told an engineering firm it is as wide as 100 feet across. maybe about 50 feet deep. again, it's not just putting this entire house at risk, we're told this entire house could go at any moment. but also the neighboring houses as well. they've evacuated the families out of those houses to make sure they are okay. what they're doing right now, again, continuously monitoring this to make sure that nobody is going near this, to make sure that nobody is going, again, anywhere around this house because part of the room has, again, collapsed as far as we know. but we're also told that owners here own this house for a while. they actually had it inspected last year. and there were no signs of cracks or anything. so this really just happened out of nowhere according to the family. they say it sounded like a loud car crash coming through. and, again, just told that there's continuously watching this house.

the engineering firm that was earlier checking this out is going to come back out here at 6:00 this morning to get another estimate to see what is going on. as far as that man, we do not have any confirmation whether or not he is alive or dead. but, again, the results here possibly could be be grim. we haven't heard anything because the equipment they've used have not picked up any sounds from him at all. all they heard is continuously falling sand. this hole, we're told, is continuously falling. so really just kind of watching and waiting to see what happens next here. again, like i said, the home could go at any moment. >> all right. our thanks to you rob munoz in florida right now. again, the story down there, very, very strange and alarming. a 100 foot sink hole opening up under a man's bedroom and that man is now missing. >> as the family stands by and watches this horrific nightmare. thank you very much, john. when jodie arias' murder trial resumes on monday, she'll

be on the witness stand for a 13th day. she is accused of killing her boyfriend travis alexander. he was shot twice, stabbed 27 times, and had his throat slashed. but arias claims it was self-defense. the trial has revealed a lot of sorted x-rated details of their relationship. yesterday arias broke down on the stand. we have details on the dramatic day in court. >> reporter: tears from jodie arias. she broke down on the stand as the first photo of travis alexander's body was displayed in court. it showed him twisted and crumpled on the shower floor. >> were you trying when you were shooting him? >> i don't remember. >> were you crying when you were stabbing him? >> i don't remember. >> how about when you cut his throat? were you crying then? >> i don't know. >> reporter: with her face in her hands, the prosecutor dared

her to look. >> take a look then. you're the one that did this, right? >> yes. >> and you're the same individual that lied about all this, right? >> yes. >> so then take a look at it. >> reporter: from the stand, arias did her best to convince the jury she acted in self-defense. she said alexander attacked her after she dropped his camera. >> he body slammed me. >> he body slammed you down, right? >> yes. >> in a very forceful way. >> where? >> right in the same area, on the tile. >> even if it was self-defense, how did it lead to this? nearly 30 stab wounds, his throat cut and a single gunshot to the head. and prosecutors specifically retraced the steps leading up to that point, starting with the moment she says she shot him.

cuts. >> good morning to both of you. i talked to someone yesterday whose familiar sli already feeling the cuts. a contractor, civilian contractor in san diego for the navy already seeing layoffs there. so you're seeing sort of the ripple effects on the outside. it's not going to be arm getton for the american economy on saturday. it will be weeks if not months assuming that these cuts stay in place before it will trickle down and will be felt more broadly. let's talk about what happens here, what happens now. look, the white house has a detailed cuts for each agency. again, this is assuming there isn't some sort of last-minute deal here. then starting march 1st, you'll start to see the layoff notices for federal workers starting the furlough notices for federal workers. those furloughs, of course, mean you still have a job. you're just not going to be paid for some of your work. in effect, it will be probably one day a week, one day every few weeks. grants, contracts will be curtailed. furloughs won't take place until march 26th and on. the irs will not start any

furloughs until after the tax season. other agencies are already starting to put dates on the calendar starting to talk to unions and talk to workers about when people will be staying home. then you got this other sort of mini cliff deadline, whatever you want to call it, march 27th. funding for the government expires. expect another big fight there about how to keep the government running. then you have budget and debt ceiling negotiations through the summer. so you guys, we are once again at a deadline that is just a deadline before a bunch of other deadlines that will be playing out here. again, all of this is assuming, you know, the cbo says you could lose 750,000 jobs between now and the end of the fiscal year. all of this is assuming that congress doesn't do something to soften this "sequester" to force spending cuts. >> thank you very much. so you read them before, the corporate good-bye e-mail. but wait until you read the one blasted out by a big time ceo. that's coming up. ok what mommy is having. mommy's having a french fry.

with forced spending cuts that will almost definitely take effect by the end of the day, u.s. immigrations and customs enforcement otherwise known as i.c.e., decided to release several immigration detainees as a means of saving money. republicans say this puts the

public at risk. the white house said it had nothing to do with this decision, it was all up to ice and an ice spokeswoman said those would have been release ready noncriminals or low risk offenders. we spoke with one of them. >> reporter: manuel perez was asleep in this east texas immigration detention center last saturday morning when he says guards woke him up at 5:00 a.m. and told him he was being let out. were you surprised they released you? [ speaking spanish ] >> i had no idea what was going on, he says. there were agts otheight other n my cell and i'm the only one they let go. he is one of several hundred undocumented immigrants quietly and unexpectedly released from immigration custody in the last week as looming budget cuts start to affect federal government agencies like immigration and customs enforcement or i.c.e. >> they didn't give you an ankle bracelet? >> he's been told to show up at an immigration court hearing in a few weeks. the illegal immigrants released

from detention facilities like this one in east texas are low risk and i.c.e. officials say it is more cost effective to let them out while they wait for their immigration cases to wind through the court system. perez came to the united states 11 years ago. he was arrested last month on a misdemeanor dwi charge, served the time in a county jail, then he sat in immigration custody for the past month. immigrant advocates like ralph eisenberg say detainees should have never been rounded up because of a minor offense. he says this controversy is casting a light on a broken system. >> they got hundreds of people locked up that aren't supposed to be locked up. and they don't want to get the public scrutiny of it. how do you get rid of them? well, let's let them out and call it a budget crunch. >> reporter: manuel perez came back to his apartment to find all of his belongings were stolen while he was locked up including the tools he needs to work his construction jobs. he'll try to start over while he waits to hear if he'll be

deported. it is 43 minutes after the hour now. police in florida are on the hunt for a puppy snatcher this morning. watch closely. surveillance video from this orlando pet shop shows a woman walking in with a young boy when she makes a beeline for the bicron frise bin and drops the pricey pooch into her purse and then takes off. we caught this dog and the dog is worth close to $900 and she will face grand theft chargers. andrew mason is out of a jop. the 32-year-old seems to be taking it in stride. in a letter to the company's staff, mason wrote, "after four and a half intense and wonderful years as ceo of groupon, i've decided i'd like to spend more time with my family. just kidding. i was fired today." the company has been poorly performing since going public last year. >> he's known for his sense of humor. that was funny. 44 minutes after the hour

crews had to use snow plows to clean up that mess. nevada highway patrol said no one was hurt. thankfully. so you have seen the commercials at 3:00 a.m. i haven't seen them. but now girls gone wild has filed for bankruptcy. they filed for chapter 11 yesterday claiming a little over $16 million in debts. it is seen as a mover by the founder to protect him sfrefl a multimillion dollar debt owed to casino mogul steve wynne. it won't affect businesses comparing itself to other titans of american business like general motors. amazing video here. canadian officials had a unique situation when a doe and her fawn got stuck on the ice. this was last month in nova scot scotia. the ice was too thin for the rescuers to walk on so they brought a helicopter. the fawn ran to shore when the helicopter got close and the doe ended up sliding to safety,

welcome back to "early start," everyone. the sensational murder trial of jodi arias will be back in session on monday, her 13th day testifying. arias is facing a possible death sentence for the cold-blooded killing of her lover, travis alexander, back in 2008.

shot twice, stabbed 27 times and had his throat cut. arias says it was self-defense. more from cnn's randi kaye. >> reporter: tears from jodi arias. broke down on the stand as the first photo of travis alexander's body was displayed in court, showing him twisted and crumpled on the shower floor. >> ma'am, were you crying when you were shooting him? >> i don't remember him. >> were you crying when you were stabbing him? >> i don't remember. >> where you crying when you were slitting his throat. >> i don't remember. >> take a look many y. you were the one that did this? >> yes. >> and you lied about all of this, right? >> yes. >> take a look at it.

>> reporter: from the stand, arias did her best to convince the jury she acted in self-defense. she says alexander attacked her after he dropped her camera. >> he body slammed me. >> body slammed you down? >> yes. >> in a forceful way. where did he body slam you down, ma'am. >> right in the same area, on the tile. >> reporter: even if it was self-defense, how did it lead to this? nearly 30 stab wounds, his throat cut and a single gunshot to the head. and prosecutors specifically retraced the steps leading up to that point, starting with the moment she said she shot him. >> he was running at me. >> reporter: she alleges that he came at her like a linebacker. >> he went like that and turned his head. >> reporter: that's when she

says the gun went off. >> i yelling stop when the gun went off. >> then what do you do? >> i don't remember. i just remember -- i don't remember what i did at that point. >> reporter: later, the prosecutor showed several fwrusome photos from the crime scene. >> you would acknowledge the stabbing was after the shooting according to you, right? >> yes. i don't remember. >> i'm not asking you if you remember, ma'am. i'm asking if you acknowledge it would be you that did it, correct? >> yes. >> reporter: no matter what she says on the stand, the state isn't buying her whoever. they believe alexander was killed in the shower. they showed a clip of her interview with a detective.

there is an allegation she lured him to the shower, just hours after they had sex. >> i was like i just have an idea, a couple of ideas. i saw this thing in a calvin klein ad that looked really good. you're right. he wasn't comfortable at first. he is standing there and he says i feel gay. >> reporter: arias snapped naked photos of alexander, including this one shown in court. it's time stamped 5:30 p.m. just two minutes before arias stabbed him in the heart. >> you were the person that was directing him on where to be and how to sit, right? >> yes. >> reporter: directing him perhaps to his own death. >> do you remember we're talking about travis alexander, let's start with that. >> yes, i remember that. >> we are here because you killed him, right? >> yes. >> reporter: randi kaye, cnn, phoenix, arizona. >> got to say, riveting case.

bosses are doing to keep their workers from leaving the office. welcome back to "early start." i'm zoraida sambolin. >> and i'm john berman. >> it's friday. finally fry, 31 minutes past the hour. and a man disappears into a sinkhole that opened up right under his bedroom. fire officials tell us he is presumed dead. this happened 50 miles east of tampa. one brother frantically tried to save another. but the first responders could only pull one of them out because the sinkhole kept growing. >> mattress, bed, everything going down in the hole where the first person had gone, and now the second person is in the hole trying to saift first and not being successful. he basically just reacted and did what he had to do to get that person out. >> how deep did he say the hole was? >> deep enough that the person he pulled out to safety was not able to fully extend their arms and able to reach the top.

>> the hole estimated to be 100 feet wide, 50 feet deep. the missing man, 36 years old. the home could come down completely at any moment. we'll update you on the developing story as we get details. a wildfire burning out of control in los angeles. the fire has scorched 150 acres and forced evacuations in riverside county, california. authorities also say at least one structure has been damaged. that fire is 20% contained. cause is under investigation. we are hours away from a high-profile meeting at the white house. it will take place this morning, the president will meet with top congressional leaders at 10:00 a.m. eastern to discuss the forced spending cuts that go into effect by the end of the day if no deal is reached. we do not expect one. this is the first time they are meeting face to face this year to address the latest financial crisis. these cuts designed to be so painful that neither party would dare let them happen, but they have dared let them happen.

did, all it did was move defense spending into nondefense congressional spending. that aside, you were in baton rouge today. why? why are you not in washington? why are members in congress not in washington trying to come up with a solution? >> for months, we've actually had bills out there that we can look out there and see where we are. i was there until late last night. the president is coming to the table. i could cool my heels in washington or come home and talk to people and learn my constituent's opinions about this. if the president wanted to have a meeting a month ago, we could have been considering it for a month, but for me to sit in an apartment in washington while the president comes to the table doesn't seem productive? >> fair point. whose fault is all of this. if you are a voter out there, voters are looking at this, going how could this possibly have happened? who can we blame here? >> the president proposed the sequester way back when. that's been well documented, jay carney has agreed to that, and frankly during the campaign,

during the presidential campaign, insisted that cuts wouldn't go into place in retrospect it looks like a political sort of move and now he's not invited leaders to come meet with him until today. that said, congressional members are ready to come meet at any time. frankly, i would like to see leadership from the president. >> the president proposed it, bob woodward has reported that to be the case. but you voted it, as did a number of republicans. head start, cut for 1,400 kids. 1, 1,700 kids will receive vaccines, 120 special ed teachers aides could be cut. those are serious cuts. >> two things, john. one, they are all terrible cuts. not sure they are all true. why would a state-funded

vaccination program would be cut. but they will make the american people feel the pain it won't be the person with the corner office earning six figures laid off it will be the person on the front line. at some point the american people have learned to do more with less, in government it seems like government needs does less with more, so these cuts are terrible. i wish we could have surly addressed this, but we've got a spending problem, we've got to address it, so if this is what it takes to focus the president's attention, that's not all bad. >> that may be the bad news, worse news, another deadline ahead 3 1/2 weeks away with the need to pass the budget. we wish you luck. congressman bill cassidy, thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> big question. when will we feel the cuts?
