learning more about his movements after his killing spree began. there is new surveillance video and the discovery of weapons in his burned-out truck. the latest piece of evidence is this surveillance video from an auto parts store in san diego county. it appears him throwing a military belt and a bullet magazine into a dumpster. it was recorded monday the day after bodies of two people were found in a parking lot. they said police found weapons inside his burned-out truck which you may recall turned up thursday. and overnight the lapd announced that the 2007 case that got dorner fired from the department for allegedly lying is now being reopened by the police chief. authorities say that firing is what ignited dorner's revenge-driven killing spree. >> he's doing it because he wants to ensure that the public knows that the los angeles police department is fair and transparent. >> we also learned that dorner may have called the father of a shooting victim just to

opportunity him. abc news learned that a man claiming to be dorner taunted former police captain randall kwan after he allegedly killed kwan's daughter. according to a federal warrant, dorner told kwan he should have done a better job protecting his daughter. in the newsroom, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> thank you. back here in the bay area there's new information about the man arrested on friday for trying to blow up a bank of america branch in oakland. 27-year-old mathieu l is charged with attempted use after kep of mass destruction. abc7 news reporter sergio has more. >> police first took mathieu into custody at his father's san jose home. his father called for help. >> he was held in what was called a 51-50 hold.

in other words, there were problems he was a danger to himself or somebody else. >> at the time his father also told police about the ak-47 he had along with three high-capacity mag scenes. once in the court stempniak they said the extent of his mental health issues became clear. >> the court was really concerned that he was at least bipolar and possibly schizophrenic, and that he had a history of delusional thinking, of fantasies. >> according to the fbi criminal complaint, he connected with their undercover operative shortly after being released from the santa clara county jail. as part of the planning for the bank ever america bomb plot, he writes he laughed and hugged the athas he decided where their bomb-ladened s.u.v. would be parked in order to maximize the damage.

the man believed he was working with the taliban operative, but he wondered how much his mental health issues factor into the plot. >> concern that a mentally ill person might have been led into something by a government agency that maybe a person who did not suffer from these issues would not have been led into. >> and for as many mental issues that he had, he said the good news is that it appears that he did respond well to medication and treatment. so he said it's unfortunate his client is now facing federal charges. abc7 news. the highway patrol is investigating a fatal accident that tied up traffic for several hours in the east bay. it happened on westbound i-80 in richmond near carlson boulevard just after 1:00 p.m. yesterday. the chp said a s.u.v. hit the center divide and rolled several times. a 23-year-old hayward man behind the wheel was killed. his 28-year-old passenger was

injured. traffic, you can see there, backed up for miles as officers investigated the accident. all lanes were reopened after about three hours. the woman killed on her bike in front of at&t park yesterday morning has been identified by san francisco police. 48-year-old diane sullivan of san francisco was involved in a collision with a cement truck traveling west on king street across from the ballpark. police say the truck driver is cooperating with the investigation. it does not appear drugs or alcohol were involved. berkeley police are dealing with an alarming spike in the number of reyes reported last year. 39 sexual assaults reported in 2012, the most in the last five years. it's also a 95% increase over 2011 when 20 cases were reported. police say the majority of the attacks involve students at u.c. berkeley, not on campus, but at parties in the surrounding

neighborhoods where an estimated 35,000 students live. >> definitely disturbing that i personally cannot feel safe in this community all the time. and that is a very realistic threat. >> historically, of course, these type of things are underreported so we may be it into a little bit of that previously unreported issue. and police are saying a campus programming encouraging friends of victims to report attacks could be one cause for the increased number of cases. there's a demand for peace in oakland. yesterday several groups, including the art of living foundation, gathered to discuss solutions to violence that can also help the community heel. abc7 news reporter has the story. >> at champ nation boxes gym in east oakland, the fists were flying. this am fur boxes event drew a large crowd but the gym's owner just wants one thing, to make

it's much nor complicated than it looked. scientists spent several days trying to figure out how to drill the perfect hole. they accomplished it on friday. the hole 2 1/2 inches deep. they are transferring the prouder to curiosity's laboratory. they will discover the powder's chemical makeup in an attempt to determine what kind of life existed on marchs and is there water there. 2012 was a good years for nintners in california. last year was the largest crop on record. average grape sold for 25% more than 2511. premium grapes grown in napa fetch more than $3,500.00 a ton. it means wine growers saw $515 million more in 2012 than 2011. however, analysts believe this year's crop won't be nearly as strong. but whatever they come up with, we will be willing to test it

our friends in the east bay from livermore, 31. 35 in concord and just as cool as we were yesterday in san jose at 36. 34 in los gatos. 34 on the coast, though around half moon bay and 32 in watsonville. this morning the big changes come in the north bay as much as 11 degrees colder in napa. and by the delta. elsewhere, san francisco and oakland, certainly cooler. we are looking at some changes tonight as our winds pick up. we will get into an offshore flow. so perhaps some of these colder readings will be offset and we will see some warmer temperatures tonight. but overall we are going to stick with these chilly evenings and the warmer, sunnier days. cold temperatures and the frost as you head on out this morning and we will look for a sunny day today with the winds increasing. the hills in the north and east bay by the late afternoon. the evening hours. and that will allow for some pretty gusty winds but we are looking at our warming trend continuing on track right through the middle of the week.

cold, high pressure and the northerly flow continues today and that's allowing for the cold start. the pressure sits offshore. as it continues to move closer to california, building eastward we will get into a little bit of warming. we are talking about numbers through the 60s climbing right to perhaps 70 around monterey, san benito county, right on through thursday. and by friday looks like our ridge begins to break down. still looking dry. 58 in fresno. look for 35 this afternoon in tahoe. so not much warming there starting out at about 7 this morning. 63 in sacramento. so east of us is warming up a little bit. 58, a couple degrees warmer today in san francisco with 61 in santa rosa. look for low 60s south end of the bay. 58 livermore. by the monterey bay we are looking at 60 santa cruz, 61 salinas. pebble beach the other sunny and beautiful afternoon, starting out upper 30s to low 40s and by the afternoon mid-and upper

miranda, abc7 news. >> a gun show continues today in vallejo after it drew huge crowds yesterday. organizers say the turnout was a lot bigger than anticipated but not surprising. the operators of this show say new legislation being pushed by gun control advocates only drives customers to stock up on weapons and ammunition that might not be available in the future. it is the first of four gun shows scheduled in vallejo over the next six months. in about 30 minutes a report commissioned by the family of late penn state head coach joe paterno is due to be released. his widow, sue paterno, said he was a moral, disciplined man, who never twisted the truth. today's report is the family's response to the investigation by former fbi director loui frie that accused paterno of covering up the sex abuse scandal that involved his former assistant coach jerry sandusky. that led to his firing in 2011.

sandusky was sentenced to prison after being convicted of 45 counts of sex abuse. katie couric will have an interview with sue paterno tomorrow on "katie" only at abc7. san francisco taxpayers could end upholding the bag for millions of dollars to put on america's cup six months from now. according to "the chronicle," fundraising efforts to cover an estimated $34 million in police, cleanup and transportation costs are falling far short. so far just $14 million have been raised, which could saddle taxpayers with paying the remaining $20 million. the event was originally supposed to bring in $300 million to the city. butt it has been down sized from 12 international teams to just three, and that has dried up corporate sponsorship of the event. today marks the beginning of the year of the snake.

lake tahoe, but this year is different. the center has more orphan black bear cubs than ever before. the good news is they are all healthy and will be returned to the wild. abc7 news anchor dan ashley gives as you look at what it takes to give a baby bear a second chance at life. >> you may remember these little guys. we showed them to you last summer when they were confiscated in nevada county, taken from a man who was trying to sell them. this little cub was found near alpine med dose ski resort. her mother was illegally killed by hunters using dogs. >> she was hungry, she was cold. she had been hit by a car at that time and was slightly limping. >> in the wild these bear cubs would die without their mothers. instead they ended up here at lake tahoe wildlife care. this is also cheryl's home. they take care of all kinds of animals but right now they have their hands full with bears. the center gets an average of four cubs a year, but on this day there are ten.

seven are high better nateing, snug he would in these building in the backyard. live cameras show them snoozing peacefully. >> which is good. >> the other cubs are very much awake in this cage and it's almost feeding time. first cheryl cleans up the floor. the cubs peak down from the platform at the top of the cage. >> bears are more afraid of us than we are of him. they have a fear of humans naturally. we want to keep that fear. >> the cubs stay up on the flat form as long as people are around. >> they came in at 11, 12 and 20 pounds. if we put them into hibernation it probably would have killed them because they are not big enough. >> now they are twice that size but still too small to high better nate. this is the only certified bear rehabilitation facility in california. that requires a lot of no-how and cages lined with chain link because bears are good climbers. >> they use both their teeth and their claws. they are just -- they are remarkable. >> cubs are brought here from

>> cloud cover, no fog to speak of, and temperatures with the lower dewpoints dropping this morning. our north bay valleys, 28 degrees in napa. 32 for you in livermore, as well as novato and mid-40s san francisco, the warm spot. look at the coast. 44 half moon bay. san jose you were 35 yesterday, 36 this morning. still a couple of hours to drop even more so. 32 in watsonville with gilroy at 31 degrees. so with those calm winds certainly 13 degrees colder in novato with 2 degrees warmer in fremont. the east ba i and south bay about the same. but colder conditions from livermore towards fairfield this morning. so as you head on out, bundle up. it's certainly chilly with that patchy frost north and east bay. sunny today. the winds picking up in our north and east bay hills throughout the evening tonight and then by tomorrow they begin to subside. if you are taking that bike ride this afternoon, it should be fine. a light northeast wind.

plenty of sunshine. a gradual warming trend. starting out slow to begin the week, but by, say, tuesday and wednesday,we will certainly see the numbers bump up significantly. so still caught in this dry, northerly flow with high pressure offshore. as it continues to build on in to the eastern pacific, then we will get our warming day to take. and today even though we are starting out so cold, we are looking at temperatures about two degrees warmer than yesterday. but the week ahead featuring the high, blocking any storm systems from moving into the bay area and also allowing for the warming trend under the ridge as it sinks and warms the air. temperatures today still in the warming up from chico to. sacramento in the low 60s with los angeles out of the 50s. it was certainly chilly yesterday. back home still 50s on the coast with 57 half moon bay, but low 60s from napa to san jose.
