live the race for san francisco mayor. expected to get more crowded today. now at five, the longtime city supervisor, who says he wants to get the city back on track and before the a's settle in vegas, will be temporarily calling sacramento home. >> we're hearing from fans upset over this latest development. >> it is opening day for the san francisco giants. we're live this morning at oracle park for a preview of what the park has in store for fans. >> first, though, how will the weather hold up for the game? a live look outside this morning. it is a chilly start to our

weekend and we are wearing reds and pinks today. yes indeed yes, that's fun. good morning. on this friday, april 5th, yes, we're going to start the check of our forecast with lisa. >> well we are so low there's nowhere we can go but up after this in terms of temperatures. so yesterday i think we bottomed out with the rain, the gusty winds, the very cold. and we are starting out cold and there is frost to talk of in our future. but this system really is heading out of town. we still have a level one headed for the hills later, literally later on this afternoon we'll see these clouds and showers develop, but right now it is parallel to the coast and we are looking at this level one system with a cold showers, gusty winds, mainly in the upper elevations later on this afternoon, but we will have more dry periods today than wet periods. still, the chance of a thunderstorm, but northerly winds are taking over and that's going to allow for a little bit more stability throughout the day. but still, that chance in the afternoon. 39 santa rosa, sonoma. so some of the coldest air we have seen in a really

long time here, anywhere from 4 to 7 degrees colder than yesterday as that cold air has settled in. so notice the dry periods through 7:00. and we've got the east bay here looking at a few showers. and then as we get into the 4 or 5:00 hour notice, mount diablo, mount hamilton could see a few showers. we're still in the upper 50s. it is cool. and then we get into our frost advisory early saturday. so we'll talk about that when and how the temperatures come up for the weekend and beyond in a few minutes. >> thank you lisa. now let's take a live look at sfo. if you are traveling today, just be prepared for weather delays. according to flightaware, there are already more than 20 delays at sfo this morning, and oakland and mineta san jose both have fewer than ten delays right now. now, yesterday was a different story. sfo saw almost 500 delays, averaging two hours and 15 minutes, many of those happening as we saw higher winds and a storm moving through. you can track the weather where you live anytime. with the abc seven

bay area app. you can find it in your devices app store and download it. >> happening now caltrans crews are racing to come up with a rebuilding plan after a portion of highway one washed out over the weekend. yesterday, they brought in dozens of concrete barriers. they'll soon be placed along the road to guide traffic going between carmel and big sur. convoy passengers. passengers escorting drivers remain on pause because of the rain. while the closure is inconvenient, caltrans says it could have been worse. >> i think we maybe caught a little stroke of luck and maybe a lot of luck in the sense that we still have one lane open. >> evacuation warnings remain in effect in and around big sur. the monterey county sheriff's office plans to lift the evacuation warning if the convoys resume tomorrow as planned. >> happening today, we're expecting another candidate to officially enter the race for san francisco mayor. man is at the live desk with what aaron peskin is saying about his decision. amanda.

>> yeah, kumasi. we've known for a while now that san francisco supervisor aaron peskin was preparing to enter the race for mayor and today, he's expected to make it official by filing the proper paperwork. peskin enters the race as one of the most progressive voices in san francisco. he's been a supervisor on and off for 24 years. he's currently board president. the job current mayor london breed held before she was elected mayor, peskin told the chronicle he's entering the race partly because of what he describes as a chaotic governing strategy by breed. he criticized breed for what he described as an inchoate approach to solving the city's most pressing problems. >> now, aaron peskin has long been a thorn in the side of mayors going back to willie brown, and he represents that 30 to 35% of the voters that backed chesa boudin for district attorney. he got recalled. he's also was opposed to the measures that breed put on the ballot about giving police more power and for drug screening for

welfare recipients. so he's on that 35 compared to the 65 that go the other way. it will be an interesting race. they have a voice. >> and that was abc7 news contributor phil matier once peskin files his paperwork, there will be five people running for mayor. here. they are in alphabetical order. current mayor london breed, mark farrell, daniel lurie, aaron peskin, and asha safai. peskin is expected to hold a public event about his candidacy tomorrow morning in chinatown. reggie, back to you. >> thank you. amanda. now to the race to represent santa clara and san mateo counties in congress. it is officially a tie between the runner up candidates. that means voters in november's general election will have three names to choose from former mayor sam liccardo, the front runner from the start, plus evan lowe and joe simitian both have 30,249 votes each. liccardo had more than 38,000. he shared his reaction on x, saying given the extraordinarily unlikely outcome, quote, it's a good time to buy a lottery

ticket in california. 16 the runner up say they're celebrating making it to the general election. >> what a roller coaster. i am so excited about the opportunity to go into the general election to reaffirm the importance of earning the trust of the voters of this congressional district. >> it's been a wild ride, a roller coaster, a cliffhanger, but you know, a win is a win is a win. we're in. and that's the exciting news. >> it appears neither candidate is focused on a recount come november. political experts say despite liccardo being the front runner, it is anyone's race. anger and sadness in the east bay for a's fans. the team making its breakup with oakland official announcing their new home, at least for now in west sacramento. the a's are set for three seasons at sutter health park before the plan moved to las vegas. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone spoke with fans who are frustrated that it had to end this way.

>> i'm sad they're leaving and i'm mad they leaving athletic fans and oakland natives trying to enjoy plank. >> oakland outraged after the oakland a's announced thursday that this will be their last season in oakland, and they will instead play baseball at this minor league ballpark in sacramento come next year. >> well, i'm extremely disappointed, actually, to hear that i've been following the a's since i was a young kid. >> the heart, mind, and soul of a's fans has been kicked to the curb by somebody in the form of john fisher that didn't care about their emotions and his empty comments about how sad he is to leave oakland. well draw your own conclusions. >> former athletics executive andy dolich, who also coauthored the book goodbye oakland, is referring to current a's owner john fisher, who on thursday talked about how excited he was about the interim deal in sacramento. dolich says that fisher is nothing like former

owner walter haas, who kept the team in oakland and helped them win a world series championship in 1989. >> this is my miniature the world series trophy from 1989. and just to show you the quality of the haas family, every single one of us in the organization got one of these. this talks about what was possible, what the haas tried to do and what they did, and what john fisher i don't think john's ever going to have one of these as the blame game, though, is strong, especially when it comes to what the city of oakland and alameda county leadership did or did not do this new mayor. >> i don't think she really know how to play the game when it comes to professional sports team. >> i love our mayor, but i think she has a lot to do. she didn't fight to keep the teams here. >> it sucks to see another team leave and it feels like our city is failing. >> the gut punch that this, gives to all of us. and i'm one

day here at the ballpark for opening day complete with an f 15 flyover and the home debut of six new players kicking off its 25th season, oracle park is now the first baseball field in the country to install spotlight lights. similar to an nba experience. they installed a total of 12 spotlights in the off season, which has the ability to black out the entire field and spotlight a specific player. for example, doing an entrance outside of that and a new, upgraded sound system. oracle park is now one of four stadiums across the country that will start offering free go ahead entry, similar to going through clear at the airport, you go to the ballpark app, you upload a selfie and then all you have to do is walk through. >> you don't have to take out your phone, you don't have to find your ticket. you and everyone in your group can just walk right in. >> but one of the biggest changes fans might notice the

voice of longtime announcer renel brooks-moon won't be calling games anymore after 24 years, the president and ceo of the giants told me they plan to honor her service by naming the p.a. booth after her, and said they would be rotating through a number of people to fill in, and there is no timeline for hiring her replacement. now, if you are headed out to the home opener today, remember gates open three hours before the game starts at 1035 this morning, fans are asked to be in their seats by 1245 for some pregame festivities and the first pitch is at 135 this afternoon. now, fans coming out today will also notice plenty more grab and go food options designed to help get fans back in their seats just a little bit faster. live in san francisco lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right. and we do have the forecast for today. the weather is somewhat cooperating. it's not going to be raining, but it

will be cold. how about 54 degrees? there is a slight chance of an isolated shower to start and then a breezy conditions to windy with temperatures. ninth inning, 56 degrees. so we have had wet opening day. so this is better and we are going to see warmer temperatures over the weekend. here is a look at all that active weather across the state. area of low pressure to the south and east of us. so we are on the back side of it and you can see the showers parallel to the san mateo coast, so we're not out of it yet. upper elevations could see the showers, the downpours and we're also looking at some of that snow around mount diablo here. and as we go through the next several hours, look what's going on here along the central coast. big sur, look at the mountains there, a lot of shower activity and rain along the central coast for the bay area. it's cold. 41 fremont. it is quiet right now. 42, in oakland with upper 30s in santa rosa. and temperatures continue to drop out there. so through today, looking at some showers and the possibility of

are being laid off. amanda, we're learning this coincides with the end of a major project. yeah. >> reggie, the layoffs come only weeks after multiple reports that cupertino based apple was ending its decade long project to build an electric car. state filings did not mention the project, but impacted employees included machine shop managers, hardware engineers and design engineers. in total, 614 apple team members are losing their jobs. they were notified at the end of last month, with the layoffs effective may 27th. this is the first mass layoff at apple since the pandemic, and they come at a difficult time for the world's second most valuable company. apple's quarterly revenue fell in the last three months of 2023, and apple is facing an antitrust lawsuit from the department of justice that threatens to upend its business. we reached out to apple for more information overnight, and we'll let you know when we hear back. kumasi >> thank you. amanda. elon musk

is back to giving out free blue check marks on his social media platform. formerly twitter. popular accounts with at least 2500 verified followers started to get the check marks, along with premium subscribers on wednesday. it comes almost a year after musk remove verification for most users and reserve them for paying subscribers only. it was one of the biggest changes that musk made after taking over san francisco based twitter heads up for people who are sharing passwords on disney plus, abc seven's parent company, disney is starting to crack down. in june, disney ceo bob iger says it will start in a limited number of countries in june, then expand to others in september. people caught using someone else's account will be prompted to sign up for their own speaking of disney, it's revealing new details about its $60 billion investment into parks, cruises and experiences over the next ten years. >> in an interview with cnn executive michael hundgen says there's a big upgrade coming to the magic kingdom in florida. it

those cold, snowy peaks, very gusty winds and a slight chance of a thunderstorm. it is 45. in san jose. they had a shower last hour. upper 30s. look at that. 37 calistoga and then a frost advisory for the upper elevations saturday morning. look at the breezy winds. this is right on through the afternoon. it is going to be another gusty raw day out there at least ten degrees below average. so our high resolution model here shows that we're at 8:00 and things are somewhat quiet. but you'll notice that those showers will pop up here and there. and then especially throughout the afternoon from the north bay. the east bay could see some of those heavy downpours and stopping this at 530. not done with the snow yet there. mount hamilton, so still a rather active day at home. not as active as yesterday. and in the mountains we're looking at our winter weather advisory through 11:00, and notice anywhere from a couple inches to a half a foot at incline still to come. so as for today, gusty winds along the coast, very chilly out there, mid 50s and looking at a few breaks of sun.

customers, we've learned that company's top executives received big pay raises last year, a filing with the securities and exchange commission shows. the utilities giant, ceo got a 20% pay bump. ceo patricia poppy made just shy of $17 million last year in her executive pay. five other executives listed in the filing got raises and several others made less than the utility made. made less. excuse me? the utility made $2.2 billion in profits last year. electric rates went up 20. in january, state regulators approved another increase last month. >> we're learning new details about the frightening mid-air incident on that alaska airlines flight, business filings show. boeing has paid the airline $160 million in compensation after the door plug blew out. alaska airlines says that boeing is paying out for financial damages incurred when all of its max nine planes were grounded. the

airline says more money is coming from boeing, the ntsb and department of justice are still investigating the door plug incident. as we head into a busy travel weekend, we're learning about an uptick in security breaches at airports across the country. abc news reporter lionel moise has a closer look at the issue this morning. >> a troubling new report about the number of people who breached airport security in the last year, including an incident from february when a woman at the nashville airport bypassed security sneaking past officers before boarding a flight to la. and last month, a man without a ticket was caught taking pictures of other passengers boarding passes at the salt lake city airport to board a flight. he was removed just before takeoff, a tsa spokesperson tells the washington post of at least 300 cases nationwide in the last year, where people have bypassed airport security, a huge increase from previous years. just 72 cases were reported in 2022, only 29 in

2019. some of the factors the spike in post-pandemic travel and mental illness. >> there's certainly some concern when you see security breaches. however, at the same time, there's no such thing as a perfect security system, a tsa spokesperson calling it a trend, saying the number of breaches is a larger number than we realized. >> the most common cases were passengers reentering secured areas through exit only lanes. other times, including that recent case in nashville, officials say people were just tired of waiting. >> is it something that the traveling public should be alarmed about? not, in my opinion, and certainly concerning about let's strengthen that vulnerability, but nothing to be concerned about this fly the skies continue to remain safe. >> airport officials say they're working to address this trend with ideas including new barriers and one way gates. lionel moise, abc news, new york. >> the diet trends reaching a younger demographic coming up at

>> well good morning everybody. happy friday. it's april 5th. >> some of you get to work from home today. put a blanket on this morning. hi, lisa. >> yes. of course, in the heat. we are going to see more sun today, but that will work to destabilize the atmosphere somewhat. not as much as yesterday, because northerly winds that more stable air is going to move on in later on today. you can see the showers running parallel to the coast as low pressure spins to the south and east of us, and we have snow on top of mount tam this morning, mount hamilton, but in and around the bay. just a few showers in san jose and that will be the order of the day. scattered showers, partly cloudy skies, cold start out there. upper 30s santa rosa and napa with 44. in hayward. we've got a frosty night tonight with a frost advisory in the upper elevations, so sleep in tomorrow. anywhere from 2 to 7 degrees colder this morning and as we go through the next several hours, this is about 8:00 and still in the 30s to low 40s. we've got partly cloudy skies, but then those showers pop up anywhere from 3:00 throughout the afternoon. but

away from san francisco. so it looks like the giants home opener will be dry. but cold and blustery out there. and then throughout the afternoon. still a few showers, but then things will settle down. we'll get into a frosty night and warmer days arrive and we're talking a significant warm up right. we're going to flip the script again. another 180. when you see the extended outlook, reggie. >> thanks so much lisa. the storm we saw yesterday brought snow to the santa cruz mountains. here's what it looked like on highway 35. the chp shared these photos on social media yesterday. the national weather service says the snow level reached 2600ft. quite something to see the stormy weather also brought rain, snow and hail to the east bay. people made their way up to mount diablo to see the unusual sight. in april there was heavy wind and hail that left some of those visitors stuck. one man said he made it to the summit before he turned around, and his car slid on the icy roads, and park rangers had to help him out. >> it was absolutely beautiful.

15 flyover and the home debut of six new players. first pitch is at 135 this afternoon, live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena. the bay area's other baseball team is leaving oakland to play in sacramento. >> looking forward to this being our home until we move on to our stadium in las vegas in 2028. >> the a's made it official yesterday announcing their new home in west sacramento. the a's are set for three seasons at sutter health park before the plan moved to las vegas. the city of oakland offered the a's a lease extension to stay in play at the coliseum a little longer. it didn't work out. so now the a's are packing up. so what about the employees at the coliseum? the team may be eliminating jobs after the a's move to sacramento. according to the chronicle, in a zoom meeting with the a's front office, employees were notified that a staff reduction is coming in november. the report says the

a's are partnering with the nba's sacramento kings and triple a rivercats, both owned by vivek ranadivé, which would create redundancy among workers, prompting the a's to eliminate jobs. so here's a look at how the a's stadium saga developed and what a story. in 2004, the a's first looked into building a new stadium in the coliseum's north parking lot. that didn't work out. a decade later, in 2014, the team renewed its lease to play at the coliseum for another decade. then in 2018, the a's announced a 34,000 seat stadium for howard terminal in oakland. that fell through, and in 2023, the a's reached their newest deal to play in vegas. >> so one big question now is what is next for the coliseum? abc seven news reporter ryan curry has a look at the possibilities. >> if you talk to a's fans, frustration is the first word that comes to mind. you would think that they would understand our fight to try and keep the a's in oakland and now they're

the middle of the street for driving away customers. now, one business owner says he is so fed up with this he is going on a hunger strike. abc seven news reporter luz pena spoke to the man who calls this his last resort. reporter ayat al-tawil says this is his last resort. >> but the suffering of trying to survive every month is way more than this. sometimes i don't sleep, sometimes i don't eat. >> he's planning to go on a 30 day hunger strike to protest the controversial center bike lane and the two parklets he lost after the bike lane was installed. >> they took mine away and put a meter. >> in february, iyad, along with two other valencia street business owners, filed claims against the city of san francisco, saying the presence of the bike lane was violating their rights violates not only our clients civil rights, but also the city's charter, which mandates that the city protect the economic welfare of its businesses. >> it's been eight months since
