and they like it a lot less. these findings published in the american sociological review will come as no surprise to millions of working women. researchers found they spent 48.3 hours per week, 40% of their waking time, doing at least two things at once. fathers spent 38.9 hours per week multitasking. women's multitasking often involves childcare and housework. while men are more likely to be talking to several people at once and supervising kids' recreation. while men generally have no problem with juggling those jobs, the authors say women feel stressed and conflicted by being exposed to scrutiny and judgment. not surprisingly, the researchers recommend that fathers lift more of the load when it comes to house keeping and child care. i'm dr. timothy johnson. >> the floor is yours. i know you have a lot you want

one cut by the postmaster is now making history. for the first time in 40 years, the post office will no longer guarantee next day delivery of your letter even if you pay extra. we have been calling it snail mail for years. by next spring, letters will take longer to get where they're going. >> we have been talking about dire financial straits of the post office. this is the practical results. sign of the times. >> it is. >> life has changed, how we correspond with each other. also this morning, what jerry sandusky's accusers are planning to do when the coach appears in court on sexual assault charges next week. also some insight this morning into why sandusky's legal team is letting him talk when he seems to only be making his case worse. these interviews i find beyond disturbing. >> i can't wait to hear the inside scoop about the lawyer's strategy. doesn't make sense to me. >> what could possibly be the strategy? >> we'll see. and later this half-hour, a real emergency for paramedics and firefighters. their fire station invaded by bed bugs. ahh! no laughing matter. >> no one likes a bed bug story. it's creepy, isn't it? we'll get to that in a second. we begin with the drastic

changes ahead for the postal service. thousand of employees now expected to lose their jobs. >> that's right. mail is going to take longer to arrive. abc's scott goldberg with more on the cutbacks. good morning, scott. >> reporter: rob, sunny, we don't use pens and paper like we used to, and that's why the postal service says it is drowning in red ink. if this is how you still pay bills and send letters you might soon be alone. >> there is really hardly any reason to come here aside from shipping a physical item. almost a relic. >> getting there. >> reporter: because e-mail and computers are costing the postal service truckloads, it's moving forward with a plan to save $3 billion. this spring they'll shutter more than half of the country's mail processing centers. eliminating some 35,000 jobs. those consolidations will lengthen the distance mail has to travel, so instead of taking the normal one to three days, first-class mail could now take two to three days. >> american public pays bills on line, more than 50% do today. we can't sit back and wait for another, five, six, ten years

before we make these changes. >> reporter: the postal service wants to cut delivery from six days a week to five. cut pensions. and close some 3,700 post offices across the country. >> staying ahead of the cost curve means we have got to pull out significant excess capacity out of our network. >> reporter: congress has to approve the changes and there are skeptics on capitol hill who say all of these cuts just give customers more reasons to send letters and packages through another carrier. the postal service does not get tax dollars to fund its operations, so even though congress oversees the postal service its funding comes directly from the money we pay to mail and ship things. rob, sunny. >> well, starting january 22nd, price of a stamp will go up to 45 cents. they say if they raised the price to 63 cents a stamp, it would erase the budget shortfall, but it would take an action by congress for that to happen. >> that probably isn't going to happen. you know i think what we need to

be concerned about is patients who do mail order prescriptions? they expect this timely delivery of pripgds drugs. -- of prescription drugs. that will be a problem. magazines. i want my magazine on time. >> netflix folks. big changes. we go to e-mail. that's it. change the world. well, facing an end-of-the-month deadline, both sides on capitol hill appearing to give a little in the tax showdown. under a new bipartisan compromise, the current tax cut would be extended for 160 million americans. employers would get a break. paid for by a 2% tax on those who make more than $1 million a year. some small business owners would be protected from that extra tax. republicans in iowa who plan to attend january's gop caucus are now backing newt gingrich in a big way. our new poll released overnight, showing 33% of iowa's republicans favor the former speaker. mitt romney and ron paul in a

distant second place. texas governor, former front-runner rick perry, seven points behind them. 43% believe gingrich has best experience compared to gop rivals. 29% say he can beat president obama. trying to build on that momentum, gingrich here in the big apple for a closed door meeting with donald trump. with more about this unlikely political alliance here is abc's jake tapper with "your voice, your vote." >> reporter: riding a wave of poll numbers and publicity, former house speaker, newt gingrich visited donald trump in manhattan where he continued to talk about changing the culture of poverty by putting poor children to work. >> i suggested to donald trump that he adopt a program of apprentices and take one of the poorest schools in new york city and create ten apprenticeships paid for part-time work. and he liked the idea a lot. he understood what i was getting at. >> reporter: some republicans disparage the role played by

trump, a reality star and real estate mogul. saying he fosters a circus-like atmosphere. not newt. >> donald trump is a great businessman. we have to be open to new ways of doing thing and new ways of approaching things. >> there are candidates with loyal supporters like congressman ron paul. in some ways, the republican race seems to be coalescing against former governor mitt romney going after gingrich for being a career politician. gingrich wasn't having it. reminding voters of romney's forays into politics. >> i don't know that you ought to count running for the senate in 1994, running for governor, then running for president for six years. >> reporter: romney for his part made it clear he is watching gingrich carefully and is able to draw his own distinctions. >> said last week something about repealing portions of the child labor law.

reality show. interesting times, huh? >> very. >> be sure to watch saturday night's debate here on abc news. george stephanopoulos and diane sawyer will host the event. it starts at 9:00 p.m. eastern. 6:00 pacific. it should be good. former governor rod blagojevich is going back to court as his sentencing begins. he could face ten or more years in prison for trying off to sell president obama's former senate seat. the hearing promises to be full of blagojevich's trademark drama since he's expected to speak to the judge directly. his sentence will be pronounced tomorrow. those hoping to attend next week's hearing for jerry sandusky will have to win a lottery. applications for seats can be filed tomorrow on a pennsylvania courthouse website. those attending will get an earful. as abc's jim avila explains. >> reporter: jerry sandusky may soon face his accusers. prosecutors plan on calling all eight alleged victims to testify at next week's preliminary hearing. abc news has learned from sources close to the case that sandusky's second high

profile interview has so incensed his accusers they're anxious to tell their stories. >> first he serially abused my client. and then he has to hear sandusky deny that he did those things. >> sandusky told "the new york times" over the weekend he is being turned into a monster by prosecutors who are mistaking fatherly affection for sexual abuse. >> i didn't -- do those things. >> reporter: when given yet another chance to answer the simple question of whether he is sexually attracted to children, the former coach needed off-camera coaching. >> if say, no, i'm not attracted to boys, that's not the truth. because -- i am attracted to -- young people. boys, girls. >> yeah but not sexually. you're attracted because you enjoy spending time -- >> right, i enjoy -- that's what i was trying to say -- >> then answer that.

[ siren ] typically the fire bell gets firemen jumping out of their beds, but for some tampa, florida, firefighters, it was something else. >> something else indeed. bed bugs have infested their firehouse and costing taxpayers a pretty penny to clean it up. our correspondent from wfts reports. >> reporter: the paramedics and firefighters of tampa station 15 spend most of the morning running to fires and medical calls. [ sirens ] >> reporter: which is probably fine by them because their firehouse has been invaded by bed bugs. >> this is a nymph, this is an adult. >> reporter: this is what they look like in an enlarged photo. sometime in mid-september, the unwanted roommates found their way into the sleeping quarters of the firehouse. now firefighters are throwing out uniforms and bedding. a bed bug expert is spraying the crew quarters with eco-exempt oil trying to kill the critters. fire rescue department and taxpayers have spent thousand trying to get rid of the bugs. the folks at massy pest control say they have gotten rid of most but not all of them. >> we have done a heat treatment, follow up treatment, and it looks like we may have

one popping up sporadically at this point. >> reporter: they keep spraying and planning a new angle of attack, and the cost is growing. >> we are probably going to remove some carpeting. we are evaluating replacing bedding and some of that is going to be appropriate to do so. so we don't have an issue with doing that. the right thing to do. >> reporter: they hope they won't have to replace the bunker gear which would be even more costly. >> wow. scary stuff there. firefighters now either sleeping on sofas or they're in sleeping bags on the other side of the building until they get problem worked out. >> i can't get past the bed bug thing. afghanistan late last week. in case of malfunction, it's designed to circle until it picks up a signal again or until it runs out of gas. which means it could have glided into iran largely intact. the drone is designed to automatically erase its sensitive data, but even if it did, the drone's skin which keeps it invisible from radar, could be an intelligence bonanza. >> if they're trying to figure out how to detect american stealthy systems in the future, now they have got something that allows them to do that. >> reporter: the iranians have not shown pictures of the drone they say they have, but that may be because they don't want to reveal just how much or how little was left of the aircraft. martha raddatz. abc news, washington. >> it's significant. military analysts are now questioning if iran shot down the drone as opposed to hackers sort of messing with the systems and bringing it down that way. lot of questions still out
