12:00 pm
hi, everyone. i'm zm zblm and i'm kate snow. "nbc news daily" starts right now. today, thursday, april 4th,
12:01 pm
2024. breaking news, allies at odds, a tense conversation between president biden and israel's prime minister ends with an ultimatum. race against time, rescue crews sift through the rubble in taiwan as the death toll rises, hundreds of people are still trapped, some deep inside mines. complicating efforts on the ground. turbulence ahead, the busiest of the spring break travel season, but travelers nationwide are facing thousands of flight delays and cancellations, with you need to know before taking off. and ring of fire, the countdown is on for the total solar eclipse, what the heck is that and why are people so over the moon about it anyways? zinhle will help us understand. we do begin this hour though with that breaking news and a
12:02 pm
new warning from the united states to israel. >> today, president biden spoke with israeli prime minister netanyahu for the first time since the israeli air strikes that killed seven aid workers in gaza. the president told the prime minister that if he does not agree to cease-fire u.s. relations with israel will change significantly, those officials confirming that could include military aid. and also learned first lady jill biden has privately urged president biden to end the conflict in gaza. >> jacob flickinger killed in that strike on aid workers his family told raf sanchez that he always wanted to serve others. >> jacob had your back. he was always there for you. >> yeah. >> so, he was a special, special young man. >> joining us now is chief white
12:03 pm
house correspondent peter alexander and nbc pentagon correspondent courtney kube. >> this is breaking news right now, what else do we know about president biden said to benjamin netanyahu in that call. >> clearly a tense call lasting roughly 30 minutes we're told by a white house official here, the president for the first time did something a condition future support for israel. the president according to a readout, in this conversation with netanyahu today, describe it as unacceptable regarding the situation with those seven world central kitchen aid workers who were killed by the strike. it says, that he made clear the need for israel to announce an
12:04 pm
implement a series of specific, concrete and measurable steps. he made clear that u.s. policy with respect to gaza will be determined by our assessment, the u.s.'s assessment of israel's immediate action on these steps. for the first time he's trying leverage american aid to influence the way that israel is carrying out this war right now against hamas in gaza, one of the biggest concerns has been the 1.4, perhaps 1.5 million palestinians who are now crammed into the southern city of rafah near the egyptian border. the president would say among other things to netanyahu, he wanted to make sure that more humanitarian aid was allowed in and less stringent steps to be taken on what was on those trucks. so much the biggest details we're learning right now.
12:05 pm
i should note the cia director bill burns is expected to try to push for a cease-fire in the near future, the president making very clear now for the first time that there must be a cease-fire, an immediate cease-fire as he said in this conflict. >> courtney, talk about that so-called ultimatum we referenced at the top. you talked with u.s. officials after that call wrapped, how would that relationship change if there's not an immediate cease-fire? >> reporter: one of the policies that could change, if there's not an immediate cease-fire the president we're told was strongly referencing would be aid, so the u.s. sends billions of dollars of aid to israel every single year, much of that comes in the form of foreign sales. equipment, weapons, even aircraft, and that's what could have conditions placed on it in
12:06 pm
the future if the u.s. doesn't find that israel is fulfilling some of their concerns about the humanitarian situation, not just about the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded in rafah, secretary of state blinken saying 100% of the population is facing food insecurity and many facing famine. but not just that, but also referencing back to the strike on the world central kitchen workers earlier this week that killed seven humanitarian workers, all of that if and the u.s. doesn't feel that's addressed right now they could condition some of that military aid. >> thank you both so much. now turning to dangerous an challenging rescue effort under way in taiwan following that massive earthquake there, this is what search teams are dealing with cities near the epicenter, huge buildings partially collapsed, those scenes are complicating the urgent scramble
12:07 pm
to save more than 700 people they think are trapped because of the rubble. overnight the death toll rose to at least ten people, more than 1,000 have been injured and today, we're getting new looks at some of the heroism and quick thinking, nurses scrambling to protect newborn babies as the hospital building shook all around them during the wake. let's bring in meagan fitzgerald, talk to us about the search efforts, at least 15 people are unaccounted for and more seem to be trapped in the aftershocks. >> reporter: absolutely, more than 300 aftershocks since yesterday, making things all the more dangerous for search and rescue crews who are working to save people trapped beneath the rubble. for instance, we saw crews carefully evacuating people from the windows of those buildings. we know that rescue efforts are being focused around that
12:08 pm
damaged highway that leads into the city of hualien, the hardest hit region. but officials are on the ground telling us that those who are trapped are at hotels and activity centers in national park after roads were cut off by landslides. the good news is, those folks are said to be okay. >> they're not necessarily physically trapped but stuck in one place. taiwan's used to earthquakes, one that reaches 7.4 magnitude is pretty massive, can you talk about how taiwan was prepared for this? >> reporter: absolutely, so taiwan has most certainly learned from lessons of the past, taken significant measures to improve their earthquake preparedness. they spent a lot of time over the years making sure that residents know exactly what to do when earthquakes hit, messages are sent out. when you look at 7.4 magnitude
12:09 pm
quake, but then you're talking about only ten deaths and 15 people unaccounted a testament to just how well prepared this country was. kate. >> meagan fitzgerald, thank you so much. now to a triple threat of severe weather, soaring spring break and people wanting to the total solar eclipse creating trouble at the nation's airports. more than 3,000 flights have been delayed as of this hour and to make matters more complicated the faa expects spring break flights to peak today topping 15,000. how are things looking at laguardia and what are you hearing from travelers? >> reporter: so, you said it, zinhle. what i'm seeing on the ground here at laguardia airport. you talked about 15,000, 5,000 from what we see normally, lots of folks checking into their airlines.
12:10 pm
getting here fairly early to make sure they're ahead of the rush, a real moment, it's a confluence between spring break travelers and folks who are traveling for that eclipse, right, we're at the end of the tail end of spring break right now, and folks getting ready wanting to go in the direction of where they want to be in the pathway for that eclipse come monday. one woman traveled today because she felt like she wanted to get ahead of the game, right, prices are going up, she wanted to travel on a thursday because it was less expensive today than traveling at the end of the spring break on saturday or sunday and before that eclipse on monday. take a listen. >> the closer we got to this coming weekend the more expensive it got. one of the reasons we decided to travel on easter and then kind of do our days in new york city during the week.
12:11 pm
>> reporter: so, look behind me, right, security is not that bad. delays so far across the country we're looking about 3,000 delays so far, about 400 cancellations domestically across the country, when you're looking ahead to monday traffic jams, lack of parking at airports and if you're going to a small airport, pack your patience, a lot less ways to get in and out. >> thank you so much. time now for today's money minute. alaska airlines gets billions from boeing. >> apple looks to be getting into a new industry. pippa joins us now. alaska air announced it received $160 million from boeing in compensation for profit loss after a door panel blew out mid-flight in january on 737 max 9 plane. the filing is an early look at what boeing might provide its major customers while alaska
