5:02 am
that to vacate. kevin mccarthy took to the microphone and here is what he had to say. doing the right thing is not always easy, but it is necessary. i don't regret standing up or choosing government over grievance. it is my responsibility. it is my job. i do not regret negotiating, our government is designed to find compromise. i will not run for speaker again, i'll have the conference pick somebody else. i hope you realize everyday i did the job, regardless whether you underestimated me or not -- >> griff: house republicans plunge into chaos without a clear plan. you are looking at eight republicans who ousted mccarthy, crane, matt gaetz, bob good, nancy mace, rosendale. if you break it, you buy it.
5:03 am
these eight republicans now own this chaos. the leader matt gaetz, weighing in last night. listen. >> i'm not here to make a judgement on where mr. steve scalise stands with rahabilitation or recovery, he is the type of person i could see myself supporting, supporting tom emmer, jody harrington, kevin hern, and people like lee zeldin are well thought of. >> griff: only thing certain, we are in for a lengthy and bitter battle with emotion raw. kelly armstrong on with you guys earlier talking about it. watch. >> the cost of my vote for a new speaker is rule change to our conference, i'm not interested in petty personal attack, i would like to have a position where one vote, particularly one of the most extreme votes

5:06 am
>> trey: oh, they love it. we have this gift of leadership we were given last november, narrow, but a gift of leadership. the whole country is uch watching. of all the problems, republicans have decided to air out personal grievances. hakeem jeffries and everybody is saying, have at it, you won't be speaker for long, we will retake the house next fall and right now they would be right. >> ainsley: one who voted to oust is from north carolina nancy mace, she stood with matt gaetz on that. what about the base, what is their reaction? are they for this or against it? >> trey: quite candidly, they are for it, they have been given bad information.
5:07 am
i could have told you last of in, kevin would have been better off having a slight loss than a slight win. now the eight craziest people in the conference. the south carolina is mad at kevin because he wouldn't put gun control on the floor. the guy from virginia talks about having a majority of the majority and he votes with seven other people. only eight republicans sided with democrats to change the speaker. how in the world do ygovern tha gallery of rogues. >> lawrence: i always appreciate how candid and this is part of the reason you left the body. in 2015, he was supposed to be speaker back then and couldn't shore up support. a lot of folks thought it wasn't likely he would be speaker this

post" crowd and "new york times" crowd, correct? >> trey: listen, nobody felt that comment more acutely than i did and he was on with sean and called me immediately after he said it and said, i'm sorry, i was tired, i shouldn't have done the interview. he made a mistake. no one worked harder to get that majority and if it hadn't been for kevin, the democrat would have the house and the senate and the white house. see if the new speaker is willing to say goodbye to his wife and kids for as long as kevin has. >> steve: talk about the next speaker, we have a list of potential candidates, house majority leader steve scalise mentioned a bunch already. matt gaetz said he liked him. house majority whip tom emmer, tom cole of oklahoma --
