battling some spots as another storm system heads our way. thank you for joining us. today certainly has been a day of weather extremes in the bay area so let's get to abc 7 news anchor liz kreutz with a look. >> wild weather sunday around the bay area highlighted by lots of hail. around 10:00 this morning ice pepper to windshields and homes in san ramon. decks were sprinkled with small pieces of ice. the hail quickly melted into puddles. early this morning streets, cars and streets turned ic. this is how it looked new your clairemont avenue and grizzly point. highway 24 was slick. hail made it risky for drivers on the roads. we saw lightning in san francisco. this is from highway 101 where there was also flooding overnight. >> let's take a live look outside. you can see a lul in

storm. spencer christian says there is another storm rolling into the bay. >> will it looks like a lull for the most of the area the north bay is about to get some showers. you can see the moisture having moved on in parts of the north bay. what is more impressive is the line of showers that will be swinging through shortly. this storm is a level 1 one tonight and tomorrow. we will have periods of rain. some snow in the higher peaks and a slight chance of thunder. by 9:00 tonight, maybe later we will see the next wave of widespread and steady rain pushing on shore. it will have a few brief downpours. get a break until the beginning of the morning commute. this storm even though it is not well structured in nature is going to be with us through the day tomorrow.

i will have all the details in my seven day forecast. >> we are getting reports of trees toppling across the bay area due to saturated soil with one falling and killing a woman. it happened while she was on a group hike in rancho -- in cupertino. j.r. stone is there with what happened and lots of questions still to be answered. >> that is certainly the case. and if the last hour we have learned the parent who died here was the mother of the child in a local boy scout troop. that troop had a planned hike and she was out there when the tree fell and killed her. when i arrived on scene, there were hugs that family was together. there were 20 or 30 individuals. they told me they are still trying to process this. the park is still open but the trail where this happened is closed.

it actually happened around three miles from where i am standing. authorities tell me they received a call at 10: one this morning that a tree had fallen on a female hiker. she was the only one hit paired officials tell me the large tree took down a cluster of trees in the area. the group tried hard to get the tree off of her but were unsuccessful. fire crews tried to save her when they arrived but were also unsuccessful. we spoke with hikers and officials a wire logo. >> it is shocking. i have been hiking this for 20 years with my son. this park is really awesome. they are constantly trimming the trees. constantly taking care of it. i feel really bad that happened and for her family. >> during the winter storms we know the trails have been affected. exercise caution when you are on the trail. try to travel in groups and always have your cell phone.

talking about the recommendation of hiking with a group. keep in mind the woman who this happened to was with a group but the tree sadly still hit her. you can see the hikers out here this evening. this is a very popular park. a number of people were asking me was it raining outside, was she close to the group or far off. those are questions officials could not answer for us tonight. her name has not yet been released pending notification of kin. reporting live in the south bay. >> we appreciate you staying on top of the story. living into the north bay where both lanes of highway 29 in santa alina are back open. they were shut down at 1:00 this afternoon after a large oak tree fell across the roadway just south of zinfandel lane. to the developing news, our storms walloped tahoe with snow leading to a travel warning.

these caltrans cameras show us why. interstate 80 was closed this morning and chains are required on highway 50. the chp warns drivers could be stuck for hours and roads could easily shutdown. there's also a danger from backcountry avalanches at all elevations. suzanne phan takes a look at the impact of all that snow. >> this stuff is light and dry. this is not like heavy snow pack. snow to be thankful for. he lives in myers in south lake tahoe. >> i live in the snow capital of the united states. great for this cr, the ski resorts and the snowpack but there is also a lot of danger in the mountains. >> the winds we are experiencing, the avalanche danger is upwards of high to extreme. >> at heavenly mountain resort -- >> it has been busy this weekend. > crews are working on avalanche control. part of highway 50 has been

closed off and on because of that. >> when i was at the top of the mound this morning, i could barely see where i was going. >> as caltrans works to clear the roads -- >> we are out there clearing the snow as quickly as possible but it is building up. ski resorts have their hands full dealing with the fresh powder. >> we have had almost eight feet in the last weekend or at 40 feet for the season. there is more in the forecast. >> expect records to be broken in the next couple of days. >> we had a big winter in 1617 but i think we are going to surpass that ted >> we could be reaching record snowpack by the end of the week. >> this has been one of the most consistent snowpacks we have seen in 30 years. >> experts say don't rush to get to the resorts until things clear out. >> we have plenty of snow. we are going to extend the season. don't worry. >>

the belly of a lot of people to say i am a holder of this sea. i want to under judy and the work of many people who really put their lives at risk for our community and we will press on. >> the cause of human's death has not been released. moving to the east bay were contra costa fire officials say an engine is out of service and a ambulance had to be towed after a hit-and-run accident. happened before to: 30 this morning on highway 224. both emergency vehicles were responding to two separate accidents when they were hurt. the driver then left the scene. there is no word on any suspect. none of the firefighters paramedics were injured. a lithium scooter battery is to blame for sparking a fire this afternoon at an apartment in san francisco. that is the initial findings by investigators. you can see the scorched battery at the scene on polk street near

valeo. emergency crews took one person to the hospital for serious burns to a house fire posed serious challenges for crews in san francisco. flames go to the home on 40th onfire crews said they also hado deal with the danger of a downed power line in front of the home. people living nearby were told to stay inside until the fire was out and the live wire -- the livewire was deenergized. the wires that you see around our area, we have to gather firefighters to the roof. if we have somebody trapped in the house we have to get the gas is out of the building by cutting a hole in the roof. it is what we train for. getting our aerial letters around wires because we cannot stop working until that is safe >> >>. 70 firefighters responded to the scene. flames spread to a second building causing some minor damage. one person now needs a new place to stay. no one was hurt.

>> developing news in the san bernardino mountains. 500 personnel are working to strand -- working to help stranded communities affected by the snowfall. today the sheriff's department shared these photos just riveting food and supplies. caltrans says they are making progress in clearing highways of snow. the community of running springs has received 150 inches of snow in the past week. imagine trying to clean up after that.

between now and 9:30. some isolated or brief downpours. it will sweep through during the overnight hours. 5:30 tomorrow morning another wave will start to swing through bringing rain and snow to the higher elevations. that continues into monday night and early tuwe expect rainfall r most of the bay area by 11:00 tomorrow night to be under 2/10 of an inch. you see tonight flows will range from mid to upper 30's in the inland areas and upper 30's to 40 near the coast and bay. highs tomorrow not very high at all. 50, 51 on the coast. 52 to 54 everywhere else. in this year there is still a winter winning in effect until 4:00 tomorrow. additional cumulation will amount to a foot to maybe 18 inches. here is the accuweather 7 day forecast. two more days of level 1 storm impact every.

one of earth's most remarkable ecosystems are its wetlands. these waterlogged wilds are considered the most biologically diverse of all environments, providing a home for a vast array of water and land creatures and used as a popular stopping point for birds in migration. whether bogs, marshes, swamps, or estuaries, wetlands come in all shapes and sizes, just like the amazing animals that call these habitats home. the lush landscapes of the wetlands boast a bevy of activity. it's morning, and already these animals are up and running. a couple coot chicks are testing the waters before straying too far from the nest. these beavers have decided on a swim around the riverbanks. no need to rush this early in

the morning. some just can't get enough of their wonderfully wet morning in the wild. how about a bit of splashing to get mom in the fun... ...or some friendly water wrestling. these jacana chicks prefer aiz g a good breakfast. when they've grown a bit more, they'll be able to copy their parents' ballet-like balancing act using lily pads to dance across the water. these ducklings prefer to keep their feet under the water for some pond-side paddling races. higher up off the water, some ibis chicks are eagerly awaiting their morning meal from mom.
