nbc is with that fire. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: at base camp, the smell of thick heavy smoke, a clear indication the fire is growing. the blaze has destroyed some 5,000 acres. the containment is at zero percent. overnight, feeding on dry forest land in whipped by winds, crews cannot keep the fire in check. flames swept up steep canyons, hop scotching across ridges. the terrain here, a perfect funnel for a firestorm. >> we just have a very persistent, hot, dry winds pushing the fire. pushing that. it's a big blow dryer drying things out. >> reporter: with 300 homes, cabins, businesses threatened. >> we need to be ready. >> reporter: another 3,000 homeowners have been told they may have to evacuate at any moment. >> you need to grab that pictures frame.

>> reporter: we found this family scrambling to go. >> reporter: how scary is that? >> it's scary. >> reporter: temporarily ground after high winds wednesday, today the air attack hopes to criss-cross across the sky, working to keep flames from reaching the slide rock state park. for now the stone water slide, the spectacular terrain is safe. but with smoke billowing in, the popular park is closed. and many resorts this memorial day weekend have been forced to shut down. >> this is probably one of the top three weekends that we experienced. financially, the initial hit will probably come somewhere between 30 and 40,000 this weekend. >> with hundreds of firefighters now on the ground and 20 hot shot crews moving in, this morning in arizona, it's all hands on deck. a firefight to save precious land and hundreds of homes. there is good news, while this fire did grow overnight, it is

burning away from homes into the forests. crews will spend their time building containment lines around rural communities, hoping the fire doesn't shift directions and burn back towards us. matt, savannah. >> miguel, thank you very much. now to a disturbing story. this brings back memories of that horrific kidnapping case in cleveland. now a 25-year-old woman found in california ten years after she was reported missing by her mother. police say she was drugged, kidnapped and eventually forced to marry her alleged captor. this morning, we are learning a lot more about this time in captivity. nbc has the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, details are still emerging. the story is told by the mother we are not identifying. it's an account of decade backed up by evidence of abuse. the woman is okay physically now and her alleged abductor is in custody. it started in an apartment in santa ana. police say a 15-year-old girl just arrived from mexico, told

them on that day, her mother's boy endyisidro garcia sexually assaulted her. the mother filed a missing person's report. the daughter never returned home. she says she ran away to this park with garcia found her and trucked her. she says she woke up in a locked garage not knowing where she was. garcia, she told 34ris, told her he controlled her are threats and gave her fake i.d.s for night shift janitorial work for oat both thf hem. >> he held her, this is your name, get to know the information. >> reporter: she says she tried to run for freedom. >> he chased her down and she was physically beaten for her efforts. >> reporter: she says the months and years went by. when they set himmed in this town in santa anna, neighbors saw them as a couple with garcia really in charge. >> he wouldn't really let her go outside, shelves out five

minutes or so, then he would pull her in. >> still they posted photos and a baby girl and posted her pictures, too, part of what the police see as an aspect of stockholms syndrome, a curious bonding between victim and alleged abu musab al zarqa alleged abductor. three years ago the cleveland women kidnapped as girls escaped the decades long grasp of their kidnapper ariel castro. she found her sister on facebook and listened to when her sister said, get away from this man and go to the police. now. the woman told police she and garcia actually married years ago, although with false identities and while she was still under avenlth garcia makes his first court appearance later today, savannah. >> mike, thank you very much. elizabeth smart was kidnapped at gunpoint from her bedroom when she was 14 and held captive nine months.

she is now an ad advocate for victim's rights abduction and writes about her experience in the book "my story." elizabeth, good morning, it's always good to see you. >> it's great to see you, savannah. >> whenever you hear a story like this, you, unlike anybody else, must really feel it resonate, somebody believed to be long gone suddenly found. what was your reaction? >> i actually have a few different reactions. first of all, i am overjoyed. i am so thrilled that, you know, she was rescued. she had the courage to, you know, make that attempt, to be saved. so i am very, very happy. on the other hand, i feel very, very almost protective of these survivors because so much is going on, all at once. and it's overwhelming. when you have been there, it's overwhelming. so, certainly, me wanting to help protect them is, is just one of the feelings i feel. >> what would be your message to

her this morning as someone who has been there? >> don't feel pressured into doing something you don't want to do. if you don't feel like sharing your story yet, you don't need to. we will still be here if and when you decide to share your story. take all the time you feed to find you and to find happiness, to find that new normal in your life, to move forward. to take all the time you need. >> there is one aspect of this story i know people will talk about. apparently over the course of ten years, there were times when this young woman tried to escape but later she led something that appears to outsiders a normal life. she some ha adjusted. i remember when you and i talked a while back, you said there can be stronger bonds and chains than physical bonds and chains, i know, because i have had both. can you shed light how someone feels in that situation, they can't escape even when it feels like they may have a chance?

>> i'm really glad you asked this question. because it's so easy for us to be curious and think, well, why didn't you escape? you know, why didn't you run away? but it's really important that we don't ask that question because all the survivor hears is you should have done smchlth it's your fault you were gone so long. that's not what they need to be hearing right now. for me, having my family threatened was the most terrifying thing for me in my entire ordeal, because my family is my world and i could never stand the thought of something happening to them because of something i did. so especially for a young child, really, i mean, she was 15 when she was kidnapped, who loves her family. how can anything worse be worse than someone threatening her family? it's so, so important for us not to stand outside and say, well you should have and why done you. it's so important for us not to

say those kind of things. >> one of the reasons we are so glad to have your perspective on a morning like this. eldz meth smart, thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> really, to see someone who obviously has experienced it is different from all of us looking from the outside. >> a childhood advocate. >> that was her new information. now, the boston marathon bombings information is coming to light. >> new details on the evidence against dzhokar tsarnaev, including a note he wrote while hiding in a boat as police closed in. nbc's chief justice correspondent pete williams has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning to you. in these newly released court documents, they say dzhokar tsarnaev wrote kind of a confession bleeding in that boat hours after his older brother was killed in a shotout. prosecutors say he wrote, quote, i'm jealous of my brother who

has received the reward of jannutul firdaus inshallah. before me. i do not mourn because his soul is very much alive. the government gets new detail about its searchs to solve a mystery, where were the bombs built? the documents sigh the explosive powder used to make them from fireworks was extremely fine. the documents say not a trace of them was ever found in searching the tsarnaev's three cars or their residents. at the time the fbi worries others may be involved. today that is not a concern. >> thank you, pete achlts top white house aide is in phoenix to oversee the veteran's affairs investigation that has now expanded to 26 facilities. the house committee will consider giving the va inspector general $5 million to investigate whether they cooked the books. they are under fire over excessive wait times and a

coverup at its hospitals. president obama is promising punishment if the inspector general's report finds anything. the pentagon says half of the them will be used for a drone for the search. the pentagon says the troops will not be involved in ground searches. the pentagon says their mission is not to get to the terror group boka haram but to find the girls. and an attack at a market in northwest china left at least 31 people dead and more than 91 injured. state tv says the assailants plowed through shoppers and threw explosives out the window before crashing head-on. coin pledged to punish those responsible. and under surveillance video captured frightening moments when three kids were shocked in a florida pool. this happened last month at a condo complex.

a young girl touched the metal rail and is shocked t. pan tracks her out of the water, initially, no one realized another boy was still in the pool. eventually another man runs in and moves him out as well. all three victims spent three nights in the hospital. they are doing okay. inspectors say a pool pump wasn't properly grounded. >> that then electrified the water. quick reflexes there. >> thank goodness the adults were monita grabbing kids out. >> natalie, thank you. after suffering through one of the worst winters, a lot of folks are ready for summer. >> its unofficial start is almost here. we are talking about memorial day weekend. >> the folks at aaa expect that starting today more than 36 million americans will travel 50 miles or more for the holiday. >> that is the second highest total in four years. 88% will be driving to your destination. according to tsa another 6

a very good morning to you. 7:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. the woman who grabbed a little boy by a neck could enter a plea in court today. her attorney says depending on the outcome of the court appearance, garcia-bratcher may talk to the media for the first time. she is accused of walking on the olivet elementary campus and putting her hands around the neck of a boy last friday. there is no evidence to support that. in san jose police are looking for a man caught on surveillance video accused of using a shotgun to rob a store. the robbery happened on may 9th, but police just released the video yesterday. the suspect hit the customer in

mcilroy added he just wants to get his head into golf and concentrate on the tournament. as for wozniacki, she tweeted this morning, it's a hard time for me now. and thanked fans for their support. >> they're very young, of course, this plays out in the public. >> willie, thank you very much. let's get a check of the weather from al. >> all right. guys, thanks so much. we are talking a lot of wet weather here in the east with a warm front. and the difference north of the front to south of the front it's much cooler once you get to boston, 60 in providence. some of these thunderstorms pretty heavy. we could use that rain in northern texas. good news, you can see exceptional drought in northern texas on into oklahoma. they're going to get a little bit of a break. this upper level low is going to be spinning out from california, as it does, increasing moisture, increasing instability. and that means over the next five days, parts of it will see upwards of five inches of rain.

♪ ♪ back at 7:39 with the latest explosive allegations being leveled against the nfl. we told you about this lawsuit a little earlier in the week. a group of former players accusing the nfl of putting profits ahead of safety, claiming they were maintained with addictive drugs to keep them on the field. ron pritchard played for the houston oilers and the cincinnati bengals. j.d. hill played with the buffalo bills. they're here with their attorneys. good morning. >> was it hard to join this lawsuit? you played at this level, it made you famous, to support your families, was it hard to join this lawsuit?

>> no, it wasn't, we know the outcome, we know the effect having taken drugs, having ended up on drugs after my career. it wasn't hard at all. >> let me read the charges in the lawsuit. nfl players who were routinely given prescription drugs for long periods. the nfl illegally and unethically substituted pain medications for proper health care. does this square with your personal experience? >> it does. i think we're dealing with just mismanagement of controlled substances that they should have paid attention closer. and had my best interests and j.d.'s best interests at heart. >> are you talking about regular occurrences week after week after week? or isolated incidents? >> we're talking about week after week after week. >> absolutely, yeah. >> so as the lawsuit alleges, as one person in the lawsuit alleges, you're on the plane flying home from the game. and the trainer or team doctor is walking down the aisle with a briefcase filled with pills handing them out without prescriptions?

he told her that she have threats. they married when she was under age, they even have a daughter together. they posted photos and videos of themselves with their daughter, neighbors saw them as a couple with garcia in control according to a couple of them. police see this as stockholm syndrome. the woman said she did try for her freedom but garcia beat her. how did this come about? the woman found her sister on facebook. she followed her sister's advice to get away and go to police. earlier this morning, savannah actually spoke to kidnapping victim elizabeth smart to get her perspective on the story. >> i'm so thrilled that, you know, she was rescued. she had the courage, you know, to make that attempt to be saved. so i'm very, very happy. on the other hand, i feel very, very almost protective of these

from some people, as well as a vip party that was held tuesday night. the party apparently very close to where the remains -- unidentified remains of people who died that day are kept. the restaurant, 80-seat pavilion cafe supposed to open in the summer. the food is supposed to be season only fare with comforting tie-in here with that emotional experience of walking through the museum. the restaurant owner said he wasn't doing it for crass or commercial reasons. a portion of the proceeds go back to the museum. not all of the money. >> no. >> a portion of it. i think that's also got people pretty upset. i don't know, there's a report that some of the first responders who came to see the museum, it was open for a few days for them to see initially, they were turned away as they prepped for this party the other night. so their opportunity to go in there in solitude and reflegz, and they were allegedly turned away while the party was being

it's that time when we meet our newest "everyone has a story" contest winner. brenda michaels wrote in to tell us about her battles with cancer after being diagnosed with the disease three times. >> her struggle almost left her defeated. in the end, it taught her some important life lessons. we'll speak with brenda in a moment. but first, let's hear her story. >> at age 26, i was given a very unusual gift, cancer. i'm not saying this to make light of what appeared to be really an early death sentence, cancer devastated my life. my marriage was ripped apart. and our meager finances were drained away faster than anyone

could have imagined. over the course of 14 years, cancer claimed my entire reproductive system, both my breasts, and left me with a prognosis of a year to live. now, cancer ushered in one of most difficult periods of my life. but it also ignited one of the most profound. having cancer left me stranded in a place where no doctor had the ability to save me. but it led me to the truth of who i am, and the realization that only i possessed the power to save myself. looking honestly at my life, i realized that the pain and struggle that i had been living had been central theme in my life. after years of living this way, i was exhausted. i started to believe that life wasn't worth living. then without warning, came my third diagnosis of cancer. and immediately the words careful what you wish for flashed through my mind. but you know when it came down

and i also really, in that story, it was so true, i was ready to give up. i really felt at one point that dying might be easier than living. >> and what helped you turn the corner because there are people out there who are getting or have gotten a terrible diagnosis. >> and they're watching now. >> they're watching, yeah. >> my faith. and i didn't have that faith, by the way, before this happened. but when things like that come into your life, it wakes you up. and that was my wake-up call. and i turned to god. i turned to prayer. i turned to meditation. and i turned to going inward. >> and you changed your diet. >> completely. >> tell everybody about that. >> i changed my diet. i changed my whole life. i realized i was living a lifestyle that was conducive to this type of disease. i was in l.a., i was working on being an actress, and i was drinking and smoking and partying and not taking good care of myself. but more importantly, i was not

happy. i was -- there was -- i had demons. lots of demons. and i realized when i got sick, i needed to heal those wounded places in me and if i could do that, i felt i had a real chance at life. >> and ha new purpose. >> yes. >> for first time. that's extraordinary. >> a lot of times when you feel crummy and you walk around with that dark cloud over your head, it seems -- i don't know if there is any scientific proof for any of this stuff, but i feel like when you walk around with that dark cloud and stressed out, it almost acts look a catalyst for the illness. you know what i mean? you feel like it does. >> i've come to really believe in my life and feel that illness and disease serves a -- all tragedy serves a great purpose in our life, and even though it is difficult to go through and painful, when you come out the other side, you find the gift. and that's why i -- >> you called it the --
