[ laughter ] huh. [ light laughter ] so i guess an ice cream date just means nothing to you? [ laughter ] i guess you know which one of us you should call when you need a ride to the airport. [ laughter ] according to new analysis president biden has drastically reduced his usage of the term "bidenomics" since last november. probably a good idea because nothing else has been drastically reduced. [ light laughter ] the biden administration has adopted new race and ethnicity standards for census forms and will add middle eastern and north african as a category, while trump's proposal is a bit different. [ laughter ]

former trump campaign manager kellyanne conway is reportedly considering an offer to join the 2024 team, though that could be a lie because it was reported by kellyanne conway. [ laughter ] according to a new survey, 35% of men said that it is important for them to smell good during their first sexual experience with a new partner, while the other 65% were given a fake phone number. [ laughter ] the massachusetts state police have announced that their robot dog was shot last month during a standoff on cape cod. which is also the sentence massachusetts parents use to teach their children the accent. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> seth: i don't need to tell you, donald trump needs cash and he needs it asap. the guy's been hawking bibles on tv like he's trying to raise

money to go to jesus camp. [ light laughter ] the "new york times" reported this week that he spent more than $100 million on legal fees. now, i don't know what trump's current lawyers are doing with all that money, but i can guess what his former lawyers would do with it based on what they're doing without it. rudy giuliani, who recently declared bankruptcy and declared debts totaling $500 million, posted a video of himself this week behind the wheel of what i can only assume is either a convertible or a car missing its roof. [ laughter ] under the caption, "driving with the top down." [ laughter ] all right. i think i'm out on this "thelma and louise" reboot. knowing rudy, he would probably miss the cliff. by the way, "driving with the top down" sounds like a euphemism you'd use about rudy giuliani. [ light laughter ] i don't know if you should hire that guy. let's just say he's driving with the top down. [ laughter ] also, who's holding the camera in this video? who in their right mind would

get in a car with the guy who mistook the four seasons landscaping company for a luxury hotel? he probably thinks threes road signs are suggestions. [ laughter ] "uh-oh. you know what that means. we've got to drive crazy now! don't worry, the next sign says 'only rudy's allowed.'" [ laughter ] so trump desperately needs money. now, trump has spent his entire life wriggling his way out of seemingly impossible jams. but surely, surely there's no escape hatch for him this time, right? >> more breaking news tonight involving donald trump. his media company, which of course includes truth social, soaring in its first day of trading on nasdaq. surging 56% at one point during trading to $78 a share before closing at 58. >> trump now owns 60% of the new trump media company, or roughly $78 million a share. a stake that is on paper at this hour worth $4.6 billion. >> the higher the stock goes, the higher that donald trump's net worth is.

at yesterday's close trump's net worth according to bloomberg a little over $7 billion. it went up by $4 billion on monday alone. >> seth: that's right. trump doubled his net worth in one day after his otherwise worthless social media company went public. this brings us to a segment called "seth tries to laugh about a thing that is clearly making him crazy." ♪ [ laughter ] i mean, i don't -- [ laughter ] i don't underst -- so he doubles his net worth out of nowhere -- ha! [ laughter ] based on a worthless business just in time to -- ha ha ha! [ laughter ] pay off the hundreds of millions he owes in fines. from lying about the value of his -- i just don't -- i don't get it. [ laughter ] [ seth laughing ] [ laughter ]

this has been "seth tries to laugh about a thing that is clearly making him crazy." ♪ [ applause ] now, you might be asking yourself, donald trump has a media and technology company? and the answer is no, he doesn't. what he has is a dumb twitter ripoff for maga trolls called truth social where he posts insane typo-riddled, all-caps screeds. you may have seen one of his posts when someone else screen grabs it and then puts it on twitter. truth social has been an abject failure, has lost millions of dollars, and is hemorrhaging users. >> experts warn the stock is extremely overvalued, saying its staggering multibillion-dollar valuation is likely a flash in the pan. truth social has been racking up huge losses and as of last month only had some 494,000 active monthly mobile users. >> truth social is tiny. we're talking about less than half a million monthly active users on ios and android in the united states. for comparison, x, the company formerly known as twitter, it

has 75 million users. even instagram's threads is ten times bigger than truth social. not only that, but truth social is shrinking. monthly active users are down by 51% year over year in february. >> trump media generated just $3.4 million of revenue through the first nine months of last year, according to filings. the company lost $49 million over that time period. >> seth: the only way this business could be any more of a failure is if every time you open an account you got a free zune, a bottle of crystal pepsi, a blockbuster card, a motorola flip phone that came preloaded with a myspace account, and a round trip next to the door on alaska airlines. [ laughter ] so just to recap, not only is truth social a tiny business that generated only $3 million in revenue while losing $49 million, it's also shrinking, with unique visitors down 20% and active users down 51%. its revenues are so small, and this is true, it actually qualifies for the federal government's definition of a small business, which has

revenue ranging from 1 million to over 40 million. by comparison here's how much money squatty potty, the plastic step stool you put your feet on while you go to the bathroom, made after it went on "shark tank." >> squatty potty's partnered with more than 20 major retailers. we're also in 20 countries all over the world. we've now done $175 million in sales since "shark tank." >> seth: 175 million! for something that helps you [ bleep ], compared to truth social, which i guarantee is something trump does while he [ bleep ]. [ laughter ] trump's stock market windfall has nothing to do with the reality of his business, and that's obvious to everyone. it's just a buying spree fueled by trump supporters and traders capitalizing on the enthusiasm of trump supporters. i'm willing to bet most of the people investing in this company have never even used truth social. here's an exchange from fox news in which host jesse watters claimed he used the site but wouldn't prove it. >> in the last nine months of 2023, truth social generated $3.4 million, and it lost $49 million in that span. the valuation, which is $11 billion, compared to reddit,

right? something we've all been on, right? their valuation was $6.4 billion. so you think that a site that has less than half a million users -- i mean, this is -- these are facts. >> all these valuations are ridiculous, jessica. >> okay, then he's the game -- it's like gamestop. right? >> you know what? >> no? >> you know how you look at this? you look at this -- >> oh, you're on truth social? >> i'm on truth social. >> show it to me. >> i'm not having you look at my phone. >> show me your phone. >> how dare you? >> seth: why won't you show her your phone? [ laughter ] oh, is the only app candy crush and do you have it downloaded twice? [ laughter ] seriously, jesse, why won't you show us your phone? is it because you're afraid we'll see the video you took of rudy driving his car? [ laughter ] trump himself seems to have no idea how the business works. for example, the special acquisition company trump media merged with is listed on the nasdaq rather than the larger new york stock exchange but when he tried to explain why trump offered a mind-boggling and nonsensical answer.

>> truth social is doing very well. it's hot as a pistol and doing great. and it's going public. and the new york stock exchange wants to have us badly. and i told them we can't do the new york stock exchange. you're treated too badly in new york. we don't want to do the new york stock exchange. and the people at the stock exchange are very, very upset about it. the top person is -- is mortified. can't believe it. he said, "i'm losing business because of new york, because people don't want to be in new york and they don't want to go on the new york stock exchange." >> seth: all right. a couple things. first of all, the top person at the new york stock exchange is a woman. so that story's obviously made up. [ light laughter ] unless trump is claiming he had a conversation with the bull. "the top person at the stock exchange came up to me, big bull, strong bull, huge nuts. [ laughter ] tears in his eyes pouring down to his solid brown snout. and he said to me, 'mr. trump, sir, the reason i'm froze nen place is because i'm so scared to be in new york.'" [ laughter ] second, the nasdaq is also based in new york. third, you don't need to literally live in new york to

list a company on either the nasdaq or the new york stock exchange. if swiss company nestle wanted to trade on the nasdaq the ceo wouldn't have to move from zurich to a studio apartment in bushwick. "but i don't have room for all my delicious chocolate!" [ laughter ] i'm going to assume the ceo of nestle is a gnome, and if it's not don't ruin it! for me. [ laughter ] and yet despite the reality of the underlying business the stock debuted at nearly 7 billion in value thanks to a buying spree from trump supporters. which does not mean it will stay there. the stock's value is based entirely on one thing, which is trump's brand. and in its own s.e.c. filings, the company admitted trump could tank the value. they wrote that an adverse outcome in one or more of the ongoing legal proceedings in which president trump is involved could negatively impact the company, and that a number of companies that were associated with president trump have filed for bankruptcy. there can be no assurances that this will not also become bankrupt. "uh, sell, sell. sell, sell, sell, sell. [ laughter ] sell, sell, sell, sell, sell!

now, that was for a different thing. i thought this was foolproof! jesse watters uses it." [ laughter ] one expert told cnn the stock price is clearly a bubble. i'm reasonably confident the stock price will eventually drop to $2 a share and could go even below that if the company blows through the money it got from the merger. oh, man, $2. if that happens trump's going to be -- >> hot as a pistol. [ laughter ] >> seth: in fact, that's basically already happened to trump. trump once had a publicly traded company with the exact same ticker symbol, djt. the company went public in 1995. and then this happened in 2004. >> trump hotels and casino files for bankruptcy. >> his trump hotels and casino empire have filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. the filings list $1.3 billion in debt. >> seth: and that was when he had actual stuff, like real buildings. now all he has is a website where he misspells words like buden and grest, a real thing he did this week on truth social. no other successful company does

that. i've never logged on to amazon and noticed they accidentally spelled their name with an extra o. [ laughter ] the paper value of trump's stock is wildly divorced from the reality of the underlying business, which is an abject failure. there's a good chance that eventually the bubble will burst. it all hinges on trump, a guy whose businesses have filed for bankruptcy four times and who's in so much legal trouble his house was raided by feds looking for classified documents and yelling -- >> show me your phone. >> seth: this has been "a closer look." [ laughter ] hey, you do -- one of my favorite actors who i've never had the pleasure of meeting, you've known ciaran hinds, great actor. i think everybody's seen something he's been in over the course of the last 30 years. >> it's funny, i just texted him earlier. ciaran hinds is the brother i never had. i met him when i was 19. so it's 52 years ago. >> seth: that's unbelievable. >> i just texted him earlier because i was going through the production notes for the show tonight. like the name of the movie, who's in it. 40 years, wee blurb. kerry condon, a wee blurb. ciaran's, four pages. >> seth: oh, really? big blurb. this is a movie i remember watching because you wouldn't -- i don't know if you were here. but hbo in the early days, when hbo was the only way to see movies, i remember "excalibur" was a movie that i would be very excited to watch. because there was a little bit -- i'll be honest. it was a lot of knights and a little bit of nudity and i was into both of them. [ light laughter ] but this is where you met on this film -- >> no, we didn't meet. we're actually sharing a house now. but this was our first film. that's ciaran. >> seth: yeah. >> that's me at the back. and you notice something not seen, king arthur's sitting here in these -- he's lost the grail. >> seth: oh, that's the worst thing that could happen. >> and i say -- i say in this scene, when king arthur says "i need my knights to ride. find the grail." and i actually say, "i will ride forth in the name of thy quest." and then ciaran just mumbles "i'll ride fifth then i guess." [ laughter ]

and we just cracked up. >> seth: that's why you don't have irish knights. [ laughter ] they're always doing their wordplay and you're like "this is why it's not worth it." >> you're right, seth. >> seth: you've talked about -- i've heard about you talking boxing. you did a lot of boxing growing up. this is a very -- this is a photo we found of a young liam. and i will say i would not want to run into this kid even now. [ laughter ] even now. >> no, but i'm acting there because i'm pushing my muscles -- >> seth: i was -- >> and i'm holding my nose so i look a bit more dented. you know? i remember that very well. >> seth: you also had a brief -- a brief effort at being a schoolteacher. >> yes. i trained for two years at a teacher training college in newcastle-upon-tyne, north of england. failed abysmally. trying to teach 11, 12-year-old kids. who see you walking into the classroom and they're like -- "oh, yeah, we've got your number."

and two of my sisters, retired teachers. 34 years. >> seth: oh, wow, they managed it. they were tougher than you. [ laughter ] >> i'm very good. they were very, very good teachers. i could not do it. >> seth: i'm very happy you ended up where you are and i'm very excited about this. you have an upcoming project with a dear friend of mine, akiva. he's one of the lonely island fellas. and he's directing a new "naked gun" film you're going to star in. you can hear, they're excited. [ laughter ] you did that rock'n roll thing where you're like i'm all out of songs. >> i know. and then -- now it's the comeback. >> seth: oh, that's very exciting. >> and then it's the best of the comeback. >> seth: oh, good. we look forward to that too. but when you started writing songs, you really didn't have the intention -- >> i was not thinking -- i wasn't thinking record. i wasn't thinking album. because you know, people don't really listen to albums anymore top to bottom. so i thought, well, i'll just put songs out. and then i wound up, after my kids started going to school in the fall and all the conversations about artificial intelligence, i just started writing. so i feel like i made a playlist of new sheryl crow songs.

[ light laughter ] >> seth: oh, interesting. interesting. and since we don't want to just hold up art of a playlist, you're like i'll put it -- no, is it a thing where when your kids start going to school, you just have so much more creative time to think? >> yeah, i'm like this. out. no, i'm kidding. [ laughter ] no, i have an odd sense of accomplishment when my kids drive down the driveway. it's like, okay, i made the lunches, they were happy, i got them fed, the homework is done, they're on their way to school, and then it's like -- ♪ coffee putting my feet up on ♪ >> seth: you deserve it. i know they're teenagers. can one of them actually drive the others to school? are they there? >> yes. and i do hate that. i mean, the first couple of days when they drove off, i was just like -- >> seth: of course. >> what are they talking about? you know. [ laughter ] >> seth: now, are you crying because you're worried they're talking about you? >> well, no. no.

they would not be talking about me. unless it was something stupid that i had done. >> seth: okay. >> my -- literally they should have subtitles under them that are like whenever they talk, you see, "mom, you are an idiot." [ laughter ] >> or just not come home. just slept out in the car. >> seth: this -- i know, look, i know this is new york city, we live in a big bubble here. but you live in nashville. and you recorded this album, this is like the stereotype for me, over a stable of horses. >> i did, yes. >> seth: so do you have -- >> i chewed on hay while i was -- you know. i drank whiskey. no. i actually, believe it or not, wrote the songs mostly in the morning, like on the back porch or in the piano room. and then i didn't produce it. and i usually produce myself. but i had these songs and i was like i don't want to hear what i already know i'll do. and so i called this friend of mine, this amazing producer mike elizondo. and i started feeding him songs.

i was like do you like this one? and i said will you just like martin scorsese it, you know, just like put a crazy amazing movie around it. and that's what he did. he took like demos of mine and just -- >> seth: and did you feel like you were capable of letting go like that? >> the first thing he played me was "evolution." and at first -- well, first i cried. i just could not believe what i was hearing. it was so -- so cinematic. and then i won't through the old but you're not playing bass on it. but you're not playing keyboards on it. but your name's not going to say produced by. and it's like oh please. bitch please. [ laughter ] >> seth: that's nice. when you're established enough to "bitch please" yourself. >> i did, i did. >> seth: shame on -- you call it tic tac and we will never forget that. but you also do duets with olivia rodrigo. you recently did that. >> i did. >> seth: the two of you got up on stage together at one of her shows. >> yes, i did. >> seth: she was also there, and

congratulations, belated congratulations on your hall of fame induction. >> thank you. [ cheers and applause ] >> seth: that's a big deal. and surely, surely, your kids could appreciate that their mom is a hall of famer. >> they were actually -- first of all, they had to wear suits. so that was like -- but they were in the room. and they haven't seen the documentary or anything like that. and i'm like "hey, y'all watch it when you want to, when you feel like you're ready to know who your mom was before y'all came and changed my life. for the better." [ laughter ] >> seth: the way you said that wasn't the most convincing. >> no. definitely. but they -- you know, i felt how proud they were. in fact, my 16-year-old was like -- on tv. on tv, he was like -- i know. >> seth: have you known olivia for a while? >> i met her -- gosh. let me think about this. how long have i known her?

i met her at a billboard women in music. and i just really liked her. i already had a record and i loved the way she wrote. it's very punk. it's like the breeders meets deborah harry. and i'm like who is this little -- i mean, she's a child -- like she was a child when that came out. you know what i mean? she's like a young woman now. and then i met her and i was like i'm so impressed with just how sort of down to earth and together she is. like kind of unfazed by it. and i've gotten to know her, you know, since then, and i really -- i adore her. >> seth: you had another cool thing happen at your hall of fame induction. you got to perform with stevie nicks. i imagine that it's both an incredible -- right? i mean, right? [ applause ] how do you -- but i was wondering. look, there are a few times where i've been in a situation where i'm talking to one of my heroes, that's where it's the hardest. to have a conversation.

what's it like to sing with one of them? >> she's -- i mean, i can't even explain it. i grew up like as a kid wanting to be her. you know, got my hair cut in the shag and had the -- and the shawls. [ laughter ] you know. i really wanted to be her and i wanted to be as good as her. and then i met her at a grammys many years later and she asked me if i'd produce some stuff on her, which was unbelievable. and then she took me on the road. and we were like sisters. you know? it was -- i mean, it was so fantastic. but more than that, she's just been an unbelievable like -- not only an advocate but like -- i mean, she's just like the best friend you can have. you know how some people are just -- they're just the greatest friend. you know, they're open. they are there with you when you're down but they're there when you're up too. which says a lot about a person. and she's just -- man, she's the goods. >> seth: and also, i imagine there are so few people that know as much about the music industry both the good and the bad as somebody like her. >> yes. >> seth: and so few people that

can understand what you go through at any given point. >> yeah. i would say she's unique, though because she remembers everything. like i can't remember yesterday. but she remembers everything. and she's like -- she shares everything. it's just -- she's wicked awesome. >> seth: that's really great. and then, last but not least, laura dern read your induction. and you have known -- you were roommates with laura dern. >> yes. she lived with me in los angeles. i mean, it's been like 20-something years ago. we've been great friends since. >> seth: how was she as a roommate? >> she's very sloppy.
