popular democratic president. he's made a point to stay out of the election cycle, expect that to happen once a nominee is announced lightly next summer. a long way to go. >> shannon: many months. we are on it. president trump won a social media battle during the debates by keeping his status as the most tweeted about a politician followed by former vice president joe biden. tech entrepreneur interred democratic candidate, not a politician before now also landed in the top six. the top tweeted moment was one democratic senator cory booker told biden he's dipping into the kool-aid and he doesn't know the flavor. an attack on his ability to speak for communities of color. the most searched candidate from last nights debate was congresswoman tulsi gabbard who told us last night she thinks google chose to block her ads at a critical time right after the last debate so she's suing the

search giant. former vice president joe biden got the most speaking time in last night's debate. this is a fox news alert, the justice department will not prosecute former fbi director james comey for leaking classified information. one official tells fox news everyone involved in the decision said it was not a close call. he wrote memos detailing his interactions with president trump in the days leading up to his firing, he then passed those documents onto a friend who gave them to "the new york times." president trump said he hasn't heard from the doj directly. >> i haven't spoken to them about that. i would be surprised because what he did was illegal. i would be surprised but i don't know everything about that. >> shannon: he said i'm confident all the reports will show honest public servants worked hard to protect this

country from the president. let's bring in republican senator who sits on the senate judiciary committee where you had some fireworks today. let's start with that, senator feinstein the ranking democrat said it's going to peel things back like the minimum standards for things like detentions at the border. democrats thought this and here is what senator patrick leahy had to say as you move forward with the vote. >> these rules are no longer in effect the same republicans who voted for them six months ago -- say the heck with it, tear them up. why are we so eager to discard our norms and principles? apparently the answer is for legislation at its core it gives the president what he wants in his political war on immigratio

immigration. >> shannon: what's political in a partisan sense? >> you had elected officials in a political branch of government trying to do the right thing. what was a political maneuver was the democrats fireworks in opposition to this bill. which is trying to undo a massive humanitarian crisis, it's being caused by drug cartels and facilitated by a distortion of u.s. law. >> shannon: doesn't have any chance in the house, is it even worth fighting? >> it's worth having the message about why it is we want to reform the decision about why it is we need to reform our immigration laws and why we need a safer country in place with countries like mexico and guatemala. an agreement make sure that somebody has to apply for asylum there rather than hear if they cross to the borders of a third country that we deem safe. >> shannon: what you make of critics who say those countries are truly safe, they have also got issues with dangerous people and dangerous conditions that

people are coming here to get away from and to ask them to stop in those places is not fair. >> let's say you are fleeing from el salvador or honduras and you are claiming you are subject to political persecution there. you are not going to be subject to the same type of political persecution there that you would be in your home country. relative to your home country, it is safe. mexico and guatemala are safe relative to those other countries. we are attracting people to come here in these caravans and we are enriching the drug cartels by allowing our own laws to be distorted. lindsey graham's bill would fix that and that's why i support it. >> shannon: let's talk about the debate last night. he talked about last couple of nights you seen some of it. they say the democratic base has become so radicalized that the positions necessary to win support, socialism, the green new deal and impeachment among them are repellents to the rest of the country and ensure a loss

in november 2020. is that overly confident on behalf of the president? >> i love the fact that he uses repellents. that is a really good description. we are to use it more in our day-to-day conversation. this case is absolutely right. democratic party has moved so far to the progressive left it's scaring people. people are realizing they are embracing something that we have rejected in this country which is a bigger command-and-control economy, we don't want that. >> shannon: one of the things i was surprised did not come up wasn't the idea of judges and the supreme court. if we don't hear much discussion at all over the last couple of nights about it but this is what chuck schumer said, a lot of the folks you guys are put through to the federal bench in recent days. >> the parade of narrow-minded, often bigoted people who we are putting on the bench simply because they have been members of "the federalist" society is unprecedented in this country.

come on back to united states, come on back to ohio. >> shannon: we have an inside scoop on the terror of talks in beijing. president trump says the u.s. is prepared to levy new tariffs on $300 billion on chinese goods, as trade negotiations between the two largest countries install. fox news edward lawrence has his own inside look from chinese sources. >> president trump lighting a fire under president xi jinping, he's giving a september 1st deadline for tariffs to go into effect on everything else that china imports into the united states. chinese sources are saying the directive inside of beijing is to decouple from reliance on the united states and replace what they buy or make it in china. china telling us they refused to add back any of the concessions removed from the trade agreement and once the u.s. to trust china that it will enforce intellectual property rights.

china will not budge and will not change their laws. president trump saying tariffs on the next round of $300 billion worth of chinese imports will start at 10% hinting they may not stay at 10%. >> i did more than anybody thought with the first $250 billion and the 10% is for a short-term period and i can always do much more or do less depending on what happens with respect to a deal. in the meantime, we are going to pay a tariff, they are going to pay a tariff. >> he agreed to buy agriculture to the u.s., it hasn't happened yet, he is frustrated with how slowly china is moving saying president xi wants a trade deal in the end. there is another meeting scheduled between the two trade teams in september, we will have to see if that meeting happens while under tariffs possibly. >> shannon: president trump says he is confident in his

trade strategy, his critics say it could end up being costing to you the american consumer. let's bring in robert spalding who's got a new book out, stealth war. how china took over while america's elite slept. >> great to be here. >> shannon: i want to read something from jake parker, he's a senior vice president at the u.s. china business council. he says we are concerned this escalation will drive the chinese from the negotiating table as opposed to increasing leverage. he talks about decoupling, china is advising to walk away from the u.s. is the strategy working were no not? >> the chinese are the ones that walked away from the deal, there is a 150 page agreement they took back, decided they didn't want to have any part of it from then and that's about two months ago, i've been saying they

aren't going to have a deal, they're going to wait to see what happens in 2020. they don't want to deal, what they did want and what they have but that g20 was to delay as long as possible imposition of a further tariff. they like their control driven economy, they learned after 2008 to rely heavily on their state owned enterprises and they have worked ever since to strengthen the part of their economy that is driven by their state owned enterprises. the chinese don't want a deal, they are trying to delay to wait for elections in 2020. >> shannon: in the meantime for the first times, chinese toys, clothing, shoes, consumer electronics like iphones will face penalties, that will add to the tariffs that trump announced in may and potentially lead for higher prices for americans, is that where this will be tougher for the president as the cost of every day living goes up?

>> when we talk about the price of goods going up, there is no mention of the fact that after 2001 from 2001 to 2017, we lost 3.1 million american jobs, each one of those jobs had four or five jobs in support of it in local communities. all those communities have been devastated, not only did we lose all of those jobs, we started to see an imposition of fentanyl that caused tens of thousands of deaths in those same communitie communities. we may have some higher prices on some goods but more americans are going to be working and employed in factories as long as we stay true to the path. >> shannon: let me ask you about north korea also. another launch -- today under the headline, north korea carried out its third missile test. alex ward writes if anyone thought president trump's personal friendship with kim jong il and would make these

threatening moves go away, it's time to think again. do you view this as threatening? what do you think is the messag message? >> you have to look at the fact that if you're looking at central command, iran is causing problems. if you're looking at european command, russia's causing problems. if you're looking at pacific command, north korea is causing problems. what to all three of these things share? in a very strong economic relationship with china. there are tens of thousands of north koreans working to northeastern china and sending money back to the regime to keep it going. every time we look to north korea that sang saying you launched another missile -- it's not just a threat to the united states. it shows the efforts that china makes to have distractions that keep us from looking at what they are doing. >> shannon: does it mean china isn't going to be the best partner and doing things like enforcing u.n. sanctions against north korea? >> china is going to do what is

in china's interest in right now they believe the united states is sowing dissent in hong kong. there is tremendous fear by the chinese communist party about the freedoms that we hold dear. one of the things they believe is that we love those freedoms just for the sole purpose of wanting to overthrow the chinese communist party. it is a fear that drives them to do a lot of these things. >> shannon: thank you for weighing in, great to have you with us tonight. for more, the chinese army is releasing propaganda video for its hong kong-based troops. the video shows chinese troops practicing antiriot drills amid uncertainty about whether the military is going to intervene in hong kong's summer of protest. police arrested 44 people on writing charges which carry a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment. a handful of american flags and

from two new opinion polls. government run health care was front and center in the democratic debates this week and take a look at these numbers. in the fox news poll, the majority of democrats who say they plan to vote in the states primary favor -- democrats support medicare for all while 90% support medicare for all with a private insurance opt out. registered republicans were 14% and 46% respectively on those questions. back to the fox news poll, 82% of democratic primary voters say they have a favorable opinion of president obama's 2010 health care reform, as do 52% of all voters.

on immigration issues, the fox poll found that the 75% of democratic primary voters favor allowing refugee political asylum while 50% of all voters agree with that idea. a slight majority, 51% of democratic primary voters support decriminalizing entering the united states without proper documentation while 34% of all voters favor that idea. on the question of providing health insurance to make undocumented immigrants, 53% of democratic primary voters say yes compared to 32% of voters overall. a lot of food for thought and debate among democrats vying to be their party's presidential nominee. >> shannon: jonathan hunt, thank you very much. with all of those positions in mind, the last couple of nights seemed to expose a growing lift within the democratic party, progressives suggesting the obama administration was not

left-leaning enough. joining me now to break it down, democratic strategist zach friend and contributing editor to "the daily caller" derek hunter, welcome to you both. tim miller who was communications director for jeb bush said it's mind-boggling there would be several candidates taking shots at barack obama when he is probably popular, trump isn't in the whole point of the enterprise is beating trump. what's going on? >> for once we have a little bit of bipartisanship. republicans have long said that the obama administration was a disaster and for once democrats agreed. it's interesting how far to the left the democratic party has moved in the last few years. barack obama was incredibly progressive and left-wing and it isn't good enough anymore just a few short years later. it's fun to watch when they attack their own and joe biden didn't know how to respond to it. he was taken aback by the

harshness of the criticism. >> shannon: he seemed to suggest that this morning in reaction to the debate last night. obama lost, as record is too far right wing. it's kind of nuts to watch. >> i agree with tim miller, over 95% of democratic voters still support president obama and his policies. it was a gift by some of the candidates on stage last night to vice president biden, they made this more about president obama than about to vice president biden and the more he can tie himself to make president obama, the better he will do and some of these primary states. it was an interesting move, i wouldn't recommend it if i were advising these candidates. why they went after

president obama last night, i'm not sure what the strategy was. >> shannon: you remember the moment senator booker turned to the former vice president and said you have been clinging to make president obama wanted to talk about your involvement in the administration. booker saying to him you don't want to be associated with him when you don't want to to be tagged with one of his policies but you're spending a lot of time associating yourself with him. obama continues to stay out of the endorsement game. >> that is tradition but when your record is being assaulted, i would think the president would weigh in and talk about how proud he is of his own record. joe biden if he has been a little bit quicker could say i'm proud of everything he did. he could explain the record number of deportations, was it an accounting gimmick, they counted people they turned back at the border as deportations to inflate those numbers?

overall, it's tough to defend the obama administration that we were told for years that you can't change obamacare because it's settled law. you can't do it, republicans can't even tweak it. now democrats want to scrap it completely, it's amazing how quickly this changes. they have to cannibalize themselves. i'm perfectly fine watching -- that made the debate last night what was otherwise boring, it made it somewhat interesting. >> shannon: here is what president trump said at the debate at his rally in cincinnati. >> the rage filled democratic party is trying to tear america apart. being led by four left-wing extremists who reject everything that we hold dear. >> shannon: for gig and the folks on capitol hill, the freshman he is not happy about. he continues talking about all these extreme positions. when you have the candidates talking about attacking the

supreme court in legalizing, crossing the border illegally and hot, taking away one's private health care, are they making the president's job easier for him by taking such progressive positions? >> not every candidate actually is. you have a couple top-tier candidates such as -- i think it's a fair point to say a lot of the air and oxygen aren't necessarily with the democratic voters are. i recognize some of the polling that was shown earlier in the segment, realistically half of all democratic primary voters self identify as conservative or moderate, most of the general election voters will go through the rust belt and the midwest. to win a general election you will have to have policies more in line with the biden policies. >> i think the democrats are lucky to ratings for these debates are so low because of those voters, the blue-collar workers that i grew up in

actually watched these debates and heard what these people are advocating for and promising to do to the american people, the floor would fall out from underneath them. they are lucky people aren't paying attention right now. >> to be fair on that, in 2016, we had a very similar component in the republican primary as well. we can't define the entire democratic party based on some of the candidates that are running but i recognize the overall debate is different from the country as a whole. >> shannon: whether folks want to watch them or not. we cover them for you so you know everything you need to know. in the meantime, thank you both. corey lewandowski could be ditching the swamp for the granite state, president trump's former campaign manager is reportedly seriously considering running for senate in new hampshire in 2020 against democratic senator jeanne shaheen. majority leader
