this morning on "world news this morning on "world news now" -- shot down. iran's armed forces say they shot down an unmanned american spy plane and issued a warning to the u.s. military. >> now there are serious concerns about that downed drone and what iraq might learn from it. it's monday, december 5th. and good monday morning. i'm dan kloeffler in for rob nelson. >> i'm sunny hostin. the u.s. is admitting it lost track of a drone last week over afghanistan. so this could be that missing spy plane, but the question is -- why hasn't iran shared pictures of it to prove the drone was shot down? >> yeah, a lot of back and forth. what is the real story? we'll take a look at that in a minute.
3:01 am
also this morning, country singer mindy mccready was found in a closet with her son zander. the legal battle is far from over. what is next for her and her son? this bizarre custody battle is increasing. >> she is pregnant with twins. >> complicated issue. >> a lot involved there. and later at half-hour, history is made in scotland where two pandas arrived from china. talk about a party -- they got the royal treatment. even a parade. >> panda watch. monday morning style. first on this monday, though could one of the most cutting edge american spy planes being in enemy hands this morning? well iran is claiming it shot down a new generation of u.s. drones inside its borders and it is vowing now to retaliate. >> but if it's true, the bigger threat could come from what secrets the drone might reveal. here is abc's martha raddatz. >> reporter: the claim came on iranian state television, quoting sources saying iran had shot down an unmanned spy plane in the eastern part of the country which borders afghanistan.
3:02 am
but what was most disturbing, the iranians said it was an rq-170, one of the super secret drones, although it has appeared on the internet, that can presumably operate without detection. the iranians have lied about such things in the past, but alarms went off a few hours later when the u.s. said in a statement that they had lost control of a u.s. unarmed reconnaissance aircraft over western afghanistan. the u.s. will not say what type of drone crashed. but it was not shot down. although a u.s. senior military official told abc news, we are assuming iran has something. there are provisions built into drones to protect sensitive technology. if contact is lost, that information can be remotely erased. but if this is indeed a stealth drone, pieces of the skin itself could be used to try to duplicate stealth surfaces.
3:03 am
remember the stealth helicopter that went down in the bin laden raid? pakistan reportedly let china have a look at that technology. >> there are important secrets that can be lost either by looking at the kind of material that is used on the skin of the stealth airplane or looking at the shapes. >> reporter: this comes at a tense time with iran, reports that they continue to work on nuclear weapons, tighter sanctions and recent storming of the british embassy by iranian hardliners. but iran has failed to release any images of a drone it may or may not have, u.s. officials are wondering why. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. that's the question, why not send the pictures and sort of gloat over the fact that this drone, they have it, and it's not damaged. because i think they're saying it is minimally damaged. >> if this is the case, it's the first time you will have a highly sensitive surveillance plane in an adversary's hands.

romney/gingrich for the republican nomination after the bombshell over the weekend. the field reduced by just one. >> i am suspending by presidential campaign. >> reporter: on sunday the rest of the republican field couldn't say enough nice things about cain hoping to snag his supporters and endorsement. >> newt gingrich is most likely to benefit from herman cain's departure because he likes newt gingrich and is likely to say good things about newt gingrich. >> reporter: more good news for gingrich leading in the iowa poll. the former house speaker moved up in new hampshire. romney is ahead 16 points there. is it now a two-man race? >> i was supposedly dead in june and july. i'm apparently not. so i'm not going to say that any of my friends can't have surprises. >> reporter: mitt romney is starting to feel the heat. >> i've been able to withstand the scrutiny and still remain a
