good morning. i'm kris sanchez. coming up on today in the bay, all eyes on a horse from california. the bay area's big winner at the kentucky derby. >> also a big bill after a pot party in golden gate park. how much it will cost taxpayers to clean it up. >> and a cool day to get yardwork done. there are showers in the forecast. rob will tell you when. this is today in the bay. and we're looking live from our camera in emeryville over at the city by the bay. a little cloud cover this morning. that was like pulling a blanket over and keeping the warm air

in. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with rob mayeda. not as chilly as yesterday. >> it's keeping the chetemperats up in the mid-50s, and waking up to the mid-50s around foster. mid-50s currently as you head to the east bay and trivalley. also patchy low clouds. final spot in the north bay, not too chilly. 46 in calistoga. 52 in novato. we have samixed bag of clouds. low clouds and high clouds. this outer ridge of low pressure that will give us possibly an isolated showers for areas around lake county northward of this afternoon. and showers in the forecast as we head to tomorrow and also into tuesday morning. today, we'll be looking at high temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s. turning breezy and actually

turning cooler as we get into monday afternoon. i'll have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. kris. >> the los angeles clippers have won game seven. >> and what a bummer morning for bay area sports fans. the golden state warriors lose the winner take all game seven clens the clippers. a few days after the sharks failed to beat the kings, the undermanned warriors tried their hand at sending the rivals home, and they gave a gritty effort. it was back and forth down the stretch, but godin state couldn't make enough shots to overcome an emotional clippers team and clippers kroutd. l.a. now moves on to the second round after a 126-121 win over the warriors. >> we took the lead, and they made their run. we battled back. so it just came down to the last few plays. they made the necessary plays,

maybe with an extra minute, to win the game. so i think we fought and fought, but when it all boiled down, they made the plays to win. >> the focus now turns to coach mark jackson. there has been speculation jackson would be parting ways with the team. some of the warriors players made it known they would like to see coach jackson return next season. big developments off the court as well. just three hours before tip-off, the nba announced they would appoint a new chief executive officer to supervise the clippers. the ceo appointment would happen quickly. they plbanned donald sterling f life after racially charged comments he's accused of making. three quarters of the owners must vote to do that. the league plans to hold more meetings next week. now to a developing story in the south bay. the teenager who survived a five and a half hour flight from san

jose to maui in a jet's wheel well is back at home. reports say on friday a judge transferred the boy out of the custody of the hawaii department of human services and into the custky of santa clara's department of family and children services. it was likely a social worker who escorted the teenager back to the south bay. the family is not talking as of yet. and new details this morning in the deadly freeway shooting on 580. authorities identifying the victim as 31-year-old deonta broussard of san francisco. it happened just before 1:00 in the afternoon yesterday on the eastbound lanes of 580. witnesses say they saw shots fired into the blue suv broussard was driving. he died at the scenes. they're hoping witnesses will come forward to provide a suspect description and a description of the vehicle. >> at this point, still a

preliminary investigation. we don't have a motive. our detectives are trying to determine what the motive might have been for this shooting. >> the chp shut down all of the eastbound lanes of traffic of 580 for several hours as they collected evidence. >> the search is on for a mystery woman who walked away after a fatality on the train tracks in richmond yesterday. it happened around 2:00 in the afternoon in cutting boulevard. a man and woman were walking together near the tracks. she made it across, but the man who was using a cane was struck and killed by the amtrak trin. the woman just kept walking. police don't know who she is or where she went. the victim's name has not been released. looks like a clothes dryer may have cost a palo alto family their home. a load of laundry turned into a three-alarm fire. and crews were called to assist. fire officials say the home belongs to former palo alto city

manager, frank benes. his daughter and a friend were inside at the time, but they got out safely. >> an elderly woman and her two dogs were rescued from the second home. a sunnyvale couple terrified inside their own home in broad daylight. a home invasion in the 1,000 block of syracuse. the victims, elderly. the robber took what he wanted at gun point. we're getting a suspect description from police this morning. a hispanic male between 35 and 40 years of age, 5'7", average build, wearing full beard. a memorial continues to grow in san jose after a high school student was killed in a car crash. the victim's name has not been officially released, but we know she was a student at wilcox high school. she was a passenger in the vehicle. the driver, a 17-year-old boy,

hit a traffic signal pole. the two teens were reportedly headed to a friend's house. police say they don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors, but they believe the teen driver may have been speeding and possibly ran a red light. >> police in san francisco looking for a hit and run drive who killed a man this weekend. the driver sped through a red light, broadsided one car and slammed into another one. then he ran from the scene. police were able to talk to one person in the car. the identify of the victim has not been released. >> still ahead, a horse from california wins the kentucky derby. coming up, the connection california chrome has to the bay ar area. >> plus, hundreds turn up trying to get a job at tesla, but most are turned away, and not because they weren't qualified. also, golden gate park was filled with thousands of marijuana smokers last month, and now the city is getting a big bill. how much it cost to clean up the

good morning to you. looking live at dublin this morning, and some of those clouds keeping the temperatures mild this morning, but we'll be cool this afternoon, and here we are looking live at the bay from inside at&t park. sometimes folks go for baseball, sometimes to watch the water. >> and the kentucky derby. >> california chrome, a california horse in the spotlight at the kentucky derby, humble bay area beginnings, though, for the stallion now taking the horse racing world by storm. for the first time in half a century, a horse from california won the kentucky derby, and you saw it right here on nbc bay area. california chrome is putting a shine now on the golden state's horse racing industry. mark matthews went to golden gate field where chrome's

trainer got his start. >> california chrome broke out of the gate, never seemed to strain, and when he rounded the far turn, the jockey slowly pulled away from the rest of the pack. the race never in doubt. one of chrome's co-owners lived here in uba city. in that town's watering holes today, they were cheering him on. the trainer says the win kind of settles a score with some of the blue-blood breeders back east. >> they always make us feel like we are lesser because we're out here on the west coast in california. >> we heard that from more than just one trainer here. it must have had a little to do with the other co-owner steve coburn saying this. >> all i got to say is do you nonbelievers believe this horse now and believe this man can train a horse? if you don't, you need your head examined. >> a trip there? understandable considering when they paid the $8,000 for the

horse, they said -- >> well, you are a bunch of dumb [ bleep ] if you buy this horse. they said, what a great name for our stable. dumb [ bleep ] partners racing. >> he figures from now on the kentucky and florida blereeders will have to give them some respect. >> it makes you proud if you live here in california to see the horse do exactly what he did to the california breds in san anita, but he did it there in kentucky on the biggest stage in the world. >> nice to see the underdog get a win, right? more than $100,000 is what a marijuana party cost the city of san francisco last month. reports say at least 15,000 people attended the annual 420 event, which celebrates pot smoking culture.

gathers say they saw extra police and the officers came at a price tag of $43,000. while extra transit staff, fare inspectors and parking officers cost $36,000. and then there was the clean-up. park workers collected 20,000 tons of trash and that cost $23,000. about a dozen people were arrested at the gathering. the tesla job fair that had more job candidates than expected. hundreds of people showed up at the factory, and a company spokeswoman said they wrapped up after two hours because of all the traffic it generated in the area. police were worried what might happen. one woman's car broke down before she had a chance to drop off her resume. >> people go through a lot to try to work out here. and you know the circumstances people have to go through, like yeah, i knew my car was acting up, but i would do anything to get a job. >> tesla is still accepting

happy sunday to you. looking live at oakland this morning. looking a little gloomy. maybe feeling gloomy after the golden state warriors fell to the clippers last night. over to palo alto, just about the same kind of picture. the school district is doing an experiment. they're trying out 3-d virtual reality in the classroom. it's a pilot program to find out if studying 3-d images can help students learn. it's about the abcs and the

123-ds in this morning's class action. >> the lab at gardner bullets elementary school in los altos is the site of an unusual project. >> these are some of the body parts of the dolphin. >> these kids are among the first in the country to use a new 3-d educational display. >> really amazing. >> the school district is doing a pilot program to test this, a learning tool that uses glasses and a stylus to create an immersive educational experience. >> it's actually like haven't imagined it before. i never knew technology was this advanced. >> i tell them to turn their hand and see it. some jump back in excitement at what they can explore. >> the sixth graders are using d-space to make presentations about marine life to their first

grade class buddies. >> and can hold their breath for 13 minutes. >> they couldn't believe there was an actual lobster in front of them. my buddies actually tried to touch it. >> four cameras. >> the system tracks the user's glasses and generates a realtime 2-d display of the student's 3-d experience. >> when computers came along, we stopped interacting facially and started looking at things that were stuck to a screen or behind a screen. with this, the barrier is removed. >> isn't it so real you can hold it? >> it feels like you're kind of picking up the actual fish and taking it apart. it peels like you're right there with the animal or whatever you're taking apart. >> the district doesn't know definitively yet if the technology improves learning, but early signs point to success. >> a lot will come in at lunch and use it on their own time and they're finding tons of

different things they can explore that they never even knew they were interested in. >> one thing is certain, the kids are excited to learn. >> aren't those awesome? >> as for the cost, the set-up can cost from $25,000 to $50,000, so it might be pricey for some school districts. we should mention, too, that it's not just for k-12 schools. it's also used at ucsf and stanford for research and education. >> in the south bay, thousands of people turned out to raise money and awareness for autism. i was lucky enough to mc the event. walk now for autism, which was held at kelly park in san jose yesterday morning. it's one of the largest annual events that autism speaks puts on to raise awareness about autism that effects 1 in 68 people. an estimated 7,000 people participated in the walk, including san jose councilwoman.

i was so happy it was cool. had it been 90 degrees, i would have wilted. >> that would have been uncomfortable. the weather was great for outdoor activities. and today, you're going to see about the same thing. interesting views, looking off to downtown, san jose, clouds drifting by from left to right. 55 degrees right now in san jose where you have the clouds. san francisco, kind of interesting, two layers of clouds. low clouds out in the distance, the sea breeze moving the flag, and also high clouds coming in on top of the low cloud deck, hinting we have changes coming up in the forecast as we go through the next two to three days. now, the onshore wind, that hasn't changed. maybe not quite as gusty as yesterday afternoon. as for the arrows pointing on shore, we'll see another cool day and possibly a stray shower or two around the hilltop locations around the mountains and more around lake county for

this afternoon, and more clouds starting to come in. those will be high clouds out ahead of a chance of a few showers coming our way late tomorrow and tuesday. for monday afternoon into tuesday morning, we're going to have a fairly dry system drop in and over us, mainly over interior northern california. but with the cool air aloft, the heating below, that will be the stabilizing atmosphere and perhaps give us a chance of seeing a few showers. a few sprinkles possible at times. into tomorrow morning for the coastal hills. here's an area we'll watch for tomorrow afternoon. notice the cloud cover and moisture dipping to the south, overnight monday into tuesday morning, clouds in the south bay and maybe a brief shower on the coast and skies begin to clear tuesday and we will see a mostly sunny day for tuesday afternoon, but cool and blustery conditions. rain totals, again, not enough really to fill up any rain gauges around the bay area. maybe briefly enough to wet the

ground at times. stray showers, not widespread rain. better chance of seeing more measurable rain to the north and east around sacramento and heading to the sierra. later in the week, the warm-up we were hoping for probably not going to get as hot. maybe that's good news that we're not going to see 80s and 90s. thursday, another system going by may top parts of the north bay. now the high doesn't look that strong. temperatures should be warmer a little bit towards thursday and friday. as we get to next weekend, that's when we should see the highs in the 80s. today around the bay area, low 70s around the south bay and san jose. san francisco in the low to mid-60s. for the north bay, upper 60s to near 70. east bay, near 70 near oakland. we should see temperatures in the low 70s, and livermore, the wine country festival, should be gorgeous, breezy and comfortable

with highs in the low 70s. cool start to the week is going to last longer, through wednesday, temperatures coming on up, but the timeframe to watch, monday into tuesday with brief showers and the wind. they'll turn gusty monday night. 15 to 30 miles per hour, so watch out for the cool air, gusty conditions into early tuesday, and the we start to warm up thursday into friday. >> thank you very much, rob. coming up on today in the bay -- >> it's a real thing that affected real people and real lives and real jobs. >> the unique way a stanford law professor is turning real life struggles into teachable moments. it's part of our bay area proud series.

garvan thomas has more. >> if you have ever taken the university avenue exit off 101, you have likely discovered there's more than just a highway separating palo alto and east palo alto. at times, the green lawns of stanford university to the west seem a world away from the working class streets to the east. except, that is, on this street. in this building. >> are you going to have a chance to talk to the police officer? >> juliet is a stanford law professor and director of the stanford community clinic, quite intentionally located off campus and east of 101. east quarter, she takes on a team of law students who take on no other courses. they work here 9:00 to 5:00, sometimes more, representing residents of east palo alto who could otherwise never dream of hiring a lawyer. in the ten years the clinic has been up and running, they have represented 1500 clients, never

asking a penny in return. >> we joke that the clients, i mean, it's really no joke, but the clients of the clinic, they're lottery winners. >> juliet closely supervises her students as they handle the clients' cases. evictions, back wages, make up most of the case load. the students getting real-life courtroom experience as lawyers, learning to deal with clients, judges, opposing counsel, but most of all, learning that the law is not just something written in a book. >> law is a real thing. it affects real people and real lives and real jobs and real apartments. >> it really is personally affecting someone's life. >> grace took the course last semester. like many of her classmates, she will one day be arguing cases considered much bigger. what juliet wants all of them to remember, though, is it doesn't mean they're any more important. still ahead on today in the

good morning, and happy sunday to you, looking live at foster city this morning. we are seeing the sunshine breaking through the clouds this morning. and over at the bay bridge, pretty clear there as well. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with rob mayeda who has a forecast that maybe has a little sprinkle in it. >> we could underneath some of the low clouds see a few sprinkles out there, especially around the coastal mountains. right now, thanks to the low clouds, not too chilly. upper 50s in san francisco. 55 in san jose. on shore winds will insure another fairly cool day.

but what we're watching is more moisture coming in. you can see the rain in the pacific northwest. we're getting the outer fringe into the bay area this morning in the form of high clouds coming in. during the day, you'll see not only the patches of low clouds, but mid-to high level clouds approaching. 50s outside right now. as you move through the afternoon, we'll see temperatures close to 71 in san jose. 63 in san francisco. low 70s out toward livermore, and perhaps a better chance of showers by tomorrow afternoon, especially towards the north bay. we'll have a look at that in a few minutes. the losngeles clippers have won game seven. >> and bay area sports fans left wanting this morning as the golden state warriors lose the win or take all game seven against the l.a. clippers. they lost on the hardwood a few days after the sharks lost on the ice, also to rivals from the south, the l.a. kings. but the warriors give a grittier effort against the clippers, and it was a back and forth game

girls has been getting support on twitter as well. and secretary of state john kerry said the u.s. will do everything possible to find the girls and free them. >> let me be clear. the kidnapping of hundreds of children is an unconscionable crime, and we'll do everything possible to support the nigerian government to return these young women to their homes and to hold the perpetrators to justice. >> kerry made that comment while addressing a youth conference in the ethiopian capital. >> the first openly gay bishop in the ank lucon church is divorcing his husband. gene robinson made that announcement in an e-mail to the diocese of new hampshire this weekend. they entered into a civil union in 2008 which converted to a marriage in 2010. robinson's election in 2003 as the first openly gay bishop gained international attention and led many conservative

episcupallians to break away from the main church in the united states. >> california's department of motor vehicles is working out the details that will eventually let illegal immigrants apply for driver's licenses. the dmv is designing the licenses so they can't be confused with other state and identification cards. they will only give undocumented immigrants driving privileges. they still won't be able to vote, get into federal buildings or board airplanes with those. they want undocumented immigrants to know that applying for the ids won't result in them getting sent back to their country of origin. >> there are concerns and they want to make sure, if i go into a dmv office, am i going to be sent back to the country i'm from? that's not going to happen. >> they say they're expecting more than a million applications once the new immigrant licensing programs kick off next year. >> the number of children in the

u.s. diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes spiked significantly in the last decade. from 2001 to 2009, the number of children with insulin dependent type 1 diabetes went up 20%. children afflicted with type 2 diabetes went up 30%. researchers can't explain it. a spike in childhood obesity may explain some of the type 2 cases, but researchers say children with these diseases enter adulthood with significant health risks. >> several warnings issued in the past, but now the world health organization is taking it to the next level. the nim tie you use antibiotics, they might make you vulnerable instead. an infection could kill you. >> the more we use antibiotics, the more resistant the bacteria becomes. >> overusing antibiotics can help create superbugs, but

doctors prescribed them for everything from an ear infection to a blood stream infection. they're declaring this an immediate global health threat. at the uc berkeley school of public health, this doctor said exposure to antibiotics and drug resistant bacteria is part of our world. >> globalization of tourism, trade, food trade, as well as what's called medical tourism. >> the who says superbugs threaten the achievement of modern medicine, pushing us to a post post-medicine era. >> many infections, a common infection that almost all women get at some point in their life, are beginning to be caused by these drug resistant e. coli. >> if the infection reaches the blood stream, patients can die. while health organizations warn

maybe not. it's quiet right now. going to stay that way as far as sporting events are concerned. unfortunately, we'll have to wait until next season to catch a warriors game after a tough game seven loss against the clippers last night. still a loud crowd, though. the baseball season may be over, but baseball season just getting rolling for the two bay area teams. we take you first to turner field where the giants take on the braves. top of the fourth, game tied at 1-1, and not anymore. buster posey goes deep to give san francisco a 2-1 lead. then in the seventh, michael orr hits his eighth long ball of the year, tying him for the team lead. giants win it 3-1. and let's head to boston now. game two between the a's and red sox. so far, it's all been red sox. jonny gomes hits a first inning grand slam. the second grand slam of the series for boston. that was plenty for jon lester, the pitcher had a career high 15

the nation is watching the congressional race between incumbent mike honda and challenger rokana. in their first debate, they talked about everything from climate change, immigration reform and equal pay to immigration and campaign finance. they also addressed the importance of affordable housing in the bay area. >> looking at mixed housing, mixed zoning where you can have a variety of folks with different income levels. live in a neighborhood, and i guess it's about re-creating and redefining what a neighborhood looks like. >> the reality is we run the risk of having communities where teachers, firefighters, police, nurses, can't live in the very communities that they serve. >> they seem to agree on most topics, so the biggest news was congressman honda accepting the

debate invitation. they'll do that after the june 3rd primary elections. >> smoking marijuana recreationally, people are legally lighting up across colorado and just in a few months, a similar scene will likely play out in washington state. advocates for decriminalizing marijuana said ten more states could join them by 2015. california is one of them. critics argue that legalizing pot raises crime. today in the bay, sam looks at number to see what has unfolded in colorado so far in this morning's reality check. >> marijuana. >> but in the run-up to colorado's 2012 vote and after, critics say marijuana's link to criminal activity wouldn't be so sweet, claiming that overall crime would rise and legalization of marijuana would change denver. its own mayor even worried about an uptick in crime, robberies and intrusions. several months in, has crime actually gone up? well, denver's home to the bulk of recreational pot sellers, and

so far, according to that city's police department, crime hasn't risen since the law went into effect on january 1. in fact, it's gone down. in the first three months of 2014, denver pd reports of violent crime sank 6.9% compared to the year before. property crime went down more than 11%. the stats have forced one local critic to rethink some of his concerns. >> i was wrong. i thought there would be an increase of out of staters coming in and causing personal crimes. so listen, i hope it continues to go down. what law enforcement officer would ever want crime to go up? >> but he still worries drug related duis will go up and he's not alone. >> former california police chief association president kim rainy testifying before state lawmakers about california's medical marijuana law said for him, a rise in duis was always

his biggest concern. >> from a safety standpoint, we worry about marijuana and the increase of drug drivers on the highway. in the first three months, colorado has seen an increase. >> it turns out that claim is true, but the numbers don't pop out, at least not yet. from january 1st to april 19th, there were 17 marijuana related duis in kdenver, compared to 11 over the same timeframe last year. >> i predict it's going to continue to increase because law enforcement is trying to catch up to the training necessary to get a driving under the influence of marijuana. >> that was sam brock reporting. marijuana duis in denver are up 55%, but in reality, that's just six extra duis. the following months will be more telling as law enforcement improves its methods for testing and regulated drugged drivers. in the meantime, claims that the

good sunday morning to you. we're seeing low clouds and also high clouds moving over the bay area right now, in an interesting mix of both right now in san jose. 55 degrees. sun breaking through some of the clouds there, and an interesting view looking over to san francisco. you can see, well, the upper half of the tower above the low clouds and high clouds moving in, too. both will help to filter out the sun at times. another fairly cool afternoon today if the onshore winds are an all-day event.

the wind speeds are fairly light. from 3:00 to 7:00, we'll see the wind speeds picking up again and rapidly cooling places off. even the trivalley seeing highs today close to 70 degrees as the winds pick up later in the afternoon. patches of clouds for the morning. a chance of a stray shower, maybe on the hilltops. better chance coming up tomorrow, and clouds on the increase as we head into the night. monday, we will have to watch the weather system that will drop mainly over interior california, that will bring us a chance of some showers into the north bay monday afternoon. then eventually crossing into the south bay very early tuesday mou morning. another component will be gusty northwest winds picking up. you'll notice those winds tomorrow night into tuesday morning. you can see here how most of the moisture is over the sierra for monday and tuesday. as you wrap up the weekend, cool finish, and then as we head into monday afternoon, one area to watch is the north bay hilltops towards sonoma county, napa county, and solano county.

the first chance of seeing showers, then the system drops to the south bringing the bands of clouds from north to south, and that could give us a slight chance of seeing a shower. rain totals not expected to be much. barely hitting the ground. just enough, basically, to wet the roads around santa rosa. less than .05 inch of rain, but you may need an umbrella briefly. maybe monday afternoon, and if you head to sacramento and the sierra, a bigger impact will be off to the north and east. temperatures behind the system trending even cooler as we take you back through the work week, and the seven-day forecast, into thursday, running cooler. watch what happens. thursday, another system that could bring a slight chance of light rain. even if we don't see the rain, it's going to prevent high pressure from building back as strongly as we were thinking 24 hours ago. as we head to next weekend, that's when high pressure will build in. you should see the highest
