work crews making progress since we showed you how much they had to do earlier, all caused by what neighbors called the troublesome tree that finally came down. this usually quiet megia seven neighborhood on , you wait near springer rolled was jolted just before 10:00 a.m. when 75 foot pine tree fell taking down power lines and damaging the water system. this resident, that asked not to be shown, says that falling trees are not that unusual in los altos but not like this. transit we tend to see it more during storms. this morning when it happened i was sitting in the front room, i heard a crack and bought lightning hit the pole, power pole cracked at the top. i walked out and saw the tree down. >> reporter: what are your thoughts? >> i don't think we wanted the tree around much longer anyway and it looks like we get a quick cleanup. i am raj mathai. cleanup , yes. removal and repairs take longer. pg&e crews

are busy, utility says 790 customers without power in the south bay, 180 on the peninsula due to various problems. >> when the trees fell, it traded damage to the power poles . pg&e is making it safe, they will remove the tree from around the power lines and restring the power through the new power poles. >> reporter: the tree damage a fire hydrant and six-inch water make cutting off water to 18 cal water customers, one of them who also asked not to be on camera, said that that particular tree has had issues before. >> this could have been worse. every time i drive under the tree i'm terrified and speed up because it is huge and i'm afraid it will fall monday on my car. >> cal water cannot make repairs until pg&e removes the tree that they will not remove the tree until they finish repairs and restore power and it could be a long night.

civil rights attorneys claim the video shows deputies mistreating an innocent woman. they say it started when the 31- year-old was physically attacked another woman. that happen in august 2022 inside a haywood courtroom. her attorney says instead of helping her, the deputies attacked her and she was taken to the hospital. she claims deputies tried to prevent her from getting doctor ordered ct scan and deputies repeatedly hit her again before taking her to jail. >> this is not the type of treatment you would expect or tolerate of the people sworn to protect us. she had a right to receive medical treatment, common courtesy and decency. none of those things were afforded that day. i am raj mathai. the sheriff department says the video does not show the whole story . in a statement, the release clips are limited and skewed depiction of the incident and do not represent the totality of what occurred. we learn arrest has been

made nine months after hit and run crash in san jose. surveillance video shows the moment the crash happened in march 2023 near flint avenue. we have frozen before the impact area investigators say a man was helping a family whose car britain when he was hit. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. investigators used a license plate reader to track down the truck involved with that crash area in december they tracked down the driver at the san francisco international airport . he had been booked into the san mateo county jail. anyone with information about that crash is asked to call police. group of silicon valley nonprofits are wading into hot topics, they say something is wrong with the way schools are funded. the group says the state formula at base of school funding on property taxes which means a more economically disadvantaged areas are likely to get less money.

>> reporter: education advocates say classes like robotics are, on the west side of silicon valley, the kind of classes that help prepare the future tech workforce. the education foundations has on average that school district, west side received $24,000 in state funding per student per year. things look different on the east side. why don't you provide robotics to your students? transit we don't have the money. >> reporter: education foundation says these districts get roughly $11,000 in state funding per student per year. that is less than half of the westside allotment. dr. lisa andrew believes the state funding formula, based on property taxes, is flawed. i am raj mathai. how will the students be able to compete to become the workforce of silicon valley? until every child in our county and state receive the same

allocation for their education, we can't talk about being equitable in our state when it comes to education. >> reporter: dr. andrew says the students would have opportunity to enroll in robotics classes and teachers would not have to get part-time jobs to make ends meet. her team is partnering with several other powerful education nonprofits to form the east side education initiative. the initiative aims to fill in funding gaps by providing grants. more importantly, the group hopes to force lawmakers to change the state funding formula. the campaign is called zip code, code red. >> absolutely code red. i am raj mathai. the superintendent notes that of silicon valley is interested creating diverse workforce, they should be pushing for school funding equality as well. tran night diverse communities

ready to take the jobs, they need to be educated and we need the tools to educate them. >> reporter: reach out to california department of education for, but have yet to hear back. damian trujillo with nbc bay area news . new information on the effort to bring so-called new city to solano county. the group is called california forever. the group adjusted its proposal it wants on the november ballot . it got pushed back from county leaders over where they want to build and environmental and economic impact. the new city located where the yellow area is on the map. this is solano county. it is reducing its original size at 18,000 acres to about 17,000 acres. this is what the group hopes the new community wi look like, these are renderings . green walkable city with middle-class homes and good paying jobs. the ballot proposal guarantees 15,000 new jobs, $200 million
