i had written a song along with john mcdaniels for a new little musical -- a little revue we're doing called "a table at neary's" about the different people that go to neary's. and it's just an extraordinary experience. talk about finding a family in new york. so my friend matt wolfe who had been in "scandalous," a real sweet guy and a talented guy, sang a song and surprised jimmy. >> oh. >> i think we have a little bit of that video. ♪ ♪ that dream at the end of the rainbow ♪ ♪ i worked hard and kept my nose clean ♪ >> frank and i went to his restaurant when we first bought our apartment over on east 57th street 27 years ago and it was love at first bite.

request, please, from anybody who knows how to deal with canadian geese. that's all i can say. yesterday i -- >> tell it. >> yesterday i go out with our dogs. it was a gorgeous day. you can smell spring in the air. there must have been 200 honkers in -- all in that area. >> do they bite? >> they're just -- they're nasty. and now they're on their way back to canada where they should have never left. but they all come and visit our whole neighborhood every year. lola loves to go out and chase them. and usually they like to land on the swimming pool or something. well, the pool is still closed. so they're everywhere. and their poo is green and disgusting. so anyway. they're like a couple hundred of them. i go lola, go get them. >> go get the geese? >> lola not only got the geese in our yard. then lola decided to help out our neighbors. she went over to our neighbors, 100 more geese, and she jumped up on the seawall. and i went no, no, no, lola. she dove -- she jumped into the long island sound, which is at

low tide, and for the next 15 minutes was up to here in muck trying to get the geese. >> oh. >> frank and i have to get her out of there. you know, you have to go a way a long way to get around, low enough so she can barely jump up. then we've got to clean her off. you know, it's so freezing outside. all your hoses aren't working. so we have this hot house. >> of course you do. >> of course we do. >> oh, my god. >> frank's in the gym. he can't hear. i'm screaming my lungs out. he can't hear. finally he comes, what, what is it? i said lola. he goes, oh, my god. so we're chasing her all over the back yard. louie, bambino, everybody is going crazy. and i think the neighbors are thinking the giffords have finally lost it. finally we get -- now, frank falls trying to catch lola. now, frank is on blood thinners. so when frank gets a cut, it's like a crime scene. so now i'm in the hot house trying to clean off lola with tar, it looks like she's been

dropped in the la brea tar pits, and frank who is bleeding like a monkey. and it's unbelievable. >> you're spraying them both down? anybody that has any advice on how i -- without, you know, shooting them, which i think would not be right. >> that's not fair. >> no. no, no, no, no. that wouldn't be fair. i mean, them doing what birds do. i just don't want them to do what birds do there, at my house. >> i can't believe that happened. >> it was unbelievable. we'd love some advice. sara. all right, my darling? >> i think we should talk about our favorite things. >> this one, you guys, i have found the headphones, headsets to beat all headsets. these are the best headsets i've ever had. these are called x-1. they are water resistant. you put them in your ears. you know how awesome with the iphone earpieces they're always falling, in you can't keep them in when you're working out? they stay in your ears. when i run, i really do, i sweat a lot. i've ruined so many pairs of headphones just because of that. these are perfect. and not only that -- >> they're water resistant. you can swim in these.

>> people are, i think starting to get -- this act when he threatened in his girl voice to beat up a photographer was probably not winning any fans. but i think that he's -- i think he's not making any new fans the way he's behaving. and if you're a parent, you don't want to see your kid go to this. >> i'm going to say something i probably shouldn't say. >> here we go. >> you know what? i've met several of the people that are around him that are not good for his career. >> interesting. >> they are not good for his career. i'm not going to name who they are. but when his mom stopped traveling with him as much and other people have influence on him that are not in it for the same reasons, it's showing now. it's showing. >> he's too young to act this way. too much. >> this next story didn't get a lot of play. but i read in a few places kelly osbourne fainted, had a seizure. what happened? >> then they said she had just fainted. it was on the set of "fashion police." she kind of turned over and said i don't feel that well. she's still hospitalized. we thought was mieb dehydration. there have been reports of epilepsy. but the doctors are saying that's not true, we've not said anything. they're still trying to figure out why she's in the hospital. so as of right now, still there. >> we were with her last month

as parents we try to protect our children as much as possible. give them all the encouragement they need and help them succeed at everything they do.

>> but as hard as it may be, letting your kids fail from time to time will actually help them in the long run. anne mccready is a "today's mom" sxribt author of "if i have to tell you one more time." >> and jennifer hartstein is the author of "princess recovery." welcome ladies, to you both. you say something like this. if they fail, we fail too. is that what we're really talking about? is that it's all about us? down to the nitty-gritty. >> well, yeah, it is. i think that at the end of the day we put so much effort into raising children. parents put so much effort into it that it's a reflection back on them that there is this kind of sense of hubris, this false pride that if they succeed we succeed. there's truth there and how are they going to perpetuate that and keep that going if they never learn how to fall down on occasion? >> that's the key, yeah. >> for a lot of parents, they feel like the stakes are too high. the landscape is so competitive, one misstep or one bad grading period may mean the difference between getting into college or not.

>> but that's the reality, isn't, it hoda? >> there's no way i could get into college right now. >> i think there's a difference, when kids are failing because their parents are meddling and preventing them from having that stumble. in other words, if they don't get an internship here at nbc, the mom might be calling and saying why didn't my kid get the internship? i think there's an extra added layer of what's going on here. >> i think when we step in and rescue we send a message that failing is bad. it should be avoided at all costs. but that's really short-term parenting. because they never -- if they don't let them do that, they never learn the resilience and hard work and perseverance that comes from failing. >> my dad used to say, forgive me for always quoting him, but he used to say i love you too much to deny you the privilege of making mistakes. which is an unbelievable thing to say. >> it is. and so powerful because the fact is you learned then how to tolerate disappointment. you learned how to persevere. you learned how to say -- >> be a gracious loser. >> you learned to be a gracious loser. and you also learned how to problem solve. the problem that i see a lot of

the times, especially in my practice, is parents who are too meddlesome, who swoop in and try to solve the problem is we're now raising a generation of kids who have no idea how to solve their problems. >> they're in for a rude awakening. >> what's happening is we have kids leaving college, not able to get out of high school. >> the dropout rate in college sun believable. >> don't you think for a lot of kids, if kids are involved in a lot of sports no matter if they're parents are pushing them most to succeed, they know as hard as they try in that basketball game no matter how much sweat they put into it they may lose the game. you're learning lessons in other places about, about failing, aren't you? >> you are. >> but i think you also have parents at times who call the coach and say, if you had played my child more, we would have won that game. >> there was a time for that, though, isn't there? there's a time for a parent to get much, much more involved. >> i think it depends on where the child is in the process. we want to let them fail, we want to let them make mistakes so they learn from it. however, if it's getting into a

situation where there's a health and safety issue for your child or somebody else or they're clearly beyond their capabilities, then you can kind of step in but do so in a way that's supportive and training them to get through it rather than making it all get better. >> let's pretend a kid is playing and they're not good at it and they don't like it. aren't they more likely to quit? shouldn't parents say, look, just hang in there, give it more time and see what's going on. >> you could. i would suggest setting a deadline. you committed to play for a season. the team is relying on you for a season. at the end of the season, let's evaluate what's going on and then you don't have to play again. when i was a kid, i didn't want to go to dance class and my mom said we paid for dance class, you're going to sit and watch for a little bit. and i sat and realized maybe i did want to do that. and i didn't want to. and i was pretty strong about it. so the fact was it was giving me a deadline saying we have to do it until this time and then you can reevaluate it. gives me a sense of empowerment. maybe i'll try harder. maybe i won't. but it keeps me involved in that. >> the truth is, if you get something you haven't deserved, you will never treat it with the respect and you'll never -- you

notice how temperatures stay in the 50s. that's why we're not going to see any winter weather this time around. 32 in minneapolis. and warming up across the southern states. especially back here into the desert southwest. we're going to see some warm temperatures in the next few days. and by tomorrow we're looking at quiet weather for the majority of the country with the exception of some lake effect snow showers coming back through, especially east of the lakes. we hold on to the 50s here. only 54 in atlanta. but temperatures will slowly climb by the end of the week and getting into the weekend. this is your thursday forecast. more snow showers around the lakes. not much warmer there. and the twin cities only in the 30s. drying out and cooling off by friday in the northeast but warming up for the south. and look at phoenix. 92 degrees your forecast on friday. time to hit the pools and find a way to cool off. on saturday most of the weather happens from the ohio valley into the northeast. it stays dry in the southeast. a rain-snow mix moving into the mountains of colorado. but for denver it's looking like all rain this time around.

temperatures in the 50s and 60s. louisville looking at some showers for the second half of the weekend. and this will be a storm to track as it moves through the ohio valley and northeast. still a ways out. but on monday something will be keeping an eye on with the threat for more rain and more snow showers in many states. remember, you can get the latest forecast weekday mornings on the weather channel.
