[ laughter ] it's a big night here on hollywood boulevard. the espy awards are happening right across the street from us. i was thinking about it today. you know, the nice thing about an award show where every presenter is a totally ripped athlete is that no one's going to walk up there and try to slap them. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] speaking of awards, i am also going to honor some very deserving and talented individuals tonight. acting is one of those jobs that seems very, very glamorous. sometimes it is. but in reality, it can also be very tough. when i first started out, i had to supplement my income by being a substitute teacher, a yoga instructor, a hostess at a restaurant. so it meant a lot to me the

first time that i qualified for that sweet screen actors guild health insurance. [ laughter ] yes, really. now i'm a proud member of the screen actors guild, or s.a.g. as we say in the biz, but in order to get s.a.g. health care, you have to make a certain amount of money each year, which is not always easy to do. so we invited a few fellow real actors to the show tonight who are very close to qualifying for coverage. and they will get there if they deliver just one more line of dialogue on tv. for instance! this is madeline macusky, ladies and gentlemen. [ cheers and applause ] really great. it's also, it's also a little bit scary that they even have to do this in the first place.

are we going to have to redo all of our laws now? because if that's the case, i'd love to lock down the whole women have the right to vote thing, okay? [ cheers and applause ] i mean, honestly, how messed up is it that republicans believe that marriage is a decision made between a woman and a man, but a woman's abortion is a decision made between 60 dudes on capitol hill? [ cheers and applause ] so now the bill moves to the senate, where it's unclear how lawmakers will vote. it's also unclear if the earth will exist a year from now. i'm serious, google it. actually, don't google it, because apparently that's not the cool way to look stuff up anymore. according to a senior vice president at google, about 40% of young people prefer using tiktok and instagram when they're searching for information. [ laughter ] in fact, the most common tiktok google search is "what the [ bleep ] is google?" [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] this is kind of alarming, right? this is very alarming.

well, years ago -- well, my goal was to always play pro football, like your husband. >> kerry: yes. >> i know football is big in your family. that was my goal, i never made it. but that was my ticket out to buy my parents their first home. we never lived at home growing up, it was apartments and trailer parks. so when we were evicted off the island in honolulu, hawaii, out of our apartment, i told myself then when i was 14, i need to buy my mom a house. so, bought them a house. and then i bought my parents a house, their first house, when i made a little bit of money. >> kerry: little bit. because even though you didn't make the nfl, you pushed out okay. >> i turned out all right. bought them their first house, they got a divorce, bought my mom a second house after the divorce. and then we moved to the west coast -- >> kerry: you had to buy another house. >> yeah. by the way, the other ones are sold. >> kerry: you're not racking up houses? >> no, no, no. my mom is so -- she's literally my biggest fan. she is the best grammy to our daughters, all three. a room dedicated to you in every >> kerry: i heard that she has

[ applause ] is that incredible? how did you get this job? >> okay, so, discovery called and they were interested in me hosting shark week, and it was all part of the promotion for "superpets." >> kerry: ah. >> warner brothers, discovery. and i kept saying no because i couldn't figure out what the reason -- i didn't want to do it -- >> kerry: you didn't want to intimidate the sharks, i know. >> didn't want to intimidate the sharks for one. i thought, what if we went to hawaii. and sharks are honored and revered -- i'm half black and half samoan. on my polynesian side, they're respected and honored. we call them amakua, which is our gods. so i said, what if we connected culture to shark week? and they said yes. i said yes. we brought everybody to hawaii, it was beautiful. >> kerry: i love that.

wow, that's beautiful. thank you. that's incredible. have you ever had a shark encounter? >> i did. i had an encounter one time. i was swimming off the coast in australia, and i had a run-in with a great white. yeah, it was crazy. >> kerry: what did you do? >> well, they say either stay still or if they start to attack, you should -- you hear that crazy story about punching sharks? >> kerry: yeah. >> in the nose or wherever you can or in the eye. that's what i started to do. that was the only thing i knew how to do was just -- you know, just try and punch. that's what you do. >> kerry: i don't -- i'm -- >> do everything you can to get away when you feel like they're going to -- >> kerry: it's incredible. >> attack you, yes. the second part is i woke up from that dream. and i was like, oh, wait a second -- oh. >> in amazing ways. he was going to get euthanized. >> kerry: ugh. >> and so my wife took my daughters to this arts and crafts place. they left the arts and crafts place -- this is a true story. they smelled what they thought was doughnuts. and this was over the weekend. so my little daughters were like, let's follow our noses! so, they started walking down a sidewalk to where they thought it was, strip mall. no doughnut place, no sweets, nothing. they're like, wow, this is really weird. they look, and there is this adoption agency, wag more, in front of them. so they walk in and lauren says, well, we're here. do you have any puppies? they bring out turbo. i go meet turbo a few hours later. i'm speaking to the woman. all wonderful staff. they were telling us not only was he going to get euthanized -- not there, but at another place, and they rescued him. a family came the day before to get turbo, fell in love, said we'll take him.

went to the back to get the papers came out, the family left. without turbo. what happened? so he was just left alone again. >> kerry: he was meant to be yours. >> he was meant to be, so we have turbo now. co-owners of the xfl. >> yes. >> kerry: you've partnered with the nfl league, and that means means a lot to me and my family. >> of course. >> kerry: tell me a little bit about what you've got cooking with the xfl and the nfl. >> teh xfl is our spring league which we acquired a few years ago. we wanted to take our time, do it right. this is the third it ration of xfl, so we started a collaboration with the nfl. the nfl alumni academy is great, by the way. basically it goes like this. the nfl has an alumni academy that if you don't roster throughout the nfl season, you automatically get a contract to go to the xfl. >> kerry: wow. >> jae, to play that spring. so those players who didn't roster in the nfl will come to us, xfl. we'll have a full spring season with a championship game at the end. the nfl coaches will be able to evaluate, watch game play. then if they're ready, they'll go on to the nfl in the fall. so yeah, it was very, very special. [ cheers and applause ] very cool, very cool. >> kerry: it must mean so much

to you as somebody who was in that same exact position. >> it does. i -- my goal and my dream was to play pro football. i went to university of miami, played with some great players, great teams. thank you very much. but my goal was to make it in the nfl. and i like to say that there are 53 men on an nfl roster, as you know. i was always number 54. i was that guy that the coaches said, "d.j., you're good but you're not good enough." and unfortunately, this is where the dream ends. so that, being told you're not good enough for something i've worked so hard for -- like your husband, right? for years, decades. a decade. and being told, you're not going enough, this is where it ends -- the chip that put on my shoulder and the fire and the drive has led me to here today. so i like to tell people who, when they ask about the xfl, what the culture of the xfl is, they're all number 54. they're all that player who said, you're good but you're not good enough.

and the player's response is one of two things happens. either, they go, okay, i'll move on. or, actually you're wrong, watch me. >> kerry: so dany, you guys were at the espys. she's made history as the first woman to own a league. not a team, a league. >> a league, yes.
