>> good morning. good morning to you, drew. good morning, everyone at home. so we do have a crash that we are just learning about right now. so we want to give you the very latest on that. this is a three car crash on southbound 880 before tennyson road. and right now we're getting word that that crash just moved to the shoulder. this is in hayward. however there are some delays in that area. about 25mph is what we're hearing as far as the speeds there. so definitely expect delays. while they continue working to clear that crash completely. and looking live right now at our bay bridge toll plaza camera, the metering lights are on right now. it is starting to get a little congested. there but really not too bad for this time of the morning. traffic just starting to build there from the toll plaza to san francisco. it will take you about 11 minutes. kumasi. thank you gloria. >> this week, crews will begin to work to stabilize a crumbling portion of highway one that collapsed over the weekend. a huge chunk of one lane fell down a cliff. as you can see here, this is between carmel and big sur just south of the rocky creek bridge, and that's about a

mile from the famous bixby creek bridge, where thousands of people stopped to take photos. caltrans will be allowing organized caravans of essential workers and residents to go through at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. over the next few days, but tourists are being asked to stay home. >> we'll try to immediately try and stabilize that outside edge and design a repair to make a structural fix at that location. >> all state parks in big sur will be closed until further notice. for those who live in that part of monterey county, it's not a rare sight. the highway has been closed several times over the past five years because of slides, including last march when the highway was closed for months. crews even had to suspend repair work because of other slides and that cost millions in damages. today, fast food workers at several restaurant chains will get a big pay raise here in california, and many of those companies say they may need to raise prices to

afford it. >> abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live in livermore with those impacts. good morning. lena >> good morning amanda. today, many fast food workers across the state will start making $20 an hour. and for reference, that's a 25% increase from the state's previous minimum wage at $16 an hour, which just took effect on january 1st. this new law will impact more than half a million fast food workers here in the golden state. it only affects fast food chains with at least 60 locations nationwide, but some small business owners are feeling the pressure to compete by raising wages for their own employees, saying they'll have to raise prices to even more recognizable chains like starbucks said they are planning on changing their pricing to offset this cost. san francisco state university professor of labor studies john logan says the minimum wage bump is needed. >> this is a start to improve the wages and also improve the

working conditions in the industry. also, legislation that may act as a model for other states that's going to impact us by an increase of $470,000 annually across those ten stores. >> it means that we have to raise prices, which we don't want to do. >> franchise owners like alex johnson, who owns a total of ten auntie anne's and cinnabon locations here in the bay area, are saying this will hit their bottom line hard. he says he may have to consider layoffs and closing some locations. now, carl's junior right behind me here will also be impacted starting today. we are told their team is also looking for innovative ways to overcome this new challenge. live in livermore . lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena. well we are learning new details about the local entrepreneurs killed when their plane crashed near lake tahoe and gloria. people who knew them say they had a huge impact on the tech industry.

>> they do. kumasi truckee police say that lauren and naomi pietruszka crashed as they were coming in for a landing on saturday night at the truckee airport. the couple was from israel and had homes in hillsborough and incline village. palo alto, based upward, is one of many companies in hand in. we spoke with the venture capital firm's founder, gil ben-artzi, and he says that leon and naomi never sought the limelight, but they had a huge impact on the businesses that they backed. >> there were quiet leaders. they weren't upfront and center. you won't read about them, you know, in business or investment publication. but if you talk to every single founder that they invested in, they would always say that they were the first call. >> the pair wanted to give back to the israeli tech world through investments and philanthropy. >> he says they were mentors to many, generous with their time and their big hearts. >> they will truly inseparable

as a couple, and they're leaving behind an amazing legacy, and truly, we are all, devastated by this. >> and there are still so many questions about the crash that killed them. gil says leon was an experienced pilot, but the ntsb is investigating the crash and the couple leaves behind three grown sons just so tragic. >> amanda, thank you so much, gloria. and new developments in baltimore. officials are hoping to open a temporary shipping channel today to allow critical vessels to begin moving again. a fourth crane is on the way to help clear the francis scott key bridge. work to remove the bridge started over the weekend, with crews cutting part of the bridge apart. one of the first pieces weighed 200 tons. the process is really slow. crews have to clear the bridge one piece at a time and they have to check with engineers and divers between each one. we have a ship that is nearly the size of the eiffel tower that is now stuck within the channel that has the

key bridge sitting on top of it. divers are on standby to recover the bodies of four of the six people killed in the collapse. there is still no timeline for reopening the port to regular traffic. >> it may be a bit harder to get an uber or lyft today. drivers are planning a series of rallies they're calling. drivers are no fools. they say they are noticing declining pay due to high company fees and sudden ride cancellations. drivers also want to fight against the shift toward autonomy vehicles. lyft responded to abc seven news, saying in part that it has a quote, new a new minimum earnings guarantee that drivers will always make at least 70% of the weekly rider fares after external fees. end. quote. we did reach out to uber. we have not heard back. still to come, san francisco's lgbtq community, responding to backlash over the proclamation of transgender day of visibility. >> then a ski trip to remember

six. the foreign minister of cyprus says ships carrying hundreds of tons of aid are approaching gaza. the three ship convoy left saturday as concerns about people starving are growing. israel's military withdrew from gaza's largest hospital overnight after a two week operation. the idf has described the raid on the hospital as one of the most successful operations of the war. they say hamas militants were killed and weapons, along with intelligence documents, were taken from that site. the world health organization says several patients died and dozens of others were put at risk during the raid. the idf's top spokesperson denies those claims . happening tomorrow, the city of oakland is set to meet with the a's to talk about a lease extension at the coliseum, abc seven has learned. the city will offer to extend the team's lease for up to five years. the a's lease at the coliseum expires at the end of this season. its new stadium in vegas won't be ready for another three years. the

team is also exploring a temporary home in sacramento or salt lake city, and offer sheet obtained by abc. seven shows the city is no longer asking the a's to change their name when they leave oakland or guarantee the city an mlb expansion team in the future. >> with a total solar eclipse roughly a week away, an amateur astronomer from texas is gearing up for the big event. 105 year old laverne baker of fort worth is ready to see his 13th eclipse. kumasi is ready to see her second visor, and his late wife, marian would travel together and schedule their vacations around the eclipse. they witnessed their first solar eclipse together in 1963. so what's the key to this astronomer's longevity? >> not a puff of smoke, not a sip of liquor. not a drug of any kind. lots of chocolate milk and lots of good. >> and watching the eclipse clearly for the first time in his life, the astronomical event

center tomorrow. women's march madness continues tonight with a trip to the final four on the line. yesterday's game in portland was marred by controversy over the on court measurements. 13. line was six inches closer than the other in the game between texas and nc state. both coaches were made aware before the game and opted to play anyway. the court is going to be fixed before today's game. stanford's women's team played on the exact same court on friday, where it seems likely the court measurements were off stanford lost that game by ten. the giants are backtracking on a controversial decision to replace fans. walkway tiles near mccovey cove. cruz dug out the tiles during construction of the mission rock development. the san francisco chronicle reports. the team told people their tiles couldn't be salvaged and their messages would be shown on a digital kiosk instead. fans were outraged, saying they didn't even know their tributes to loved ones have been removed.

little bit more time this morning, amanda. >> all right. thanks, gloria. this morning, the workers serving up your fast food breakfast are making more money. minimum wage in california is now $20 an hour, which is a 25% increase from the state's minimum wage. that is nearly triple the current federal minimum wage. an abc seven news reporter, lena howland, joins us live in livermore with the impact this could have for everyone else, lena. >> amanda. while workers are celebrating this long awaited pay bump, including those here at this carl's. behind me here, many business owners worry that they may have to raise prices to pass this cost back on to the consumer. the state has doubled its minimum wage for most workers over the past decade, reaching $16 an hour back in january. today it jumps to $20 an hour. one concern over that time frame was if the increases would cause workers to lose their jobs as employers expenses increased. instead a data showed wages went up and employment didn't change.

michael reich, a labor economics professor at the university of california, berkeley, told the associated press, quote, i was surprised at how little or how difficult it was to find disemployment effects. if anything, we find positive employment effects. >> the bottom line is everyone is not going to be able to afford even the measured and carefully thought out price changes that we are going to be implementing >> carrie harper howie owns 21 mcdonald's and says she hopes she doesn't lose customers. mcdonald says there won't be a uniform price change in its menu because corporate owned and franchised locations will be making different modifications to their menu. now, there are some exceptions to this law, including bakeries and some of those smaller stores that you find inside of airports and also grocery stores live in livermore

and lena howland. abc seven news. >> thank you. lena. from downed trees, flooded roads complicated travel. a storm is not letting southern california escape winter just yet, and the san bernardino mountains, snow and high winds are making for treacherous driving conditions. several cars were stranded over the weekend, and now that same system is moving east. today. severe thunderstorms are possible from texas to ohio, bringing potentially damaging wind gusts, large hail, and possible tornadoes. flash flood watches are in effect from indiana to west virginia for tonight into tomorrow morning. >> we're about to get another snowpack update. just days after the sierra was hit with back to back storms. tomorrow, scientists will take the official measurement. uc berkeley's snow lab says a little more than 18in fell through saturday night. statewide the snowpack is 107% of normal for this time of year, so pretty close to average. the sierra snowpack is a vital part of california's water supply. by

april is a critical time for water managers as they decide how much water will have for the year and if water restrictions might be needed this year. we are not expecting to see any restrictions. >> the heavy rain has closed beaches in los angeles for days now. health leaders are worried that all the worried, all the water washed, bad bacteria into the ocean. l.a. county's health department says intense storms like what they saw over the weekend, can wash tons of bacteria from city streets to the coast. they are worried about people getting sick just from being in the ocean waters right now. they hope they can reopen the beaches by wednesday morning, but they won't do that if it rains again. >> new at six a dramatic rescue in the north bay, the sonoma county sheriff's office called to help southern marin fire last night. take a look. a man fell 50 to 60ft down a cliff near battery alexander, which is in the golden gate national recreation area. rescue crews were able to lift the man off the cliff and fly him back to

the trail. it's unclear if the man had any injuries. new at six an abc news exclusive with ftx founder sam bankman-fried and the bay area native was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week. now he's answering questions from abc news from prison in written responses provided bankman-fried said i never thought that what i was doing was illegal, but i tried to hold myself to a high standard and i certainly didn't meet that standard. he also said he does not believe he received a fair trial, writing a one sided media frenzy and the defense's inability to get in critical evidence infected the whole process. bankman-fried plans to appeal, appeal his conviction and you can hear more from him coming up on coming up at seven, i should say, on gma, if you live on the peninsula, there is a big change that could impact your access to health care. >> starting today. seton medical center coastside in moss beach. it's closing for renovations

until december, so that means that the closest emergency services are going to be at san mateo medical center's emergency room and that's about 20 minutes away. the closure will allow crews to repair damage from a tree that fell and from mudslides from storms last year, a seton spokesperson says the building had significant water damage and the only grocery store on treasure island is dealing with damage after thieves ransacked it for the third time this year. >> the owner of the island, cove market, says he heard the alarm early saturday morning and checked the security video. there. he saw three men drive up in a hummer. he says they broke the windows with crowbars and used cables to pull out the doors and security gate. the atm was also tied to a cable and hauled out of the store. >> is really, really frustrating to see this happen. i don't know what else to do. i had a scissor gate, i have bollards that was very costly to put up and i

damaged by fire just one night earlier. saturday's fire began around 2 a.m. two people were hurt and several others were forced from their homes. crews say when they arrived, they initially thought the flames spread from vehicles to the building. it took more than 100 firefighters to put out the flames, so initial reports told us that uh- vehicles on fire had spread to the buildings. >> the flames had spread up the back of the buildings. these are what we consider ordinary construction or wood frame buildings. these are older buildings. they catch on fire and spread very quickly. this fire uh- rapidly expanded from a first alarm to a third alarm. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> this morning, officials are rushing to open a temporary shipping route in baltimore as we reach a week since the deadly collapse of the francis scott key bridge, the port of baltimore has been shut down ever since, and crews are working around the clock to remove the bridge. and gloria, officials are calling this a

remarkably complex operation. >> they are kumasi more equipment is heading to the wreckage site as demolition crews are taking apart the francis scott key bridge. an official say that six construction workers were killed after a ship hit the bridge, causing that collapse. four are still missing, presumably trapped in the steel underwater. a fourth navy crane is set to arrive today as crews work to clear the channel. salvage teams hoisted 200 tons of debris out of the river in a complex operation. it involves cutting and removing the mangled trusses. one section at a time. >> it's not just that you have to remove the wreckage. they could behave almost like a spring if they are not expertly managed. you also, of course, still have the ship there alongside the channel. measures are being taken to stop the stern of the ship from swinging into the channel. >> the captain of the port announced plans for a temporary
