oakland coliseum soon to be the former home of the as . they announced they are moving to sacramento next season and will play at a minor league stadium for three to four years until their las vegas ballpark is built. and just like that, more than five decades of magical memories an colorful personalities, a's baseball is coming to an end. at least it is coming to an end here. it is painful to the fans. >> reporter: at sports bars like ricky's in san leandro where fans have spent decades rooting for the as , news is spreading they will be leaving. they struck a deal to play at sutter park in west sacramento for the next three seasons with the option for a fourth while their stadium in las vegas is built. >> we thought this was a great interim home for the as.

>> reporter: sutter health park is home to the sacramento river cats, a minor league team. oakland mayor sheng thao said negotiations continued up until the announcement. the as wanted 97 million to extend. city and county negotiators offered $60 million for three years. >> just say good-bye, let's kiss and say good-bye. >> reporter: councilmember noel gallo noted city and county taxpayers are still paying off millions of dollars in bonds from prior efforts to renovate and expand the coliseum. >> i'm glad they are leaving. it sucks that they are taking taxpayer money and holing the city hostage. >> reporter: it is not clear what the as plan to do with the team's 50% ownership stake in the coliseum.

but competition will continue there as the oakland roots and soul soccer teams have been approved to play home games there in 2025. the oakland baller's professional baseball team starting up games this year wants to see sports continue at the coliseum. >> we love the coliseum. we want to play there. we think it is one of the most wonderful and beautiful places to participate in any kind of sport. >> reporter: this latest news leaves a bitter taste for fans who had to say good-bye to the raiders, the warriors, an soon the as. >> when you start losing those teams that used to be a part of the culture, a part of the fabric, and to see them disappear and the way they disappeared, it hurts. >> reporter: alyssa gourd, nbc bay area news. >> so what's next for the coliseum? mayor sheng thao issuing a statement. in it she said the final proposal was quote fair to the as and fiscally responsible for the city. she adds we wish the as the

best and the city of oakland will now focus on redevelopment efforts at the coliseum. new at 11:00, a layoff coming next month to hundreds of apple employees in the south bay. the tech giant will hand pink slips to worker ins santa clara including machine shop managers, hardware, project design engineers. apple has canceled a ten yearlong electric car project. we did reach out to the company to find out if this is related to the project but we have yet to hear back. 99 cents no more. 99 cents only is closing all of its 371 stores including this one in fremont. after more than four decades. the southern california based company said it made that decision after several challenging years citing the pandemic inflation pressures and the rising level of theft and shoplifting. 99 cents only had stores all

across california plus arizona, nevada, and texas. it employs 14,000 people. sales to liquidate merchandise and store furnishings begin tomorrow. it is official. an extraordinary tie for second place. this is in the race for a high profile congressional seat. we now have three candidates advancing to the november election. front runner sam liccardo will face joe simitian and evan low. they finalized the results today. it is now all eyes on november 5th. nbc's gia vang spoke with the candidates. >> reporter: after nearly a month of ballot counting that ended in seesawing results, it is officially a tie for second place in the 16th congressional district race. both moving onto november to create a three way general election. >> no one could imagine this would be a tie for a congressional race. >> call it what you will.

a roller coaster, a wild ride. a cliff hanger. but it was definitely worth the wait. >> reporter: both campaigns for evan low and joe simitian have signaled they are not going to pay for a costly recount. after they certified the rare result thursday. >> a win is a win. we are in. >> we are excited to be able to advance into the general election. >> reporter: both campaigns finished with 16.6% of the primary vote. they will face off against former san jose mayor sam liccardo who captured 21% of the vote. his campaign didn't address the novelty of the results saying we welcome the opportunity to talk to voters about the issues of the communities. as for the final additions to the race, they say it belongs to anyone. >> i think having choice also strengthening the capacity of candidates. to work very hard. as our district expects exceptionalism, two slots wasn't enough. >> we have seven months now.

there will be a new electorate. literally, probably double the size of the number of folks who came out in the primary. >> reporter: bay area political analyst larry expects around 70% voter turnout in november which means more than 180,000 more votes to be had by any of the candidates. >> you reinforce who you already have. then you go out and look for those folks you think are getable. liccardo is probably closer to the center than the other two. simitian a little more to the left. low, even more so, the district leans left. >> reporter: he says the bottom line in this miraculous race where the winner takes all? >> it will be a matter of who can run the best campaign between now and november. >> reporter: gia vang, nbc bay area news. one of california's most notorious convicted killers is trying to overturn his death sentence. richard allen davis was

convicted of the kidnapping and murder of polly klaas in petaluma. she was kidnapped during a slumber party and her body was found two months later. he was sentenced to death in 1996. his lawyers argue a 2022 law invalidates his sentence enhancements from prior convictions entitling him to a full sentencing. prosecutors argue it doesn't apply to his sentence. also tomorrow, a survivor of the half-moon bay shooting rampage is expected to speak out at a news conference. he is suing one of the farms involved. pedro felix romero perez and his older brother jose worked at the california terra garden where the gunman opened fire in january of 2023. pedro survived. his brother did not. his brother was one of the seven people that were killed. know pedro and his brother's family are suing the owner of that farm. they say farm management failed to secure the farm and protect workers.

we have been unable to reach the farm for comment. the suspect is due in court later this month. new at 11:00, president biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke for the first time today since an israeli air strike killed seven aid workers in gaza. mr. biden called the deaths unacceptable. here in the bay area, there is a push to raise funds to help the people of gaza. jocelyn moran has more. >> reporter: the rain came down here in los gatos tonight, but that didn't stop people from coming down here to support businesses who will then give those funds to islamic relief usa. tonight, many in los gatos stood in line with their umbrellas buying tacos and pastries to support palestinian owned businesses. >> it is important to show up in spaces like this. especially if you know we may not be palestinian. but just make sure people know we are supporting and here for

the cause. >> reporter: businesses here include amigos based in willow glen and ken's coffee. >> the timing of this event is huge. there are over 32,000 victims in gaza. >> reporter: more than 32,000 people have been killed in gaza according to palestinian officials and just this weekend, an israeli air strike killed seven world central kitchen workers there. israel says it is committed to opening additional aid routes to allow for increased assistance to flow into gaza. it comes after a call with president biden who warned of a potential shift in u.s. policy. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken says the president wants to see concrete action. >> to address civilian harm and the safety of aid workers. >> reporter: the money the business has received will go to islamic relief usa who tells us they work with partners on the ground in gaza. >> we are working to get the aid in and helping to get as many families, food, and water

well, you might have felt them tonight. two earthquakes in plumas county. a 4.5 earthquake. then a 4.3 quake shortly after at the same location. no damage or injuries have been reported. people in solano county told the usgs they felt the shaking. okay, it is a new twist on the smash and grab.

thieves rush up, break out windows. while the driver waits at a red light. they steal purses and backpacks right from the passenger seat. the crime was recently caught on camera in vallejo and quickly went viral on tiktok. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez spoke with the victim in this exclusive interview. [ screaming ] >> no! no! >> reporter: this is a tiktok dash cam video that has gone viral. the terrifying screams of a woman fighting back as a masked man smashed through her car window while she was stopped at a red light in vallejo. >> watching the video back and hearing my screams is a terrifying moment. to just realize how much stress and pain i was in. it was absolutely terrifying. >> reporter: 26-year-old caroline was on her way to work tuesday morning. vibing out to beyonce's new album when the man jumped out of the suv beside her. >> i heard the crash, immediately grabbed my bag and

a few seconds into me holding onto it, i thought oh my god, i'm being robbed. >> reporter: instinctively, she grabbed onto her purse and lunchbox for dear life before her attacker finally gave up and she was able to drive to the police station. >> i'm so grateful to be alive, to be unharmed. i have the tiniest cut on my finger from the glass but that's the most minor damage. at the end of the day, i'm so happy to be okay. i appreciate everyone's comments. >> reporter: caroline's tiktok comments have gotten millions of views. >> that video went viral because beyonce was playing in the background. you have happy music but then deathly screams and it is just such a juxtaposition. >> reporter: she says sharing her story has been therapeutic. but she wants others to learn from it. >> just be cautious and careful of where you are putting yourself. where you are putting your things. who is around you. keep that head on a swivel at

all times. >> reporter: caroline's purse is still full of glass while she is happy she still has it, she knows she got really lucky. >> it could have been so much worse. >> reporter: this afternoon, vallejo police confirmed a second woman was victimized at another intersection 45 minutes after caroline's attack. same suspect and vehicle description. so far, no arrest. in vallejo, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. in the south bay now, a traffic stop turned into a major drug bust. san jose police say it started back in november when police pulled over joshua jordan and found drugs in his car. that discovery launched a four- month investigation which ended last month when they arrested jordan and jonathan correll jr. the men were receiving crypto currency for the drugs. then shipping them in the mail. they faced several charges including narcotics trafficking. okay, let's take you

outside, give you a live look at san francisco where city leaders are celebrating a drop in crime. mayor's office says violent crime dropped 14% compare today the same time last year. property crimes like break-ins, burglaries and other thefts saw a huge drop down 32%. mayor breed credits the work of local kaw enforcement working with federal and state agencies. we are headed into friday. jeff ranieri is here. the giants home opener. a lot of good things happening this weekend. >> 70s and 80s in the seven day forecast. >> that's nice. >> that will be really good. we still have this last batch tonight sitting through the bay area. moving off toward the south. rainfall at morgan hill just after midnight and one more day of this to go. the storm system we have been dealing with today, it will move off toward the east, but still going to get some of the

back edge of this moving in that cold air and more rain. friday morning we expect scattered rain to start. i think we will have some sun mixing in and just some cloud cover as well. so keep the umbrella handy for tomorrow. the coverage of rain now does not look nearly as widespread. we will hold onto the spotty rain and thunderstorm chances right into the afternoon. overall totals a quarter inch unless some of our eastern counties could get in on about a quarter to half an inch especially from dublin to livermore. it just felt more like january than spring out there. and the numbers tomorrow are going even lower. we are back down to 39 in the trivalley. south bay right here at 41. low 40s in the peninsula. also dipping to the coldest here in the north bay at 38. and for the east bay, 40. daytime highs don't really look

a whole lot better so jacket weather into the afternoon. this is all we could do for you tomorrow. just 50s here across the bay area. 58 toward santa rosa. 56 concord. 57 in san jose. over to san francisco, we'll be at a high of 56. and speaking of which, if you are headed out to sf for the home opener, maybe you'll get there a little early before that 1:35 first pitch. we'll have 52 at 11:00 a.m. then a spotty chance of a shower 1:00 right through 3:00. doesn't look like anything that would rain out the game. just remember to bring the jacket and also the poncho. you want to see this thaw out and for things to warm up? look at this ten day forecast here, we are at 72 next monday. low 80s wednesday and thursday. the following weekend also looks pretty good with mid 70s . san jose and a lot of the bay area getting in on 70s on monday. and up to 83 by next wednesday and thursday. on the sevenday forecast, weekend coming in good. it will be chilly. but our rain chances will

could we see a vaccine for breast cancer in the next five years? there is promising new research from a san jose company which may make it possible. they have been working on a vaccine for survivors. it is the most aggressive and deadly form of breast cancer. now they presented the research in washington dc today. saying that the first clinical trial was successful. it involved 16 people and it had a 75% of them showed a very robust immune response. phase two of that trial would take at least five years to complete. a new study appears to show the bay area's embrace of electric vehicles is having a positive impact on our climate in crisis. scientists at uc berkeley

completed a study looking at how the total carbon emissions changed in the bay area over the last five years. that study found it decreased the total carbon emissions by about 2% between 2018 and 2022. they credit the spike in evs . >> the state's goal is for net zero in 2045. and to get there, we need annual reductions of 3.7% that continue until that time. this is about halfway there so it puts us on a really good start. >> the state goals of 2045, san francisco's goals to get net zero is 2040 and the city plans to install 5,000 chargers by 2030. all right, up next, a huge night for the warriors and we will once again touch on the as situatio

all right, the warriors picking the perfect time to go on a winning streak. they remain the 10th and final playoff seed. tonight, a big showdown in houston, the rockets are the team right behind the warriors in the standings. klay thompson went off. he and steph curry had 29 points each. warriors were in control throughout. the big finish for moses moody there. warriors beat the rockets. final score, 133-110. in san jose tonight, the sharks season is almost over. they have the worst record in the nhl. tonight, the playoff bound la kings beat the sharks.
