7:00 pm
. i'm raj mathai. next on "nbc bay area news tonight." we are on the eve of another powerful storm, this one with a lot of wind. we have an hour-by-hour timeline as we head into the weekend. also, no more right turns on red. san francisco preparing to ban it in a large section of the city. that's my guy right there. the king of tight end u, man.
7:01 pm
>> plus travis kelce giving some love to 49ers star george kittle. and would you shell out some serious cash for apple's new goggles? we're going to tell you about the vision pro. good evening. this is "nbc bay area news tonight." i'm raj mathai. we have made it to friday, but be careful here. this weekend could get dicey. we've been saying this a lot lately. another significant storm is on our doorstep. let's take a look at our exclusive stormranger radar. it's the most precise radar in the market. this is the next set of storms. they have the potential to bring problems not just here to the bay area but across california. in fact, governor newsom mobilizing more than 8,000 emergency crews. not just rain, the sierra is getting dumped on. several spots could see at least a few feet of snow this weekend. lake tahoe resorts, they're excited, getting ready for it. this video sent to us from bear
7:02 pm
valley. let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. good for tahoe, but we've got to be careful. also we've got to be careful around here. what are you seeing here? >> this storm is speeding up by an entire day. so 24 hours sooner than any models were predicting just a few days ago. second thing is the heavy rain line that really looks centralized over central and southern california, that's now moving closer towards us. >> that's our impact here. >> yeah. we are going to get in on this heavy rain impact here. hang with me. the storm track itself is right over california. that's why the whole state is going to get hit. the system is making this southerly hook so to speak, coming in from the south. we don't often see that. that's why everyone from san diego to los angeles right up to northern california is going to get hit with the heavy rain and also the gusty winds. >> usually it comes down this way, the north bay gets hit. now it looks like the south bay first. >> that is the kind of unusual
7:03 pm
thing about this storm system and the timeline. we've got a lot of things to show you here. we're going to key frame here the most important things. so tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon we're just into some spotty rain. storm system is offshore. by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow heavy downpours developing in the pacific. then we get into some rain starting at 8:00 p.m. >> saturday night. >> that's right. so it is much, much sooner. i do think we'll see widespread rain, heavy pockets by 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night. the zone i'm concerned about, though, that we really think we could get into some street flooding, rivers rising very fast, begins at 2:00 in the morning on sunday. you got this red showing up on the radar. that is some of the heaviest that our models can pick up on. so 2:00 a.m. sunday through 3:004:00, 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 in the morning on sunday, we'll be into the worst of it. we should see it try to break up a little bit here as we head into the afternoon on sunday, beginning at 1:00.
7:04 pm
we'd start to see that rain trying to break up a little bit. >> okay. in terms of the wind, you've been mentioning throughout the week we could have a windy weekend. that leads a lot of people to be concerned about trees falling and power going out. >> we do have winds that could get up to 60 miles per hour. look at these rain totals too. saturday we're okay. we're half to three-quarters of an inch saturday night. we add on sunday evening 1 to 3 inches for the bay area. santa cruz mountains in that gray spot could get over 4 inches of rain. and not only the bull's-eye here but all the way down to southern california. >> look at l.a. >> that's right. there's a lot of that gray color down there on our key at the top. that's 4-plus inches. they're looking at flash flooding throughout that could turn life-threatening, especially in southern california. you talked about the wind. i said we had a lot to go through here. so let's get this in here because this is what could also cause some trees to come down and those power outages. saturday night starts to pick
7:05 pm
up, 20 to 30 for a lot of the lower elevations. mountains will get into 50 miles per hour saturday at 11:00. as we head into sunday morning, we're still in that situation, picking up more in the lower elevations. 30-plus miles per hour. we'd stay with the gusty winds through sunday afternoon. >> wow, that pops up. >> 52. 36 san jose. 44 oakland. that magenta color, that's for the mountains. 50-plus miles per hour. so i really think the strongest gusts are coming on sunday when those trees could come down. we'd start to see the wind taper off by sunday evening. so we get the rain starting saturday night. heavy overnight. then the wind really hits us as we head into sunday. >> hopefully not too many people are going to work this weekend. stay off the roads because there's going to be some trouble out there. thank you, jeff. another great resource for the weather, our free nbc bay area app. you can track the stormy weather minute by minute using our
7:06 pm
stormranger radar. some other headlines we're following on this friday night. a quick jolt and a lot of people felt it. a 3.0 magnitude earthquake near the san francisco zoo. the quake struck around 1:30 this afternoon right off the coast there. the epicenter was about two miles west of the zoo. no reports of any injuries or damage but a lot of people felt it it. also tonight, as we've been reporting extensively, the businesses leaving oakland because of crime. mayor sheng thao, who was on this program just last night, saying her city is working on the problem and touting a 40% reduction in crime in the haganberger road area which is near the airport. now another painful reminder. a group of friends from texas were robbed at gunpoint while gassing up their rental suv. it happened on monday at the 76 gas station right there on haganberger road. this video shows the group
7:07 pm
robbing the friends and stealing their luggage. the mother of one of the victims is a lawyer and is now offering a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to arrests in this case. >> it does not have to be the norm where everybody says, oh, that's just oakland. oh, don't gas in oakland. you should know better. we didn't. we did not know better. there should be some warnings. this thrifty rental car should be warning people. there should be signs up. the gas station had nothing. there was no police presence. >> seeing people get hurt, and you can't do anything about it. just, you know, they're customers. the place that you own is supposed to be a safe zone. >> some rental cars companies do warn customers about the dangers of crime there in oakland. we mentioned mayor thao. the question tonight, is she doing enough? actually that's an ongoing question. and are other city leaders doing enough. you can watch our interview with
7:08 pm
mayor sheng thao about this issue. we posted the interview in its entirety at nbcbayarea.com. well, across the bay in san francisco, there's a new plan to bring in historically black colleges and universities. today mayor london breed joined representatives from hbcus, city departments, and tech companies to talk about the proposal. it's part of a broader strategy just to revitalize san francisco's ailing downtown corridor. the first step will happen this summer when hbcu programs will formally be offered in the city. there's room for 28 students with the goal of expanding. >> what this looks like long-term is a real possibility to have historically black college campuses right here in san francisco, where they are choosing to lease space specifically in our downtown area and providing a satellite location for students. >> they're trying to get creative here. as part of the summer programs, the university of san francisco, usf, will provide the student
7:09 pm
housing, and san francisco state will offer the classroom space. all right. let's move on. 48 hours from now, the 49ers are wheels up for las vegas. now, before they leave, they got some heavy lifting to do. the 49ers back at practice today, and once again in the rain. but keep in mind weather will not be an issue in las vegas since the super bowl will be played indoors in the raiders stadium. 49ers, though, need to get their defense straight after their erratic performances in their first two playoff wins. it's not just defense. the offense also needs to stay sharp. >> bowl week. >> we all understand, you know, the stage that this game is going to be played on. you know, you don't want to get to vegas with all the stuff going on and let all the other stuff on the outside get in the way. so, you know, fred and all the vets really have been just harping on every moment right now this week is huge. >> yeah, you got to focus this week because next week, it's kind of a circus with all the media members out there, with the family and friends out there, and all the fans.
7:10 pm
missing from practice today was george kittle. at least the bulk of practice. out with a toe injury. we'll get more on that in a moment. also today, kittle getting some love from kansas city chiefs star travis kelce. >> that's my guy right there. the king of tight end u, man. he's the best tight end in the league, deservingly so this year. he's been playing lights out, playing the best football of his career, and really catapulting that san fran team through the playoffs, man. i couldn't be more proud of him and couldn't be more honored to go up against george in another super bowl. can't say enough amazing things about who he is as a guy and who his family is. can't say a bad thing about him, man. >> joining us now is nbc's anthony flores, who has been at 49ers hq all week. travis kelce has quite a platform now. >> oh, yeah. >> those are some really sweet statements about george kittle. >> he's earned that respect. not only does he catch. he blocks. if you happened to see that
7:11 pm
viral clip when he's pumping up brock purdy on the sideline. they're getting killed, and he's like stay positive, stay focused, we can do it. he's got a lot of energy. >> it's coming from kelce, who is a future hall of famer. >> who beat him out for all pro. i think george kittle was a little disappointed that he wasn't the pro bowl starter. travis kelce has got the most votes. so, yeah, a lot of respect. >> two great tight ends we're going to see in the super bowl. kittle, toe injury. i don't think it's major. what's the buzz from headquarters? >> it's serious enough to keep him out of practice the last two days. when he walked up to the podium, everyone was watching. he says it's not a concern. kyle shanahan, not a concern. he wasn't practicing. they say no problem. he's playing next sunday. >> it's a two-week break. that's the good news here. sha various ward said something today about, hey, we're going to get to vegas. i'm going to kind of party a bit, but then i'm going to take
7:12 pm
it easy. >> caught everyone off guard because kittle comes up and says we stay focused. >> he's won a super bowl with the chiefs when they beat the 49ers. i'm sure kyle shanahan didn't like to hear that. >> it's honest. this is interesting because we were both out. you were out in miami four years ago. that's a big party town, a lot of night life. the 49ers were on their best behavior. vegas the same way. this is a really professional, buttoned up team. >> absolutely not. you mentioned miami. they lost four years ago. that loss still haunts many of those players. sure, there are a lot of new faces but the core group from both teams is still there. the 49ers want to win this game. they know it's a legacy game. they've been hurting ever since they lost. i would expect the 49ers to be focused and on their best behavior because they want to win on super sunday. they want to be at their best.
7:13 pm
i feel like they're ready. their defense has not played well in the postseason. we've all seen it. they've played great in the second half. brock purdy, the knock on him, he couldn't come back. he's done it, but i feel like their focused and ready. can they stop patrick mahomes, travis kelce? >> we will see in las vegas. you'll be reporting with our team beginning all next week. >> i'm looking forward to it. i know you have those dinner reservations ready to go. >> thank you, buddy. as we gear up the super bowl, we are teami up with the "today to host a 49ers pep rally. how faithful are you? you can join us fray, february 9th, the friday before the super bowl, at 4:00 a.m. that's not a typo. 4:00 a.m. at the lot at bishop rah. the city center there in san ramon. dress up in your niners gear and you just might get on the "today" show with al roker and savannah, the whole gang, including our morning news team. up next, turning right on red could soon be banned in a large part of san francisco.
7:14 pm

growing up, my parents wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer. those are good careers! but i chose a different path. first, as mayor and then in the legislature. i enshrined abortion rights in our california constitution. in the face of trump, i strengthened hate crime laws and lowered the costs for the middle class. now i'm running to bring the fight to congress. you were always stubborn. and on that note, i'm evan low, and i approve this message. welcome back to "nbc bay area news tonight." it's a law in new york. no right on red. now it could be coming to much of san francisco in a much bigger way. the transit authority is moving
7:17 pm
ahead with a plan to protect people crossing the street. here's a map of the proposed area where right on red could be banned. it includes most of downtown. you see it in red here. this would be an extension of a pilot program that's already happening in the gray, in the tenderloin, where turning right on red is prohibited at 54 intersections. so does this tactic actually work? sfmta says since the no turn on red signs were posted in the tenderloin, they saw some key improvements. 92% of drivers obeyed the new restrictions, and most importantly, crashes between cars and pedestrians dropped. the planned expansion of this program is now being reviewed by the police and fire departments. the public will also get a say. joining us now is luke bornheimer, a bike and pedestrian safety advocate that's been pushing for this change for years. luke, nice to have you on the program. last near as you might recall, a 4-year-old girl was killed in a stroller at a crosswalk near
7:18 pm
oracle park. someone turning right on red. is this part of your motivation to get this done? >> yeah. thanks for having me on, raj. yeah, that was one of the motivators for me. you know, i know that no turn on red is a proven safety improvement implemented in other cities, and the tragic death of that 4-year-old really prompted me to say that we need to be thinking more citywide about improvements that make our streets safer and can be implemented quickly and easily across the city. >> luke, what's the pushback here? is it that no right on red creates more of a backup on city streets? >> you know, i think just generally in san francisco, change is hard for people, and so even when something is proven to be safer, there's just apprehension to change anything in san francisco. and so, you know, in times like that, and especially given our roadway safety crisis, you just need leadership. so a lot of the public is looking to mayor breed to approve this policy and urge
7:19 pm
sfmta to approve a citywide no turn on red policy. >> will this be approved by sfmta, and if not, why? >> so right now there has been no plan to approve a citywide policy, and instead the agency is trying to move intersection by intersection to approve this. but this is just a slow and bureaucratic process. i think it's just an apprehension to do something that they perceive might be upsetting to the public when, in reality, i think the public would really appreciate the mayor and sfmta moving quickly to approve a citywide policy. >> we saw that map there in red of the proposed areas where it could be expanded. it looks fairly optimistic that this could happen, at least in the downtown area here and south of market. when could this happen? what are you projecting? as early as this summer or next year? >> yeah. so i think the downtown implementation could happen, you know, within months. a citywide policy could be
7:20 pm
approved and, you know, started to implement this year. but really there needs to be action taken by the sfmta board and ideally the mayor would come out in support of a citywide no turn on red policy as soon as possible to get that ball rolling. if that approval was to go through, the agency could start installing signs throughout the city essentially immediately. >> as you said, it takes a little while to get things done in san francisco. luke, appreciate your time tonight. >> thanks so much, raj. let's move on now. apple has a new product. in fact, its first new product in seven years. it looks like a pair of high-tech goggles, and it comes with a big-time price tag. today the vision pro went on sale. it's apple's version of a vr headset. apps appear in 3-d, and games are meant to fell more immersive. like you're actually there. you can now see the vision pro in stores. we stopped by the palo alto apple store today. the initial crowds were not as big as those who often line up to buy iphones, but they are
7:21 pm
dedicated. >> i got up at 5:00 a.m., actually 4:30 a.m. to be on time and get my vision pro. i can't be more excited. i do believe this is the future of computing. >> okay. so how much? that's the big question. vision pro, the starting price is $3,500. when we return, we're going to check in with jeff once again as this big storm is coming into town tomorrow. this is a live look in downtown san jose. you're watching "nbc bay area you're watching "nbc bay area news tonight." not just any whiteboard... ...katie porter's whiteboard is one way she's: [news anchor] ...often seen grilling top executives of banks, big pharma, even top administration officials. katie porter. never taken corporate pac money - never will. leading the fight to ban congressional stock trading. and the only democrat who opposed wasteful “earmarks” that fund politicians' pet projects. katie porter. focused on your challenges - from lowering housing costs to fighting climate change. shake up the senate - with democrat katie porter. i'm katie porter and i approve this message.

welcome back. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. we want to give you the latest fix on where this storm is. right now it's a couple hundred miles offshore, so this will be picking up rainfall as we head through tomorrow. look, i think through the morning, early afternoon, we're just in some spotty rain chances. but the storm will be offshore by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. this will start to bring that rain back tomorrow evening. we get into some of the heaviest rainfall here 2:00 a.m. on sunday, all the way through about 10:00 a.m. on sunday. then we should start to see that rainfall beginning to break up by sunday afternoon. rainfall totals on saturday night, a half to three-quarters. but you add on sunday morning, 1 to 3 inches for the bay area. 4 inches for the santa cruz mountains. maybe higher. same thing for parts of the north bay. that's why those creeks and
7:25 pm
streams will be rising pretty quickly. we could get into some street flooding because of that heavy rain on sunday morning. on the seven-day forecast, rain breaks up monday and tuesday. dry on wednesday. and a few more spotty shower chances thursday, friday. so once we get over this storm system late saturday into sunday morning, raj, we will get some breaks in here next week, and that will be really great. again, that wind on sunday, too, may be up to 60 miles per hour. >> yeah, it's going to be an active weekend, and hopefully not too much damage. that's going to do it for us at 7:00. for everyone here at nbc bay area, thanks for joining us. we hope you enjoy your evening and have a safe weekend. we hope to s you back at ee
