countless fans to consider what they said felt like a second chance at love. now it's second thoughts instead. it's been a couple months since your wedding and you have news to share? >> i want to start by saying, we have received so much love and support from so many people who watch "the golden batch yore." i don't think we can tell you how many people told us it gave them so much hope. we want none of that to change for anybody. >> teresa and i have had a number of heart to heart-conversations, and we've looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth. and we've kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it's probably time for us to dissolve our marriage. >> juju: get a divorce? >> uh-huh. >> yeah. >> juju: three months after getting married? >> yes. >> juju: you could imagine what the reaction's going to be.

he lives about 45 minutes away. and i feel a strong need to be close to him. i also have granddaughters. so we look at these situations, and i think we just feel like it's best for the happiness of each of us to live apart. >> juju: what do you say to the nerdy love people like me who think, love will find a way? how do you give up after three months? >> i think maybe it's part of the fact that we are older. and we do have homes, and we do have children, and we do have grandchildren. and i'm not saying it's impossible that the love can't overcome that. but it did play a major role. >> juju: i can't help but notice you're still holding hands. >> yes. >> juju: did you fall out of love? >> no. >> no, uh-uh. >> no, i still love this person. >> yeah, i still love him. >> there's no doubt in my mind, i still am in love with her, i

other night was a lie in the. >> juju: gerry ultimately chose teresa. >> will you marry me? >> yes, yes! >> juju: but after the wedding, they say reality set in. after the newlyweds set out to build their new life together, throughout the process, you said you were 100% committed to making it work. in november, you told me you were thinking of moving to south carolina to be together. how did it fall apart? >> yeah, so that was the plan. we looked at homes in south carolina. we considered new jersey. we just looked at home after home, but we never got to the point where we made that decision. >> juju: i had a long-distance marriage for a year. did you consider a commuter marriage? >> you know what, maybe because we're older, you know, we wanted it immediately, to be together, so maybe that had something to do with it. maybe when you're young, you've got the time to be in a commuter

marriage. >> we didn't see it as an option. >> juju: the couple challenged with realities of intense public scrutiny. there were all sorts of reports about your dating history, your resume, your past. did any of that play into this? >> no, not for me. >> no. >> because gerry had already discussed that with me. he had explained it to me before the report was ever released. so we were good with that. that didn't play into it. >> juju: again, it happened so abruptly. there was no sense of, let's just pretend for a while? >> we didn't want to pretend to anybody. we wouldn't lie to anyone. >> 70 and 72. >> we can't do that. >> it's kind of a waste. >> can't do that. >> juju: they put up a united front on the red carpet recently, tape an episode of "family feud" together, gerry posting an instagram photo earlier this week of their blended families. they say the decision to divorce was one they came to together. how quickly did those conversations about separation

start happening? >> how quickly after the marriage? how recently? >> juju: how recently? >> fairly recent. >> three weeks, it started. >> and we had some really good conversations. probably the most honest and direct conversations we'd had. and it's like, the lightbulb went on that we were mind. we started talking about whether or not it was the right thing to do, to divorce or try and stay together. that's when our counseling came into play. >> there wasn't fighting, it was a gent conversation. >> juju: you saw a couples counsellor? >> we did. >> juju: how did that go? what did you learn? >> i think it was very useful. >> yeah. >> the conversations in counseling helped us decide more clearly and more confidently the direction we wanted to go. >> juju: there had been talk that you had a prenup. how did that play out? >> yeah, so we do have a prenup. so many people wanted us to have

a prenup, we do. we thought it was the best for our families. >> juju: gerry and teresa joining the ranks of a handful of divorced "bachelor nation" couples. >> we're honored to be here as you become husband and wife. >> reporter: like bachelorette ashley hebert and j.p. rosen rosenbaum, who tied the knot in 2012 before calling it quits in 2020. most recently, rachel lindsay, the first black bachelorette, and her husband of four years, brian abesolo, announcing their divorce. so many people were inspired by you. the cynical ones might say, i knew it wouldn't last. >> we say, don't give up. >> right. >> we say, stay in it. stay hopeful. because we are. >> juju: will you both continue to look for love? >> oh, yeah. >> uh-huh, yes. >> juju: the new "golden bachelorette" is about to be

>> if you retract, you'll be fine, this all goes away. >> reporter: his acting work planting seeds for him to eventually start directing. >> i was doing tv and film. then i'm watching people. i'm watching how the cameras work. i've sort of picked up through time how that stuff works. it's sort of been a natural process to doing what i've always wanted to do, but also in a filmic way. >> reporter: their careers eventually bringing them together in the leading roles on hbo's "true blood." >> hi, what can i get for you tonight? >> do you have any of that synthetic bottle of blood? >> reporter: which came first, the chemistry off camera or on camera? >> the first time i met him for our get-together before the screen test, because then you have the entire lineup of everybody from hbo, you know in an actual theater. you know. no pressure. >> yeah. >> then we, the next day, did the screen test. and they call them chemistry

reads. >> reporter: now that you're speed dating in front of all the hbo execs -- >> that's very funny. >> i think chemistry gets a funny rap because people assume it's only about, frankly, sexual chemistry. there's just energetic chemistry and creative chemistry, as far as who you click with. >> for the first time in 140 years, i felt something. >> reporter: as streaming has gotten bigger and bigger, have you guys noticed almost a new generation of fans pumping second life into the show? >> people are sort of amazed by it. like, this old guy, meaning me, "you're the cute 37-year-old?" yeah, i'm 54 now, i age. i'm not a vampire in real life. >> reporter: not a vampire, but now a hollywood director who has since collaborated with his wife on multiple projects. >> i don't feel as angry when i'm with you. >> that's fantastic.
