also, a strong warning against the tsa's policy change to allow some knives back on the planes. the head of the organization that represents air marshals says quote flight attendants are going to be sitting ducks end quote. we'll talk about that with the vice president of the association of flight attendants. and we have new information this morning on what triggered a deadly lion attack at an animal park in california. the victim was identified overnight as a 24-year-old woman weeks into an internship at the park. we start with new threats this morning with the strong winter storm as it arrives in the northeast. al, good morning to you. >> a big, powerful storm coming on shore into california. we'll get to that in a second. let's start with this nor'easter that we're watching. worcester, massachusetts, gusting, anywhere from another 3 to 8 inches of snow there. then along the new jersey

shoreline, up to five communities now with voluntary evacuations because of the strong winds, the high tides. there has been some coastal flooding, so people are keeping an eye on that. you can see how angry the storms are. the winds blew over this 18-wheeler perched precariously along the guardrail and in tindly park, illinois, wind and snow combined to push this school bus off the road and into an apartment building. thankfully, no kids on the bus. the driver walked away without injuries. we take a look at the northeast, you can see heavy rain and snow making its way through the northeast. we'll probably see about 3 to 5 inches of snow in the new york city area. in eastern connecticut, and also parts of new england. we may pick up about 3 to 5, maybe 8 inches of snow, as well, as this pushes away.

we do have coastal storm watches and warnings as the system moves away. we expect that to finally die down. as you can see there, coastal flood threats, looking at strong winds and coastal flooding. high tides about 2 to 4 feet above normal. we'll continue to track that. as we look at the snowfall totals, winter storm watches, winter storm warnings making their way into new england. that's because into new england we expect anywhere from 5 to 8 inches of snow there. in fact, boston could pick up to 10 inches of snow by early saturday morning. now to this other storm we're watching out on the west coast. we've got a big system that's going to be pushing in. that's going to be bringing in a lot of rain and a lot of snow into parts of flagstaff, arizona, also heavy rainmaking its way through southern california, as well. in fact, from los angeles all the way up into san diego we're going to be looking at more of that.

we'll check that out coming up in the next few minutes. matt? a rare filibuster came to an end in the senate overnight while president obama held an even rarer dinner with republican lawmakers. chuck todd joins us now. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. what a wednesday night in washington. first that rare sight you were talking about, an actual filibuster that's filled with actual talking. mr. smith goes to washington-type drama played out for 12 hours led by republican rand paul who decided to filibuster the confirmation of cia director to be john brennan in an attempt to get the white house to promise never target americans with drones on u.s. soil. it started as a one-senator crusade just before lunch. >> i will speak until i can no longer speak. >> reporter: republican rand paul wants assurances from the president and eric holder that

drones will not be used to target americans on u.s. soil. >> the president should just very frankly answer the question, i will not kill noncombatants. >> reporter: a few fellow tea party republicans joined in. >> i believe the inquiry senator paul raised is a legitimate one. >> reporter: by mid-afternoon, a democratic. senator majority leader harry reid tried to put a stop just before dinner. >> we need to know if we're going to finish tonight or tomorrow or the next day. >> reporter: as the hour got late, things got punchy. >> that takes me back to another modern day poet by the name of jay-z. >> we few, we happy few, we band of brothers. >> reporter: but paul, who filibustered for nearly 13 hours finally had to end when natured called.

>> but i thank you very much for the forberns and i yield the floor. >> reporter: the democratic president breaking bread with republican senators. >> the dinner supposed to be quiet, sad it makes news. but in the normal in washington, a dinner like this makes news. it came from lindsey graham during a phone conversation last weekend. those invited to the dinner focused to stop the budget standoff were invited by graham and not the president. his closest senate friends were on the list but also invited senators who have a particular interest in the budget debate, including tea party favorites. >> a very open honest sincere general discussion. >> if there's one issue democrats and republicans agree in congress, it this is fact they don't think president obama reaches out enough, but it's clearly a big change in strategy, and you see it today,

his lunch partner today at the white house, paul ryan. matt? meanwhile, there is new opposition this morning to the tsa's decision to allow passengers to carry small knives on to planes. representatives for the federal air marshals and flight attendants say they want that policy change to be reconsidered. sarah nelson is the president of the association of flight attendants and also a flight attendant for united airlines. good to have you here. >> thank you so much. >> were you shocked by the policy change? did it come as a complete surprise to you? >> a complete surprise. we were not briefed or advised and it's outrageous. and i'm hearing from flight attendants throughout the country, this has to be changed. >> we have props on the table and you can see some of the knives down on the table here that would now be allowed to be carried on to a flight. you're a flight attendant standing in the center aisle going over safety procedures. how are you going to feel -- they are not big, but they can

be used as weapons. how will you feel knowing some passengers may have those in their pockets. >> look, they are a deadly weapon and it's unnecessary. it is unnecessary to put them on our aircraft. after september 11th, the policy changed and changed for a reason. we didn't know the threat -- >> what's the scenario you worry about the most? you're standing on the plane. what's the scenario. >> it comes in a lot of different fashions. we talk about what happened on september 11th. we have unruly passengers. fuller planes than ever and don't have air marshals on every flight. we have people who can act out. if you put a weapon in their hand the situation we can contain today with the help of the passengers we can direct are now in a much more dangerous position. it's just unnecessary. >> we invited the tsa to appear but they declined saying this allows transportation security officers to better focus their efforts on finding higher threat

items such as explosives. in other words, focus on objects that can bring an airliner down. does that make any sense at all? >> it doesn't make any sense to me because i'm a flight attendant who works in the cabin and my job is to act as first responder and the last line of defense. we carry that with us every single day to work, and the millions of pmgs that fly on our airplanes expect this is a safe aviation system and expect to be protected. it's not just about protecting the cockpit and making sure that airplane doesn't come down, it's about protecting all the people in that cabin. >> are you surprised the pilots association has come out in support of this policy change? >> that's incredibly unfortunate because the flight attendants are in back as the last line of defense defending that aircraft. we need the support to make sure our cabin and workspace and travel space for millions of passengers is safe as well.

prosecution trials. a jury in maine found businessman mark strong guilty of promoting prostitution. prosecutors said he managed the business run by alexis wright out of her zumba studio. wright has pleaded not guilty. gabrielle giffords made an emotional return to the scene that left her wounded. she laid flowers in tucson, arizona, where six people were killed and 13 injured two years ago. she then made a plea for gun control, urging congress to be, in her words, bold and courageous, but supporting background checks for gun buyers. wall street has momentum and facebook is getting a new look. jackie joins us from cnbc's good morning to you. >> the positive momentum continues on wall street as the markets trade higher this morning. some upbeat economic data providing support. today's action comes after the dow hit another all-time closing

high yesterday. and facebook holding a press event at its california headquarters unveiling a redesigned news feed. in january, mark zuckerberg said the look could include more photos, video, and engaging ad. >> sounds interesting. thanks so much. and the freeze and thaw cycle has created a bumper crop of giant icicles in canada. workers are busy cutting them down, but some of the larger icicles now have their own twitter accounts, as does everything nowadays. some of those you see three stories high, crazy. >> also on pinterest. natalie, thank you so much. >> al's back with another portion of the forecast. >> that's right. as we looked out west, we got a big storm that's going to be pushing in and that storm is going to be bringing a lot of rain from it. from san francisco to los angeles, we expect to see anywhere from about a half an inch to an ench of rain, so that's going to cause some

problems. then as we make our way as far as the winter part of the system, the wasatch, sierra could be looking up to a foot to two feet of snow. and we're even looking at a pretty good snowstorm in flagstaff, arizona. they could pick up 6 to 9 inches of snow in the next 48 hours. to the west of denver, upwards of 2 feet of snow working its way in. today, though, here's what we've got. showers in salt lake and a temperature of 47. phoenix, gorgeous day. plenty of sunshine. billings, montana, sunny and 51. denver is at 60 degrees right now. then in the next 48 hours, they will be in the midst of a very big snowstorm. medford looking at clouds and a temperature of about 30. we'll get to your local forecast right after this message. but there are some things i've never seen before. this ge jet engine can understand 5,000 data samples per second. which is good for business. because planes use less fuel, spend less time on the ground and more time in the air.

world. >> reporter: it is italian newspapers where many leaks seem to appear. even today the stamper has more details. >> the american cardinals are doing pennants for the sins of others. it's the italians who leaked things to italian papers. >> reporter: amid the tension cardinals spent wednesday night in prayer but no clue yet who might be chosen or even when. ordinary catholics from the u.s. among wednesday's congregation. >> i want to show my support of solidarity for the cardinals, because they have a very heavy responsibility on their shoulders, electing a new pope. >> reporter: in the sistine chapel, work is under way to prepare the vote, the conclave. and here it the paper is burned after each indecisive vote. and all this will be done in secret. first, they must set a date for

the conclave to start, and so far even this simple diary date is still shrouded in mystery. so, savannah, we understand now that the cardinals will meet this afternoon and that they may well then make a decision. if they do, then that will be announced to the media, even though there isn't another official briefing. nbc news has learned that the final cardinal who can vote in the conclave is now here in rome. the cardinal from vietnam. he arrived here in the last few hours. we understand no official confirmation of that, and that means that they are ready and prepared to hold the conclave to be able to hold their votes. and that means, clearly, that they are able to announce a start date for the conclave as soon as possible. >> very quickly, we saw that picture of pope benedict, tell me how that shot was taken.

crime scene after wednesday's deadly mauling of a volunteer. >> at approximately 8:00 p.m., a female volunteer intern entered the lion enclosure where she was attacked. >> when my deputies arrived on scene, the victim was still in the enclosure. >> reporter: family members say the victim is 24-year-old diana hansen. they say she's always loved big cats and that the internship was a dream come true. attempts to distract the lion away and into another enclosure didn't work, so deputies shot the animal, but by then it was too late. >> the worker was found to be deceased. >> reporter: park officials identicaled the lion as 4-year-old couscous. he was even on the ellen degeneres show. according to the associated press, since 1990, at least 21 people have been killed by exotic cats. 246 people have been mauled.

7:30 on a thursday morning. that's a live picture in worcest worcester, mass. you can see a mixture of snow and rain this morning and in new jersey, the rain is pounding the shoreline, hard hit by super storm sandy not long ago. you can see they don't need more rain or snow. the last day and a half of snow could get about a foot of snow in parts of massachusetts. al will have much more on that. matt lauer alongside savannah guthrie. >> and it will be hard hit in

parts of that area. and coming up, why are some used cars being sold with potentially dangerous safety defects. and we will meet four special forces veterans using their military skills and know-how to rescue rhinos from the edge of extension. more on that story. let us begin in the next half hour with a call to urgent action to stop the spread of a nightmare super bug showing up on some hospitals. nbc chief nancy snyderman has more. >> reporter: the cdc doesn't casually use the word "nightmare" but exactly what they're calling cre, a super bug resistant to an antibiotic of last resort. 42 states, 4% of short stay hospitals and 18% of long term care facilities have reported problems. so far, the infections have been

contained to hospitals and nursing homes, infecting the severely ill. the fear and challenge is to keep these bacteria from reaching the general population. >> it's resistant to nearly all antibiotics. the normal issue of giving someone an antibiotic and curing them becomes very difficult. >> that's a real concern because the pharmaceutical industry is focusing on diseases like obesity and alzheimer's and there really aren't any antibiotics in the pipeline. >> last year, at the national institutes of health, it affected 18 people and six died and the alarm was sounded. the hospital in new york is accepting all patients and separating them. and they find they unknowingly infect patients into their institution. since they could make common

that will be a big problem. right now, 120,000 folks without power. the bulk in virginia, about 6,000 canceled today, most in the underneath. new arc newark and laguardia. snowfall has been way down but right now almost 30 inches of snow. normally 31 inches, a little less than an inch and a half below where they should be. rainfall. atlanta picking up the rain. 12 1/2 inches of rain. 2.7 inches above where they should be. let's show you what's going on for the rest of the country. today, temperature-wise, twenty and 30s great lakes and plains and 70s and 80s in texas and expecting a big snowstorm making its way to the rockies later today and tonight and pacific northwest and california coast with showers and high surf.

u.s. last year alone. this affects a lot of people. when you buy a car from a dealer, you ask a lot of questions. is it safe? is it reliable, especially with used cars. when the dealer says, yeah, all good, you trust them. this morning, we're going under cover with cars for sale with unfixed safety recalls. and some sellers not telling the whole story. we're in the heartland of america, st. louis, missouri, shopping for a used car in good condition. >> i'm looking for a safe reliable car. >> reporter: but our investigation found dozens of dealers selling popular models with potentially dangerous secrets. open safety recalls ordered to be fixed by the manufacturers. >> reporter: you're telling consumers this car is safe but there's an open safety recall. don't you think you should tell that? >> yes. >> it only took us a few minutes to find the safety defect. why aren't you telling consumers

that. >> reporter: last year, millions had unfixed recalls, including car fires, loss of control on the road, even rollovers. >> you have brakes that fail, steering that fails, lights that don't work, safety defects. >> reporter: do used car dealers always disclose the danger? we went under cover at several where we found used cars for sale with open safety recalls. >> this is it. >> reporter: at this dealer, we check out this nissan suv. we ran the vin and know it's been recalled for airbags that may not work. good news. the dealer is open about it. >> that's something we always check. there is an open service record for recall. >> if i wanted to drive the car off the lot today and buy it? >> i think we would probably get it fixed for you today. >> reporter: at this next dealer. >> i was interest in that 2007 hyundai up front.

>> reporter: we aren't so lucky. >> a brand new set of tires on it. >> reporter: this dealer says it needs a new sensor and has a lot of miles. but no safety problems. >> it's perfectly safe. i ran it through my mechanic, did his 1 wh00 point something inspection on it. >> reporter: 100 point inspection, that's great. this car has been recalled for a stopped lamp switch that could keep the cruise control running even when you hit the breaks, a malfunction that could lead to a crash. records show this car hasn't been fixed but the dealer doesn't tell us that. >> reporter: so there's nothing i donneed to worry about? >> shouldn't be, otherwise we wouldn't have it here. >> reporter: time for us to break this deal. hi, jeff rossen from nbc news. did you know there is an open recall on this car, potentially dangerous one? >> i didn't know that. >> reporter: you didn't know? >> no. if i did, i would have it fixed. >> reporter: that's your job. you're selling this to customers and telling them outwardly this

car is safe and there's an open safety recall on this. >> i apologize for that. i do the best i can and i can't look up every make and model car there is. >> reporter: experts say that's outrageous. it takes just minutes to look up a recall. he didn't want to talk anymore. >> reporter: at this next dealer, we're checking out this popular honda minivan. looks great. but we know it has an open recall for the brakes. they may not work well. listen to what the dealer tells us. >> no safety defects? >> no. i can show you the carfax and drive. >> reporter: anything on it i need to worry about? >> no. i'm willing to show it to you. if there's nothing on it, i ain't going to show it to you. >> reporter: he shows us another report that doesn't track recall recalls. >> no problems or anything? >> otherwise you would see red. >> reporter: i have questions and the safety manager comes out. >> if there were safety recalls it would be -- >> your manager said there were no recalls.

>> that is something i would probably need to talk to him about. >> reporter: what if a person bought it and got in an accident. >> reporter: you're talking about a safety recall? why does it take me to tell you? >> i will take care of it. >> reporter: we took it to the group responsible for used car dealers. >> it should be released. >> reporter: believe it or not there is no federal law requiring them to. >> reporter: sitting here, would you support a bill to require these car dealers to fix every car they take in? >> ion that i would take that point at this point. >> reporter: because you represent the industry. >> just because of where we're at with the industry as a whole. >> reporter: he shade there's no reliable database for recalls and consumers need to do their homework, too. safety experts say that's a weak

well and you think, then i won't have to use this. but the possibility, it seemed to me, existed it would not and i would want to be able to remember stuff later on. >> i had the pleasure of interviewing your mom on several occasions, the pleasure of sitting next to her at a couple of dinner parties. she was delightful and very funny. one of the things that stood out to me you wrote, even as she slipped in and out of a kind of consciousness, she retained her sense of humor. >> she did. there was this moment the nurses and doctors were saying to her, tell me your name. she says nora ephron. they say, what hospital are you in? >> new york hospital. >> who's the president of the united states? shiites couldn't answer or was done answering and rolled her eyes and wouldn't answer. >> lost her patience. her career is legendary and movies seared into our conscience. guy you think her writing and style of writing resonated with

prior warnings to him and witnesses his behavior and witnessed this individual creating a disturbs to neighbors in violation of local law. he was been ticketed twice for disturbing the peace and faces $500 or a month in jail. legal experts say jail time isn't likely. technically you could go to jail for disturbing the police. as a former prosecutor and public defender, i can tell you i never put any in jail for laughing or disturbing the peace or being loud, usually just a small fine. at his arraignment earlier this week, the judge declined to dismiss the case. his lawyer says he will keep fighting the fine but the next court date has not been set yet. you have to admit it's a little infectious. we were all laughing. >> hopefully they will come to some sort of agreement. >> you hope so. with neighbors, it's hard if no one is willing to move.

. ♪ everyone has a moment zi hear a rumor. today we meet our nighest p has a story contest winner. 36-year-old daniel and his girlfriend mindy. daniel wrote to us to tell us about his diagnosis with a rare stage four cancer and mindy's constant support. >> we're going to meet everybody in a moment, but, first, let's listen to daniel's story. >> i was recently diagnosed with a rare cancer at age 35. during hurricane sandy, my mother became severely ill and was in the intensive care unit in florida. my girlfriend, mindy, and i live in new jersey. we were without power and unable to get a flight to florida where my mother was fighting for her life. we finally were able to rent a car and drive there to see her.

during my visit with my mother in icu, i was having a severe stomach ache and was admitted to the hospital. on november 17th my mother passed, and on november 19th i was diagnosed with stage four rare peritinial cancer. my girlfriend, mindy, was devastated by the news, as was my father. mindy is an amazing woman and works with underprivileged kids. she is extremely giving. during the past couple of years we have raised money together for organizations and trained to run in order to honor people that are sick. on december 19th i went to maryland to have major surgery to remove as much cancer as possible to help prolong my life. i was in the operating room for close to 12 hours and spent four weeks in the hospital. mindy slept in the hospital by my side. unfortunately, my cancer is rare, and there is not much they can do at this point. our dreams of having a family

and a life together are now in turmoil. especially getting married. we missed christmas and new year's. i was in such bad shape that for weeks i could not move or speak. i was just laying in my hospital bed. i am still recovering from the surgery and have limited mobility and pain. the prognosis is not good due to the type of cancer. mindy has stuck by my side through everything. i would like to do something special to honor her. >> and that's what we hope to do today. daniel is here with his girlfriend, mindy, and his father, larry. we're so, so glad you could make the trip. you seem like you're doing pretty darn well, daniel. >> i'm working hard at it. >> how are you feeling? >> um, it's hard. it's -- you know, every day i have new challenges, and i guess that's part of having cancer, but, you know, i was glad that i was able to get here today and, you know, again, just -- it's one of those things i never thought would happen to me. we've always been there, me and

today a grieving and grateful community comes together for a final salute to two santa cruz officers who lived and died protecting and serving their city. good morning and thanks for being with us. i'm marla tellez. >> and i'm jon kelley. good morning, everyone. on the force, butch baker and elizabeth butler were both accomplished veterans with a combined 38 years on the duty. but at home, they were parents whose deaths are leaving an unimaginable loss for their families and also for the entire community. and now the bay area coming together to remember two lives cut tragically short.

this morning, we have live coverage of today's motorcade and public memorial to honor and celebrate those fallen officers. mike inouye is looking at the impact out on the roads of today's memorial. but we start off with nbc bay area's bob redell. he is live at hp pavilion right now where the ceremony will start in about an hour from right now. bob, you've been watching as hundreds of officers left today from santa cruz in a motorcade, no doubt nothing short of an emotional morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. just moments ago, within about the past 15 minutes, the hp pavilion opened up their front doors so mourners could start filing in for this memorial. they'll start at noon, as you mentioned, for sergeant loran baker and his partner, officer elizabeth butler. two santa cruz police officers shot and killed last week by a man who they were investigating. just about an hour ago, their families and fellow officers arrived here at the hp pavilion. they were part of a funeral procession that stretched for
