clouds starting to fill the sky. we have seen those winds pick up 15 to 30 miles per hour. now the rain arriving in the north bank here. northwestern sonoma county up through mendocino county. probably within the next hour or two, will begin to see the showers approaching the coast. a system that is going to move through pretty quickly, so rain totals at least between now my 9:00 mostly north of san francisco. in overnight, dropping down for the santa cruz mountains and south bay, but the color coding showing you most of the bay area picking up about a 10th of an inch of rain to a third of an inch of rain. we will have one more similar weather system to deal with on tuesday, then a very interesting change in the weather as high pressure builds in. we are going to see much warmer temperatures, and low pressure to the south. that pressure gradient developing between the two could lead to around of gusty wind as we head toward the mid part of the week but midweek could have gusts of up to 50 miles per hour.

we will talk more about that and just how warm those temperatures could get ahead by next weekend, mid-to-upper 70s in that seven-day forecast. a closer look at coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. you can track the latest weather conditions anytime, download the free nbc bay area app, just use your phone's camera to scan the qr code on the left side of the screen, will take you to our radar on our weather page. another shooting on a bay area freeway leaves a woman hurt, the shooting happened last night just before 830 and snarled traffic for hours. a woman was driving on the eastern span of the bridge just past the island, that is when another car pulls up and someone in that car started shooting at her. the woman was hit by a bullet, pulled over, then called 911. she was eventually taken to the hospital. the chp closed four of the eastbound lands for about two hours to investigate. they're looking for a motive, anyone with information is urged to call them. monopolies also investigating a deadly head on crash in oakland hills. you are looking at the

aftermath on san joaquin miller road point that crash happened early this morning just before 5:00. police say the driver of the red cart struck the suv, which was going the opposite direction. a passenger in the suv died at the scene. five other people, including the drivers of both cars, or injured. right now, it's not clear what led up to the crash. protests before hollywood's big night, demonstrators hit the streets as afternoon, accusing the entertainment industry of actively supporting genocide in gaza. organizers say they want retaliation. just before 3:00, los angeles police told the crowd to leave, but not everyone went home. protesters at another march nearby demanded an immediate and permanent cease-fire and for leaders in hollywood to take action. forces are taking action in the middle east, they joined with the jordanian air force to drop more food over gaza today. here is a look at the latest

drop in northern gaza. u.s. sent, says nearly 12,000 meals were dropped, as well as rice, flour, pasta, canned food. back here in the u.s., president biden expressed both support and criticism of israel this weekend. >> he has a right to defend israel, a right to continue to pursue hamas, but you must, he must, he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence to the actions taken. he has written, in my view, he is hurting his more than helping israel by making the rest of the world -- it's contrary to what israel stands for and i think it is a big mistake so i want to see a cease-fire. >> in the same interview, president biden said the defense of israel is still critical and he will not cut off weapons. let's downtown san francisco has been faced with a number of challenges recently, but a new initiative to revitalize the midmarket area kicked off today. nbc bay area's christie smith tells us how organizers help breathe new life into the neighborhood.

think it is amazing to have any kind of art on the streets in the city, we should just have more of it. >> reporter: skaters were out enjoying themselves in an area that is trying new ideas. >> we have the creative community raising their hand to say i want to be part of the revitalization of downtown and i want to be part of what the new downtown is. >> reporter: in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. tomorrow marks one year since one of the worst floods to hit northern california in recent memory. shortly after midnight, march 11th 2023, the river levee broke. that set the water rushing into the small town from the majority of the homes there flooded, displacing about 3500 people. it later came to light that federal officials knew for decades the levee was at risk of failing. shortly after the flooding, emergency repairs were made on the levee, but a more permanent solution still hasn't started. work on that project is expected to start later this year. congressman adam schefter is pushing back against the claim of wealthy donors rigged california's senate race.

katie porter, one of the three top democrats in the race to take over the late senator dianne feinstein's made the assertion big donors spend millions of dollars for mr. adam schefter rigged the race. this morning on nbc's meet the press, adam schiff said democrats were quick to denounce the language and the claim. >> of that term, rage, is a very loaded term in the era of trump. it connotes false claims like those of donald trump and i think what is remarkable is democrats very quickly rallied to say no, we don't use that language, the election was legitimate. >> and adam schiff also added porter was actually very gracious when she called to congratulate him on election night. adam schiff will face off against republican steve garvey for the senate seat in november, both won about 32% of the vote. when we come back, lake tahoe resorts forced to make a change ahead of the upcoming storm. how much the area is expected to get more snow noted to the

stop surrendering dogs to animal control, that is the plea from san francisco animal care and control today after reaching capacity yet again. the agents he says the majority of dogs in it shelter are there because of legal issues, things like cruelty investigations, hoarding, and maybe something happening to dogs owner, reasons the dogs end up in the shelter, leaving very little room for other animals. and right now, shelter space is very tight. joining us now, virginia donahoo, executive director at san francisco animal care and control, thank you very much for joining us on the sunday. what is going on, why are so many dogs being surrendered at this particular time? >> i don't think there is an increase in surrenders necessarily, but the whole pipeline is full, as a result of the pandemic, so, we had a lot of adoptions, but there is a lot of breeding, unplanned breeding going on.

so, we have a lot of those dogs. we also have seen a big increase in the number of pets that we are holding in custody because their owners are sick or incarcerated. victims of fire, domestic violence, all sorts of reasons, so those cases, we usually got about 500 a year, and last year we got over 800 point and we are again on pace to be close to the 800-number than the 500 number. >> what does that mean, 500, 800 dogs coming in, how full are you right now, have you ever seen it like this? >> we have been full on and off for the past year and a half. you know, and it's super unusual. pre-pandemic, we usually had a little space. but right now, we have no room. we are completely packed. so, we are asking people who need to surrender their animal

to hold on for a few days, let's see if we can clear up some space, see if we can get some animals to our adoption partners. we have also started programs to help people who have financial concerns about keeping their pet. so, we now have a low-cost veterinary clinic that is in our parking lot every tuesday, we have a food bank, we did a vaccine clinic yesterday, we are trying to keep dogs in particular with their families. so, if we can give families a little bit of help and get them to hold onto their dog, i think that is best for everybody, especially the dog. >> so, tell me about people who are looking to adopt it right now, the shelter is full, but many of these dogs are spoken for. what is it like for those who want to adopt dogs right now? that's it for those who want to adopt right now, we have four copies, we have a bunch of adults. most of our dogs are on the larger side, so if you're thinking of a dog rather than

later tomorrow into tuesday. let's show you the conditions at lake tahoe right now, 39 degrees. the wind not so good up there in the higher elevations today. we will see less wind over the next few days, more snow. winter weather advisory through 5:00 tuesday. as you see, more snow heading to the sierra, this time around at mainly elevations above 5000 feet. back to the bay area now, cloudy skies, wind picking up a little bit, 64 in san jose, 59 degrees in walnut creek. you can see the trees blowing around a little bit better. similar conditions around sfo, 58 degrees, winds up to 13 miles per hour. san francisco, clouds and some light rain there. you can see on our store manger mobile doppler radar, the more significant rain is still up along the coast here, that will move south as we move forward for the evening into the overnight hours, pretty limited western with this particular weather system, and it should move through pretty quickly.

as you see here, starting up this evening, most of the action in the north bay. by 11:00, san francisco, central bay area. by after midnight, mostly around the south bay. right now, things look pretty good for the morning commute as most of the rain should be moving out by 7 a.m. tomorrow. top rain totals likely to be sonoma county, the area they are in green. a third of an inch to maybe half an inch on some of the hilltops in sonoma county and the santa cruz mountains picking up about a third of an inch of rain. hour by hour on your monday forecast, numbers in upper 40s for monday morning, a few isolated showers near the hills. partly cloudy skies, and monday it may end up looking a lot like today. increase in clouds late date. upper 60s from san francisco to oakland. like we are seeing now, another chance of evening rain pushing back through the bay area 24 hours from now. monday night into tuesday morning rain. that second weather system tuesday morning might try to linger for the start of the tuesday morning commute, then after that, skies clear out at rain chances will be going away

for a while as high pressure builds in, and this could be a pretty strong ridge of high pressure. the warm temperatures are going to stick around for a while. top concern, though, as the high builds in, is a potential of gusty winds late wednesday into thursday. over the mountain tops early thursday morning, could see gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour, so stay tuned for wind advisories and the north bay and east bay hilltops. look at these temperatures. thursday, starting to see 70s as the wind backs off, temperatures are going to be climbing up. mid-70s by next friday, and weekend temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, which takes us towards st. patrick's day there on sunday. even san francisco for a couple of days could see 70s. looks like right now, friday and saturday. inland valleys, once we hit the 70's and the winds back off on thursday, right now, that 10- day forecast taking us all the way into monday and tuesday the following week keeps those 70s

we will have similar timing to the neck system coming monday evening into tuesday. as terry was talking about, as high pressure builds in, mid-to- upper 70s and reach. once they get here thursday and friday, we will likely stay with those warm temperatures all the way through next weekend, so outdoor plans next weekend look great and it looks like that high is going to stick around for a while, so if you like those 70s, once we get there, the wind backs off, it is going to stick around for a while, beyond even next weekend. let's did i see some red in tonight's rain? >> as a frontal boundary passes, there will be some brief downpours between 5:00 and 9:00 tonight. thanks a lot.
