the t-shirts "i'm here with my daughter." >> sure you are. >> and to clarify it's mahomies. >> if you're a fan, you know who you are. we will get to that concert coming up in the next hour. but first, today's top story. what we're now learning from the investigation into that killing spree through a california college town. nbc's mike taibbi is in santa barbara. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. police now have a clear idea of the chronology of that rampage, but given current mental health laws, they don't know how to hold off the next elliot rodger. >> you denied me a happy life, and in turn, i will deny all of you life. >> reporter: alleged gunman elliot rodger's own words are painting a clearer picture of the possible motives behind the murderous rampage through a seaside southern california town. along with a final 11th hour video that he posted to youtube, he reportedly circulated a

140-page manifesto titled "my twisted world" just before the massacre. in it, the writer says he'd been thinking about his killing spree and planning it since he was 17, five years ago. frustrated by feeling repeatedly rejected by women, he called his plan "the day of retribution" and wrote, "i cannot kill every single female on earth, but i can deliver a devastating blow that will shake all of them to the core of their wicked hearts." according to reports, rodger's divorced parents, his mother chin and his father, the film director, peter rodger were among the recipients of that chilling diatribe. after receiving the e-mail friday night, they alerted authorities and frantically tried to find their son, but it was too late. >> i need three ambulances here. shots fired, shots fired. >> reporter: last month, they had alerted elliot's therapist about his increasingly maudlin, though not yet threatening, videos and blogs. police were asked to check on him. they did. but he wrote in that manifesto that he tactfully told them it

was all a misunderstanding, that it was fine, and that the police never came back. that happens, say mental health advocates, when police see no record or indication of immediate danger in subjects like rodger. >> they can pull it together for long enough to do the interview. how long was the interview? five, ten minutes? >> reporter: the result, a month ago -- >> he did not meet the criteria for an involuntary mental health hold. >> reporter: now, seven young victims, including the one police now call a madman, are dead. the chancellor here at uc santa barbara has declared tomorrow a day of mourning and reflection, and the largest of several memorials is scheduled for 4:00 in the afternoon here at harder stadium on campus. willie. >> our thoughts this morning are certainly with the families of all those victims in santa barbara, california. mike taibbi, thanks, mike. meantime, president obama has returned to washington this morning following a lowing surprise visit with u.s. service

members in afghanistan and he has a busy memorial day planned. nbc's kristen welker is at the white house. >> reporter: good morning to you. president obama will participate in the traditional memorial day ceremonies later today, including laying a wreath at arlington national cemetery and he'll continue to navigate the mounting scandal over the v.a., after a whirlwind four-hour visit to afghanistan. as veterans across the country prepare to mark memorial day, a surprise visit by the commander in chief over the weekend to thank those still serving in afghanistan. >> the american people stand united. we support you. we are proud of you. we stand in awe of your service. >> reporter: adding to the tribute, a performance by country star brad paisley. mr. obama acknowledged many in the audience were on their final tour of duty as the nearly 13-year-long war winds down. >> afghans will take full responsibility for their security. america's war in afghanistan will come to a responsible end.

>> reporter: even as combat operations end, the question is how many of the more than 30,000 u.s. troops will remain on the ground? the president dropped a hint. >> a limited military presence in afghanistan beyond 2014. >> reporter: white house officials say he'll likely get into more specifics during a speech at west point wednesday. overshadowing the trip, the growing scandal at home over allegations of widespread misconduct at v.a. hospitals. mr. obama alluded to the controversy. >> helping our wounded veterans and warriors heal isn't just a promise, it's a sacred obligation. >> reporter: the v.a. on the minds of veterans at parades across the country. >> i believe that what's happening, if it's factual, is a disgrace to our veterans. >> we're humans. we will make mistakes. they do take care of us. >> this is a systemic problem that has happened for many, many, many years. >> reporter: now, there was one glitch to the president's trip. there are reports the white house inadvertently provided a

list to reporters of briefing attendees in afghanistan, which included the name of the top cia officer there. the white house quickly fixed its error. officials here are declining to comment this morning. willie, back to you. >> kristen welker at the white house. thank you. paul rieckhoff, an iraq war veteran, is the founder and executive director of iraq and afghanistan veterans of america. paul, good to see you. >> good to see you, willie. >> so the president goes to afghanistan yesterday, reaffirms that this war by and large will be over by the end of the year with some residual forces remaining. 13 years on now, paul, some 2,300 americans dead, did the united states achieve its objectives as they were set out in 2001 in afghanistan? >> i don't think we know yet. we'll find out over the next few years and next few decades. i think for our troops and veterans, they've done everything they've been asked to do. they've stepped up and they've sacrificed and especially on memorial day it's about reflecting on those we've lost and spending time with our families and trying to reconnect after very long years of war. >> the president did talk obliquely about the veterans

affairs scandal. he said it's a sacred obligation that we take care of our veterans when they come home. that hasn't been going on lately at the department of veterans affairs. how frustrated are you and your constituency, not just with the department, but with the president of the united states? >> extremely frustrated. our members are outraged nationwide. they've lost faith in the v.a., in secretary shinseki and in the president. he's got to work hard to regain that trust and faith for the millions of veterans who depend on the v.a. this is crossing geography and partisan lines. it's outrage i've never seen before. the president took too long to get to this. the secretary took too long to address it and now they've really got to make up ground to regain that trust. >> you've stopped short so far of calling for the resignation of secretary shinseki. so let's be constructive about this. you get rid of the guy at the top, that's one thing. but there's a massive problem underlying that. what are some things we can do right now to improve the v.a.? >> it's a massive bureaucracy that's been broken for decades. shinseki's at the top of it. we also need massive reform. congress just passed a v.a. accountability act. we need the senate to pass that

through as well. we need better oversight from congress. they've also been asleep at the switch here. we need all americans to step up. they can support community-based non-profits and all the other local veterans groups that have to fill that void when v.a. can't be there. >> as you pointed out many times, we're just at the beginning of this problem. we've got a lot more veterans about to come into the system. it has to be fixed now. >> that's right. almost 2.8 million men and women have served overseas since 9/11, and on this day especially, on memorial day, we want to honor the folks we've lost. put the politics aside. we're asking everyone around the country at 12:01 to go silent. that's the hash tag we're using. if you want to remember somebody of any generation that's been lost, remember them today at 12:01. take a minute whenever you are. this is really a day where everybody else goes to the beach and the vets go to the cemetery to remember those we've lost. >> i think that's a great idea. paul rieckhoff, thank you for your service, not only abroad, but continuing in your years afterward. >> thank you, always appreciate you, man. >> let's head to tamron for a check of the morning's other top stories. good morning, everyone. emergency crews this morning are looking for three people missing after a massive mudslide during

the night in colorado. it happened in a remote area near collbran about 40 miles from grand junction and west of denver. the mesa county sheriff's department says the slide is about four miles long, two miles wide, and 250 feet deep. today pope francis is wrapping up his emotional visit to the holy land. this morning, he met with holocaust survivors and prayed at some of the world's holiest locations. nbc's anne thompson has more from jerusalem. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. on this trip, pope francis describes himself as a pilgrim, but he has become a peacemaker, with his extraordinary invitation to the leaders of israel and palestine, to join him at the vatican next month for a meeting. today, pope francis confronts the future and past of the middle east. at yad vashem, israel's memorial to the holocaust, francis kissed the hands of several survivors, praying that there would never

be another such crime. he visited the dome of the rock, where muslims believe the prophet muhammad ascended to heaven. here the pope asked that no one abuse god's name through violence. at the western wall, the most sacred site in jewish faith, he left a note and his own message, embracing his traveling companions, a rabbi and a sheik. his prayer here mirrored his prayer at the graffiti covered concrete barrier that separates israeli from the palestinian west bank. this palestinian fought her way through the crowds at sunday's mass in bethlehem's manger square to ask for the pope's help. >> we are surrounded with the high cost of war and we are tombed. >> but israel wants the pope to understand the wall was built for security. so today, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu took francis to the memorial for terror victims. unlike amman in bethlehem, there

are no huge crowds here to greet the pope. much of this city is on lockdown. the streets are empty, and in fact, the most visible sign of the pope's visit is the very heavy security presence. tamron? >> all right, anne, thank you very much. new violence today in eastern ukraine, where there are reports of heavy gunfire near the airport in donetsk after gunmen took over the terminal, demanding the withdrawal of ukrainian forces from the facility. meantime, a 48-year-old candy tycoon is claiming victory in sunday's presidential election. petro poroshenko is vowing to put an end to war, chaos, crime, and bring peace to ukraine, following recent crisis there, he's indicated he wants to mend relations with russia. moscow, meantime, says it is ready to meet with him. some big milestones in sports. the dodgers' josh beckett is celebrating the first no-hitter of his career. striking out six, he shut out the philadelphia phillies 6-0, tossing the first major league no-hitter, by the way, of the year if you're counting.

it was the dodgers' first no-hitter since 1996. also celebrating, ryan hunter-reay, who won the indy 500 on sunday, beating helio castroneves. hunter-reay is the first american to win the race since 1996. it's his first indy 500 win. he describes himself as a proud american, appropriate on memorial day. and just four days after announcing that he and tennis star fiancee caroline wozniacki were calling it quits, rory mcilroy came from behind on sunday to beat childhood friend shane lowry by one stroke. it's his first victory of the year. going through a lot there. i guess it would be bittersweet. i mean, you're winning and going through an emotional thing with your fiancee, it's tough. >> yeah. >> sometimes people, you know, they fight through the pain. >> turn the page nicely. >> i'm thinking about her. sorry. >> seems to be working for her,

too. all right, tamron, thank you. dylan is in here for al this morning. some serious concerns for beach goers in florida. >> yes. dangerous rip currents. dozens of people had to be rescued on sunday. today red flag warnings are in effect once again. >> it will take you away if you're not paying attention, and then you'll look up and have to work your way back in. >> reporter: david simmons was among the beach goers battling against rough waters in central florida sunday when 100 people had to be rescued from rip currents. >> it dragged us out a couple of times, but the lifeguards have been very diligent. they've been out with the flags and warning people to come back in. >> reporter: rip currents are powerful narrow channels of fast-moving water caused by shifting sands that can move at speeds of up to eight feet per second, faster than an olympic swimmer. local officials say on an average day they only rescue about a dozen swimmers. >> we had very hazardous rip current conditions today and we'll probably have that

throughout the weekend, so we strongly urge people when they come to the beach, make sure they swim in front of an open lifeguard tower. >> and remember, if you are ever stuck in that rip current, swim parallel to the shoreline to get out of that current. meanwhile, on this memorial day, we are looking at some areas of severe storms. south of amarillo, texas, moving south of austin, and dallas will see some of those stronger storms as we go into this afternoon. we are looking at scattered showers and storms up into parts of the western great lakes, stretching all the way down into texas, but in the same area, similar to where it was yesterday and the day before, this is where we could see some of your stronger storms, especially some wind gusts and that could cause some wind damage, and also the chance of perhaps up to 3 to 5 inches of rain and hail perhaps up to 2 inches in diameter. so we are going to keep a close eye on that area again in texas today. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast coming up in just 30 seconds. coming up in just 30 seconds.

with millions heading to the beach today, it is important to remember the atlantic hurricane season begins on sunday, and this year, forecasters will get help from a predicting tool that might surprise you. here's nbc's kerry sanders. >> reporter: this is the newest weapon in the battle to more accurately predict dangerous hurricanes, sharks. scientists at the university of miami are putting sensors on sharks and other big game fish to transmit data, including deep water temperatures. increasingly, scientists believe those readings could help predict when a tropical storm will turn into a category 5 hurricane. the national weather service is predicting as many as 13 tropical storms this year. six could become hurricanes, and two, they say, could be category 3 or higher. their goal is to be able to sound the alarm when a big storm is coming. this brand-new storm surge simulator at the university of miami could help. it combines coastline surge and

wind models. the weather channel got a sneak peek. >> we're on the cusp of really making some exciting developments. >> reporter: when it's fully operational, it will be able to simulate a category 5 hurricane with winds in excess of 157 miles per hour. >> these will be the highest wind measurements that have ever been made. that will hopefully improve hurricane forecast models. >> reporter: and it will allow scientists to study the effects of storm surge, like the one that caused such devastation in superstorm sandy. in a hurricane, most people fear the intense winds and the swirling debris, but experts say statistically, more people die in the storm surge from drowning than for any other reason. for the first time this year, the national hurricane center will share storm surge prediction maps like this, as a hurricane approaches, to indicate where dangerous flooding is most likely to occur. >> we are bringing more tools to bear on this type of a forecast. we're reducing the cone of uncertainty and i think that's a

remarkable achievement. >> reporter: for "today," kerry sanders, nbc news, miami. >> speaking of hurricanes, already one churning, dylan? >> in the eastern pacific, hurricane amanda, strong category 4. it's the strongest storm this early on record. >> not going to affect too many people, hopefully. >> it's not anywhere close to land. but it's still out there. >> hopefully it's not a sign of things to come. carson is here with an online campaign that popped up in the wake of that terrible rampage in california. >> you touched on the sad news out of santa barbara. i grew up about 90 miles just south of isla vista. friday night, terrible news. seven dead, 13 injured. elliot rodger puts out those videos, writes the manifesto. we saw a lot of people talking about the victims, their families, sending out condolences. come into the orange room and let me show you what we found to be interesting, that's the big conversation that broke out. in the manifesto, rodger talked about the rejection he felt from women being part of the motivation for the spree. this #yesallwomen got about a

a very good morning to you. it is 7:26. happy memorial day. i'm laura garcia-cannon. walnut creek police are looking for two people who shot two people. it happened last night as the victims drove their cars along the popular roadway and then fired shots at the suspect's car right near the shopping center. suspect got out of his car and drove off. a woman driver and a man in the passenger seat just left a gladys knight concert at the concord pavilion. wasn't clear if the suspect and victims had any kind of altercation before that shooting. the conditions and names of the victims have not been released. let's check in with anthony slaughter in for christina this

morning. nice day ahead. >> it is going to be beautiful. looking at conditions fog free in san francisco, not a cloud in the sky, so, really indick cati of what's headed our way as we head through the rest of the day. temperatures really warm and we're talking summer-like and coming down just a little bit in san francisco instead of mid-70s back to 70 today and the north bay stays warm today. close to 90 in places like santa rosa and napa and east bay and low to mid-80s and making plans today, temperatures, again, not as warm as they have been in the past couple days, but still very nice. 70 to 78 will do it and santa cruz one of our warmest up to 80 and cold water temps and small craft advisory remains in effect for the rest of the day. doing any boating remember the spf and lots of water. laura, back to you. traffic is pretty light out there, a lot of people have the day off and crews are working to get a vital stretch of highway in san francisco back open. part of 280 has been closed

♪ you're looking at arlington national cemetery on this day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service, some 400,000 americans buried in that sacred ground in arlington, virginia. good morning again. let's take a look at what's making headlines this morning. a dangerous wildfire south of anchorage, alaska, is leading to mandatory evacuations. it's already grown to more than 156,000 acres as high winds fan those flames. oscar pistorius arrived at a psychiatric hospital this morning to begin his court-ordered mental evaluation. specialists will try to determine if an anxiety disorder factored into the fatal shooting of pistorius's girlfriend, reeva

steenkamp. and rescue crews are just beginning to search for possible victims in a massive mudslide in colorado overnight. it happened after several days of heavy rain, is said to be four miles long and two miles wide. coming up, at just 18 years old, austin mahone already has, count it, more than six million twitter followers, and 400 million views on youtube. that is not shabby. so, it's easy to see why he's being called a music superstar in the making, and this morning, he'll give us all a treat, a live concert just for mahomies on the plaza. we're up to four mahomies? >> right here. add it up. and also, a peek inside the wedding of the weekend, as kim kardashian and kanye west tied the knot, including why kim's own brother wasn't there. but let's begin this half-hour with more on that tragic story out of california. this morning, we are learning more about the victims of friday night's deadly rampage near the uc santa barbara campus.

nbc's joe fryer has more. joe, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. we now know all six of the murder victims were students here at uc santa barbara. tomorrow, classes will be cancelled and there will be a memorial service as the school holds a day of mourning and reflection. on a college campus where questions typically come with solutions, this tragedy has left so many still searching for answers, so they gathered for an evening mass in honor of the victims. >> when i look at the pictures tonight of katie and veronika and chris and even elliot, i see sons and daughters and i ask that question, too, why did that happen? >> reporter: three of the victims were stabbed to death inside elliot rodger's apartment.

they're identified as george chen, who was 19 years old, and cheng yuan hong and weihan wang, both 20. nbc news spoke with their neighbor, who asked not to be identified. >> i want the parents to know their kids didn't do anything wrong. that their kids did not deserve this at all. >> reporter: also among the victims, 20-year-old christopher michael-martinez, who was shot at the deli mart. he wanted to follow in his parents' footsteps and become a lawyer. after the shooting, his father delivered an emotional statement, bringing up the issue of gun control. >> when will enough people say, stop this madness, we don't have to live like this! too many have died! we should say to ourselves, not one more! >> reporter: the final two victims, veronika weiss and katie cooper, were shot and killed near a sorority house. veronika is remembered as a four-sport athlete who excelled at math. katie was the gentle soul who loved to dance. >> that smile, you know? that's what i'm going to miss. that's smile that lit up the room. it lit you up. you just felt, you know,

everything was pretty good right now. >> reporter: in addition to those who were killed, 13 other victims were injured. most of them were shot in the rampage, but a few were actually hit by the suspect's car. this morning, six victims remain in the hospital. natalie? >> and our hearts go out to all of those there. joe fryer in isla vista, thank you so much. let's get a check of the weather now once again from dylan. she's in for al this morning. >> hey, good morning, guys. on this memorial day day, we are going to see pretty warm temperatures. a lot of people outside for all the barbecues and whatnot. we are looking at an area of high pressure sitting out over the atlantic and it's these southerly winds that will continue to keep temperatures above average. so it's actually going to be the warmest day of the holiday weekend in the northeast with the temperatures running about ten to almost 15 degrees above average. chicago should be up to 87 degrees today. and as for water temperatures, they're a little bit colder. 57 off the coast of coney island there. you can see as you head down into myrtle beach and parts of the carolinas, temperatures are

running in the low to mid 70s, so a little more bearable to go in the water out that way. we do have to keep an eye out for parts of texas where we could see a chance of hail. up to two inches in diameter. also damaging wind gusts. as much as three to five inches of rain. so there are some flood watches in effect. elsewhere, just some scattered showers and isolated storms. good morning, 7:35 the time right now. crystal clear conditions in san francisco and not a cloud in the sky and nonetheless any fog to report of. very indicative of what is headed our way. temperatures today a little cooler but still very pleasant. 70 degrees in san francisco and close to 90 you'll notice in the north bay and santa rosa close to 87 degrees and a good mix of low to mid-80s and, again, plenty of sunshine on this memorial day and take advantage if you have the day off. >> that's your latest forecast. >> thanks a lot. when do you plan to retire?

school. the final two victims were sorority sisters. katie cooper was described as a gentle soul who loved to dance, and veronika weiss was an athlete who excelled at math. in addition to the six people who were killed, 13 others were injured in this tragedy. tamron? >> thank you for those new details. officials in belgium have released surveillance video of the gunman who opened fire with an assault rifle saturday at the jewish museum in belgium in brussels. he killed three people, including a couple from israel and critically injured another one. the gunman fled on foot. belgian officials say they believe he acted alone. pope francis is wrapping up his three-day trip to the middle east where he has dealt head-on with the region's political and religious divisions. he visited israel's memorial to the holocaust, kissing the hands of survivors and prayed at the western wall, the most sacred site in the jewish faith. he also visited the dome of the rock where muslims believe the prophet muhammad ascended to heaven. pope francis asked that no one abuse god's name through violence.

president obama is observing memorial day by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns in arlington national cemetery. he returned this morning from a surprise trip to visit american troops in afghanistan. the president assured them that the 13-year war would come to a responsible end this year. he also spoke of the v.a. hospital scandal, telling the troops that caring for our veterans is a sacred obligation. a huge wildfire is forcing the evacuation of part of alas alaska's kenai peninsula. that fire known as the funny river fire has burned more than 240 square miles and is still growing. crews are fighting it by air. more than a thousand buildings are being evacuated. a 59-year-old hiker is recovering this morning after a frightening fall on oregon's mt. hood. the man had to be rescued by helicopter over the weekend after he fell, then slid about 500 feet down the mountain before landing in a cave. he's described as very banged up with leg and rib fractures, but

and 20-year-old cheng yuan hong, both from san jose. all were students at the university there. the suspect elliot rodger killed the three men in his own apartment before then gunning down three others. 13 others hurt because of the rampage including nick pasachouk from alamo. he graduated from san ramon valley high school in danville but was in santa barbara at the time visiting a friend when the suspect hit him with his car. the impact broke both of his legs. this morning his family's in santa barbara with him. they say they've seen an outpouring of support from the community. well, let's check your memorial day weather this morning with anthony. >> you're looking at clear skies for the time being, no fog in san francisco this morning. it will stay sunny all day long. temperatures will be a little bit cooler at the coastline today. however, inland you'll notice really another summer-like afternoon headed your way.

for stroke except we know there are certain conditions in the heart and irregular rhythm that many people aren't aware of that can lied to a stroke so i think that was the situation here. but she looked so healthy, and -- >> it's amazing. >> tell us about the things that people should know. the symptoms, describe them a little bit more and what someone should do. >> the easiest way to remember is the acronym fast, f.a.s.t. face, is your face drooping, is it numb? arms, is your arm numb or more weak on one side or the other? speech, are you slurring your words. can you find your words? i couldn't find my words to talk with parker, and time. it's time to call 911. >> that's a great way to remember that. >> and it seems like those symptoms are they similar to a heart attack symptoms? >> well, it can be. but i think the really positive thing about her story and the important message here is that she recognized the symptoms and got care quickly. there's a window of opportunity of about three hours where we can use our clot busting drugs and that's really what saved not only her life but her function.
