palestinians gathered supplies over the weekend for ramadan. the first day of fasting is today. the region is looking forward to this friday to see what will happen at the compound in jerusalem. fridays during ramadan have been a flash point for the region. >> dana: we're paying attention to that. thank you. >> sandra: san francisco is now cracking down on its crime surge. voters have approved a pair of law and order ballot measures last week as the city manages skyrocketing crime. spiraling homelessness and rampant drug use. claudia cowen is live in san francisco on this for us. what are you seeing? >> good morning, sandra. voters in this liberal city moved to the center last tuesday passing two ballot measures including one that supports police. this measure gives the significantly understaffed police department more surveillance power like license plate readers and cameras and less oversight from a police

commission whose policies limited officers' ability to give chase. police say the tech noll goelz help them catch retail carves and other suspects without dangerous high-speed pursuits. >> the surveillance, cameras, license plate readers where it will help investigations tracking and getting all that without really putting either us at risk or the public. so to me that's a win/win. >> voters demanded that millions in public assistance come with accountability. passing an initiative that requires welfare recipients to undergo drug screenings. passage of these measures comes two years after voters fired a district attorney who was widely seen as soft on crime only to see their downtown ravaged by professional thieves. store closures and open air drug use. a record 806 people died from overdoses here last year. understanding voters have had it with the status quo and facing a

guard, too. this is not to way to solve the problem. >> it is not. we have the resources to solve the problem despite the fact all the police departments are shorthanded because of recruitment and retention issues. putting a military unit into our subways very confined area, they aren't used to the rules of engagement relative to police incidents. they have not maybe fully integrated with the police departments they are supposed to be working with. you can't do that stuff on a dime. you are asking for certain problems. no knock on the national guard. they have a different mission. this is a massively expensive way to avoid what's really the issue. to fix what we had and that is to make the prosecutors proper cute. >> sandra: i think i spoke to you shortly after we had tom cotton on last week called a racist in 2020 when he said bring in the troops in the "new york times" piece. here we are.

democrats are turning on one another with the crime. they have to deal with this. a growing problem to the point they can't look away anymore. >> it is emblematic of the schism in the democratic party these days on criminal justice issues in particular. those who want to govern moderately and be perceived as moderates but a very progressive wing which has a lot of energy and very vocal these days committed to what he with talked about last week, which is defund, destroy, deflect. they had that opening post george floyd. they took advantage of that. you had in new york, for instance, all the criminal justice reforms were written by the defense bar. no law enforcement input there. so now you are seeing the results. they destroyed their municipalities and now deflect mode because it's an election

year. >> dana: in san francisco they made changes in terms of what they wanted. they did the same in d.c. last week. new york is starting. kathy hochul wouldn't do this for no reason. politics are involved. could it actually change? if you were to get rid of the progressive d.a.s, how quickly might you see crime go down or people feel a little bit more like the quality of life gets better? >> you would see it quickly. there are a number of other things that our elected decisions made here that also need to be undone. among them is the sanctuary status. because migrant crime will continue to be a thing. it is a thing. then we'll have to start to look at ways to not only incarcerate but deport. venezuela doesn't take them back. then we have to come up with a work around for that. maybe they have to go to federal prison on big rico cases because it is an organized entity. there are other things that really do need to be done. of course, the first thing that needs to be done as you say is get the progressive d.a.s to do

their jobs. the problem is, in a number of these places particularly in new york they have baked into cake the fact that we can't do that much prosecution. why? because they are closing jails here in new york, ryker's will be closed over the next couple of years. we'll go down without any resource by half. you think we're not looking up anybody now? imagine cutting our criminal justice incarcerations by half. that's where we're going to be. consider that. >> sandra: it's a big warning. >> dana: thanks, i guess. good to get the information out there. >> sandra: a big day looming on capitol hill tomorrow. special counsel robert hur will testify before the house panel laying out his findings on president biden's mishandling of classified documents. david spunt is live at the justice department on what to expect. >> good morning. dana good morning. the hur report 345 pages, and it was clear right out of the gate that president biden would not

be charged with a crime. the report reads in part we conclude no criminal charges are warranted in this matter. we would reach the same conclusion even if department of justice policy did not foreclose criminal charges against a sitting president. it contains picture after picture of classified documents kept in torn and tattered boxes in the president's delaware garage. sensitive documents relating to afghanistan and his time as v.p. reads on page 223 there is evidence when mr. biden left office in 2017 he willfully retained his classified notebooks. he knew he kept classified information in notebooks stored in his house and he knew he was not allowed to do so. there are also sections of the hur report that call into question the president's memory quote he did not remember even within several years when his son beau died and his memory appeared hazy when describing the afghanistan debate that was once so important to him. source close to the special counsel tells fox news it was not robert hur that brought up

beau biden's death but the president himself. what really happened during the interview is in a transcript and despite house republicans' issuing a subpoena for d.o.j. to produce that transcript they didn't receive the document or an audio recording as requested. it is not up to the justice department to release the transcript but up to the white house. the president's staff could invoke executive privilege. there is nothing d.o.j. can do about that. this happens tomorrow on capitol nil public in front of cameras. we haven't seen that recently with the hunter biden investigation behind closed cameras. this will take several hours tomorrow. back to you. >> sandra: a busy week. david spunt, thank you. >> thanks. >> form of transportation sent through the air at nearly the speed of sound in a metal tube is the safest way to travel in america. if we want to maintain that, as we must, that means an enormous amount of rigor in dealing with

he is a murderer and to worry about his sensitivities. but in the larger sense, it's very consistent with president biden's pattern. he worries about the politically correct police on the left whether it's israel. in general he will say i support israel but criticize specifics like the battle plan. all the specific criticism. in the border stuff he is blaming republicans and then he doesn't want to say this guy who is a murderer was illegal. that's why he is so underwater. i think no matter what he can do, no matter what senator warnock says, people are going to blame joe biden and the democratic party for what is happening at the border. >> sandra: over the weekend what we heard from pete buttigieg in the president's cabinet defending the dismantling of the

out of haiti as gang violence threatens to bring down the violence. they have overtaken police forces and it could put more pressure on the southern border. antony blinken is heading to jamaica to talk about the crisis in haiti. >> sandra: 50 people were injured on a boeing jet flying from australia to new zealand. strong movement on the plane led to the injuries. more on what we're learning here. alex. >> terrifying morning for these passengers. another headache for boeing. 50 people are wounded after this flight experienced taking place from sydney to auckland earlier this morning. the boeing 787-nine dreamliner had a technical issue causing the plane to lose altitude. dozens were wounded.

many taken to the hospital upon landing. one person is in serious condition. other crew members or passengers had mild to moderate injuries. some on board were thrown to the ceiling when the plane plummeted. it happened mid flight. it landed safely. the airline said it regrets any inconvenience and discomfort the situation may have caused its passengers. all of this comes after some technical problems on another flight today departing from the same airport. ua ual830 left sydney headed to san francisco this morning. a mechanical issue the boeing 777 turned back to australia and landed two hours later. the latest in a string of issues for boeing. last week a boeing 737 had to make an emergency landing that was portland. it was just on thursday when a boeing 777 lost one of its tires

that fell and crashed onto a vehicle. no one was injured in that incident. >> sandra: growing number of incidents for sure. dana. >> dana: you may remember former president trump basically wiped out isis destroying the terror group in its last stronghold in iraq and syria. the islamic state is back and with a vengeance today plotting for attacks from its new safe haven in afghanistan. joining us now retired four star general jack keane. how big is the threat, sir? >> it's a growing menace for sure and something that president biden's military advisors from the on-scene commander in afghanistan all the way to the chairman and secretary of defense, director of the c.i.a. and all of our allies all six nations there with us in afghanistan all said keep the forces here to prevent isis and al qaeda from growing

into a menace that will threaten our countries. what did we do? we made a decision to conduct an unconditional surrender. pulled out our three c.i.a. bases, seven military basis shut down and we said we will still maintain contact with afghanistan over the horizon. an eight hour flight by an airplane to get there. eight hours to return is not much capability trying to keep your eyes and ears on what is going on. this is a menace that's growing. it is attacking inside of afghanistan. it is beginning to attack the region and it will grow into a menace that can attack europe and the united states. that is what we brought on ourselves by that awful decision. you mentioned president trump. yes, he destroyed the caliphate but what did he also do? kept forces in syria and in iraq where the caliphate was, minimum

zone inside urban centers. when the sound of the guns come people normally leave. hamas doesn't let them leave. israelis have moved them away as best as they can and it resulted in civilian casualties. the rose has to be pinned. the reason for the casualties is hamas. we have this thing twisted and blaming israel for that. it is not the case. israel has to finish this. dana, what they are about supported by the iranians is make the security situation inside israel for the israeli people, make that so vulnerable that people don't want to live there. that's what this is all about. if we let hamas live again because we don't destroy the remaining battalions and their leaders they will rearm and reattack and make israel vulnerable once again and erodes the state of israel.
