like, oh, maybe the freeway can drop away. so it's just crazy. >> now, at five, one of the most picturesque sections of california's coastline suddenly gives way. highway one, now closed indefinitely during a week, many families are on spring break. the effort to get the highway reopened and we are learning more about the couple who died in a small plane crash near tahoe over the weekend. >> their involvement in the tech industry here in the bay area. >> this is going to be a long road. it's a very complex operation. >> work is now underway to remove the wreckage at the baltimore bridge collapse site. as more help is about to arrive.

minutes and highway one to los gatos 21 minutes. so no delays, no major issues this morning, amanda. >> all right. thanks, gloria. this week, crews will be working to stabilize a crumbling portion of highway one that collapsed over the weekend. here is a look at the damage. you can see a big chunk of one lane fell down a cliff. if you've driven down highway one before, this is between carmel and big sur. it just south of the rocky creek bridge, which is about a mile from the famous bixby creek bridge, where thousands of tourists stopped to take photos. abc seven news reporter jared stone spoke with one person who drove through that area less than an hour before it collapsed. >> this video comes from highway one near the rocky creek bridge in monterey county. you can see a section of the southbound lane going into big sur is now missing. after it slid down the cliff saturday afternoon. no one was hurt, but caltrans immediately closed the highway, meaning no one in and no one out. >> like, oh my gosh, like, are we going to be stuck here for weeks? like, what is happening?

this was not planned. >> linda molinari was with her boyfriend saturday. they made a last minute decision to go have lunch in big sur, and ended up having to stay in their camper saturday night. they estimate that this slide happened just 30 minutes after they drove along this lane. >> so that's just crazy to even think about so many people are messaging me like, why don't you just go south and go around this road that goes over the hill, like, because one is closed south? also like that part slid away months ago, so there's literally no road that goes through the mountain to get over to 101 or anything. that's the only way caltrans says while they do monitor all of highway one, they hadn't been specifically eyeing this area. >> as for what's next, we'll try to immediately try and stabilize that outside edge and design a repair to make a structural fix at that location. caltrans will allow organized caravans of essential workers and residents to go through at 8 a.m. and 4

p.m. over the next few days. they're asking tourists to stay home. >> big sur is not the place to go right now. >> we are also encouraging people to stay away from the area. >> linda and her boyfriend were one of nearly 300 vehicles that made it out midday sunday, when the highway reopened from the first caltrans caravan. they took this video showing the long lines, then the damaged roadway. she's happy to be home, grateful they had their camper, but saddened to spend easter like they did. >> it was really hard when the firefighters said like, oh, you get to sleep here tonight. sorry, it's not going to open. like all of the normal, like big family gathering that happens that grandparents, you know, like it's easter tomorrow. what do you mean we can't go home like we can't go to the hole. missed the whole family celebration. so amazing to get home. but still that bittersweet. like you missed a holiday from just trying to go to lunch on a random day. >> j.r. stone abc seven news learning new details this

morning about the local entrepreneurs killed when their plane crashed near lake tahoe. >> and gloria, people who knew them say they had a huge impact on the tech industry. >> that's right, kumasi truckee police say that lauren and naomi pietruszka crashed as they were coming in for a landing on saturday night at the truckee airport. the couple was from israel and had homes in hillsborough and incline village. palo alto based upwest is one of the many companies that they had a hand in. we spoke with the venture capital firm's founder, gil ben-artzi, he says. liron and naomi never sought the limelight, but they had a huge impact on the businesses that they backed. >> there were quiet leaders. they weren't upfront and center. you won't read about them, you know, in business or investment publications. but if you talk to every single founder that they invested in, they would always say that they were the first call. >> gil says. the pair wanted to give back to the israeli tech world through investment and

philanthropy. he says they were mentors to many, generous with their time and their big hearts. >> they will truly inseparable as a couple and they're leaving behind an amazing legacy. and truly, we are all, devastated by this. >> and there's still so many questions about the crash that killed them. gil says lauren was an experienced pilot. the ntsb is investigating the crash, and they leave behind three grown sons. just so tragic. amanda. yes, certainly. >> thanks, gloria. >> new developments in baltimore. officials are hoping to open a temporary shipping channel today to allow critical vessels to begin moving again. a fourth crane is on the way to help clear the francis scott key bridge. work to remove the bridge started over the weekend, with crews cutting part of the bridge apart. one of the first pieces weighs 200 tons. the process is really slow. as you can imagine, crews have to clear the bridge one piece at a time and they have to check with engineers and divers between

each one. >> we have a ship that is nearly the size of the eiffel tower that is now stuck within the channel that has the key bridge sitting on top of it. >> divers are on standby to recover the bodies of four of the six people killed in the collapse. there is still no timeline for reopening the port to regular traffic. >> if you live on the peninsula, there is a big chance that a big change, i should say that could impact your access to health care. seton medical center coastside in moss beach. it's closing for renovations until december so that means the closest emergency services are at san mateo medical center's emergency room. and that's about 20 minutes away. so this closure will allow crews to repair damage from a tree that fell and mudslides during storms last year. a seton spokesperson says the building suffered significant water damage. >> happening today, more than half a million fast food workers in california are getting a big

pay raise. they will now earn at least $20 an hour. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in the east bay. lena. it's the highest minimum wage within the restaurant industry. >> amanda, good morning to you. and that's right. it is the highest. and for reference, it's a 25% increase from the state's previous $16 minimum wage, which just took effect on january 1st. this new law will impact more than half a million fast food workers in the golden state. it only affects fast food chains, with at least 60 locations nationwide, but some small business owners are feeling the pressure to compete by raising wages for their own employees, saying they'll have to raise prices to even more recognizable chains. like starbucks said they are planning on changing their pricing to offset this cost. san francisco state university professor of labor studies john logan says the minimum wage bump is needed. >> this is a start to improve

the wages and also improve the working conditions in the industry. also, legislation that may act as a model for other states that's going to impact us by an increase of $470,000 annually across those ten stores. >> it means that we have to raise prices, which we don't want to do. >> franchise owners like alex johnson, who owns a total of ten auntie anne's and cinnabon locations here in the bay area, are saying this will hit their bottom line hard. he says he may have to consider layoffs and closing some locations. carl's junior here behind me in livermore says they will also be impacted starting today. we are told that their team is also looking for innovative, innovative ways to overcome this new challenge. live in livermore. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you so much, lena, and it might be a little harder to get an uber or lyft today. drivers are planning a series of rallies they're calling. drivers

are no fools. they say they're noticing declining pay due to high company fees and sudden ride cancellations. drivers also want to fight against a shift toward autonomous vehicles. lyft responded to abc seven news, saying in part that it has a, quote, a new minimum earnings guarantee that drivers will always make at least 70% of the weekly rider fares after external fees end. quote. we reached out to uber and have yet not heard back yet. >> restaurant and cabaret asia sf. it was set to permanently close today, but it says it will host performances now through april. the business website says due to overwhelming demand, asia sf is adding shows during 13 nights this month. the venue opened in 1998 and it features transgender performers lip syncing. asia sf two owners say the business has been unpredictable since the pandemic, so they are choosing to retire. happening tomorrow, the city of oakland is set to meet with the a's to talk about

a lease extension at the coliseum. abc seven news has learned the city will offer to extend the team's lease for up to five years. the a's lease at the coliseum expires at the end of this season. its new stadium in las vegas won't be ready for another three years. the team is also exploring a temporary home in sacramento or in salt lake city. an offer sheet obtained by abc seven shows the city is no longer asking the a's to change their name when they leave oakland, or guarantee the city an mlb expansion team in the future. >> time now, 512. we're going outside a live look from our abc seven oakland airport camera, and we are dealing with clear skies this morning. we have a lot of sunshine on the way for the first day of the new month, and warm temperatures, 60s and 70s is going to feel nice later today. let's take a look at your weather wellness today. air quality is good. no problems there. tree pollen. unfortunately, there's little change to that. still high oak sycamore and pine are your main offenders and the uv index today

you could be part of a massive data breach. the company says the personal information of 73 million people has been posted to the dark web, and so that's 1 in 5 americans. the information includes everything from birth dates and passcodes to social security numbers. at&t says 90% of that information is from 2019 and earlier. so the company says, here's what it's doing. it's reaching out to people by email or a letter, resetting passcodes for current account holders, and working with cybersecurity experts. they are also launching an investigation. a political fight over the true

>> all right. thanks, gloria. we're about to get another snowpack update just days after the sierra was hit with back to back storms. >> tomorrow, scientists will take the official measurement at uc berkeley. snow lab says a little more than 18in fell through saturday night. statewide the snowpack is 107% of normal for this time of year, so pretty close to average. the sierra snowpack is a vital part of california's water supply. april is a critical time for water managers as they decide how much water will have for the year and if water restrictions might be needed this year. we are not expecting to see any restrictions. >> well, the storms that brought snow to the sierra over the weekend have left southern california with downed trees and flooding. abc news reporter alison kosik tells us the same system is now making its way across the country. >> heavy rain on highway 101, in southern california made for difficult travel conditions, this car spinning out moments later, a second car crashing into it. thankfully, no major

injuries were reported in long beach. the rain and gusty winds brought down this eucalyptus tree, collapsing on a home with a mother and her son inside, and neither was injured. back in january, hundreds of homes were damaged by flooding in this san diego neighborhood, and this weekend's heavy rains have residents worried. >> we're traumatized because of when we see this kind of rain. it feels like it's going to happen again in the san bernardino mountains. >> snow and high winds making for treacherous driving conditions. numerous vehicles stranded, drivers trying to dig out that same system is now moving east on monday, severe thunderstorms possible from texas to ohio, bringing potentially damaging wind gusts, large hail and possible tornadoes. >> our attention turns to the middle of the country as the system slides. a severe thunderstorm threat to the heartland. cities like dallas, tulsa and saint louis on alert

for a potential severe weather outbreak. it's going to be a rough start to the workweek for so many. >> later monday evening and into tuesday morning. flash flooding is possible amid heavy rains in parts of the midwest and ohio river valley. flood watch is in effect from indiana to west virginia. alison kosik, abc news , new york well, the heavy rain has closed beaches in los angeles for days now. >> health leaders are worried that all the water washed bad bacteria into the ocean. l.a. county's health department says intense storms like what they saw over the weekend, can wash tons of bacteria from city streets to the coast. and so now they are worried about people getting sick. just from being in the ocean waters right now. they hope to reopen the beaches on wednesday morning unless it rains again this morning. >> officials are rushing to open a temporary shipping route in baltimore as we reach one week since the deadly collapse of the francis scott key bridge, the port of baltimore has been shut down since, as crews work around

the clock to remove the bridge and gloria, officials are calling this a remarkably complex operation. >> good morning. amanda, more equipment is heading to the wreckage site as demolition crews are taking apart the francis scott key bridge, and officials say that six construction workers were killed after a ship hit the bridge, causing the collapse. four are still missing, presumably trapped in the steel underwater. a fourth navy crane is set to arrive today as crews work to clear the channel. salvage teams hoisted 200 tons of debris out of the river in a complex operation. it involves cutting and removing the mangled trusses. one section at a time. >> it's not just that you have to remove the wreckage. they could behave almost like a spring if they are not expertly managed. you also, of course, still have the ship there alongside the channel. measures are being taken to stop the stern of the ship from swinging into the channel. >> the captain of the port announced plans for a temporary
