diana. today marking 25 years since her death. how the royal family is keeping her legacy alive today. this is "today in the bay." 4:30 on your wednesday morning. thanks so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get you up to date on what's going on today. mike is keeping an eye on the roads. first, we want to start with the forecast. the warmup is coming. is it today or later? >> it's time. let's get started in the tri-valley this morning. looking out in dublin. it's 57 degrees right now. we'll see more clouds moving in over the next couple of hours and clearing out for a sunny and nice and warm day. in dublin, 86 degrees. fremont will see a high of 79. low 80s for san jose. low 90s, starting to see some of the valleys coming up a couple of degrees.

92 in concord, livermore, morgan hill, santa rosa will hit a high of about 86. we'll go through when that warmup in temperatures comes in. mike, you're watching a couple of issues for the morning commute. >> kari, we have a crash, the same area as yesterday. the richmond area, getting away from the bay bridge. pretty much everything else is green. we're looking at a full stop for eastbound 80 past hill top heading up towards the carquinez bridge. if you get over to san pablo avenue or the richmond parkway, you can get around this. local streets likely to get more traffic as the morning begins. if you're on surface streets, do be careful. >> thank you very much. first this morning, police in oakland investigating a shooting and car crash they believe may have started on a nearby freeway. video shows a car hit by

multiple rounds. a witness told a photographer on the scene that a woman and child were in the car and hit by gunfire. police are not confirming any of those details and it's not clear if there's information on a possible suspect. that shooting developing along with a separate freeway shooting yesterday in the south bay. the known person impacted in that shooting was an off-duty police officer. the officer was not hit by the gunfire but the question is was he targeted and should you be concerned as you drive down the freeway? >> reporter: a clear bullet hole on a vehicle belonging to a san jose officer who police say was off duty when a bullet struck his right passenger door on northbound 101 near highway 85. >> very thankful that our officer was not injured. he could obviously have been seriously injured or killed. and so just extremely thankful for him and his family. >> reporter: the san jose police officers association president sean pritchard says the off duty

officer was on his way to work and was clearly shaken up. >> with the rise in ambushes on law enforcement officers it enters our minds right away. it's unclear at this time if this officer was targeted. >> reporter: investigators with the california highway patrol say it happened around 2:00. the officer told chp he didn't see a gun but heard a pop and described the suspect vehicle as a white hatchback with no license plates. community members say it's a tragedy but not surprising. >> definitely heard of a few others that are kind of similar. obviously, it has an affect on peoples overall fear about their safety around here. >> reporter: a few months ago, a santa clara sheriff's deputy reported being shot at as he was

driving on southbound 185. these types of incidents have been plaguing the bay area for the last three years, which has prompted the governor's office to launch a pilot program for 200 cameras in 50 freeway locations in the bay area and southern california. last week, caltrans confirmed some of those cameras may soon be going up in counties like alameda and contra costa. >> i know there's always a lot of concern from others in the public about privacy concerns, but these are really utilized for the protection of the community. police in palo alto searching for a man who sexually assaulted a woman at the palo alto transit center. it happened early saturday morning between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. that's when a woman was followed from a bus stop on university avenue and the man attacked her near a portable restroom. she was treated for minor injuries. police are working on creating a sketch for that suspect. in san mateo, police are investigating the accidental poisoning of three residents at

an assisted living facility. a worker at the atria park senior center says it happened at the memory care ward. a 93-year-old woman died. two others were sent to the hospital. it is now believed on sunday night, the three were served a red liquid. one staff member believed it was juice. the facility initially described it as dish washing liquid. we've since learned it was an industrial bathroom cleaner. one attorney believes this qualifies as negligence. >> under california law, the definition of neglect of a senior citizen is failing to protect them from safety hazards. not only here did they fail to protect them from a safety hazard, they created a safety hazard. >> the district attorney's office is not involved so far because there's no indication that the poisoning was criminal or intentional.

the incident is being investigated. the man accused of planting hidden cameras inside of a restroom at a walnut creek starbucks made his first court appearance yesterday. he is accused of installing cameras in the walnut creek starbucks on main street, but other businesses in downtown walnut creek may have been targeted as well. so far they identified nearly 40 victims at the starbucks between june 4th and july 23rd. if you were there in that timeframe and if you have further information, they would like to speak to you. moving forward on the new covid-19 vaccine booster shot. the fda is expected to give emergency use authorization any day now. this will target the newest omicron subvariant. this will also be the first covid vaccination distributed without results from human

trials. because the white house is pushing for a fall booster campaign, pfizer and moderna could only test this specific booster on mice. hard to believe, today marks 25 years since the death of princess diana. she died in a car crash in paris. a quarter century later, her legacy still touches so many. >> her sons have been outspoken in keeping their mother's legacy alive. >> reporter: prince william and prince harry will be marking this day privately with their families. there are no public official commemorations planned either. royal fans are already leaving huge posters, pictures of diana at the gates here at kensington palace. one of them says her good work continues through her sons. we'll look at the legacy diana left behind, how her sons are carrying it through and their relationship with each other. we'll hear from someone who knew them well as boys and also knew

rates to bring down inflation, even if that means pain for the economy. the dow falling nearly 300 points, the nasdaq and s&p 500 also fell about 1%. all three are on track to finish august in the red. in focus today, reports on hiring in the private sector and manufacturing. snap reportedly plans to lay off about 20% of its staff as the online advertising industry is facing a downturn. the verge says snap will begin making cuts today and target specific departments such as hardware, which is an area that snapchat's parent company has struggled to break into. it recently struck down a drone project. toyota is investing more than $5 billion in the u.s. and japan to boost production of batteries for electric vehicles. the automaker says production is set to start between 2024 and 2026. toyota, which has been successful with the prius and

do you know the way to san jose? >> yeah. quite well. >> i love that song. all right. thank you very much for joining us this morning. we want to get you started with the day. you're stepping outside, and a little cool. >> enjoy it. >> yeah. we've been talking so much about the hot weather coming our way. and it really starts to warm up in some of our interior valleys tomorrow. today, it's pretty much the same as yesterday. if you were cool and foggy yesterday, it's what you can expect today. we're headed for the upper 60s in san francisco. in san mateo, it's going to be 73 degrees. 77 in oakland and in hayward. for concord, 92. we're also seeing a lot of those low 90s making your way to the tri-valley and the south county. mostly still mid 80s for the north bay. the seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen. we're headed for hot weather. it does start to warm up for tomorrow afternoon in spots like

fairfield. we're headed up for 102 degrees there. 100 in san martin. morgan hill reaching 99. mid 90s for santa rosa. on friday, it's going to be hot, but we may also get just enough of a breeze to bring those inland temperatures down a degree or two. over the next several days, we have a strong area of high pressure that will create intense heat not only here but across the region. for southern california, the excessive heat warning starts today and it continues through tuesday. so, this is going to really start to ramp up for them. for us here in the bay area, our heat advisory, the excessive heat warning begins on saturday. this is when we'll have hotter temperatures. it continues through tuesday with the possibility of getting up to 110 degrees. let's look at ukiah and what to expect over the next ten days with those temperatures getting really hot, over 100 degrees. the peak of the heat will be on

labor day, reaching 107 degrees there. still pretty hot the rest of the week. gilroy, on monday, we'll see a high of about 107. the all-time record is 115. livermore, 113. we'll stay just below that. the dangerous heat on all of our minds going into the holiday weekend. you will have to take extra precaution to stay cool during that time. mike has been tracking a major crash in the east bay. >> yesterday it was a truck fire, today it is a deadly crash. one person has died. another person has been taken to the hospital with major injuries. the entire eastbound freeway is stopped. the deal is that you can get off at the hilltop drive exit and back on again at that exit, so you'll have to slow on the approach getting on the freeway and jumping back on. you should be fine getting over to the carquinez bridge.

if you join at the richmond parkway, you're fine. that is, again, affecting folks away from the bay bridge and heading towards the carquinez bridge. right now traffic is relatively light. a smooth drive there as well as the rest of the bay. >> thank you very much. 4:49. who will be the next mayor of oakland? eight candidates had the chance last night to try to prove to a captive audience they can reshape a city with some big-city problems. as "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd reports, public safety is at the top of the list. >> my name is greg hodge. >> reporter: greg hodge is one of eight candidates for oakland mayor who showed up for a debate hosted at lanity college. libby schaaf is termed out. >> if you look at my track record when i was on city council, part of the budget was permanent funding for seniors. >> our seniors are terrorized. absolutely afraid for their life in our city. >> reporter: public safety at the top of every candidate's list as the number one issue

that needs attention. >> accountability is the number one pry priority for our budget. we need to prioritize hiring more police officers. >> reporter: this debate comes after oakland is reeling from a 13-year-old shot and wounded by another juvenile and days after elders in asian communities are being attacked and killed. troubling times for people in the audience looking for someone to lead the city. >> i want to hear plans and strategies versus something i can hear from talking to my neighbor. >> reporter: candidates who are current city councilmembers threw out strategies. >> i want to make sure we continue to invest in our macro programs, this is our mental health response program. this will alleviate the calls that opd is getting so they can focus on violent crime. >> we have to demonstrate more than a 30% solve rate for violent crimes. we have to double that solve rate. that requires adding civilian staff and sworn officers that
