we owe the government, even though the government already knows. right. if you get it, they just won't penalize you. yeah it's a whole whole system tax day. but there's some there's some deals. >> there are some deals. we'll tell you about those coming up in just a few minutes. we have to begin though this morning with donald trump making history today set to become the first former president to stand trial on criminal charges, trump's new york hush money trial kicks off this morning with the first order of business selecting a jury of his peers. >> as trump attempts to win back the white house, he's denying allegations that he falsified business records to cover up a sex scandal. abc's perry russom starts us off this morning. >> sources describe former president trump as angry and irritated ahead of jury selection in his new york criminal trial. >> this is a fraught moment for all of the people involved, not just the defendant. we've never seen anything even remotely close to this in american history. >> trump faces 34 felony counts. prosecutors say his onetime lawyer. stormy daniels before the 2016 election to keep her quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with

trump. they claim trump falsified business records to hide the payment from voters. trump has pleaded not guilty and denies the encounter with daniels last night, he called the trial election interference, writing, i will be fighting for myself. but much more importantly, i will be fighting for our country. sources say trump's legal team will argue he had nothing to do with logging his own financial books and that cohen is to blame. cohen spent just over a year in prison in 2018 for lying to congress, among other crimes. he's expected to tell jurors that trump directed him to pay daniels. >> the whole case falls apart if the trump lawyers are able to persuade the jury that michael cohen is not to be trusted, and it'll really come down to if he connects with the jury, and you need all 12 of them. if one of them, decides that they're not persuaded, then the government effectively loses. >> hundreds of potential jurors have been summoned. they'll be asked 42 questions, including whether they've attended a trump campaign event or follow him on social media. trump has claimed

to many potential jurors have been exposed to negative stories about him. the trial is expected to last up to eight weeks, and trump is required to attend, meaning he'll be in court four days a week instead of on the campaign trail. sources also say trump's lawyers will try to convince him not to hold news conferences in the courtroom hallway, given fears over repeated gag order violations. the judge has warned trump not to speak about potential jurors if convicted, trump faces up to four years in prison and even if he's reelected to the white house in november, he won't be able to pardon himself because this is not a federal case. >> no matter what, he cannot sort of elect his way or or campaign his way out of this kettle of fish the way he can with the federal cases. >> security also a major focus today. the secret service even requiring actor robert de niro's wardrobe truck for the netflix series c shooting to be relocated for the security detail at the courthouse. perry russom abc news, new york.

>> perry, thank you. also this morning, the world is waiting to see if, when and how israel might respond to that unprecedented attack by iran. >> most of the 300 missiles and drones that were launched on saturday were shot down. at least 50% of those iranian missiles either failed to launch or crashed before reaching their targets. >> after the u.s. helped israel fend off the strike, officials say president biden told prime minister benjamin netanyahu that the us would not participate in any counterattack on iran. abc's britt clennett is in jerusalem. the middle east and the world on edge as they wait to see how and when israel will react to president a direct attack on israeli soil. >> prime minister benjamin netanyahu spending hours with his war cabinet preparing for a response. explosions visible over jerusalem as air sirens rang all throughout the country, the sirens going off in jerusalem. we've just heard several interceptions. you can see missiles flying over there. there are about four in that

direction, three over here. you can see that rocket flying up in the sky just over jerusalem. here. now it's just raining rockets with those sirens blaring out. you can hear the interceptions every few seconds here. more than 300 drones and missiles launched at israel, including more than 100 medium range ballistic missiles, 30 land attack cruise missiles and more than 151 way attack drones. idf spokesperson peter lerner telling me at an airbase on the outskirts of tel aviv, that cooperation with american forces and others meant that they were able to shoot down most of the threats. >> i think coming together in such a very, very strong way under the umbrella of the united states central command, together with the british, together with the french. players, sent a very, very clear message to iran that you can't get away with it. >> but some missiles did make it past their defenses. in a video circulating online, verified by abc news, you can see missiles

striking israel's nevatim air force base. iranians claim this was the site responsible for the strike on an iranian consulate in syria earlier this month that killed top commanders, the president meeting with leaders of the g7 to try and stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation, and while us officials drive home the ironclad support for israel and its right to defend itself, there are also calls for restraint. >> we don't seek a war with iran. we don't seek an escalated tensions in the region. we don't. we don't seek a wider conflict. >> israel's war cabinet spent hours meeting, but sources say no final decision has been made about a response to iran's attack and an idf spokesperson telling me that the military has submitted a wide spectrum of options to the political echelon to calculate the next steps. britt clennett, abc news, jerusalem. >> all right, britt, thank you. the stalled war time aid in congress is now gaining some traction. house speaker mike johnson says he will push this week to advance the $95 billion package, which which includes funding for israel and ukraine. but he is facing eroding support for ukraine among some

conservatives. >> breaking overnight, two officers are dead after a shootout in new york state, detectives say officers answering a call about a stolen vehicle sunday night went to a home near syracuse. then gunfire broke out. a short time later. a syracuse police officer and a county sheriff's deputy were killed, as well as one suspect. no word yet on any arrests. >> arizonans on both sides of the abortion issue rallied days after the state supreme court reinstated a 160 year old law, effectively banning the procedure. dozens of people gathered sunday in scottsdale, one of many rallies since tuesday's ruling. the decision remains on hold for at least one more week to allow a lower court to consider more challenges. >> several regions are under the threat of severe storms today. parts of virginia and north carolina could see damaging wind and an isolated tornado later in the day, and a storm system moving into the plains threatens a wide area from texas all the way to the dakotas. those threats shift further east through the day tomorrow and today is april 15th, also known

won't stand up for me. >> face that wall. the interrogation tapes tonight on abc. >> we're back with a wild moment captured on camera in california. >> a driver had to be hospitalized after his car launched into a home near riverside. he was attempting to turn onto the residential street when this happened. the car suffered heavy damage in the april 4th crash. the driver did get out of the vehicle on his own. he suffered minor injuries. >> for the first time today, someone will be sentenced to prison for the shooting death of a crew member on the set of alec baldwin's movie rust. the film's weapons supervisor faces up to 18 months after being convicted last month. abc's ike ejiochi reports. >> hannah gutierrez

on the set of the movie rust, is set to face a new mexico judge on monday for sentencing. she was convicted last month for involuntary manslaughter stemming from the death of rust cinematographer halyna hutchins, who was killed when a live round from a gun held by actor alec baldwin fired off during an on set rehearsal. >> alec baldwin went off script. hannah gutierrez knew it. >> ahead of monday's sentencing, the state asking the judge to give gutierrez the maximum sentence of 18 months behind bars. prosecutors opposing a conditional early release based on gutierrez's complete and total failure to accept responsibility for her actions, going on to say that her jail calls to friends and family after her conviction show no genuine remorse. the defense, arguing that gutierrez was a scapegoat and the responsibility belonged to producers including alec baldwin. >> she could not anticipate what baldwin would do was not in the

script. it was not foreseeable for the prosecutor. >> they're going to argue both that he created an environment of negligence, but also that he's the last one to hold the gun. and under both theories, they're going to try to argue that he was negligent and eventually culpable for the death of halyna hutchins. >> baldwin is also charged with involuntary manslaughter. he recently filed a motion dismiss the charge, accusing prosecutors of violating nearly every rule in the book to secure a grand jury indictment, the special prosecutor firing back, saying baldwin compromised safety on the set and changed his story about his actions that day, citing when he sat down with our george stephanopoulos. >> so you never pulled the trigger? no no, no, no, no, i would never point a gun at anyone. >> our thanks to ike ejiochi for that. >> as for hannah gutierrez reed, who is being sentenced today, her attorney says she will appeal her conviction. >> movie fans are doing more than talking about the provocative new film civil war this weekend. they sent it to the top of the box office. the film, starring kirsten dunst, pulled in $25.7 million in its
