preferred better science, better results secretary of state antony blinken headed to the middle east because everybody is interested in the region that we find a pathway to resolve this issue once and for all 2015, a year long campaign made columbia university the first to divest from private prison you just can't believe the destruction like it seems like every business downtown has been destroyed now, it was like a freight train to the noise was so loud live from london this is cnn newsroom with max foster hello, a warm welcome to our viewers joining us from around
1:02 am
the world. i, max foster is monday, april 29th, 9:00 a.m. here in london, 11:00 a.m. in riyadh saudi arabia. and that's where us secretary of state antony blinken is right now hoping to jumpstart hostage release and ceasefire talks involving israel and hamas, you met just a few minutes ago with saudi arabia's foreign minister. also meet with other arab officials later today. they're expected to discuss aid to gaza, how to achieve it and the quote, a lasting peace and potential pathway to a palace syrian state as well. this comes after us president joe biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke by phone on sunday, a source described that call has constructive and said they addressed a number of issues regarding the war soon as priscilla alvarez has more now on the discussion between the two leaders and other us diplomatic efforts in the middle east president biden on sunday spoke with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu in a call that was primarily
1:03 am
focused on a hostage deal that according to a source familiar. >> now, this call lasted just under an hour and was described by the source as constructive. of course, us officials i've been working around the clock to try to reach an agreement that would allow for a temporary ceasefire about six weeks. and also the release of hostages held by hamas and for more humanitarian aid to get searched into gaza. senior us officials have been traveling to the region over the last several months to try to advance these talks and secretary of state antony blinken headed to the middle east on sunday, where he too will be involved in these conversations. as well as conversations about getting more aid into gaza. now the president and israeli prime minister are also touched on other issues, including, for example, around the airstrikes against israel and israel's airstrikes against iran the first time they've discussed that since that occurred earlier this month, and about rafah. that's an area where israel has said that they would patel actually launch an operation. it's also were there are over 1 million palestinians displaced according to a white
1:04 am
house readout said, quote, the leaders discussed rafah and the president reiterated his clear position, that position from the us being that an operation at this point would be untenable. of course, those conversations are ongoing now, what happens after this call and the results of it are still unclear, but what we will be monitoring in the weeks to come are still alvarez, cnn, the white house scott mclean is life versus in assemble with more on this week, getting a sense of blinken strategy. scott i think the priorities here are pretty clear, max, obviously he wants to go and try to create the conditions to drum up support for a ceasefire here and a return of the hostages. >> and obviously there's many countries in the room that he'll be meeting with who could potentially play a useful role in doing that. he is also meeting with the handful of arab countries phrase on a plan for the day after this war actually ends. and a pathway to
1:05 am
a two-state solution. and that's where the saudis come in. of course, the us has for some time been trying to expand on this landmark agreement that was signed under president trump called the abraham accords which normalized relations between israel and a handful of arab countries. and they would like those agreements to also include the saudis. but the saudis have made abundantly clear that they're not going to be signing anything like there's any kind of normalization with israel until the war in gaza is over and until there is a, an irreversible pathway toward a two-state solution and a palestinian state. here's the saudi foreign minister yesterday does everybody is interested in the region our interest, the interest of the palestinians, the interests of israelis, the interest the global community of nations that we find a pathway to resolve this issue once and for all he also went on to say that
1:06 am
finding a solution gets two-state solution would also avoid history repeating itself and also ensure that the suffering that we have seen on all sides of this conflict would not be in vain. on friday, antony blinken said that it was possible in his mind to get normalization deal without a ceasefire being agreed to in gaza, this would be a departure from what us officials have been saying for some time. but either way, he certainly has his work cut out for him. you mentioned those new pictures that we saw him meeting with the saudi foreign minister. he's also going to be meeting directly with the saudi crown prince mohamed bin salman, and he will take all of this information that he's gleaned from these arab leaders and take it to israel where he will present it to them and surely a lot of what he's going to be telling the israelis is the need to not go into rafah and to dramatically increase the amount of aid going in their max now i'm wondering if the israelis can reassure him at least that civilians will be protected if they go into rapper i mean, it's worth
1:07 am
pointing out that there are ongoing airstrikes happening in rafah this place where you have well over 1 million, perhaps 1.5 million civilians who are continuing to take shelter according to a hospital in rafah, 20 people were killed in airstrikes, just overnight president biden, you heard perez priscilla alvarez talking about the called biden and netanyahu, where the us has made clear its position that there should be a clear, credible plan to get civilians out of the way. >> and there's been plenty of doubts cast by us officials as to whether that's even true at all. and of course, the us has been hammering on aid as well weeks ago, you'll remember that president biden tourists conversation with prime minister netanyahu and the wake of the killing of the world central kitchen staff in gaza and there was a time where israel really came out and made clear that it was going to ramp up aid into gaza, and it did. but now if you ask the un,
1:08 am
those numbers have dropped well below so the target of 500 trucks per day it perhaps then it's not a coincidence that given these calls happening, given secretary blinken's trip, given the fact that we know that he's going to be checking in with the israelis on how things are going the israelis have again announced new efforts to further step up aid, gluten, getting more through a crossing into northern gaza, more bye, bye. see in that floating pier that it's helping the us to build and also more coming in through jordan and through israel on route to gaza as well. max scott assemble. thank you doesn't have students and children in gaza are thanking the pro-palestinian protests to us colleges nationwide for their support. they spray-painted messages of gratitude on makeshift tents, which now serve as a shelter for displaced palestinians in raffa. one message reads thank you students in solidarity with gaza, your message has reached
1:09 am
us and the demonstrations continue to grip major universities across the us. as some of those college campuses are being shaken by unrest, like at the university of california, los angeles, where physical altercations broke out between protest groups after security barrier was breached ucla official said the school condemned the violence and on-site security measures have been increased. some ucla protesters are speaking out we've seen historically that when the students decide to unite, that the people, will rally behind them. >> so this is no surprise to me. i know that the american public is not okay with their own facts paying dollars going to fund israel, and they're also not okay with students paying tuition and their money going to fund israel, funding their investments here as students, we were pepper sprayed, we were pepper sprayed and they also, through stink
1:10 am
bombs at us it was disgusting. somebody stole my sin they really, really believe in intimidating. there were trying to say cussing at us. saying terrible things i believe in protest. >> i do but but not like this. not like this may well, this deadlock, at new york's columbia university, the epicenter of those demonstrations with student protesters say in talks with the administration, has slowed. >> cnn's polo sandoval has more if you speak to the columbia students who are actively engaged in negotiations with columbia university, they will tell you that those talks are at an impasse. >> now they have seen some progress when it comes to some of their demands, including for complete transparency. >> it's number one that is a really big sticking point here. divestment, which is they are asking for all financial ties between the university and tech or weapons companies with israeli ties be completely cut. if you look back through history, you will find that
1:11 am
there have been many other calls for divestment. some have actually been successful toal, including in 1968. that's when columbia students occupied several buildings, including hamilton hall that you see off in the distance by doing so, raising awareness of the vietnam war in 2015, a year-long campaign made columbia university the first to divest from private prisons. >> and then a few years later on those very steps that you see off in the distance in front of the library. >> that's where a group of climate activists, students states a hunger strike to divest from coal and fossil fuels. but perhaps were the most successful calls for divestment came in the 80s when students called for the cutting off of financial ties between the university and south african companies during the apartheid all right, and that is when once again, hamilton hall, we saw this occupation of students that eventually lead to a trustee vote that would make columbia university firstly, the first ivy league to cut said ties. and that is
1:12 am
the kind of legacy that is certainly not lost on all of the young people that we have seen in the scene. you can't min and is really why the reason why they are reluctant to pack up and leave. >> now in terms of columbia university, they are certainly still under pressure. >> what will the administration do? will they? once again turned to the nypd for assistance and clearing out this encampment, which previously made them the subject of an investigation from the columbia university senate, or do they allow them to remain as the big graduation commencement ceremony? meir's in this very spot in a matter of weeks. polo sandoval, cnn new york us senator bernie sanders is expressing his support for the ongoing pro-palestinian protests on us college campuses. but he stressed the need to condemn anti-semitism and other forms of bigotry right now, what it was right extremist and racist government is doing is unprecedented in the modern history of warfare they have
1:13 am
killed in the last 6.5 months, 33,000 palestinians wounded 77,000 thirds of whom are women and children they have destroyed over 60% of the housing. >> they have destroyed that health care system they have destroyed the infrastructure no elect, the city. very little water. and right now we are looking at the possibility of mass starvation and famine in gaza when you make those charges, that is not anti symmetric, that is a reality so our job is to condemn hamas, a terrorist organization that started this war condemn in every form, antisemitism, islamophobia, and other forms of bigotry. but we do have to pay attention to the disastrous and unprecedented humanitarian disaster taking place in gaza right now we won't take you now though to saudi arabia's
1:14 am
capital, riyadh. >> you can see us secretary of state antony blinken there for talks for foreign ministers of the gulf cooperation council member states. it is his latest trip to the region following the october 7 attacks by hamas on israel. it comes as the white house is urgently trying to broker a ceasefire and hostage release deal. it also wants to hammer out details for an eventual two-state solution between israelis and palestinians, as well as get efforts at saudi israel normalization back on track to stay with us for details on how those talks go now, a cnn poll, a new one finds high levels of disapproval for us president joe biden's handling of the conflict in gaza 71% of respondents say they don't like the way he has handled the war between israel and hamas that number is 81% amongst those aged 18 to 34 apolitical amis has the advice that he season this for mr. biden
1:15 am
there's a limit to what president biden can do. but what he can do is make clear and do it much more publicly than he has been his opposition to some of the policies of the israeli government, certainly in gaza and what he's doing on the humanitarian brand side to increase the relief that's going to those in gaza who don't have enough to eat, that would help it's not nearly enough and people always expect too much of a president. they do not have magic wands. they can't end wars overnight. they can't tame inflation overnight. but that goes well, the territory we expect them to do much more than they can sit in poll also registered voters for their preferences in a head-to-head match between mr. biden and republican presidential candidate donald trump and found trump leading by a margin of 6%. >> larry. >> sabato says he expects that to change before the election
1:16 am
it is surprising certainly the democrats and i think certainly to the biden white house, that it would be tied given the fact that one of the candidates is in a court room day after day, and that he's facing a total of 88 felonies and four separate jurisdictions. >> that's unusual. it's totally unprecedented in american history. and for that reason, and not just that reason, i expect things to change maybe several times between now and the actual fall voting in october, november now coming up a donbass, adding to the misery in kenya, which is already reeling from weeks of devastating rain and deadly flash flooding. >> plus that dozens of isn't the former soviet republic of georgia demonstrate against the bill that's making its way through parliament that they say it brings them to close to musk go for their comfort and later, only two teams remain in

about sinner, use my max foster, some of our top stories today. >> your secretary of state antony blinken now in riyadh, saudi arabia maybe a he is that she discussed the potential ceasefire and hostage release deal between the israeli government and hamas six. so blinken will head to israel and jordan later this week. in the coming hours, spain's prime minister pedro sanchez will announce whether he will step down from office he said last week he might resign after a spanish court began a business corruption investigation into his wife's private dealings. he denies the allegations against his wife, saying as part of a campaign against him by political opponents praetorian wife meghan, will travel to nigeria next month that you can duchess of sussex will be meeting with service members during their stay and we'll discuss possibly bringing the invictus games to nigeria elon musk went to time courting officials and other influential figures in the highly competitive electric vehicle market in china over the weekend, musk shared online
1:31 am
that he met with premier lead can on sunday. tesla has been losing ground to china due to innovative local options. soon as marc stewart is at the beijing auto show in front of one of those options, mark max, this is a very competitive market here in china. this is astounding. there are more than 200 ed beggars chances are not all of them are going to survive. and end-use also have eli, nice get to the next. >> we are at the exhibition space for shell me tech company here in china. >> this is really one of the hotspots. the company known for cell phones and for household appliances. but now it's made a car. this is, its entry the suu seven. yes, it is fast. it is aerodynamic, is battery has a very long life, but what really makes this car unique is the electronic inside you really can coordinate your entire lifestyle through that includes
1:32 am
turning the lights in it off in your home. even the coffee maker. >> so this is a very competitive time for car makers like show me they need to stand out and for good reason because right now if we look at the shiny is ev market, there is an oversupply of chinese economy is very uncertain not to mention in some parts of the world or just a lack of interest in evs of over there is the ford exhibit. >> there's a very sleek four bronco, but it's not getting nearly as much attention as the chinese brands. and now we have elon musk in this mix. as you mentioned he met with the chinese premier. he has a very successful factory in shanghai and would like four things to continue. but there have been some security this is a familiar theme we hear between the us and china. he sat down with the premier to try to make a more agreeable business environment. and it seems like
1:33 am
that has occurred and to be honest with you, china really does need players like tesla. it needs more foreign dollars. so here's that some kind of agreement hi has been raised, is not a big surprise. but for these chinese carmakers that are here at the show, entering the us market is probably going to be a lot more difficult there are concerns from us officials that some of these vehicles could potentially gather information and send it back to beijing. china so for now is the world's largest auto export but without the us market that's going to be a real tough sell. by the way, max, if we look at all of these cars here, certainly some very right and unique colors, also many price points. these vehicles where i am right now. so anywhere from 30,000, $40,000 amazing, mom. >> thank you so much. russia's defense ministry says it's making gains in eastern ukraine, taking over a village
1:34 am
in the donetsk region. a ukrainian troops are facing the fiercest battles currently, according to the country's army chief he says the situation on the front line has escalated. but pointed out that it's changing every day. ukraine's army chief also described the situation in the south as tense ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy hopes incoming foreign aid will turn things around on the battlefield when i she could eat, we are cooperating with our partners at all levels to achieve a level of efficiency and assistance that is needed not only to maintain our positions, but also to disrupt russia's war point. >> i she pull you're still waiting for the supplies that have been promised to ukraine blind, we expect the exact volume and scope and supplies that could change the situation on the battlefield in ukraine's interests slutsky went on to say his country is working with the us to firm up support for the next ten years. >> now, protesters in georgia were denouncing the government's efforts to force through a controversial russia style of foreign agents law thousands of people marched
1:35 am
against the bill on sunday. they say, it'll be used to crushed descent and civil society if it passes, organizations that receive more than 20% of funding from abroad, we required to register as foreign agents. clare sebastian joins us now, obviously a fierce reaction from the eu. but how close are we to this bill being passed? >> so the second reading is set for tuesday. this is why we see these protests stepping up over the weekend. it needs to go through three readings to pass through parliament and then it will likely have to overcome a presidential veto that dogen president has said that she will almost certainly veto this. the ruling party can then override that, but that will add a small delay. but it does seem that the government is determined to do this and the protesters are determined to come out in force. very large-scale protest again, over the weekend to express their opposition. the background of course, is that this is a law that the georgia and ruling party, the georgian dream party, tried to force through a year ago, but then back down because of these protests there's a lot more at stake now, of course, because georgia
1:36 am
has eu candidate status and reforms that it's been specifically asked to do. an act as a result of that include guaranteeing that civil society is able to operate freely. obviously, this foreign agents law, which would impose restrictions on anyone meeting that designation runs counter to that. amnesty has called it incompatible with international human rights law. and the president has said that she's very worried that this is a sign of russia exerting its soft power in the country through propaganda through which he called uncontrolled russian migrants there and trying to force them away from the european union. so it's definitely the building and you can see the divisions over this very clearly absolutely. and just going back to this usaa, going to ukraine's want to play you one us senator said about that america is stretched too thin. we do not have the industrial capacity to support a war in ukraine, a war and israel potentially a war, in
1:37 am
east asia, if the chinese invade taiwan. america has to pick and choose. if we focus on a stage if we focus on containing the chinese, the europeans can step up in europe easier said than done, presumably, well, i think the click counter argument to this is that you cannot disconnect those things. >> this is what the cia director bill burns said back in march. china is watching. china is looking to see how much us leadership is exerted in the war in ukraine. and then using that to sort of calculate its next move. so if the us pulls out of ukraine, that could embolden china, that is an argument that many in favor of the us staying in support of ukraine have put forward the other one in terms of whether the europeans can step up and handle this alone. he says that balance says that putin is a lot weaker than many had feared. russia is also a moving target. russia has evolved dramatically from the army that had to withdraw very quickly from the kyiv region two years ago is not alone in the world. it's getting support from china in the form of sort of dual use technology chips,
1:38 am
things like that. antony blinken, the us sector of warning, china about this in the last few days, it's fired apparently according to a un panel and north korea missile at the kharkiv region back in january is getting support from iran. it's actually building iranian designed drones inside russia. so this is very much a moving target and evolving military force. and i think that isn't me to consider when when looking at the argument as to whether the us can ford to pull out and just concentrate on china. >> clare. thank you another journalist has been arrested in russia on charges of extremism. surrogate currently is accused of making videos for the late alexey navalny's youtube channel, which investigates corruption in the kremlin. he's worked for several news outlets, including these associated press konstantin gabov was also arrested over the weekend on the same charges. the court said he's a producer for reuters news agency, and we'll be detained for at least two months. australians demanding an end to
