[inaud conversations] >> well, we want to thank you all for being here ons a somber evening. there's a biblical admonition that we are to give honor where honor is and we take that very seriously. and during national police w and head of peace officers memorial day, we give much lawrved recognition to our enforcement officers and in particular of courseallen in th. the men and women all of o enforcement are l the minimum ad to who pursue justice, maintain nd guard the safety of our communities from crime and chaos. and tho gen their lives for this noble and necessary cause are buried with honor and, of course, with

heartache. we mourn because they were taken too soon, but in supreme sacrifice, these officers have shown the greatest form of love, the act of laying down one's life for others. 26,000 officers have died in the line of duty in the u.s., 56er just this past you alone. dangerous vocation but it is more than a vocation. it is a calling. and weon who step up to that these officers exampled by the american spirit. they have pledged their lives and sacred hor we may all live in peace here and today we to pay tribute to those who clothes themselves in uniforms of dignity decency, those who stand on the line of justice and keep us all we also say thank you to the families who have lost t loved ones because of their commit t communities safe. i want to introduce to someone special, jennifer mcmeekin.

in 2005 jenna firstusband patrolman thomas mcmeekin lost -- jennifer comeine of duty. toou and many families who share your experience we offer ever indebted and we would invi to h share a few thoughts on this evening. instep out. >> thank you, speaker. h a third-generation cit police officer picks since 1947 when his grandfather first retired there've many family members to the state that are still on the department. two of his articles a retired chief of police from atlantic city and his aunt was the first theme of captain of all of atlantic avenue respect his father with an hellenic city fireman. his tour ended in 1996 when he was paralyzed in aarccidt. .. and only sibling is

a fireman today still in t city. from a very young age my husband need to follow in his family's foepnths graduated from rutgers university, 5 years later on march 4, 2005, and never had to knock on the door. he fought for his life are 8 hours that night. promised i would never forget him. and our daughter fuels his presence daily. thomas, when he was killed, i became a widow at 23 years old.

i was proud when he became a father. and the father she wishes she had. i can't give her that but his life.to share or she graduatefrom high school, and she will graduate from rutgers university, the vice president of programming fhe and i was afraid of have to l. navigate this new life alone but i was never alone. others in law enforcement where they're preparing for the funeral is what was to come. i had support of the local numbers that are here with me tonight.

the world of law enforcement, priest's widow and a priest's wife. the department of pennsylvania. and thomas is 13. on my laced husband's birthday. i try not to worry every but the fear still creeps in and always will. i am so proud of him for what and go to the national memorial, and surrounded by thousands of others officers. this year, 282 fatrs, sons,

tommy? >> mr. spea members of congress and guests, i am here in tribute to my late wife, lieutenant donohue who died of ths al i have been to that her name has been added to. it doesn't get easier. although it doesn't geer events like these are impta it is crucial to never forget the officers who sacrificed their lives, and courage, bravery and safety they stood for.

ot oy honor their memory but also remind us of the debt of gratitude we owe those who still wear the uniform. these officers demonstrate the human side of law enforcement, some come from a law enforcemenmi marine's grandfather in ireland, they ar cuts. as we continue to honor, as we continue to honor these offices let us remember they have fears and dreams like everyone else yet they chose put themselves at risk in better placesthei sacrifice and dedication are necessary for safe communities.
