>> we will make it soak up the summer. >> what a sight in just five days, the moon is going to soak up the sun. >> pretty much all of it over a wide swath of north america. >> yes, the solar eclipse is almost upon us. and, danny, new is here with details on how we can all witness it. >> yeah, well, they're estimating 31 million people across 13 states will be able to check it out in totality, as they say. and here's the map of that path. so the eclipse is going to be passing southeastern texas around 12:30 p.m. central time. and then eventually we'll arrive in new england in the tip of maine around 430 eastern. so that's a lot of time as it gets its way across america. and of course, people will be experiencing this eclipse in different ways. and i want to tell you about one in particular. thanks to a new innovation coming out of harvard that will help folks in the blind and low vision community feel the awe of this eclipse with sound a little more.

>> there it is to take in the solar eclipse this monday. >> many folks with sight will grab their protective glasses. and thanks to the team at harvard university's light sound project, hundreds of people who are blind will also have a device to help them absorb this rare astronomical wonder. >> just because a person can't see doesn't mean they can't, do astronomy astronomer allison barilla first had this idea before the eclipse in 2017. >> this ability to transform data into sound. >> she teamed up with her colleague wanda diaz merced, who is a blind astronomer, to create a device that could use a light sensor to take in light and then convert that data into sound. >> wanda. >> really, she uses this for her research and this is how she she thinks about data. well after successfully using a prototype in 2017, allison secured grant funding to improve the light sound device for this year's eclipse.

>> now, when it interprets the light from the eclipse, it will use various instruments to connote the different phases. for example, when the light is at its brightest, the device will play a flute because it's kind of a bright, airy, instrument. once the team got hundreds of requests for 2024, they hosted workshops all over the country to enlist volunteers to help them build enough devices. >> we were trying to build 750, but we actually ended up building 900. >> we have reached totality here now. >> light sound devices have been sent to libraries, museums, schools for the blind, and even individuals in their backyard already to turn the sun into a symphony. >> i'm really happy and excited that we developed a tool that that can, give access to a group of people that i think is sometimes left out. >> for the record, once the sky goes into total darkness, the device will only play a light clicking sound so its users can hear the people around them and experience it with their community. now of course, a lot
