>> we begin tonight with that developing situation in san francisco's jails. multiple attacks over the last two weeks now leading to a lockdown. all weekend. no visitors allowed at two jails as deputies investigate. good evening. i'm dionne lim, the union representing deputies is now calling for the national guard to help in the jails, a move the sheriff's office says is premature. abc seven news reporter j.r stone looks at the staffing issues the union says are the source of the problem. all eyes are now on two san francisco county jails. >> this location on seventh street in san francisco and this location in san bruno. it's a scary time. >> i mean, we've had nine attacks in three weeks on deputies, there's been prisoner fights. there's been civilian staff injured. this is a really violent time. >> that's ken lomba, president of the san francisco deputy sheriffs association that represents deputies, many of whom work inside the jails. lomba has sent this letter to

san francisco sheriff paul miyamoto, calling for the help of the california national guard until low staffing levels can be addressed. as to the deputies who say they were assaulted by prisoners, he had several dislocated shoulders. >> we had deputies, you know, punched in the head severely. we had a deputy bitten with the skin broken. >> the san francisco sheriff's office released a statement sunday saying, we believe that our current internal response strategies will immediately address the increase in assaults on our members. the statement went on to say, we understand that the dsa also ties the recent incidents into low staffing levels and has called for immediate staffing. the national guard is not the answer to the staffing shortage. the sheriff continues to be committed to filling vacancies, recruiting and hiring. we asked the sheriff's office why there has been a rise in violence, but they did not respond to that question, lomba says. the

staffing problem is not new, but it's never been this low, says the san francisco sheriff's office is now 178 people short of where it should be, and believes that is why we've seen these issues recently, the sheriff's office has made changes internally and they have cut positions. they have moved assignments and quite frankly, you know, the inmates are seen the vulnerability in our staffing. we need the mayor to step up. we need the sheriff to step up and get aggressive at hiring the jail assaults are now under investigation, according to the sheriff's office in san francisco. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news two fires across the bay area in a matter of days, and firefighters say lithium ion batteries are to blame. >> firefighters in oakland say one of those batteries exploded, starting this fire at an apartment on east 21st street

near 19th avenue. that fire didn't displace anyone. just last week. another overnight fire in a mountain view apartment was blamed on a battery pack. this one burned a mattress inside the apartment before firefighters put it out. no injuries were reported in either incident wild night on the streets of oakland, with several sideshows shutting down roads overnight, police tracked the dangerous driving at three locations. they say people fired guns there as well and set fire to at least one car. police say the shows broke up once police got there. officers took a few people into custody. moving now to the developing news in the middle east with israel considering its response to iran's unprecedented attack. more than 100 missiles and drones launched at israel yesterday in iran's first direct attack on the nation. it is retaliation for a bombing at an iranian consulate weeks ago.

tonight, the israeli military is allowing schools and public gatherings to resume. it's a sign they believe the threat is over. israel's war cabinet ended a meeting today without a decision on how to respond. president biden is telling israel the u.s. won't participate in an attack on iran, trying to avoid a wider war in the middle east. the white house shared video of the president's call with the us fighter squadrons, who stopped some of the missiles. >> we made an enormous difference, potentially saving a lot of lives and thanks to extraordinary skill in the united states, helped israel take down nearly all those incoming missiles. you're remarkable, mr. president. we thank you for your work ahead at 1130 tonight, the latest on the un's response to the escalation of this conflict and why this attack still managed to surprise us leaders. >> new developments now in the fallout from arizona's near-total ban on abortions tonight, arizona's attorney general is turning to

california, trying to find a way for providers there to practice here. it could help with the expected influx of patients seeking care across state lines. abc seven news reporter tara campbell looks at the impact on abortion providers in the bay area. >> a weekend of protests in arizona in wake of a near-total ban on abortion. when we got access and choice in, nobody that time thought that they were ever taken away from us. the state supreme court reviving a civil war era law banning nearly all abortions. us vice president kamala harris in tucson this week responding the overturning of roe was without any question a seismic event. >> and this ban here in arizona is one of the biggest aftershocks yet. >> and while they rally in arizona, california is bracing, expecting a rush of patients crossing the state line for abortion services.

>> we have increased access for california patients and those fleeing other states. >> gilda gonzales is the ceo of the northern california chapter of planned parenthood. and she says the southern part of the state is likely to see the largest influx there is a surge in one part of california. >> there are those of us in the northern section that can uh- divert and to support our southern california planned parenthood affiliates. >> and she says, california's already been serving as a safe haven for several years. in 2021, a texas law banning abortion as early as six weeks, triggering a wave of abortion bans across the u.s. >> that's essentially when we started to serve out of state patients. we started to see numbers that we had never seen before, and they've been preparing for an attack on reproductive rights for years. we started raising additional dollars and improving our systems in 2020. and anticipation of roe being overturned. so we were already in preparation.

>> arizona's supreme court left a 14 day window open for lower courts to consider challenges to its decision, giving activists a chance to appeal the ruling. >> the next couple of weeks are critical, and that will tell us everything that we need to know going forward. >> tara campbell, abc seven news the white house just approved governor gavin newsom's request for a presidential major disaster declaration in nine california counties, and it includes monterey and santa cruz. >> all of this is in response to powerful storms earlier this year that damaged so many coastal communities. that declaration will make federal public assistance available to help local governments pay for repairs. it also includes federal money to fix storm related hazards statewide. all right, staying on topic our own cold, drizzly weekend is over. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian joins us now with a look at the much warmer, 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> indeed, it is warmer dion. so

if this weekend's weather has gotten you down, tomorrow's weather should lift your spirits. here's a look at the 24 hour planner starting early tomorrow morning. we'll see the clouds that are lingering tonight, starting tomorrow morning, giving us partly cloudy skies at 7 a.m. and it'll still be on the cool side. temperatures in the upper 40s to about 50 by noon. it will be mostly sunny temperatures inland, climbing above 60 degrees, nearly 60 around the bay shoreline. mid afternoon is going to be a mild afternoon. sunny skies, high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s to near 70 degrees and as the sun is beginning to set at 7 p.m, bright blue skies, temperatures dropping into the upper 50s to low 60s. a lovely day ahead, and an even lovelier week. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. >> dion. all right. we like the sound of it spencer. thank you. well we do like to help you get ahead on the big headlines here on abc seven news at 11. so time now for the advancer with a look at the big stories in the days to come. first, let's talk about the history unfolding tomorrow in a new york courtroom. former president donald trump's first criminal trial begins tomorrow

in new york. this is the case over allegations trump faked business records to hide hush money payments to star stormy daniels. the judge rejected several requests to postpone that trial. trump's attorneys tried to argue the judge is biased and the jurors know too much about the case. the judge said the publicity was at least partly trump's fault. this weekend, the former president encouraged his followers to watch. >> have a good time watching, have a good time watching hundreds of potential jurors will be in court tomorrow. >> it's expected to take a week to select that jury. the nation's first criminal trial of a former president could take up to two months. our next advancer the recount begins this week in the silicon valley congressional race that ended in a tie, the mercury news reports. santa clara county will start rescanning ballots in the morning. former san jose mayor sam liccardo secured a spot on november's ballot in the district 16 race, but second

place is a dead split between assembly member evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. all of that means three men will show up on the november ballot, unless the recount comes up with a different number. the mercury news reports. one person who requested a recount has already paid $12,000 for it, and may end up paying even more. and our final abc seven news at 11 advancer the pricey public toilet for san francisco's noe valley is finally open. well, at least about two. the plan for the toilet generated plenty of pushback, with the price tag of $1.7 million. then vendors agreed to donate the restroom, bringing the price down dramatically. noe valley will hold a grand opening celebration for the toilet next sunday to afford to live in the bay area, some teachers say dorm style housing is their only option. we'll take a look at the solutions when pay and pricey rents just don't match up. and a

a community now trying to come to terms with the loss and violence. that shooting happened on riverside drive in a residential neighborhood in old town napa. right now, the search is on for the person behind the trigger. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard spoke to neighbors who saw it all happen and tried to help the victims.

>> extremely disturbing. extremely sad. >> neighbors reacting to a night of deadly violence near downtown napa. police say two female victims were shot and killed saturday night near the napa river. >> i ended up seeing some else that i didn't expect for sure. >> brandon perez lives on riverside drive. he says he heard people fighting, then gunshots. >> i hear a crazy scream that just, you know, sends chills down your spine. >> brandon says he ran to help. did you try to talk to the victim? >> yeah, no, i tried saying like, you know, can you like, like can you, like, try to lean back or just something to, like, help them out? because i saw that they had a couple shots on like, like by there, like right here and then like another one here. i didn't know that, you know, they already had passed on by the time i got to them. >> investigators say another victim was shot and later died at the hospital. brandon believes both victims were teenage girls. he says a car quickly left the scene. >> moment that those shots went off, the car, you know, just kind of magically appeared to be there at the perfect timing, and

then just sped off. >> police say no arrests have been made, and a motive is still unclear. >> it's sad that our community is going to something like this. it's sad to hear that two young girls had to lose their lives. >> neighbors living here on riverside drive believe their neighborhood is quiet and safe, but lately they have seen some changes. >> it's definitely been a little rougher recently just because, yeah, like that right now. and we've been having some, like, gang graffiti, all that stuff. >> i think it was gang related personally. >> police haven't commented whether gangs were involved, but they're asking the public for any information they have. >> all of napa is very safe. it's a very small community. it's a very small town. everyone pretty much knows everyone. so they're they're going to catch the person that did it for sure in napa. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow. paris hilton is heading to the state capitol to testify in favor of regulation for troubled teen centers. the hotel heiress and

socialite is advocating for the accountability in children's treatment act, meant to stop abuse. it would bring transparency to the treatment of youth. in short, terme residential therapeutic programs. in a recent documentary, hilton recounted being emotionally and physically abused at a boarding school in utah when she was 17. applications are open for alameda county's program, helping first time homebuyers afford their down payments. it's giving up to $210,000 loans to people who live or work in the county, or those who were displaced from homes their applicants must be making 120% of the area median income to qualify. recipients will be selected through a lottery with priority to educators and first responders. you can apply online until may 15th. all right spencer, joining me now talking about that warm up. and oh boy give it to us. >> have you had enough of winter like weather yet? >> i think many people have. >> most of us have. yeah. it's going to turn very springlike in

the next few days. here's a look at what's happening right now on the satellite radar composite image. you can see some areas of showers over in the central valley and well to our south, but nothing is happening in the way of precipitation right now in the bay area, although we have lingering clouds and there's obviously some moisture in the atmosphere being picked up by our radar. now winds are pretty calm right now. earlier in the evening, we had pretty breezy conditions, kind of gusty near the coastline. right now, wind speeds are under ten miles per hour across the entire region. and what a warm up from last night this time. ten degrees warmer right now at fairfield. eight degrees warmer in concord, 3 to 5 degrees warmer around the bay shoreline than at this time last night. so let's move along and take a look at current temperature readings, as we also look along the bay and out toward the bay bridge from our exploratorium camera. temperatures are in the low 50s right now at san francisco, oakland, uh, san mateo, half moon bay, mid 50s at hayward and san jose. and now, as we look uh- across the bay from emeryville, of the temperature readings up north mid to upper 40s at santa rosa and petaluma, low 50s at napa, fairfield and

concord, 50 degrees at livermore. now let's check out our forecast headlines. we'll have lingering clouds overnight, but tomorrow will be sunnier, milder and drier than these last two days have been. and for the remainder of the week, we're looking at sunny days and a warming trend. so some very nice spring like weather is coming our way. here's the forecast animation overnight. starting at midnight, there'll be some lingering clouds until about 5 a.m. when the morning commute begins. then we'll see the clouds getting thinner and thinner and lots of sunshine tomorrow. although there will be clouds passing by as well, so we'll call it a partly cloudy day, but with bright bursts of sunlight overnight. low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 40s. a little bit chillier in the far north, where lows will drop down to about 40 at santa rosa and 39 at lakeport. onto tomorrow's highs under mainly sunny afternoon skies. 56 at half moon bay, 61 here in san francisco, right around the bay shoreline. we'll see highs ranging from 64 to nearly 68 degrees inland. east bay up to about 68 at concord, 69 at fairfield. up in the north bay, 70 at santa rosa,

and down in the south bay, a high of 69 at san jose. so it certainly is. will be starting to warm up tomorrow, and it will get even warmer going into midweek. as you look at the accuweather seven day forecast wednesday and thursday, the warming will sort of peak around 80 degrees in our inland areas, mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline. there'll be a minor 2 degrees cooldown on friday when it turns a bit breezy, but temperatures bounce right back up to around 80 degrees inland. on saturday. so even going into next weekend, we can expect mild, sunny and dry are typical spring like weather. the kind of weather i think we've all been sort of waiting for. >> yeah, and two degrees. nothing compared to 20 degree drops. >> that from what was it thursday into saturday a 20 degree drop in our high temperatures. unbelievable >> yeah. >> it was pretty winter like. >> yeah. all right. spencer. thanks. okay. yeah well, a wild save at a hockey game and it didn't happen on the ice. how a fan's fast reflexes stopped a ♪ you've got a friend in me ♪ ♪

returning now to the developing situation in the middle east as israel weighs its response to iran's unprecedented attack, hundreds of drones and missiles launched this weekend in iran's first direct assault on israel.

us officials anticipated this attack but didn't expect it to be so intense. abc news reporter allison kosik has the latest. as israel debates its next move. prime minister benjamin netanyahu meeting with his war cabinet on sunday discussing israel's possible response to iran's unprecedented attack, but no decision was made. >> retired general benny gantz, a member of the war cabinet, saying in a statement that israel would act in a manner and time that is appropriate for us, the un security council calling an emergency meeting on sunday. >> the middle east is on the brink. the people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating, full scale conflict. now is the time to defuze and de-escalate. now is the time for maximum restraint. >> iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles, including more than 100 medium range ballistic missiles, 30 land

attack cruise missiles and more than 151 way attack drones. those missiles lighting up the night sky over jerusalem as air raid sirens blared across the country. >> iran's unprecedented attack was met with an unprecedented defense. >> the us had already sent additional defense assets to the region before the attack. >> i think coming together in such a very, very strong way under the umbrella of the united states central command, together with the british, together with the french and the regional players, sent a very, very clear message to iran that you can't get away with it. >> the us stresses its ironclad support for israel and its right to defend itself, but hopes to avoid a wider conflict. >> we don't seek a war with iran. we don't seek an escalated tensions in the region. >> president biden met with the g7 leaders on sunday. in a statement, the group saying, we express our full solidarity and support to israel and its people

record high, with hundreds of types of medications in short supply, experts say. some patients going without important meds because pharmacies can't get enough, some of the drugs in low supply include treatments for cancer, diabetes, adhd and injectable drugs needed in life saving operations. >> it creates a lot of problems inside the hospital potential for dosing errors. potential for medication errors, and in some cases, patients have to go without therapy or have their care rationed. >> experts blame the shortages on manufacturing delays and limited ingredients after the pandemic. time now for our abc seven news at 11 deep dive. taking an in-depth look at a big challenge. as we build a better bay area, we know finding affordable housing is a struggle, especially for our teachers. so reporter veronica miracle has a look at some potential solutions to make sure our educators can afford to live here. >> bert dixon teaches high school math in one of the most expensive places to live in the

world. the bay area suburbs. to live just three miles from school, he tutors and teaches at a community college. >> i'm veronica, i'm bert. nice to meet you, veronica. did you think at this point in your career you would be working three jobs? >> not really. i thought you know, by this point in my career, i'd be a little bit more financially stable. the salaries didn't really keep up with. with the cost of living. >> working three jobs allows bert to live close enough to school, to bike. there a commute many teachers can't afford. >> do we want teachers that after school? maybe coach sports, get involved in school activities? or do we want teachers that, right after the bell rings that they have to get in their car and start their hour and a half commute? >> claire mcmanmon, new to the profession, could be commuting from far away, too, if it wasn't for this place. she's one of six teachers living in this former san jose parish that's been

converted to communal living. >> my room is right here, okay, i'm getting the sense of like, a dorm room, but like a little bit bigger and more privacy. >> she pays $1,000 a month for this room. a studio apartment in the area would cost more than double that. >> and so for you guys to be able to afford a place around here, is that a struggle? absolutely. >> yeah. it's pretty impossible to afford living in the bay area. >> if you guys did not have this housing situation. do you think that you could live in this area? >> oh my gosh, no, i would definitely leave i definitely would. yeah >> one potential solution to this housing crisis affordable housing financed with government assistance, specifically for teachers and school staff. cities like miami, chicago and los angeles are all building developments like these. >> so we're talking upwards of 400, 450 individuals. it'll be transformative. >> nearly 80% of public schools nationwide struggled to fill

teaching positions for the current school year, with low salaries being a key issue. >> we're in the middle of a national and state teacher shortage. we started the year with about 5% of our classrooms not having teachers. this is a key strategy for us to be able to recruit and retain teachers and other staff in san francisco. >> between his second and third job of the day, dixon grabs a quick bite at home. his wife erin and daughter kelly are also teachers. >> as a mom did you try to talk her out of becoming a teacher? >> no. so, because it was her dream, we just hope that she, can handle it because this is what she's always wanted to do. >> it's not the financial reward that i'm in this for. it's the intrinsic reward of working with the students and feeling success with the students and ultimately , we go in our classrooms and just do the best you can. >> that was veronica miracle
