right now at 6:00, a super tuesday showdown. voters in 16 states heading to the polls today in what may be a make-or-break moment for the republican presidential nomination. we'll take you live to washington. plus, the key battle on california's ballot. we're following the latest on the race to fill dianne feinstein's u.s. senate seat. this is "today in the bay."

good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. super tuesday, we'll get to more of that in just a bit. first, let's talk about the forecast. vianey arana is in for kari this morning. >> we are in a bit of a break before it becomes more widespread, but we'll take it. here is a look at satellite radar. we are monitoring this low pressure system, and even though it might look like it's going to pack a punch just based on satellite imagery, it is a weaker storm system more focused to the north and also just off the coast. so if we do see some spotty showers, it will mostly be north of the golden gate, if you live in san jose, you're likely not going to see any of that. but you will see the overcast skies, a mix of sun and clouds. daytime highs will be in the 50s around 8:00, by 12:00, we're going to be in the 60s, and then we'll max out in the low 60s through the afternoon. similar conditions for dublin. you can see the cloud cover. but the sunrise looks beautiful.

speaking of the roads, let's take a look at how the traffic is doing. we're looking down at the roads. we're looking at northbound, the taillights that were kind of broken up for a bit. there may have been slowing and a possible traffic break just shy of this shot and outside of our view, reports of a disabled vehicle north 880. we see slowing from hegenberger. the camera is right about here. we'll track that and make sure there are no other issues. filling in the toll plaza, typical patterns around the bay. >> thanks, mike. today is super tuesday, with polling places already starting to open in some states. in california, voters can start casting their ballots one hour from now, and there's a lot on the line. >> we have team coverage this morning covering everything you need to know if you cast your ballot. brie jackson will have the latest from washington on the national outlook. first, california voters by tonight will most likely know

who is left in the race to fill one very important u.s. senate seat, replacing the late dianne feinstein this november. >> "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is here this morning, and that race all comes down to one republican and three democrats. >> reporter: yeah, so there are a lot more candidates on the ballot, but realistically these are the four most viable candidates, and for the first time in a long time, republican voters are hopeful that there will be an opportunity for a more conservative voice speaking for california in the senate. republican steve garvey, a former pro baseball player with very little political experience has risen to the top of the polls, along with front-runner adam schiff. southern california's katie porter was in the bay area just yesterday, and of course congresswoman barbara lee, who we know well in the bay area, has great name recognition across the state but not a lot of campaign cash. san francisco's gop chairman was

out hanging campaign signs last night. he was pleased that california conservatives now have a chance at winning a statewide race. with so many democratic candidates, the vote is pretty split and with fewer people voting, there are also fewer people registering as democrats. >> that, combined with an excellent and outstanding voter registration number that showed the democrats losing about 40,000 voters and the republicans gaining, i think it was about 60,000, a net increase between the two of 100,000. >> reporter: if you looked at your ballot or sample ballot, you know there are two senate races. they are both for senator dianne feinstein's seat, one is to fill what's left of the term, the other is for the full six-year term. if you vote by mail, there is still time to drop your ballot off at a vote center. you can drop it off in a regular mailbox. it does have to be postmarked

today. laura, i know that's on your to-do list. >> it's in my bag. thank you very much. california is one of more than a dozen states heading to the polls this super tuesday. and former president trump can already considering himself a winner when it comes to a critical ruling by the u.s. high court. "today in the bay"'s brie jackson joins us live from washington. gop challenger nikki haley is certainly hoping for a major fundraising boost just to stay in the race. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura. this is the biggest election day on the primary calendar. more than a third of all available delegates for both republicans and democrats are up for grabs today. former president trump started the week off with a legal win, the supreme court ruled he can stay on the ballot in colorado. still, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley is not giving in, staying in the race after winning the d.c. primary sunday. she's still well behind the number of delegates needed to get the gop nomination. some voters are keeping a close eye on former president trump's

court cases. >> i would like to see where some of these cases go about -- surrounding the insurrection and kind of see how that plays out. >> reporter: and the former president is also fighting off more court battles with his presidential immunity case coming before the court next month. >> brie, new polling numbers show former president trump leading president biden in a potential 2020 rematch within the margin of error. the same numbers show that both men are very unpopular. >> reporter: that's right. so "the new york times" poll found that both men have high unfavorable numbers, but people have a lower opinion of president biden than former president trump. and this is something we see nikki haley point out. she continues to try to push herself as the alternative to both former president trump and president biden. but so far she still remains far

behind former president trump in the delegate race, and so it does appear as though we could be headed toward that 2020 rematch. >> it will be interesting to see. she's really trying to hold on and stick it out. big day ahead. thank you so much. one south bay race today, not a primary, but the election for mayor of san jose. incumbent matt mahan squaring off against tyrone wade. this election results will have the final say. mahan is serving out a two-year term because the year he was elected san jose voters chose to move the mayoral election to align with presidential years in hopes of improving voter turnout. we've got you covered for tonight's election results. scan the qr code on the screen that will take you on our elections guide and you can head to nbcbayarea.com. once you get there, click on the super tuesday tab at the top of the page. we've got the information you

need on the candidates, races and how to cast your ballot. san francisco's newly named emporium centre is facing more of the same. it is reportedly losing two more tenants. san francisco's business times was first to report the popular cosmetic chains are set to leave. closures include adidas, and the lego store. the mall owner is talking about pivoting into a newly branded detail and entertainment defendant station. major highways in tahoe finally back home following blizzard-like conditions this past weekend. 80 is once again open but drivers must be prepared for slower traffic with only one lane open in areas with heavier snow. caltrans says crews have been working around the clock to clear snow from the highways with the blizzard leaving behind

nearly 11 feet of snow. resorts are feeling the impact as well. video from the sierra at tahoe, crews are digging out several feet of snow. it will be a slow process. >> it looks like the snow will stick around and we'll have good spring skiing. if it stays this way with another round of snow showers coming through this week, that's going to help boost the snowpack even more. it's going to look good. let's look at some of the numbers from this weekend. right now, though, a live look in lake tahoe. it's about 32 degrees. so chilly, but we are still seeing some snow showers for some parts of the northern region. if you notice here, accumulations, we're talking less than 2 inches. so not impressive out of this system. however, what was impressive was that blizzard from the weekend. look at some of the snowfall totals, sugar bowl, 127 inches, palisades 93, soda springs 89

inches, and the sierra snow lab 77. just for perspective, in january we started out at about 28%. we were falling a bit behind in the water year. and now we are at 104% for the statewide average. we are officially above where we're supposed to be for not only the sierra snowpack, but also the water year in general when it comes to rainfall. i'll have a closer look for what to expect for the remainder of the week. let's get a check of the gas prices. >> snow totals are going up and similarly the gas prices are also going up. let's start in contra costa county. their low in concord is $4.09 a gallon at world on monument boulevard. next we're going to head down to the south bay. sunnyvale's best is great gas at $4.07 on north matilda. we'll head north for prices under $4, the best is $3.96 on tennessee street. thank you for sharing the prices that you find around the bay. at the roadways, we have a

smooth flow of traffic. a calm drive right now except for oakland where we had a disturbance. there was a disabled vehicle northbound, still slow on the sensors. it actually did stop for a few minutes. we've turned the camera. the headlights are coming toward the coliseum. there was a traffic break. from san leandro, it will slow approaching 98 and then clear toward the bay bridge. back to you. the growing popularity of weight loss drugs is putting pressure on gym owners and today the new strategies gyms are adapting to help stay afloat while supporting customers who use the drugs. it's getting to be spring break time. the airlines talking about some of the more popular destinations. let's take you to the futures. coming off all-time highs. looks like the dow will booze about a third of a percent at the open. california should be covered in spring flowers any time, but

executives are once again suing musk for not paying them out after firing them. this is musk walking into twitter for the first time as the new owner. president biden will host a joint meeting between the federal trade commission and the department of justice today, looking for unfair and illegal pricing. inflation is way down, but some prices on certain goods remain high and the white house blames that on corporate greed. just ahead of today's meeting, the consumer financial protection bureau will announce it's limiting how much credit card companies can charge you for missed or late payments to $8. that will be the limit. obviously they can still crank up your interest rates as a response to you not paying your bills. but they will be limited to charging $8 in fines. united airlines says the busiest day to fly this spring will be march 22nd. we're just entering the beginning of spring break season, cancun and other warm places topped the list. but united says london, and for

the first time, tokyo, are also popular destinations. and the booth used in the last seen of the hbo series "the sopranos" went up for auction and sold for $80,000. if you've never seen the show, it has a mysterious ending. nobody really knows what happens because the scene cuts to black. you can buy props from tv and movies from legitimate outlets. i have a couple at my house, just little minor things. one is an award that was on somebody's desk in the show "silicon valley" on hbo. they're affordable, because there might be 20 or 30 things on the desk and they're selling all of them. just sort of fun. >> who purchased it for $80,000, and where will it go? >> right. and the jukebox not included. he famous by starts playing

"don't stop believing" and it wasn't included in the sale. >> get your money ready. thanks, scott. well, the recent surge in weight loss drugs is now having an unusual ripple effect on many of the nation's gyms. it has some people shedding their gym memberships, along with the loss of pounds. many gyms are coming up with curated training programs and health regimens specifically for people who take drugs like ozempic and mounjaro. one personal trainer tells "today" he's trying to ensure the drugs and workouts go hand in hand. >> we're now trying to figure out how can we assist people in getting the best possible results. people need to maintain a really good exercise regimen and a nutrition regimen on top of it. >> doctors recommend patients monitor potential side effects and focus on strength training because muscle loss is a potential drawback for people

using the drugs. they also say patients should avoid working out on an empty stomach. you can watch the full story all coming up on the "today" show straight ahead at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." there's a treat on the horizon for fans of california's iconic wildflower season. >> the state park says this year's super bloom is expected to be, quote, spectacular. this is following recent storms. state leaders are reminding everyone to be respectful of this year's display and to take photos, not the flowers, while staying on designated trails. point reyes national seashore, mount davidson and russian ridge preserve are some of the places in the bay area which have seen wildflowers bloom. >> we don't need the wildfires. >> get out there and get your cameras ready. >> i like the video, stay on the trails, and there's kids. >> i see people doing angels.

no! >> it is beautiful. and with all this rain, and i love how green is hills are right now. keep in mind, those little flowers host a lot of little creatures. for the sake of our ecosystem and if you don't like bugs, leave the flowers alone. >> there's a deterrent. >> let's take a look right now in san francisco. look at this, a little bit of fog. 51 degrees, as the sun begin to say come up. this is when you're going to start to notice the gray and cloud cover. now, overall we're seeing 40s across the board to start. we have a couple of 50s, including san francisco, and also in through oakland. but let's take a look right now at satellite radar, because this is the system that's going to bring primarily cloud cover for today, but eventually will get spotty showers. so follow along with me. at around 9:30 in the morning, notice we do still get some of that spotty activity through parts of napa, fairfield, concord, san francisco, and around the peninsula as well. but it's very spotty. if you notice, around 3:00, a

lot of the spotty chances will move on through napa, santa rosa, we're talking sacramento, fairfield. in through the tri-valley/concord stretch. the rest of us will get clearing and sunshine. but by tonight, so this is overnight into wednesday morning, we get the increase in fog and cloud cover for a bit, and then heading into the 9:00 hour, areas in the south bay will start to get some of that rain. at around 9:00 a.m., palo alto, san jose, parts of santa cruz, and this is what i'm looking at with a little bit more of a higher definition. this is at around 4:30. remember i mentioned the chance of thunderstorm activity? well, if you notice here, right around 4:00 we do get some decent cells that begin to pop up on the model runs where you see the red and orange glow. that could bring a chance for isolated thunderstorms. there is still some instability. we're also monitoring the chance for thunderstorms for some parts of the sierra. hold off on the travel. check your travel conditions before hitting the road. by thursday and friday we do have some clearing, we're

talking dry conditions. rain totals, not impressive, which is good. we're caught up for the water rain year. a lot of areas will see less than half an inch, less than a tenth, trace amounts through the south bay. daytime highs will be comfortable, upper 60s by the end of the week, and for the rest of your seven-day forecast, we get a mix of sunshine. we also get the chance for rain by tomorrow, and then again heading into saturday. let's get a check of the roads with mike. >> we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. since the last time we take a look at the last report, there were flashing lights. there was a crash reported around the toll plaza itself. the tow truck has cleared through the area and i do see traffic in the lanes moving smoothly. it doesn't look like a major issue for the berkeley curve. a smooth drive, just general build from richmond all the way toward berkeley and the emeryville area. a little slowing for highway 24 coming in, and that's traditional. same pattern for 37, highway 4.

for the afternoon will be cloudy, with daytime highs hovering in the upper 50s, low 60s by the end of this week. we'll keep some of that sunshine and talk more about the rain chances coming up. back to you. it is 6:31 right now. super tuesday is here and polls open in about a half hour throughout the state of california. >> we have live team coverage to get you ready to cast your ballot if you haven't already done so. our ginger conejero saab is breaking down the controversial proposition all californians will be asked to vote on. >> first, let's check in with "today in the bay"'s bob redell joining us live from the santa clara registrar of voters' office in san jose. do they know what the turnout is expected to be, bob? >> reporter: they do. it's lower than expected. i'll have more on that in just a moment. in about an hour and a half, workers will come back to continue counting the ballots. the ballots are already in here. these are mail-in ballots that

have been sent over for the past several days. the beaut of our democracy, the elections are free and transparent. there's a lock on the cage to make sure no one has access to the ballots until it's time to be counted. the registrar's office was telling me that the public is invited to come in. they can sign in and observe the elections. that's why they have the red tape on the floor, so there's places public can stand and not get in the way of counting. you've got ballots and then here is the room where the ballots will be counted by machine starting later this morning. and, again, you have open windows, so this is a very transparent process. another example of how our democracy works. as far as the turnout goes, and that's the beauty of our democracy, you're not forced to vote, but you're definitely encouraged to vote, the registrar voters' office here in santa clara county tells me that voter turnout among the ballots turned in so far is at 15%,

slightly lower than normal, and they are only expecting an overall turnout of 35% to 45%, which is below expectations. >> of course it's disappointing. we want 100%. we want everybody to make a difference. we don't want a small majority making decisions for the majority of the people. we have a million voters in our county and we want everybody to have a say and make their vote count. >> what do you say to people who don't vote? >> why not? it's your opportunity to make your voice heard. no one is going to hear you if you don't speak into the mic. >> reporter: okay, polls open statewide at 7:00 a.m. and they will be open until 8:00 p.m. if you have a mail-in ballot, they must be postmarked or dropped off at a ballot box by today. so you can vote in person, here in santa clara county there's a number of voting centers, a number of ballot boxes. if you are going to be sending it via the united states postal

service and you put it into a mailbox, make sure that mailbox has a pickup time after you drop it off. if you drop it into the mailbox at 3:00 and the pickup time already happened at 1:00, it's not going to get picked up until tomorrow, which means it won't be postmarked until tomorrow. it's got to be postmarked by today, march 5th. my youngest daughter, this is her first election and i had to explain the whole thing with the postmark for her. >> you can always drop it off at your polling place, too. she can get that coveted "i voted" sticker. >> fun times at the bob redell house. hour election coverage continues this morning. we're going to take things to san francisco. >> let's check in with ginger conejero saab live in the city this morning. there's really a lot at stake with some of these ballot measures. >> reporter: that is right, guys. good morning to you. that's why up to the last hours leading up to today, some of the biggest names in state politics

were here in san francisco, governor gavin newsom joined san francisco mayor london breed, the lieutenant governor and district attorney to make a final push in advocating for a yes on proposition 1. if approved, prop 1 would authorize the use of over $6 billion in bonds to build mental health treatment facilities. it would also build permanent and supportive housing for the homeless and help homeless veterans. opponents say california doesn't have the money, especially with a looming multibillion dollar deficit. they point out the state has a poor track record of spending voter approved bonds on what they are supposed to be spent on. some other ballot measures on the radar, proposition b would set a minimum police staffing level here in san francisco that would increase the roughly 1,500 officers to a mandatory minimum of just over 2,000 officers within five years.

now, opponents to prop b say the city cannot afford having additional officers and it might mean that a tax hike will need to be voted on in the future to fund it. another measure in san francisco concerning sfpd is on the ballot. that one is proposition e, which would change some of the rules for policing. supporters say it would remove the red tape and paperwork for officers, allowing for more time patrolling the streets and less time writing reports. it also permits wider use for technology in criminal investigations and pursuits. opponents to the measure say it's over the top and sweeping, it says it can achieve its goals removing the red tape with existing tools. >> this changes people's lives, literally. it's like one thing i can do that can change people's lives, affect my neighborhood, affect my community across the board, so we have to do it. it gets down to a small number of votes in a lot of places, so

vote. >> reporter: and regardless of how you vote, like that man, you can drop off your ballot. it is important to make your voice heard, as bob just said. you can drop it off as the drop boxes, go to the polling places which open shortly. this is also where we are, the golden gate valley library is also a polling place. there are a number of them across the city. and across the bay area, really. so today is an important day to make your voice be heard. we're looking out for people who are going to come say hi as they drop off their ballots this morning. >> hopefully they do. hopefully people do turn out. >> if you don't vote, you can't complain. >> exactly. hopefully it will make a difference. 11 candidates will be vying to replace outgoing south bay and peninsula congresswoman anna eshoo, who is retiring. we recently looked at the campaign spending for that race, the 16th district congressional seat. more than $8 million have been spent so far. the top four spenders include

after days of closures traffic is slowly moving again. caltrans reopened the highway yesterday morning, but only one lane is open and chain controls are in effect. the chp the saying that drivers have to be patient. crews are still working to clear all of that snow from the weekend blizzard that left 11 feet of snow out there. >> hopefully this break will give them a chance to clear up. in the bay area, the weather is not as harsh. >> much better. with the low pressure system we're seeing, it still triggered a winter weather advisory for some spots in the sierra. we're not completely in the clear just yet. that's the reason you're still going to see that advisory. lake tahoe, this is a live look, and it is giving very much hallmark vibes. look at this. it's beautiful. we've got some pink in the sky. it's about 30 degrees right now. and your satellite radar is showcasing that low pressure system just to our north, primarily going to stay pretty far north. notice the blue and pink. that is sierra snow coming down, and this is one stretch, very far north, that is still under a

other states, as well as a territory, are heading to the polls today. >> scott mcgrew, we already assumed the incumbent, president joe biden, will do well today. the big question is, how will nikki haley fare? >> that's the biggest question. democrats today vote on who they want to nominate for president, as laura points out joe biden faces no serious competition. republicans will do the same. and of course the top two choices will be donald trump and nikki haley. trump so far has 273 delegates, after his past wins, haley 43. you need about 1,200. whoever wins faces, presumably, biden in the general election in november. and haley says if that's trump, he'll lose again to joe biden. she says pick her instead. >> don't take my word for it. look at the polls. in any one of the polls that are out there, he squeaks by. in all of those same polls, i defeat joe biden by up to 18

points. do you know what that means? that's bigger than the presidency. that's house, that's senate, that's governorships, that's school boards. that's really getting our country back on track. >> video coming into our newsroom from virginia. those polls are open ahead of ours. this is not the most glamorous thing you'll see today, but it's so valuable because it's democracy in action, each and every person's vote counts. donald trump's name will be on the ballot in colorado and maine today after the u.s. supreme court ruled in trump's favor and said those states do not have the power to remove his name under the 14th amendment, which bars insurrectionists from office. now, the high court had no opinion on whether trump incited an insurrection, it only said that congress can apply the rule. meantime, trump is looking ahead to the next case where he's going to ask the supreme court to rule that presidents are

bob redell right here on nbc bay area. laura? >> the team all here for you. thank you. new developments this morning, state attorney general rob bonta now looking into governor newsom's ties to a wealthy panera franchise owner. the controversy started with a report panera somehow skirted a new state law raising minimum wage to $20 an hour. chains that bake their own bread are exempt, but the newsom camp later pointed out that panera will not qualify for the exemption. despite that, bonta announced yesterday he is reviewing a letter from republican state lawmakers asking him to review his relations with the billionaire, greg flynn. bonta says he receives numerous letters which his office takes seriously. happening tomorrow, silicon valley's prestigious cinequest film festival is returning, and rather than shying away from questions about artificial

spotty and it really isn't until overnight tomorrow, so wednesday at around 9:00 a.m., the south bay will get more rain pushing through. and then with enough instability, we could see some isolated downpours at times through tomorrow evening. so that's going to remain in the forecast. heading into thursday and friday, the models show clear conditions and rain totals right now looking not very impressive. this is good, we definitely need to catch a break in between systems. a tenth of an inch for most, that's all of the blue you see. some areas, a little over a quarter, depending on the stretch through fremont. this is heading towards the 10:00 hour on wednesday. it's kind of an overall view. i want to give you a look at the water update, because we're doing fantastic. santa rosa in the lead right now, at a surplus of over 5 inches, nearly 6 inches. we're even at a surplus in a typically rain-shadowed san jose. things are looking great.

almost 3 inches and percentage-wise we are well above average of normal rain to date. look at that, san jose, 126%, oakland, 183%. we are no longer in a drought right now. things are still looking good for the seven-day forecast. things dry out and warm up heading into friday. mike, how are the roads? >> dryer, obviously, better conditions. we do have a slower drive expected toward treasure island. chp says the crash is involving a motorcycle. no major injuries reported, but it is blocking two lanes. you see the slow drive off the berkeley curve. that will impact pretty much everyone heading into the city. the rest of the bay is fine. >> thank you, mike. happening now, new reports of hundreds of tech layoffs across the bay area. according to "the mercury news," kaiser, sony, marbel semiconductor and a manufacturing company all announcing cuts since the start of the year. the paper reports the pace of

is left in the race to fill a very important u.s. senate seat. among the front-runners, republican steve garvey gaining late traction, despite having little political experience. for democrats, house lawmaker adam schiff leading voter support over fellow house members katie porter and barbara lee. the two top vote-getters face off this november. ahead of today's election, governor gavin newsom joined mayor london breed, the lieutenant governor and district attorney in advocating for a yes on prop 1. if approved, proposition 1 would authorize the use of a billion in bonds to build mental health treatment facilities. opponents say california doesn't have the money, especially with the looming multibillion dollar deficit. we're going to get a mix of sun and clouds, but if you live in the north bay or around san francisco, the peninsula, a spotty chance will continue throughout the afternoon. daytime highs will be in the 60s to get out and vote.
