>> good afternoon everyone. my name is suzanne clark i have the privilege of serving the present ceo at the u.s. chamber of commerce. on behalf of the american business community it is my honor to welcome prime minister kishida and his esteemed delegation to washington. i also want to welcome ambassador shigeo yamada and ambassador immanuel. let me recognize quickly a few other champions in the room for a vibrant business climate in a very strong bilateral partnership between our two countries. one is it doug peterson who serves as a chair of the u.s./japan business council president and ceo of s to be global. david is the vice chair of the business council and ceo of western digital. i must also recognize our own

who has done so much work for this council and for today's event. thank you. thanks to all of you for joining us here today. i know you are here because each of us is committed to forging the most dynamic and resilient economic partnership possible between the united states and japan. we note critical and emerging technology is a key part of that. last of all a group of us from the u.s. chamber traveled to tokyo where we were very warmly received for the 60th anniversary -- check the 60th annual u.s./japan business conference. wait a full slate of engagements with government officials, business leaders and dignitaries. in his remarks at the start of that conference prime minister kishida make clear maintaining and strengthening the alliance is a top priority. it's the one that u.s. chamber is proud to share. it is a priority because it ties

between the united states and japan are based on shared values. freedom and democracy. free enterprise and open markets. and the rule of law. it is a priority because our nations have spent decades building at economic relationship that serves as the cornerstone of peace, stability and prosperity in the end of pacific. as everyone in this room knows bilateral trade totals more than $280 billion in supports and millions of jobs in those countries. it is a priority this is a complex moment. and with so much of geopolitical uncertainty u.s. and japan leadership on the world stage is needed more than ever. this building, this rumor about 112 years ago for this express purpose. the idea business leaders and government leaders would connect at scale in order to be a force for good in the world.

he's prime minister and sartre october 2021 but his service to japan extends far beyond that. he started his career as a secretary in the house of representatives and rose to elected office representing hometown here hiroshima and 1993. he was appointed minister of foreign affairs in 2012 went on to become the longest-serving foreign minister and japan's history. his firsthand experts of the private sector not just the private sector in his time working an investment firm in tokyo was public/private partnership i want to personally thank him for the great work he has done for the asset management sector and finding new ways for people to save and japan. also to make japan and tokyo hub for financial services in asia. i like to thank the prime minister for strong support of the 60th anniversary last year in tokyo. you brought active engagement for cabinet and personally involved with us the thank you very much for that.

as all of you know the council's omission strengthen the economic partnership. it is a partnership that is a cornerstone of stability, security and not prosperity. not just in the end of pacific region but globally. our relationship is more important than ever. we look forward to working together the government of japan and advance our shared goals and we really appreciate you are making very first meeting on this trip with the private sector who represent the most important companies in this country and those that have the highest interest and japan. so thank you for joining us but let me have the floor over to you mr. prime minister thank you very much for joining us. >> a dear business leaders from around the nation representing the economy. thank you so much for gathering

achieved in the economy the bank of japan has negative interest rates decided for the first time in 17 years on a rate hike outperforming inflation. aggressive capitol expenditures. mobility transcending organizational borders reshuffling of corporate portfolio and corporate governance reform will all be facilitated to promote the flow of the people, goods and medic during our policy to take the economy to a new phase. turning our focus to the

economic relationship between our two countries last year's to the united states surpassed seven hundred $50 billion making japan the largest investor to the united states for four consecutive years since 2019. japanese businesses operate in more than 8500 locations around the united states creating close to 1 million jobs. the theme for today's roundtable is cooperation critical technology. in such areas of innovation, clean energy economy and supply chain and on such technology as semiconductors, ai, quantum computing it is increasingly important for our two countries to build resilience and our

economies and together drive growth for the global economy. in the semiconductor field it's partnering with a u.s. company in research and development of next generation chips there will surely be more such opportunities between japan and the united states. on generative ai we are most appreciative to the u.s. companies that have generously to ai development initiatives supported by the government of japan. further, under the hiroshima ai process japan and the u.s. are cooperating in international rules making and in attracting support for more countries and

businesses. and energy and gx, the synergy between the promotion strategy and the inflation reduction act of the united states we shall seek to accelerate green transformation and diverse pathways responding to specific situations in each country. and together contribute global decarbonization. in addition to collaboration between businesses and research institutes of our two countries diverse advanced technologies i am hopeful we can lead the world towards green transformation. at the same time japan welcomes investments from the united states that push forward such cooperation critical and emerging technology.
