for 35-year-old frederick sales. sales disappeared last week and police think he could be the fifth victim of 38-year-old efren valdemoro. police say valdemoro beat sales' father ricardo to death last week and killed three other women. valdemoro was shot to death on tuesday after leading police officers on a high-speed chase. people gathered in hercules last night to remember valdemoro's victims. dozens showed up to honor cindy tran, ricardo sales, segundia allen and marcaito smart. they wanted to use this as a lesson. >> we are not judgmental. we are not here to judge people for what they have done. we're here to promote the peacefulness within our community. >> he loved deeply, and his life was complex for him, and he just

cracked. and that doesn't make him a bad person. >> police say valdemoro and tran were romantically linked. trans sons said the two no longer had a relationship and rumor's love triangle were false. a livermore father will be officially charged wednesday with stabbing his son 11 time during a late-night fishing trip this weekend. police say gary gomez took his wife's son and two of his sons friends fishing late on sunday. he reportedly got upset when one of the friends said they had to go home around 2:00 in the morning and ended up getting into a fight with his son. according to police, the boy was stabbed 11 times. his wife was stabbed at least once. gomez also tried to puncture the family's van as the family and wife drove away. none of the injuries are life threatening. the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer is due in court this week.

20-year-old andrew barrientos is scheduled to be formally charged in an oakland court on tuesday. police say barrientos shot todd young several times in oakland on august 27th when young tried to arrest him. 24 hours later police arrested barrientos just 30 feet from the mexican border after investigators tracked him through his cell phone. young is now recovering from a string of surgeries. u.s. troops in afghanistan are under fire. the troops were in the violent kandahar province protecting a school compound under construction when militants attacked. the fighting lasts for more than an hour with several rocket propelled grenades and mortars fired. the afghan soldier, one of them was wounded in the fight. as far as we know now, no u.s. troops or taliban militants were killed. also new this morning, the pakistani taliban is claiming responsibility for today's suicide bombing that killed 17 people including police officers. dozens of others were hurt. the bomber set off a car boemmbn

an alley. the blast shattered the station and nearby homes and killed four children headed to school. the taliban says it is targeting police because they encourage people to set up militias to fight the militants. more than a dozen landslides killed at least 38 people in guatemala over the weekend. about 50 more are believed to be buried under the rubble. torrential rains saturated the ground and unleashed the slide. in one case, rescue crews were pulling people out of a slide got trapped themselves when the mountain above them cracked sending a second wave of rock and mud down. the fight over furlough days is heading to the state supreme court. on wednesday, the high court is set to hear whether the governor has the right to force unpaid days on tens of thousands of state workers in 2009 and this year. a ruling could effect the furloughs going on now as well. the high court will hear arguments on three lawsuits which claim the governor's order

violates a state law which sets a 40-hour work week. the governor argues the state constitution allows him to order furloughs to address the budget crisis. today may be labor day but 11 million americans are still out of work. president obama will be in milwaukee during a weak-long effort trying to show americans he is trying to get those jobs back. >> reporter: this afternoon president obama spends labor day with union workers in milwaukee, union leaders say what has been a day of celebration has become a day of frustration for many. >> 11 million people out of work. i have less to be thankful for. those on wall street are doing quite well. >> reporter: unemployment creeped up to 9.6% on friday. jobs are being created, but not nearly fast enough to employ the millions left jobless in this recession. today and in cleveland wednesday, the president will

talk about the slow recovery and urge congress to approve 100 billion in tax breaks for small business. >> that's what the bottom line is. small businesses are the engine of growth. governments doesn't create the jobs, all we do is help train people for those jobs. >> reporter: the unemployment rate could have a big impact on november's elections. democrats are fighting to maintain control, hammered by republicans who blame them for joblessness in america. president obama will also hold a rare news conference this week where jobs will most likely be the number one issue. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. the markets are closed today but america's top economic officials are still in work. they're in china to meet with the country's foreign minister. the visit is supposed to bolster relations between the u.s. and china and speed up the world's economic recovery. washington and beijing have accused each other of trade protectionism, and economists warn that could slow a global

recovery. president obama is getting ready to start pushing for a $100 billion business tax credit. he will outline his proposal wednesday during a speech on the economy in cleveland. an aide says the business proposal is a key part of a limited economic package. it would reward companies that develop new technologies domestically and preserve american jobs. just like that, the giants are right back in it. this morning they sit a game behind the padres. the giant also spend labor day in arizona. yesterday in l.a. juan uribe hit this two-run home run in the seventh making it 3-0. the giants are taking advantage of a horrendous slump by the padres. they have lost ten straight games. the rockies beat them up yesterday. the padres led the division almost the entire season and had a six and a half lead on the giants as recently as august 25th. >> thousands of people are

expected to spend this labor day at the beach, this is perfect weather for it. but if this weekend is any indication, two recent sightings of great white sharks in the bay area are not keeping people out of the water. last week surfers claim they saw a great white shark attacking a sea lion in pacifica. there was a similar sighting in sonoma county last thursday, and a kayaker was attacked recently off the coast of san mateo county. experts tell us sightings of many varieties of sharks are common this time of year along the northern california coast and in the bay. >> it's not uncommon for them to come into the bay, particularly right underneath the golden gate bridge, into the mouth of the bay. they will feed off sea lions. >> experts say shark attacks on humans are rare, and that these recent shark sightings should be a reminder for people who go into the area to be careful. new this morning, there is a new storm named in the gulf of

the sun comes up in one hour and 31 minutes if you're keeping track. happy hour and every other hour could cost you more in san francisco soon. on tuesday, the board of supervisors will vote on a plan that would place a fee on alcohol distributors. that would add a couple pennies per bottle of beer, glass of wine or mixed drink. the idea is to cover $17 million in un-reimbursed health care costs related to alcohol abuse. that fee would apply to wholesalers who sell alcohol in san francisco, but ultimately the cost will be passed ton consumers. this week marks the start of the bottom kill effort at the oil leak site in the gulf of mexico. bp is beginning process of permanently plugging the leaking oil well. at the same time it is also trying to figure out what caused the spill. crews hoisted the failed blow-out preventer to the surface over the weekend. the site leader says finding answers will honor the 11 men who died when the rig exploded.

>> they deserve this. they deserve this to come up. we need to find out not only for them and their memories but for the industry. i know they would want it no other way. >> the failed blowout preventer is headed to a nasa facility in louisiana for analysis. bp says once the bottom kill is complete there's very little danger of another leak in the gulf. this morning, police and volunteer also continue their search through an east bay landfill looking for the body of a missing man. he could be the fifth victim of a killing spree this week. christie smith is live in pittsburg where crews will be back at work today. >> reporter: good morning to you. in just a couple of hours, day four will begin in this search of a pittsburg landfill for the body of frederick sales. investigators have been at it for some time. so far no sign of him at all. i can tell you police and volunteers have been at it since friday. now, the investigation turned to the landfill after police found

a cadillac escalade at a business park in hercules, that was driven by efren valdemoro, the suspect in the killing of sales dad and valdemoro's own girlfriend. the chp shot and killed valdemoro, two other victims were also linked in this killing spree. trash from the business park ends up at the landfill, also it should be noted that valdemoro once worked at the business park. that's the tie there. this stunning list of tragic deaths here prompted a vigil for those involved. some knew the victims, others did not. >> my heart is breaking. >> reporter: now, investigators had romantically linked valdemoro and victim cindy tran. they said initially jealously may have prompted the killing of tran and the elder ricardo sales, frederick's father, but tran's sons said at the vigil that the two no longer had a relationship and rumors of a

we can tell you so far they have found no sign of him, but they do have good reason to keep going back to the keller canyon landfill in pittsburg. they cordoned off about a one-acre area, that's where they are focusing in on. the investigation took police there, first of all, to a hercules business park when a cadillac escalade was found there. it apparently belongs to efren valdemoro who ones worked there. and trash at the business park ends up at the landfill. in all, four people have been killed in this spree, not including efren valdemoro, the suspect. this weekend dozens of people came out to a vigil for all the victims. some knew them, otherses did not. >> we are not here to judge people for what they have done. >> reporter: investigators have said that a romantic jealously

finance those projects, and all of this paid for by rolling back oil and gas tax breaks. now, on wednesday, the president goes to cleveland and he's going to talk about a different idea, $100 billion in research tax breaks for small businesses. the idea being if small businesses can get this tax break, they'll be in a better position to create new jobs. these tax breaks ran out, they expired in december. president obama is hoping to make them permanent. as you said, unemployment nationally now at 9.6%. the obama administration and the democrats headed into an election trying everything they can to create some new jobs, especially in the next two months. garvin? >> thank you very much, tracie. >> the downturn in the economy is also leading to a downturn in births. bay area hospitals say fewer babies were born in 2009 than the year before. doctors say they've heard from

you. investigators are focusing on a one-acre area inside the landfill in pittsburg, but, you know, as you can imagine, there are literally tons of trash to sort through. if the body of frederick sales is here, there are no clues to search for. it's not clear when he would have been brought here. investigators have good reason to keep coming back, they say. the suspect in the bay area killing spree, efren valdemoro once worked at the hercules business park where an suv was found. it is believed valdemoro drove the suv. it was owned by one of the victims. we should also note trash from that hercules business park is brought to the landfill in pittsburg. also this weekend, there was a vigil for the victims in all this, including valdemoro's one-time girlfriend, cindy tran. investigators have said that jealousy may have set valdemoro

off, that he thought she may have been having an affair with sales or his father. but her children say that is not true. the search resumes this morning. christie smith, nbc bay area news. some economists are urging the obama administration to let the housing market crash. the administration rolled out a series of programs in an attempt to prop up the market in the last year and a half but sales still sank 26% in july. now experts say if the market is allowed to crash the prices will drop and new buyer also come in. craigslist has removed one of its links that's long been under fire for racy material. >> reporter: among the lists of things for sale and jobs, there

is the other side, the adult services section, including thinly failed offers of prostitution. over the weekend the adult services link was removed and replaced with this. sensored, a little black box that leads you no where. >> we are thankful that craigslist has shut down the adult services section. we believe that that act really lessens the suffering of so many girls who are being sold for sex. >> reporter: the website operates around the world but the link is only blocked in the u.s. craigslist won't say if it is permanent or temporary or a message to the critics, last month attorneys general in 17 states wrote a joint letter to craigslist demanding they remove the adult services section. >> craigslist is operating an online red light district as obvious and in plain view as times square was in the 1970s or '80s. >> reporter: the website came under scrutiny last year after

the arrest of phillip markoff. police say he attacked women who posted adult ads on craigslist. he was charged with murdering one of them. markoff later killed himself in jail. craigslist vowed to crack down on sex ads. earlier this year, our nbc news hidden camera investigation still found many women on craigslist offering prostitution. >> hi, how are you? >> craigslist has to be held accountable. it's making tens of millions of dollars from these kinds of ads which is outrageous. >> reporter: in fact, a new report finds craigslist makes millions of those adult service ads. $36 million this year alone, triple from what it made last year. >> i do hope that this has been shut down and it's not a game of semantics. >> reporter: the mystery swirls around this single word, and the question, will it stay or will it go. jeff rossen, nbc news, new york. san jose's eating champ met his match this weekend. joey chestnut competed in the chicken wing eating contest in

buffalo, new york. he lost, even though he ate 169 wings. that is more than four and a half pounds of meat. sonia thomas was crowned the champ, she ate 181 wings in 12 minutes. thomas is just five feet tall and weighs 105 pounds, or is it 105 plus four now? she previously set eating records for oysters, hard boiled eggs, cheesecake and jalapeno peppers. now a story that centers on a young man fired from his dream job. >> laura garcia-cannon shows us instead of sitting down on the couch and moping, he did something many of us wish we could do which is travel the country on a musical journey. ♪

>> reporter: this is a piece of a song and video that one of our producers found floating around facebook, you are watching a 28-year-old who took off on a 40-day tour of the country living out of his car along the way. that was just part of the story. here to tell us the rest of it is tony himself, here with us via skype. impressive song. >> thank you. >> what inspired it? >> well, you know, basically people ask all the time what were you doing all over the country? what happened was, you know, i was a sportscaster in columbus, this is my hometown, columbus, ohio. like many people in today's economy, i had been laid off my job. for me, it was a dream job. it's all the i wanted to do. i was content there. when you get laid off from your dream job, you kind of ask what's next. i asked some friends, and they say you do what you always wanted to do but you couldn't do because you had a job. for me, one of my biggest passions and hobbies growing up has been playing music.

so i literally made a tour for myself. i looked around the internet, found open mics all over the country and decided to go on tour. >> i love it. so you wrote this song that you sing, and you talk about specific parts of the country but you went to those parts to film your own video. >> right. i basically knew i was going to take a nationwide trip and i wrote a song specifically for the sake of making a video. i wanted something that would go viral on youtube, and i guess maybe it's working a bit so far. >> one of the spots you hit was right here in the bay area. you went to the gold en gate bridge, there's a great line in the song about the san francisco bay, but along the way you got people, anybody you could find to shoot the video for you? >> yeah. most of the trip was done by myself. a lot of times i had to ask perfect strangers.

that shot where the pretty girl in san francisco bay, it took like an hour to find someone who would be willing to be in the shot with me. eventually that woman is engaged, she lives in ireland. she was there with her fiance visiting, he offered her up for the video. he is actually holding the camera there shooting that shot. there's a million great stories about that kind of stuff from the road trip and they're on my blog. >> so you even started a blog. there's the picture we're talking about. it's unique, fun to watch. what now for you? >> while i was on the road, i was looking for sports casting jobs, and i landed one in north carolina on a part-time basis. that continues. i want to carry music as far as i can. i don't feel i got the greatest stage presence in the world but i love writing songs. i know i can write songs. i would love do it on a higher level. >> i beg to differ because

you're doing great. >> tell us about your sister, at the very end of the video it's dedicated to her. what happened? >> as i was in seattle, the furthest from home i could be in the contiguous 48, i got a phone call from home that she has been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, there's only 100 cases in the united states. there's no cure. she is in no short-term peril, but long-term it's serious. on my website, 40daytour.com you can make a donation to vanderbilt university med center, they're the best in the country for finding a cure for this sort of thing. anybody who has the means to do so, we -- my whole family would appreciate it. >> of course. you're turning it into a good cause. we wish the very best to her. continued success to you, your new job. continue on the recording tour. we love it. really fun to see.

degrees warmer than it was 24 hours ago. it's calm throughout the area. not much wind. a bit of a storm brewing way to the north of us. won't be effecting us and our weather until the next 48 hours or so. we're not going to have any clouds on the entire coastal area, and they're not going to be coming in until tonight into tomorrow morning. as we look ahead in the numbers today, things will be warming up slowly, 8:00 in the morning, the sun is coming up in about a half hour or so. by lunch time we'll see much higher numbers, in the higher 70s. the higher 80s. we will get to the mid 80s around the bay. 85 in oakland today. close to 90 in san jose for our high. san francisco is even going to be reaching up to about 80 degrees. if you're thinking about traveling today, a day trip or longer, it's hot pretty much everywhere throughout the state, in the 100s in palm springs. santa barbara, 80s. monterey, 74. 90s, close 100 just about
