on, many of them were expected teams to advance. >> you know, i have to admit i haven't watched one men's basketball game all season, but i love march madness once this comes around, i've been pressuring danny to start a pool. oh. at abc. we'll see if he does it. we'll have much more on march madness coming up a little bit later, but we do want to begin this morning with the deadly violence that broke out amid weekend celebrations in jacksonville beach, florida. people were running for their lives when police say gunfire erupted in the city's beachfront bar district. >> one person was killed and two others are in critical condition. police are working through the night trying to piece together what happened. so far, there have been no arrests and no word on a possible motive. authorities also have not released any information about the victims. the area where the shooting happened is locked down overnight. >> also from florida. the first evacuation flight carrying americans out of haiti has arrived in miami. more than 30 u.s. citizens were on board fleeing the gang related chaos that has gripped haiti for weeks now. the violence has closed the

airport in haiti's capital, forcing the us government flight to leave from a city more than 120 miles away. people on board had to make their own way to that airport. they will be reimbursing the government. >> there is a new arrest this morning linked to the spiraling crisis at the border. a suspected terrorist from lebanon is accused of trying to illegally enter the country from the southern border. there's word of a possible bomb plot and ties to hezbollah. abc's perry russom has more. >> this morning, abc news has confirmed a lebanese man apprehended by us border patrol has acknowledged being a member of hezbollah. considered one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world. >> we don't know for sure, what level of threat this individual may pose. there may be mental health concerns at at issue here. documents show the man tried to cross into texas from mexico march 9th, telling border authorities he was heading to new york, where he hoped to, quote, make a bomb, according to internal documents, the 22 year

old was slated for deportation, but it was unclear where to these types of unauthorized migrants are detained by federal authorities, often referred for further investigation or even prosecution. if warranted. and that whole process can take time . >> texas governor greg abbott blamed president biden's policies, calling them a magnet for this type of terror. what do you against? biden has defended his immigration policy, blaming house republicans for killing a bipartisan security deal. fbi director christopher wray just last week warned of dangerous people crossing the border. there is a particular network, that has where some of the overseas facilitators of the smuggling network have isis ties that we're very concerned about. large cities far from the border continue to struggle with the migrant influx. city officials in chicago this weekend began evicting some migrants from shelters after imposing a 60 day maximum stay policy. new york

and denver have also imposed new limits at migrant shelters, citing strained resources. former president trump is defending his latest comments on the crisis, where he said some migrants who come to the u.s. are not people but animals. >> why do you use words like vermin and poisoning of the blood? >> the press, as you know, immediately reacts to that by saying, well, that's the kind of language that hitler and mussolini used because our country is being poisoned. >> trump saying he uses the rhetoric to stir debate. >> it also gets people thinking about very important issues that if you don't use certain rhetoric, if you don't use certain words that maybe are not very nice words, nothing will happen that did steer debate on capitol hill. >> the border issue is complicating talks to avoid another government shutdown. with a deadline looming this friday, disagreements over spending on security have reportedly stalled negotiations. perry russom abc news, washington. >> all right, perry, thank you for that. former president trump's allies are coming to his defense after he said there will

and the weight loss revolution tonight on abc. >> back now with a really, really bad parking job at a port near istanbul, turkey. look at this. that massive container ship knocked over three cranes that would have been used to unload it. the ship is more than 1200ft long. thankfully there were no injuries due to the mishap, but really, just a big mess to clean up there. >> a cyclist attacked by a cougar is talking about those terrifying moments in the mountains east of seattle. she says her friends are really the main reason that she's still here to tell her story. hannah knowles from our station in seattle has more. >> i felt something to my right. i looked to my right and i saw a face of a cougar, and the next flash, i was all the way on the other side of the road, sitting side by side with two of her heroes, carrie holds on to the women who never let go. they

fought that cougar, and for me, they did this for me and, you know, they're they're my heroes. >> a group of five strong and courageous women, avid cyclists who ride hundreds of miles every week. but on february 17th, just 19 miles into their journey, the unexpected happened. >> as i turned around, carrie was off to the side on the trail with the cougar on top of her, and i just started beating it with the rock over and over and over. >> after the group of women were able to trap the animal under one of their bicycles, carrie managed to get away, rushed into a nine hour surgery the next morning, a photo collage captures her journey to healing. >> every day has been getting better. you know. every day is a day i'm alive and i get to see a beautiful sunny day like this. >> carrie tells me thankful doesn't begin to even describe the gratitude she has for her friends and family and the community. >> i can't even express to you i have no words holding close her

saint patrick's day looks like that party went most of the night. wow, he's still cleaning up. yeah i bet the cleanup is a big job too. there's a lot to look forward to. march madness is here and i pick my kansas jayhawks to win every single year. even though there are four seed. i think i might pick them again. >> i don't know, howard university's men's basketball. yes, my alma mater. yes. miac champs. yeah. >> miami did. my school did not make it. so congrats to you guys. i don't care. it's my favorite sporting event of the year. 68 teams competing to win the ncaa tournament in the men's bracket and our four regions number one overall seed, the defending champs, connecticut, uconn. they're playing here in new york. and we got purdue, houston, north carolina rounding out the other one seeds. and to the women's bracket. our number one overall squad is south carolina who's undefeated again two regular seasons in a row 32 and zero. then we got usc, texas and of course iowa and caitlin clark. >> yeah, well, obviously she made history just a few weeks

ago. we talked so much about it becoming division one's all time leading scorer, men or women's. but the only thing she has left to do is to win the big dance. last year, iowa lost to lsu in the title game, so we'll see if they can pull it off this year. and i just realized, danny, i know i've been pressuring you about putting together a bracket challenge. we got to do women's too. if we do men's we got to do women's double the money, right? >> yeah. >> we need to recruit her to howard university. >> i'm thinking she's going to the wnba all right. >> okay. now, the tony hasn't starred yet, but we had a lot of march madness or d'oeuvres during the weekend's conference tournaments. for example, nc state, they had 101 odds to make the big dance going into last weekend's acc tournament, and they punched their ticket by beating a one seed unc little end stage showdown. they get to make the dance, and you may remember saint peter's of jersey city with their undergrad population of 2000. well, they're back after they made the first elite eight for a 15 seed two years ago. and lastly, don't forget the duquesne dukes making their first tony since 77. lebron even posted about that. but i want to get to my favorite
