good morning. growing alarm. government scientists step up their investigation of the mers virus after it spread from person to person here in the u.s. for the very first time. her turn. ousted "new york times" editor jill abramson makes her first public comments today after her abrupt firing, while her former boss takes a new shot at her, denying that move was motivated by sexism. boneheaded decision. what the man who spurred nationwide outrage for kicking his own son down a skateboard ramp is now saying in an exclusive interview. >> it was an effort to help him, but it didn't come across that way. >> what that split-second decision cost his family.

his music and his moves still so relevant today. we have a top story to get to, this new concern over the mers virus after a third infection is discovered here in the u.s. nbc's tom costello has got the story from washington this morning. tom, good morning. >> hi, savannah, good morning. investigators are looking closely at anyone who may have come in contact with the two men who became ill after traveling to saudi arabia, and now a third man, who has shown he has the antibodies for the virus after meeting one of the infected men. health investigators believe it was several business handshakes over two days that spread the mers virus from one person to another here in the u.s. an illinois man became infected after shaking hands with a health care worker from indiana, who had just returned from saudi arabia. the indiana man was later hospitalized with the first known case of the virus in the u.s. but the illinois man's illness is not severe. >> we know this person has antibodies for mers, which means he was infected, does not mean he's infectious.

that's the fine line. that's the difference. >> the man reported mild cold-like symptoms, but he's no longer sick. he's been asked to isolate himself from others for now. still, the mers virus is especially concerning to health experts who watched it spread from saudi arabia through the middle east, and on to include 18 countries. worldwide, 572 confirmed cases, 173 people have died. 30% of the known cases. now it's turned up in the u.s. >> right now we know that it could be transmitted inefficiently from person to person, because health care workers in the hospital and people in close contact with patients have been infected. >> at a dozen airports nationwide, health notices now warn fliers to be aware of other passengers who might be sick. the most common symptoms that show up after 14 days, a fever, a cough, severe respiratory illness that can include shortness of breath. u.s. experts are urging caution,

but not overreaction. >> it's not something that one should be overly concerned about, but you have to stay tuned because you have to follow it because it might be a moving target. >> and tom, it's interesting that some of these patients apparently have no symptoms, but they're carrying the antibodies, which raises the question of whether there may be people who are walking around with these antibodies not even knowing it. >> yeah, it's a very real possibility. about 20% of the patients are asymptomatic or symptoms are so mild, or they didn't realize they had the virus, so the number of cases may start to rise. experts do not believe the virus is highly contagious. most of those who have been ill have been in the middle east, family members and health care workers as well. >> tom costello with the latest from washington. thank you. natalie is here with some breaking news. a first, natalie, from the u.s. department of justice. >> that's right and good morning guys. an unprecedented slap on the wrist from the justice department this morning. the u.s. is accusing some chinese government officials of cyber spying on american companies. nbc news justice correspondent

pete williams is in washington this morning with the details. pete, good morning. >> good morning. a u.s. official says the justice department has filed criminal charges against specific chinese government officials, accusing them of stealing american trade secrets through cyber espionage. this is the first time that the u.s. has brought cyber espionage charges against a state actor. details of the charges are to be announced later today by the attorney general eric holder, but an official familiar with the case says the charges will accuse chinese government employees of using military and intelligence facilities to commit cyber espionage against u.s. companies. the obama administration has long considered china the most aggressive nation in getting industrial secrets through spying. in a 2011 report, the national counterintelligence executive called the chinese the world's most active and persistent perpetrators of economic espionage. the names of the targeted companies involved with these new charges could not immediately be determined, but they were said to be in the energy and manufacturing sectors.

natalie? >> all right, pete williams in washington. thanks so much, pete. we go now to northern nigeria where a suicide bomb blast in the city of kano has killed four people. the area has been targeted by boko haram militants in the past, the group responsible for the kidnappings of more than 200 girls last month. it is a case, of course, that shocked the world and one that nbc's stephanie gosk has been following for us. stephanie is in cameroon with the very latest. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. we are in cameroon's far north, about 20 miles from the nigerian border. they are looking for the schoolgirls here, too, and dealing with the fallout from a deadly insurgency. truck after truck, over 370 refugees showed up in this camp in cameroon in a single day. since the schoolgirls were kidnapped, the violence in nigeria is getting worse. just over a week ago, boko haram gunman attacked sentiki's village. the 14-year-old tells us she escaped out her bedroom window but was split from her family as

she ran for her life. an aid worker spotted her when she arrived. she was alone? >> yes, absolutely. >> ali understood because he ran from boko haram, too. >> they killed one of your brothers? >> yes. >> reporter: cameroon is only a relatively safe haven. boko haram crosses the border easily here. they re-group, re-arm and sometimes attack. the government has increased the number of troops. these special forces have been getting intense training for a couple of years now, and they say that there are a half a dozen u.s. military personnel in a nearby city that have been training them in things like urban warfare and close quarter combat. all skills they will need to fight an enemy both violent and elusive. the theory that the girls were taken over the border, we were up on the border here in cameroon, and i can tell you there are places where you literally can cross, no border guards, no passport needed. natalie? >> stephanie gosk in cameroon, thank you, stephanie. another megamerger is in the

works that could change the future of television. at&t has agreed to buy directv for $48.5 billion. the move would give at&t a bigger subscriber base and it would give it a fighting chance against comcast and time warner cable, which agreed to join forces in february. the at&t deal is subject to government review. and finally, an underwater face-off between a diver and a great white shark in florida. take a look at this incredible video. jimmy roseman was diving in the water 90 feet deep off the atlantic coast when that great white started moving in on him. roseman said the great white looks like it's far away in the video, but actually was about six to seven feet away from him. the gopro camera on the diver's helmet capturing the tense encounter. as the shark continues to circle right back toward him, roseman finally poked the shark with a spear gun. the great white did eventually swim off, and unharmed. >> so objects in the water may be closer than they appear.

and that thing was frighteningly large. >> don't play music while you're under water. it attracts. >> the "jaws" theme in particular. not a good choice. >> it goes on for like two and a half minutes. >> we'll catch the weather in a moment, but first the controversy surrounding the firing of "new york times" executive editor jill abramson. it is heating up. she gives the addressment address at the wake forest commencement this weekend. the paper's publisher released a scathing statement over the weekend explaining why she was ousted and denying it was motivated by sexism. it's the first time she's speaking publicly since she was fired last week. nbc's rehema ellis is in winston-salem, north carolina with us this morning. >> reporter: this is the first time we'll hear from jill abramson after her public dispute with the "times." you can be sure the graduates we're at wake forest weren't the only ones paying attention to

her speech. >> very early last thursday, my sister called me. i know dad would be as proud of you today as the day you became executive editor of "the new york times." it meant more to our father to see us deal with the setback and try to bounce back than to watch how we handled our successes. show what you are made of, he would say. >> reporter: at the first female executive editor of "the new york times," jill abramson was a media star. but she was abruptly fired last week after less than three years in the position. soon afterwards, her daughter posted this picture on instagram of her 60-year-old mom looking ready to fight with the #pushy. stories allege abramson was let go because she raised concerns about whether she was paid as much as her male predecessors. responding to a growing controversy, publisher arthur sulzberger released a statement over the weekend, detailing the reasons for abramson's firing

and disputing any notion it was over her pay package. sulzberger said, abramson's management of the newsroom was simply not working out. "i heard repeatedly from her newsroom colleagues, women and men, about a series of issues, including arbitrary decision-making, a failure to consult and bring colleagues with her, inadequate communication and the public mistreatment of colleagues." her firing sparked a heated debate about whether women are held to a different standard than men. this story is far from over. whatever the truth is, jill abramson's firing has reignited a conversation all across the country about the role of women leadership in the workplace. willie. >> rehema ellis, thank you so much. kate brightman is the former editor of "new yorker" magazine.

it's good to have you here. is this a story about gender or about her management? >> i think it is both. we are not judged on how we do with sales, but how we deal with people. women are held to a different standard. guys are being no nonsense. women are brought. we are held to a different standard. >> you use the term brusque. the words used to describe jill are pushy and mercurial. some women feel those are words that describe qualities that if they were found in men wouldn't have those pejorative terms applied to them. >> it's the absolute truth. if you think about some of the editors, executive editors of

you have to be aware of dissension. that can bite you in the butt. >> why has this story taken a life of its own? it is a larger story. what is it about this case? >> i think women know on a viceral level, we know this goes on. it is an underground thing. it is hard to put your finger on it. >> some suggest she was underpaid. the teams fought back saying she made 10% more than her predecessor. i know you worked for "the times," but what was it like for you moving up the chain to go in and ask for a raise? >> i brought my accountant in with me. i got so much more. women have to learn. you have to ask. you have to ask at the front end.

she tried to ask at the back end. that is like returning the pants after you wore them. >> what lessons, kate, do you hope people take out of the story? >> i think the first thing to know it happens. let's not pretend it doesn't. we are judged differently in many situations. you have to listen and pay attention. you have to have allies and be sure people working for you have your back and you know if they are uncomfortable. >> kate white, we appreciate your perspective. you have been from. savannah. a graduation ceremony in connecticut had to be put on hold temporarily sunday while police dealt with several bomb threats, and you will never guess where investigators say those threats were coming from. audrey washington from wvit, our nbc station in connecticut, is outside quinnipiac university. audrey, good morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. that college graduation ceremony was postponed on sunday after the university received multiple bomb threats. now this morning, a woman is in police custody after confessing

to making those calls, and just why she did it may surprise you. it's a graduation ceremony quinnipiac students and their families won't soon forget. >> we were all pretty much lined up ready to go and we started hearing that there was going to be some sort of delay. >> reporter: just 20 minutes before students lined up to receive their degrees, local police say someone called in a bomb threat. >> the threats were made against the university. one building was specifically referenced. >> reporter: according to police, a woman called claiming there was a bomb in the library. 15 minutes later, a second call, saying, "several bombs are on campus. you haven't cleared out graduation. that's not a good idea." over 425 students and their guests were relocated as a precaution. >> the world we live in, i guess today, and fortunately we have good people that keep us safe. >> reporter: officials were able to trace the phone number back to 22-year-old danielle shea, a former quinnipiac student. police found her at the ceremony

dressed in a cap and gown. shea confessed to the calls, telling police she lied to her family about attending the school this year. she hoped the threats would force the school to cancel the ceremony so she wouldn't have to explain why she didn't get a diploma. for those who did, the ceremony went on without a hitch. >> overall, the school handled it really well and they got us up there and got the graduation going, so we were all happy once we finally started the ceremony. >> reporter: and according to police, shea is charged with threatening in the first degree and falsely reporting an incident. she's currently being held on $20,000 bond and is set to appear in court later on this month. and i guess the moral of the story here is kids, stay in school. that's the very latest. i'm audrey washington reporting here from quinnipiac university. i'll send it back over to you, willie and savannah. >> that is just a wild story. i'm glad everybody got their diploma at the end of the day. audrey washington up in connecticut for us.

thanks, audrey. now we move to a controversy in horse racing. it's threatening california chrome's historic quest for the triple crown. as you know, the colt won the preakness on saturday, two weeks after winning the kentucky derby. but now his trainer is raising the possibility that the horse may not run in the triple crown's final leg. nbc's craig melvin is here to explain that. craig, good morning. >> savannah, good morning to you. here's what's causing this controversy. it's called a flare strip. they're like breathe right strips for horses. california chrome has won the last six races wearing one of these things. but thoroughbred horse racing officials in new york where the belmont is held do not allow them. >> california chrome has won the preakness! >> california chrome, the crowd favorite saturday, thundered to victory at preakness stakes, snagging the second jewel in horseracing's coveted triple crown. no thoroughbred has won the kentucky derby, preakness, and belmont stakes since affirmed in

1978. >> affirmed coming to the wire! >> but while chrome went to sleep a champion, he woke up to controversy. turns out the breathing strip the horse wore in the last six races he's won is forbidden by the new york state gaming commission. now his trainer art sherman says all bets may be off. "i don't know why they would ban you from wearing one," he said. "he might not run if they say you can't run with a nasal strip." the makers of the strips say they don't help much anyway. >> all the strips do is put a little force to hold that open and reduces the resistance. they get the same amount of air with less work. >> chrome's team formally asked for permission to wear the strips. officials are reportedly considering a rule change. the controversy threatens to ruin what many hoped would be a happy ending to a rags to riches story. steve coburn and his partner spent $8,000 on the mare that produced chrome. chump change in the world of horseracing.

>> when i saw this colt, when i saw this baby when he was a day old, i told my wife, i said carolyn, this horse is going to do something big. >> the issue of nasal strips came up again back in 2012. i'll have another also won the first two legs of the triple crown, but before new york officials could decide on whether that horse would be allowed to wear one of these, the horse was pulled because of an injury. a decision on chrome's future is expected as early as tomorrow, savannah. >> all right, craig melvin, thank you very much. and we turn to al -- >> whoa. you're not getting off that easy. first of all, common sense will prevail. let the horse run for the triple crown. but as we had the banner up at the bottom. it said nasal strip puts triple crown in doubt. savannah saw this headline and wondered who this young horse nasal strip was. where, she wondered, did they come up with these names? >> why do these horse owners name their horse nasal strip? here comes nasal strip down the bend. >> nasal strip by a nose!

good morning to you, it is 7:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. a bay area mother facing child abuse charges this morning accused of attacking a boy she said was bullying her daughter. delia garcia-bratcher walked up to school during lunch on friday and she didn't check in and told her daughter to point out the boy who had been bothering her and then garcia-bratcher grabbed the boy by the throat and threatened him in front of a bunch of kids. deputies arrested her and are looking into the bullying allegations. waiting to learn the identity of a hiker found dead after falling from a large rock in the berkeley hills. the apparent accident happened on uc berkeley property near

watch. >> that was my poor attempt at trying to help him overcome his fear. >> reporter: now marcus crossland and his wife emily have broken their silence, speaking out for the first time since this video of their 6-year-old son being pushed down a 13-foot ramp by his father went viral. >> it was an effort to help him, but it didn't come across that way. >> reporter: and he says he's sorry. >> sorry that i made that decision to use that tactic as opposed to another. sorry for the outcome because of a decision i made, my wife and my children and everybody's got to deal with it. >> the simplest words, i was upset. >> reporter: emily says she was surprised when she first saw the video and she doesn't in any way condone what her husband did, but she says what happened after angered her. >> you can be the most amazing, kindhearted, giving person in the world. all it takes is that two seconds and people will hate you. >> reporter: as a result of the video, florida's child welfare

become a big situation. but when it comes down to it, he's doing wonderful and he's -- you know, he's happy and he's healthy and he's doing great. >> we just heard in the report that you all are planning to move. i understand marcus says he lost his job because of this. we reached out to his employer, they couldn't confirm exactly why he lost his job, but describe for me what the last few weeks have been like for you as a family. >> it's been really rough. we've had to -- well, as a mother, i've had to do what i can to keep my child safe and protected from the media. i mean, everybody was coming to our home. we ended up losing a babysitter. not only did my husband lose his job, i wasn't able to work. so things have been turned upside down incredibly. and it's been hard. >> you know, emily, marcus says this piece of video, this brief clip that we've all seen on vine now, was taken out of context. but it's hard to imagine any context where that kick is okay. how does he explain it?

is there something more we should know about what happened that day? >> nothing beyond what you've already been told. as i said in the interview, things like that are definitely not acceptable in our household, and we do not do anything like that. i go skateboarding with him every time, and the only reason i wasn't there that day, i was at work. not that that excuses anything, by any means. but, you know, nothing like that has ever happened before, so there isn't anything beyond closed doors or any kind of actions that have been taken anything like that. so it's definitely easy to take it out of context for sure. >> and quickly, emily, before i let you go, this little piece of video is all most of us know about your husband. what kind of dad is he? what do you want the world to know about him? >> he's a really great dad. he loves his children. he loves his family. he's a hard worker. and he's an all around good person. you know, beyond that, we love

people who appear to be sick. evacuation orders have been lifted after a week of fires in southern california. at least 47 homes were destroyed and one person killed. normal operations are also resuming today at the camp pendelton marine corps base where three fires burned 22,000 acres. while the worst of this operation is apparently over, fire crews don't expect much of a break because of continuing fire conditions. we're now learning that preakness winner california chrome will be able to wear a nasal trip when he makes his scheduled run for the triple crown. the new york racing association the okay to wear the nasal strip. new york was the only state that had not allowed the use of strips. the spacex dragon cargo station splashed down into the ocean after dragon undocked earlier sunday for its five-hour trip back to earth.

with more. good morning. >> good morning, willie. after looking at the statistics, officials from the centers for disease control estimated some 10,000 toddlers, that's age 2 and 3 across the country, are being given drugs like ridilin and adderall, medications well outside the accepted practice for children so young. visit any playground and you're likely to see some high energy kids. >> i mean, they are just full of energy. they want to touch and grab everything. >> reporter: but according to the centers for disease control, thousands of active toddlers are being diagnosed as hyperactive. with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. and given medications usually prescribed to older children. >> i don't get how you diagnose somebody. if they're hyper and all over the place, you probably have a 2-year-old. >> reporter: the american academy of pediatrics guidelines don't even address adhd

diagnosis in children under 4. but the data showed thousands of children, especially those on medicaid, are being given medications like ritalin and the amphetamine adderall. doctors say they can stunt growth or cause insomnia and loss of appetite, even in older children. >> we're giving adderall to 2-year-olds? i mean, that's nuts! there's no evidence that it works. there's no evidence that it's safe. these are desperate measures. >> the cdc estimated that by 2011, more than one in ten children between 4 and 17 years old had been diagnosed with adhd, and one in five boys will be. >> we are 4% of the world's population, and we use 70% of the world's adderall and ritalin. that says something right there. >> some doctors say medications might be a last resort when toddlers might harm themselves, but for others, 2 is simply too young.

>> there's great advice in the book. you decided willy needed a rugged, outdoor adventure at camp. >> we wanted him to go up to new england, pristine lake, pine trees and all that. we did due diligence. we went to the expo center with a camp show of 200 camps. we found the perfect place. >> they dropped me off at this camp. on paper it's a beautiful place. i'm sure it is. what wasn't in the fine print when the guy told us about the services there. the counselors, many of them, were reformed delinquents. this was part of their program to go be counselors and reflect on what they'd done. that led to gang fights. there were tires slashed in the parking lot. at one point there was a bacterial disease going on at camp. they stripped us down and lined up against the wall and shot us with a hose. it was something out of shaw

>> again, through my kids. they were raving about family guy. i got to meet him when he hosted the academy awards last year. it was interesting watching him on set. he is -- he puts you in mind of what a young orson wells must have been like wearing many hats as a producer, writer, actor. i just got a sense of what that wells character may have been like when he was 25 or 26. >> you thought at one point you were so busy doing the film someone was handing him food and he was eating it. >> his lovely chef vikki would prepare food for him. he would be looking at the monitor groping for the food. he didn't have time to look what he was eating. he trusted she was presenting him with the right food. >> liam neeson, such a pleasure.

take a look at what happened. ♪ she danced with all the men ♪ >> the hologram was nearly a half year planning. this went down to the wire. a lawsuit, with this innovative technology, they believe it belongs to them. a judge said on friday the show must go on. so billboard producers breathing a sigh of relief with that big moment. but i saw the michael jackson show at mandalay bay, which also uses a digital image of him. breathtaking. not since i saw "this is it" had i been so moved bay michael jackson moment. it's huge. >> i guess i get why some people think it's creepy. i just think any time you can get michael jackson, i'll take it. he was dancing the way he danced. i don't think they cheapened his legacy in any way. >> it's paying tribute to him and his music, as there is this new album out. i think it's an incredible way

to honor him. i mean, i can understand where people got emotional and some people thought it was a little disturbing, but i think it just honors his legacy. >> i think it looks amazing. the technology. the idea that you've got camera moves and all this and it's all registers. but there is just a little bit -- >> i get it. >> you know, what happens when you start bringing people back? >> natalie cole did it with her dad. hank williams jr. i think did the same thing. >> but the technology wasn't there at that point. it's almost -- it's just a little freaky. >> eerie. >> a little eerie. but i think it was so well-done. i mean, it really was. >> tasteful. >> yes, no question. >> it was fantastic. it's amazing that he recorded that song in 1991. natalie actual natalie actually got me to download it. never felt so good. i listened all day yesterday.

different tracks. and so bring it to the eight that they've picked for this album, which goes to tell you how much other great music is out there that was michael's. >> and how talent lives forever. we're all dust in the ground, kids will be listening to michael jackson. >> what a downer. >> his talent lives forever. >> they'll be watching our holograms on the "today" show. >> i don't think so. >> not as much demand for that one? fair enough. you remember this piece of video that had us all catching our breath when we watched it. marcus crossland is the father here pushing his 6-year-old son dino down a 13-foot skate ramp at a park. the video was posted online in april. strong reaction, as you can imagine. dino's parents are now speaking out for the first time to the "today" show to explain what happened. >> it was a bonehead decision. that was my poor attempt at trying to help him overcome his fear. it was an effort to help him, but it didn't come across that

way. i'm sorry that i made that decision, to use that tactic as opposed to another. sorry for the outcome. because of a decision i made, my wife and my children and everybody's got to deal with it. >> so dino's mother emily spoke to us on the "today" show this morning. she said her husband is kind hearted, he's a good father, she doesn't condone what he did. she said she was furious when she saw the piece of video. the family claims that he lost his job because of this incident. we reached out to his former employer. they couldn't confirm exactly why he lost that job. emily, the mother, says the family lost a babysitter and they're now actually going to move out of town because of some of the reaction they've gotten. florida's child welfare agency and the sheriff's office are still investigating. she said when i interviewed her, i'd hate to be judged by the worst two seconds of my life. she was furious at what happened. but she said we're trying to get on with our lives and he's a good dad. >> it's hard to look at that video still. there's no justification when you see that. but the kid is a really accomplished skateboarder.

he's 6 years old and there's a lot of video of dino out there doing big stunts. >> look at him. >> he's pretty incredible. it's a fine line when you're a parent and you have to -- how do you push your kids to overcome their fear? but certainly pushing them over the edge -- >> i remember my dad pushing me into a pool. there was no water in it at the time. i'm just kidding. >> that explains everything. >> he didn't do that. but listen, we've all judged a lesson very well learned. by all accounts, he's a good dad. >> he lost his job. they're having to move. he says he lost the job because of this. and that they have to move. i think it's fair to have it investigated, but that should that kind of revenge be taken out on him is tough. to a lighter note, here's something hard to believe. '90s sitcoms are under attack. >> what? >> john stamos coming to their rescue. john stamos is defending 1990

sitcoms after a "huffington post" blogger wrote tv shows like "full house" and "friends" were dumb and gave her unrealistic expectations about life. did you grow up in a bubble? did you have no parents? the blogger said when you get upset, someone chases after you and you can work as a coffee shop waitress and struggling writer and afford an 1,100 square foot apartment in manhattan. >> that's true. i always wondered how they could afford that. >> but you didn't put your life on hold trying to find that apartment. >> ridiculous. no. >> stamos wrote on facebook that "full house" did have some silly unrealistic stuff, but more good than bad came out of sitcoms. >> morals it to. >> it was warm-hearted. he suggested if the writer had kids, maybe he should watch reruns of "breaking bad" and see how that turns out. >> yeah. what's the moral of "breaking bad"? >> come on. they're sitcoms. they're on tv. they're not documentaries. >> they know this is fictional,

exceptional drought throughout much of northern and western texas into oklahoma. and it is just going to hang there. look at these temperatures. 100 in yuma. phoenix 100. as you make your way into texas and new mexico, we're looking at temperatures well over 100, into the 90s. fire weather watches from arizona all the way into texas and oklahoma as well. elevated fire risk, but look at the critical area. this is where we expect probably some fires to start forming. single digit relative humidity. sustained wind gusts of 40 miles per hour. and above normal temperatures. so we are going to be watching this very, very closely. same kind of conditions like we meanwhile, we've got a change coming into your california forecast for today. i'm meteorologist christine loren. overcast skies in san francisco right now. over mount tam, nice and clear for now. we do have a chance for isolated thunderstorms over your higher elevations later on today.

seemed to know more about sex than i did. >> i think it's kind of going that way. i guess for me, i never really wanted to have the talk. and going back and writing this book is confirmation for both of us that we never should have had the talk. >> yeah, because i thought of things -- like first of all, i didn't understand birds and the bees. why birds and bees? why not dogs and bees or whatever? >> yeah. >> but i did some research and found out that birds find their mates with colorful feathers and beautiful songs and, and bees -- bees can have sex or mate in midair. >> wow. that's impressive. >> they mate with the queen and then they drop dead. >> so you die after you have sex. that's fantastic. >> i thought maybe that was the wrong message. >> this is exactly why we didn't have the conversations. i think parenting style is interesting, too, because it wasn't until later in life that i realized that things were a little different in our house. a little off beat. we had a ceramic fiberglass cow in our yard that mom had bought for you for christmas. that's a whole other story. imagine growing up with a big

cow in your front yard. we had pictures of the steak n shake restaurant food, that you see in steak n shake restaurants in our living room. that was the art in our house. cheeseburgers and milkshakes. >> right. and elvis bust on the plant stand. >> that's all true. i think for you, parenting was a little bit different back then. >> it was. those were different times. and your mother -- mothers weren't quite as neurotic, if i may say so, as they are today. or careful. she drank wine, water skied, went to grateful dead concerts. that's partially the reason you turned out the way you are. >> drinking was another conversation that we didn't really have. i think it's fair to say your philosophy was drink in the house, have some around us, but that kind of snowballed into some other activities. >> i didn't know what was going on outside. i had one of your friends's fathers called me and said there are ninjas going up the side of our house. you guys were taking rock

climbing in high school. and so you were taking beer and yourself and possibly women, young girls, up to his third floor bedroom. >> that's true. we were rappelling down the side of the house with drinks and beer. and the other thing you didn't realize i don't think until you opened the book was that we were running a fake i.d. syndicate. >> i didn't know that. >> out of your kitchen. in the state of new jersey, you could peel off the top of the license, so we'd go over mom's stove and we'd get some steam going. >> was she cooking? >> she had fettuccine on the other boiler and we were melting glue off. >> i answered a call once on vacation that your fake i.d.s had been rejected. >> that's true. >> and one of your friends took off and eluded police for several hours. i had to talk him down. >> i think we had a good talk right here. did we just have a good talksome. >> i think so. >> it was decent. >> more than we've ever had our whole life. >> the longest deep conversation we've ever had. >> i like the chairs.

a handshake is being blamed for the first known person-to-person transmission of the mers respiratory virus in the united states. health officials say an illinois man became infected after shaking hands with a health care worker who had just returned from saudi arabia. that health care worker was later hospitalized with the country's first known case of the virus. there are now three confirmed mers cases in the u.s. the department of agriculture is announcing a recall of 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products. officials say the beef from the wolverine packing company in detroit may be contaminated with e. coli bacteria. it was produced between march 31st and april 18th and shipped to michigan, missouri, and massachusetts and ohio. at least 11 illnesses have been linked to the beef. the coffee fungus that is causing prices to rise has a new enemy. the u.s. government. washington is funding a $5 million research program at

texas a&m to try to wipe out coffee rust. the disease already has caused $1 billion in damage to coffee crops in latin america. and another mammoth deal in the works that would transform the television landscape. at&t has agreed to buy directv for $48.5 billion. the at&t deal is subject to government review. "godzilla" was unstoppable at the weekend box office. the 3-d monster movie grossed more than $92 million, according to early estimates. that is the second-best opening of the year. the seth rogan comedy "neighbors "was in second place followed by "the amazing spider-man 2." finally, a pop-up on the golf course. take a look at what happened to padraig harrington at the byron nelson championship. he gets to the par 4, 11th hole, hits that great drive. ball goes in. and get this. it pops right back out. harrington's reaction, just what you would expect. maybe a little bit calmer than you would expect. how unlucky was that?

in, told her daughter to point out the boy who had been bullying her. they said she grabbed the 11-year-old boy by the throat and threatened him in front of other children. deputies arrested her and they're looking into the bullying allegations. we're going to have a look at weather and traffic right after this break.

a little bit, try starting it again. if it doesn't work, well in that case, you're going to need a tow. >> what if the start ser the problem? >> you can try putting it into neutral.er is the problem? >> you can try putting it into neutral. >> let's get to the windshield problem here. a lot of times this happens. especially after winter, the spring showers. the blade falls off. if you keep driving with it, what are the consequences? >> well, consequences are serious. it's very dangerous because arm is metal, and it will literally etch into the windshield. so what you want to do is pull over. and find something in your car. look around for a soft cloth or i don't know, a t-shirt or something and you want to wrap it around the arm. >> a temporary fix. >> and that's key. it's a temporary fix. put the rubber band on tight or a hair tie if you have long hair. put it on. because windshields are expensive. it will save you a lot of money. >> so now that we've got warm weather coming up, some cars start overheating as you get

into the warmer weather. >> they sure do. paying attention to your dashboard. that's really key. because there are indicators like the dashboard lying or the temperature gauge that rises. so you can be proactive. in the event that it does overheat, if off clogged radiator, bad thermostat or radiator hoses. it's very soft compared to this one. they develop pinholes, which when the antifreeze goes in the hot engine, it will make your engine smoke, and that's when you need to pull over so you don't blow a head gasket. but if you don't have time to pull over, you can, even in the summer, turn the air conditioner off, put the heat on high -- >> that's hot in the summer. >> but it's pulling the heat from the engine come papartment which is going to buy you some time. >> this is a problem a lot of people have. oil leaks in the driveway or in your garage. how do you get rid of that. >> well, convenient household

items are certainly going to help you out. detergent. and baking soda. you're going to put it on to the stain. scrub it in. let it sit overnight. and the next day, sweep it up. if it doesn't completely remove, at least it will minimize. >> and you get mud into your car now because you've got the spring thaw. >> more if you're stuck in the mud, right? >> definitely if you're stuck. so dual purpose. your car comes stock with floor mats. if you're going to be stuck, the worst thing you can do is continue to spin out because you're going to dig a hole deeper and heat up your transmission. get out of the car with your floor mat. look to see which of the wheels is getting you stuck. >> which side do you put it on? >> which way you're going matters. so if you're going forward, then you're going to put the floor mat in front. and if you're going in reverse, then you're going to put it behind. go back into your car.

my favorite joint in the world, luling's city market. my mouth is watering as i speak. but just take a look at why i love it so much. my favorite hometown restaurant is the city market in the heart of bustling luling, texas. population -- hmm, i don't know, maybe a couple of thousand on a big day. the city market is legendary. it ties into my childhood. it is not fancy. and it's not supposed to be. they give you whatever you want. ribs, pork. my favorite is the sausage. bright red. we have special sauce made at the city market. you drizzle it on. there is grease and salt. my mouth is watering. all kinds of things happening there. but it's all delicious. my grandfather was a sharecropper who later became a pit master not very far from the city market. so i'm pretty particular about my barbecue. it's in my blood. i'm lewis mitchell's granddaughter. so you cannot be the pit

master's granddaughter and not know good meat. so joey capella and aaron ellis are here. we already started digging in. so let me first start -- what's the secret? i've wondered my entire life. why does the meat taste better in luling? >> it tastes better in luling because of the smoke. >> what kind of smoke -- what kind of wood do you use? >> post oak. >> now, why is that special? >> the post oak, it burns slow, so it doesn't burn the meat. and it also puts off a whole lot of smoke. >> the other thing i wondered about joey is the sauce. this is how it's served, by the way, in the restaurant. you get a piece of paper. >> it smells great. >> you get your side. you get a piece of white bread. we don't do wheat bread in luling. and a big red soda. is it spicy? >> my hands are clean. >> so, what is the secret to also the sauce? what's the ingredient in there? joey, what's in it? can you tell us? >> i can't tell you.

and then you let it sit. >> how long do we let it sit? >> overnight. >> overnight. okay, come on. just dump it on? >> just sprinkle it. >> i was going to overseason it. what cut of meat do you like? do you trim the fat off? >> we usually trim it before we get to this. >> before we season it up. >> you've got to get both sides. there you go. guys, you like it? >> oh, my gosh. >> willie's moving. >> this brisket's amazing. >> if we don't have that wood, how do we smoke it at home? >> you can put it -- just make sure that you don't put it over direct heat. you don't want it hot. you want it to cook slow. >> what's the trick in cutting? how do i slice my brisket? >> most people want to cut the brisket with the grain. but we do it against the grain. it's actually kind of the long way. when you cut that brisket against the grain like this, it's going to come out way more tender that way. and then you're going to get a

school in santa rosa during lunch on friday. deputies said she didn't check in, told her daughter to point out which boy had been bullying her. she grabbed the 11-year-old boy which the throat and threatened him in front of a bunch of kids. they're looking into the bullying allegations as well. we'll take a look at weather and traffic after the break.

we'll see intervals of clouds and sun throughout the day today. temperatures mostly in the low 70s. couple mid-60s out there. 65 degrees in san francisco. 71 degrees if the east bay and south bay for today. a slight chance of thunderstorms today, but generally mild with sun and clouds. tomorrow, better chance for thunderstorms. and then we're going to warm you up as we get into the memorial day weekend. we'll show you that forecast today at 11:00. we're looking over to the east shore freeway where the camera was shaking. the breeze going around the area. not a big deal for the bay bridge, but an easier drive down the east shore freeway. west 80, a four-car incident on the shoulder. lanes are clear. the rest of the drive looking pretty good. both sides of the bay a little smoother than before. north 87, still slow, but continuing recovery from a tough morning for 187.

not everybody is lucky enough to live at the beach. that doesn't mean you can't make it feel like the ocean right at your door. >> here with some simple and low budget do it yourself projects to get the easy breezy beachy feel at home is amy goodman, contributing editor at "coastal living" magazine, which i love. i love that magazine. >> so peaceful. >> you can do that and make your

whole house feel like the beach. >> that's the idea. the first of our do it yourself ideas is things you can do any home to transform and give you that great beachy feel. >> okay. >> so we're going to start off with this great coat rack. when you first enter a home, it sets a mood. we took the orar, sanded it and primed it. you can paint it in a green or sea blue. we found fabulous little drawer pulls, you can use hooks you find at your local hardware store. the trick here is just to make the drill hole a little bit smaller than the actual screw and then you can manually put these right in. d rings in the back to hang it up and instant impression. we're always wondering what do we do with all the shells we have collected from all our travels, from the beach. here we have beautiful decorative mirer. first tip, if you get these shells yourself, sometimes they have a slightly oceany fragrance. treat it in one part bleach with one part water, soak it and this

will eliminate any residual odor from that. we put some baby oil on it to pretreat it. and then you're ready to go out and work with a hot glue gun, putting down the big shells first and then the medium and small to fill in the gaps. >> okay. this is cute. >> that is cute. >> you take a standard lamp you have at home and give it a nautical twist that is very unique and fabulous. start from the top of the lamp, you put the hot glue gun all the way around and then just put the first ring around. you work your way down and, like, about two inches of sections of hot glue. we'll show you, you don't have to glue the entire thing, a little section of glue here and about -- like two inches or so, when it decides to come out and you can secure your rope. >> i can never do it, sorry. >> there you go. secure your rope as you go. when you get to the bottom, you can flip this upside down and put it between your legs to get it more secure. at the end, when you cut it, do a dollop of the glue gun so it

doesn't fray. >> okay. >> we love embracing the coastal lifestyle every day. this is a beautiful decor piece for any area of your home, even a centerpiece. take your glass containers. we use ed ginger jars, use any one you have at home. fill it with about a third with sand. the tip is to mack a funnel with a sandwich bag and sand. clip off the tip here and it makes a nice funnel so the sand doesn't fly all over the place. and then fill it with your beach glass and/or shells to make it a beautiful display. >> how do we get this wall in our house behind us? i want that. >> and then here we have a very do it yourself. we'll have you dive in. this is a shell pattern beautiful pillow. get a pillow, take the pill you out, put a hard board insert inside so the paint doesn't go through and with your paintbrushes put on a color of your choice, these are fabric paints. and just put that all over your fan shaped shell. do you want a nice wide shell
