on capitol hill, tweeting out earlier around 5:00 today after he caught up with jim jordan, a question to him. how many ballots are you willing to go through? jordan responding to the reporter, until we get a speaker. we've got to have a speakernd it can't be some deal with the democrat he says. the american people don't want that. they elected republicans in the majority. small majority, he says. i get that. we're getting your reaction he on c-span. to the speaker eleiotoday. republicans, 202-748-8921. democrats, 202-748-8920. all others you can calls at 202-748-8922. send us a text, include your first name, city and state, 2-8-8903, or post on x your mments, include the handle@cspan. of on facebook.com/cspan.
6:23 pm
earlier today, 200 republicans voted for jim jordan to b their speaker. he needed 217. all democrat, 212, voting for hakeem jeffries. 20 rcansoting for someone otan jim jordan. seven voting for steve scalise o was the nominee last week after which he withdrew his name from consideration. others voting for mike garcia and lee zeldin. those are the names of those on the screen who were no votes. jim jordan has been working mind the scenes asking exr help from folks like steve scalise and others to help him get to that number we needs to get to. he noted for reporters that guy bilirakis, a republican from
6:24 pm
florida, who was out this afternoon, will be back tomorrow when they vote. that's 201 in jordan's favor. you also had doug lamalfa, a congressman from california, putting out a statement that after the first round of voting, he talked to jim jordan on the phone and he is now decided to vote for jim jordan when this comes to a second vote. there are others, though, like congressman gimenez who also tweeted out to say, i'm going to continue to vote for kevin mccarthy because he doesn't like what happened to kevin mccarthy two weeks ago. in the meantime, he says, let's give speaker pro tem patrick mchenry, the powers to deal with legislation that needs to come to the floor. let's get to your calls and reactions to this speaker race today and how it unfolded here on c-span. our live coverage throughout the afternoon. orville in michigan, a republican.
6:25 pm
we'll go to you first. hi, orville, you're up. caller: hello. host: hello, we're listening to you. what did you think of that first round of voting today? caller: not too good should be a republican not a democrat in there. democrats got out, republicans got on, republicans should be back in there. host: kayla, a democrat caller. caller: how are you? host: i'm well. caller: i was calling to say is it shouldn't matter if you're a republican or democrat. if the person is a republican and you're not for the people then you shouldn't be in there. it's all about the people, not your personal interests or whatever you got going on. that's my view.
6:26 pm
host: all right. delores, a republican. who do you want to be speaker for the republican party? caller: i think they should quit fighting aamong each other and vote for jim jordan. give him a chance. they gave everybody else a chance. give him a chance. host: why jim jordan? caller: because he knows what to do. host: what gives you that confidence that he knows what to do? caller: he's been there long enough. he's the people's choice. people like him. host: how do you know he's the people's choice? caller: he's my choice and that's all that matters to me. host: ok. all right, do lohrs re. dan in -- jan in philadelphia. clip hello. i want to call in quickly to say that it is my prayers that someone else will be the nominated for the republicans to
6:27 pm
get the -- another speaker because jim jordan has been there a long time. he hasn't voted for anything that has been positive to move this country forward. he is incapable to be -- he's not qualified to be speak over the house. and he's not for the people of these united states. he is for trump and his gang. and he is not united with the republicans. not republicans that i've ever known in my lifetime. host: all right, jan. "usa today" did a profile piece on jim jordan in the paper today. who is jim jordan? he entered the house in 2007 as a conservative bomb thrower who was a thorn in the sides of g.o.p. leadership. he's a founding member of the ultra conservative freedom caucus, a key faction of house republicans that haunted mccarthy and forced him to
6:28 pm
placate to the right flank of his conference throughout his speakership. jordan served as freedom caucus' first chair and remains a member of that group as well. little bit about him in today's "usa today." after the first round of voting concluded, members left the house floor and many of them talked to reporters outside of the capitol steps. republicans, democrats, including the democratic leader, hakeem jeffries. here's what he had to tell reporters. mr. jeffries: the situation in the house of representatives right now is unreal. unbelievable. and unacceptable. the american people need the house of representatives reopened. so we can go about getting things done for everyday americans and solving problems for hardworking american taxpayers.
6:29 pm
from the very beginning of this congress, house democrats have made clear that we are ready, willing and able to find bipartisan common ground on any issue. in order to make a difference in the lives of everyday americans. and we have proven our willingness to do that throughout this entire congress. in terms of avoiding a catastrophic default on our debt, house democrats were there. in terms of preventing a reckless government shutdown, house democrats were there. in terms of providing $16 billion in disaster assistance for people all across the country, whose lives were devastated by extreme weather events, house democrats were also there. paging my traditional republican colleagues.
6:30 pm
it's time to get off the sidelines, break away from the extremist, get in the arena, so we can find a bipartisan path forward. reporter: the idea of empowering patrick mchenry to be an interim speaker or giving him the authority to oversee legislation? are you open to mchenry specifically? mr. jeffries: our focus right now relates not just to any one individual but to getting the institution reopened -- reopened. i have respect for patrick mchenry. i think he's respected on our side of the aisle. there are a whole host of other republicans who are respected on our side of the aisle. jim jordan is not one of them. reporter: what would you say to members of your caucus who said they're open to mchenry. have they come to you and said, hey we want to do something that empowers him so we can keep going? mr. jeffries: we continue to say we're seeking a bipartisan path forward that's open and genuine and want to agree in good faith.
6:31 pm
reporter: is is that not good faith? or likely? mr. jeffries: the informal conversations that have accelerate offord the last few day,000,000 hope now that it's clear jim jordan lacks the votes to be speaker, that those conversations whip accelerate this evening. reporter: when you say accelerate, what does that mean? do you have meetings planned with mchenry or other leaders? mr. jeffries: i have no meetings planned with mchenry but high level members on the democratic side of the aisle are ready to have that conversation. reporter: bipartisan conclusion, does that mean five or six republicans should vote for you or are democrats willing to vote for a republican? mr. jeffries: we have not at any point made this about any particular person on the other side of the aisle. house democrats want to be reasonable here wemple respect elections. we were disappointed that we
6:32 pm
failed to hold onto the house in november of 2022. but we're not election deniers. dewid overperform. we defied the rules of political gravity in a mid-term election in a president's first two years in office but the republicans now hold the gavels. we recognize that. we respect that. but the republicans are unable to function on their own right now. so there's only two paths. either you're going to continue to bend the knee to the most extreme members of your conference who are not interested in governing, or you can partner with democrats to do the business of the american people. reporter: about being part of the solution, are there assurance from democrats? mr. jeffries: i think it's important to reopen the house to take care of the health, safety and economic needs of the american people. it's important to reopen the house so we can stand by israel.
6:33 pm
it's important to reopen the house so we can fully fund the efforts of ukrainians who have bravely fought against aggression. reporter: have you heard anything from members on the other side coming to you guys for a bipartisan compromise? mr. jeffries: there have been ongoing informal conversations that have been undertaken over the last few days. i think there's a possibility that those can accelerate now that jim jordan clearly does not have the votes to be speaker. for good reason. jim jordan is the poster child for maga extremism. he is a clear and present danger to our democracy. there are many good men and women on the republican side of the aisle who are qualified to be the speaker of the house of representatives. there is no circumstance where jim jordan is one of them.
6:34 pm
reporter: is it about empowering a temporary speaker or a permanent speaker? mr. jeffries: all options are on the table. the goal is to reopen the house of representatives. reporter: would the speaker have to still have a power sharing agreement with the democrats? mr. jeffries: we do not use the phrase power sharing agreement. we recognize the republicans hold the gavel, we respect that, we're not election deniers. what is clear based on the track record in this congressional session, our republican colleagues cannot govern on their own. because they have moabs they have house republican conference who don't want to do anything as it relate it is advancing the needs of the american people. we saw that. on the default crisis. we saw that in terms of keeping the government woasm saw it as it relates to disaster relief. what more do my traditional
6:35 pm
republican colleague, who i respect, need to see? we need a path forward anchored in reasonableness and common sense. thank you, everyone. host: hakeem jeffries on the capitol steps about an hour ago telling reporters from the deems perspective where they see things stan right now after earlier today jim jordan, republican from ohio, failed on his first attempt to secure the speakership. jim jordan now saying the house will come back tomorrow, 11:00 a.m. eastern time, and he will try again with a second round of voting. he told reporters, quote, he'll keep going until there is a speaker. a fox news porter tweeting out, the house has gone 14 ds without a speak. the house went two weeks in 19 before electing harold cobb as speaker on the 63rd ballot. the house has taken one vote per
6:36 pm
speaker since mccarthy was ousted 14 days ago. this captured by getty images reporter earlier today in the chamber. jim jordan, center of your screen. conversing with warren davidson, hi colleague -- colleague, republican colleague from ohio who has been at his side while they were on the floor for that first round of voting today. and you'll note right behind jim jordan is where the former speaker, kevin mccarthy, sat, and in this image captured by the getty reporter, sharing a laugh. kevin mccarthy is with another member of the republican party there. and nbc reporter ending his day with this picture. the sun sets yet again on a speakerless house of representatives. tyrone in wilson, north carolina. democratic caller. we are getting your thoughts on how this all unfolded today.
6:37 pm
right here on c-span. in the house of representatives. tyrone, what are your thoughts? caller: my thoughts is, i wish mr. jeffries would get it. he's more concerned about the people and then the thing about this, they've been promising us our money that we need, stimulus check we haven't got it. i put many i faith in mr. jeffries. i'm thinking maybe he'll make some kind of arrangement, put a word in for the middle class people because we need sources too and as well, you know, i'm living out here with my mother, she has stage iv cancerring we have the help but they're not sending us the funds we need to get because where i live at in wilson, north carolina, i wish mr. jeffries could come and just walk through my neighborhood and look at how we live each and every day. host: all right, tyrone there for hakeem jeffries. dave sherman of punchbowl news
6:38 pm
tweeting out, it's not looking good for jordan. most of the 20 who voted against junior met after the vote and most of them are sticking with their opposition to the ohio republican. also, jordan has made little headway. the vote tomorrow as we noted, 11:00 a.m. eastern time. jesse in las vegas, a republican. let's hear from you. caller: i think it was a big mistake to oust mccarthy in the first place. but then the democrats talking about a bipartisan solution is a joke as well when they all vote, as a block, knowing full well they'll never have enough votes to elect a democratic speaker at this point in time. as far as i'm concerned, they ought to put mccarthy back in there. he has shown he can do the job. jordan is questionable in many people's eyes. host: so is there a bipartisan, i know you said that's laughable but is there a bipartisan
6:39 pm
candidate you can think of that comes to mind? caller: no. the way -- the way they voted historically -- host: too intrenched in party politics? you think they're too intrenched in party politics to vote across the aisle? caller: absolutely right. host: sharon in st. louis, missouri. hi, sharon. caller: it's just a very sad day for americans. i'm very disappointed with congress. that they're not in session. they should be working their butt off for the american people. they should not be taking any time off until they straighten out this mess and get a speaker in the house. whoever has the most votes at this point needs to be the speaker. i guess the republicans have a
6:40 pm
majority, they need to figure this out. find somebody. pick them. get back to work. host: sharon, 50% is 217. and so that's the number that somebody needs to get to. caller: right. i mean, it's very disappointing to me that they cannot figure out what they want to do. i mean our country has a lot of issues. and for them to take the rest of the day off is ridiculous. host: sharon there in missouri. melanie of cnn tweeting out, the idea of empowering interim speaker patrick mchenry is gaining some steam. the number of rrveg's interested in this plan is growing. sources tell annie graner of cnn and melanie, they may try to force a floor vote on a privileged resolution at some
6:41 pm
point. lots of hurdles and caveats to this plan. we'll be watching that here on c-span tomorrow morning on the "washington journal." of course we'll be taking your calling then -- your calls them too. and giving you an update at that point where things stand in the how were before they come in at 11:00 a.m. eastern time. robin in santa fe, new mexico. robin, your turn. clip hello. i have some out of the box suggestions for house speaker. one, liz cheney. two, chris isaak tee. three, larry hogan. and if the democrats partner up with some of the republicans, like they did on the c.r., then they get a certain number of vetoes or appointments as chairs as well as creation of some off the wall committees and get to
6:42 pm
have a point of privilege to bring some bills up for floor votes. host: all right. robin with some ideas there. how they can move forward in the house. julie who writes for axios is tweeting out right now, a source familiar says jordan's team is trying to do damage control after liking the scalise meeting. which backfired with scalise loyalists. seven republicans inhat first round of voting voted for steve scalise. after the first round of voting, it was reported that jim jordan went to seek help from steve scalise to whip the vote and it was leaked out by whoever that scalise was not going to help jim jordan's team. now you can see that reporting happening on capitol hill. we're also taking your text messages tonight.
6:43 pm
you can send us your text message, include your first name, city and state. here's one from new york. we shouldn't have hato go through this again, referring to what happened today. republicans' greatest fear is bipartisanship and the prosperity that would result. this is their greatest fear besides indictments. and susan from tennessee, i hope jeffries gets it. he's willing to work with publicans. jordan is only doing mr. trump's bidding. trump would love the government to shut down, i'm sure trump wants putin to win in the war in ukraine as well. alma in ottawa, kansas. republican. hi, alma. caller: hi. i just want to say, just forget about the maga republicans in the congress. and go to the other 200-something that aren't doing anything either.
6:44 pm
what's in it for them to stop this? why don't they get together and pick a good republican to run the house and be the chairman and forget about those other guys? you can outvote them if you just would. host: but who would that be? who would the candidate be? caller: i don't know. but there has to be somebody in there who cares more about the american people and getting our business done instead of molly coddling those other maga people who don't care about this country at all except for their own profit. i'm sorry. kind of bitter about this. host: all right. all right. allen in toledo, ohio. what do you say about this? caller: the only way to get over this insane voting impasse is for the house to adopt a rule
6:45 pm
that requires the members of the house to only vote for the nominee of the represented political parties. right now none of the republicans will vote for the democratic nominee. and the -- and none of the republicans except a few, like i say, will vote for the democratic nominee. and none of the democrats likewise will vote for the republican nominee. the last time the voting was done, congressman jordan failed to get in because of the defection of too many republicans. and they ended up voting for others. which is nonsense. so if the house would adopt a rule that only voting is allowed for the nominees of each political party, that would force the republicans to vote for the republican nominee and the republican nominee would get in. that's all i can say. host: all right. allen in toledo, ohio.
6:46 pm
julie of axios also sending this out. it backfired needily. this is a quote about this leak from the jordan-scalise meeting that hapned after the first round of voting. it backfired immediately. they were trying to put pressure on scalise and his followe and lay the groundwork f this to be a grudge match to divert attention from jdan's flaws. it didn't work at al it forced them to reopen with a chip, she write, with scalise reporters. we're getting your reaction to the speaker election. the first round of voting. the 20 republicans defected, jim jordan unable to secure the speakership. alvin in tampa, florida, democratic caller. hi, alvin. caller: how you doing today? i'm ready for jeffries but the
6:47 pm
biggest problem i have right here today, they need to get along. so much preparation in this world. and nobody mentioned the bible. it's all in revelation. people need to mention what's going to happen. things happen in the third world right now. it's truth. nobody mentions the bible. all this stuff is happening right now. we need to go back to the bible. everything like that. i tell you something. people start respecting each other, we'll see more. it's all about me, it's all about this person. that person. and all them say, why cant we all get along? host: all right. amid all this news coverage of the speaker race, debbie lesko, republican of arizona, put out a statement saying she won't run for re-election in 2024. she will not seek re-election.
6:48 pm
saying that the -- that congress is broken and she wants to spend more time with her family. we have another picture during the coverage today of the house, hanging out with friends, covering the house speaker. noting the reporters who were up in the tbalry watching the vote unfold earlier this afternoon. raymond in north carolina, republican, raymond what do you say about the speaker contest? caller: good evening. well, i think that these congress holdouts have to understand one thing. we're watching this. and people in their district are watching this. this is now, like it or not, a maga republic. the democrats are spending way too much money on all these stupid programs. they're spending money on down on the border, sending people up here to take jobs away from us. putting them up in hotels. feeding them.
6:49 pm
and when i have to go to the super bowl i can't even fill up my basket and it's other $150. this is a maga republic right now. we need to get this country back and it takes somebody strong like jim jordan to do it. host: charles in florida. hi, charles. caller: yeah, how are we doing tonight? why haven't we heard today about we the people, we the people, we the people? you know what, they haven't -- they have not supported we the people for a long time and it's time for us to, we the people, to say you know, hey, you know what, if you don't want to do the job, get out, you know. 212 people voted for jarvis. i don't know much about him. jon much about jordan. but i know one thing. there's 20 republicans that didn't vote period. and why didn't five of them cross the border and elect who had the my of theule?
6:50 pm
host: they voted, they just voted for somebody else besides jim jordan. caller: no according to the report, 20 republicans didn't vote period. host: six voted for kevin mccarthy, seven for steve scalise, let's see here, three voted for lee zeldin. and one for mike garcia. they voted for others than jim jordan. let's hear from terry who is in harriet, arkansas. caller: hello. an independent. i just wao let you know that i think jim jordad be great. however, keep hearing about maga extremists. this to me is not an extreme thing, america first. so please. i am all for jim jordan. unless we can get donald trump in there, thad be great.
6:51 pm
host: all right. we'll leave it there with terry. we'll be back tomorrow morning for the "washington journal." if you missed any of our coverage today you can find it if you go to our free mobile app, c-span now. >> c-span is your unfiltered view of government. we're funded by these television companies and more including cox. >> cox supports c-span as a public service. ong with these other television providers. giving you a front row seat to democracy. >> if you ever miss any of c-span's coverage, you can find it any time online at c-span.org. videos of key
