right now at 11:00, illegal sideshows in the suburbs, these wild and reckless are now taking over intersections in our smaller cities. >> we're talking mountain view, palo alto, all of them over the weekend. that has a lot of people concerned. nbc bay area is jocelyn moran is in mountain view. it is becoming much more common that you just don't expect. >> reporter: one of the sideshows from over the weekend happened here in mountain view. you can still see some of the tires skidmarks here tonight. police say the cars took off shortly after they got here and that one person was hurt. sideshow after sideshow, in mountain view police say it happened shortly before midnight on saturday night on bernardo avenue and east middlefield road. video shows at least 100 people looking on and drivers and their cars with passengers out

the window. 120-year-old woman from pittsburgh broke her ankle. in palo alto, a similar sideshow, tonight on page bill road and coyote hill road, tires skidmarks and several circles can be seen. and in menlo park, this video shows cars coming dangerously close to spectator saturday night, it happened in an area with home and businesses. a couple of people who live nearby didn't want to go on camera but tell us it lasted only a few minutes before police got there. others in the area says that doesn't happen often here. >> every now and then you will see a car going fast on the corners and whatnot. but at the sideshow with a bunch of multiple people. took adding that he thinks they can be very dangerous. >> showing kids can hit, a lot of these cars on the turns. doing donuts, just hitting the cars. and it is sad, it is sad

to see. but what can you do? >> reporter: kevin is worried someone walking could get hurt, even though it is rare, the concern of safety in the suburbs, we reached out to mountain view's mayor and police. police tonight had no one available to talk. later that same night, more sideshows. this time, in oakland and off the bay bridge. driver stopped traffic on westbound 80 for around 20 minutes before it chp detained two minors and arrested two adults. adults say that sideshows are outright dangerous. >> for the safety of the public, and we would ask that those who are considering or actually engaging in these activities would think twice. >> reporter: jocelyn moran, nbc bay area news. >> out of the east bay, an intense firefight on the way

right now in hayward. this is video just into the newsroom. you can see the flames and the thick black smoke filling the sky. firefighters say this is a commercial building between the intersection of hall. crews are in defensive mode right now, still trying to stop the spread. of course we will keep you posted throughout the newscast. tends moments in the posey tube. this is one of the tunnels that connects oakland and alameda. you can see the backup here traffic to a halt around 7:30 this evening. cars were essentially trapped while firefighters battled a pickup truck fire inside the tunnel ultimately the posey tube was evacuated, crews used large fans to clear out the smoke. that, back open at this hour. tesla is settling a high profile lawsuit involving an apple engineer who died in a car crash in 2018. and at the center of the case, tesla's autopilot system. the legal move just as jury selection and the trial starts this week.

pete sirota with why some legal experts leave tesla decided to settle. >> reporter: the fact that a settlement was reached here suggests that tesla did see exposure if this case went to a jury. >> reporter: legal analyst stephen clark is explaining why he believes tesla decided the wrongful death lawsuit. in march of 2018, he died in a car crash along 101 and mountain view when his bottleneck crashed into a barrier when the autopilot switched on. the ntsb said was at least partly to blame for the crash, possible driver distraction and bubble medic road construction. the following year, the family sued tesla over the incident, the company exaggerated the capabilities of itself driving technology. during the 2019 press conference lawsuit, wong's widow express the pain over her husband and the father to her two kids.

and a juvenile passenger to the hospital with major injuries. the intersection was blocked off so officers could investigate. a member of the san francisco sheriff's department is facing multiple violent felony charges. 49-year-old deputy sheriff jonathan was arraigned today in connection to a domestic violence case. his ex-girlfriend reported the alleged abuse later this month after fighting a tracking device on her car. now she claims he strangled her and later attacked her at work. charges include domestic violence, battery and assault. the officer has pled not guilty, he will be in court next week. the chp is still looking for the gunman in the freeway shooting last friday night, it happened on the on ramp from ashby avenue to interstate 80 in berkeley. chp says the 22nd freeway shooting of the year in the bay area. if that case continues, we can see 80 shootings this year. and that number would actually be a 27% decrease from last year.

the search continues for the driver of an suv involved in a deadly crash in concord a nine-year-old girl died and four of her family members have major injuries. that suv veered off 680 at the 242 split early yesterday morning, it rolled multiple times before landing upside down in the dirt median. the young girl who died was ejected from the car. chp says it appears at least three of the passengers, including that little girl, were not wearing seatbelts. the driver took off on foot, we do not know the relationship of the driver to the victims. how to revitalize the downtown areas of some california cities. the first meeting of a new committee that is focused on downtown recovery across the state. london breed weighed in along with the mayors of south beach, longview and riverside. recovering from the pandemic. office buildings and storefronts. the mayors addressed several

san francisco will open on pine street this summer. did it live up to the hype? tonight, there's still a buzz in the air after the total solar eclipse. something that we won't see around here for another 21 years. this is what it looked like in maine. you see it in totality. the moon passing between the earth and the sun, entirely blocking it. this is a time-lapse video. daylight turning into darkness. the eclipse moving across more northern texas. here in the bay area, we got a different view. here's what we saw, about a 35 percent eclipse. those safety glasses, still necessary. but if you are one of the 15 states in the path of totality this is a day you will probably never forget and for many, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. here is nbc's jay gray. >> reporter: today, millions of americans looking up. >> truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. >> reporter: glasses, telescopes, everyone eager for a view of total darkness during

no totality for us but the eclipse was still a hot topic around town. astronomy professors health class outside to get in on the wonder. special telescopes with solar lenses, everyone could get up and look at a close shot in the moon partially blocking the sun. they also got a look at the sunspot in the middle that is larger than the earth. >> i'm a sci-fi nerd so seeing this in real life is pretty cool. you see it in tv shows and movies but to see it in real life with glasses is pretty awesome and it was cool to learn about. >> reporter: the exploratorium pass out 1000 free eclipse viewing glasses but sold 200 more. at least 1200 people watched the partial eclipse there. inside the exploratorium, mexico and texas, two areas within the zone of totality. a lot of cheering when daylight faded into darkness. so when is the next total solar eclipse? if you're willing to travel internationally you can catch one in 2026 for greenland,

club firefighters are being hailed as heroes tonight after they safely rescued a horse. contra costa county fire that they posted on x this morning. the horse, named magic and got stuck in some mud and branches on a steep slope. it took them nearly four hours, they finally pulled him out, and took him back to his owner who is anxiously awaiting pick and you could maybe call it a magical moment. the battle is escalating over the renaming of oakland international airport. san francisco is now threatening legal action if oakland changes its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. nbc's terry mcsweeney has the

new details. >> reporter: san francisco city leaders tonight are threatening legal action if oakland international airport leaders go ahead with their plan to try to change its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. >> oakland renaming proposal will cause immense confusion and chaos for travelers. especially visitors who do not speak or read english. >> reporter: at oakland international tonight, man from dubai agrees. >> it might be easier to just have a different name. so oakland bay i think is easy to keep the same name. to >> reporter: spokeswoman kaylee says the proposed name modification will clarify, not confused. the new name identifies where oa k is absolutely located. the change is needed because oakland has lost flights and destinations because people are not aware how close to san francisco really is. oakland international today,

this traveler sided with san francisco. >> there is a beautiful community in oakland, it is an incredible city. i think, i think for practical reasons it is is more important for people to know exactly where they're going when they are picking a flight. >> reporter: at sfo this traveler sided with oakland. >> i want people to know exactly, i want them to have the choice and feel like they can fly into either airport and come into the bay area. >> reporter: oakland officials also flaunting results of the east bay resident. shows the majority, 51%, are somewhat comfortable with the name change compared to 34%, not too or not at all comfortable. this is not an issue to be decided by a show of hands. >> reporter: the current proposal also infringes on sfo's trademarks. sfo began operating almost a century ago as san francisco international airport or san francisco airport through most of its history and we have had these trademarks for so long that they are incontestable under federal law. >> reporter: meets on thursday to take up a name change idea

and i could be the trigger for san francisco to file this lawsuit. city attorney tells me monetary damages could be a part of it. at oakland international airport, terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. honoring indigenous history. a bilingual street sign was released in lafayette. lafayette circle, also a new utility box wrapped that features illustrations of indigenous women and land development statement. the goal is to show respect to the area's native people. >> this is a way that we can honor our past and know that we have taken land away from our ancestors and that we acknowledge and honor their presence here through their descendents today. >> reporter: city council adopted the statement last year as part of a year-long history. dungeness crab season is getting cut short again this year in the bay area.

the season started late and today it ended early. the commercial crab season usually begins in november but this year was delayed until january. and that it last less than three months. the shorter the window, an effort to protect humpback whales during crab season. migrating whales sometime get tangled in the crab gear. our meteorologist, looking at that temperatures, 58. that is pretty warm for one of our nights. >> compared to the frosted visors that we had where we had 30s as we went to bed and woke up. today's daytime high was 72 degrees for san jose and it is just the beginning. so let's give you a tour of the bay area and see what our daytime highs look like throughout the afternoon. san jose right now enjoyed some pure conditions. here's what it looks like right now in san francisco. if you look at the high temperatures this afternoon, we get a high of 66 and noticed the wind speeds have significantly calmed down and

here's another look into parts of oakland. 53 degrees right now. saw a high of 56. also nice and calm. tran56 right now, but we saw a high this afternoon of 74. let's take it to the mountains because tahoe has some snowy conditions coming up yet again, i will get to that in a second. i want to show you 28 degrees right now and it is really beautiful and calm. thanks to this high pressure. showcasing itself on satellite radar. you're thinking, i don't see anything. that is the high-pressure brick you can see the definition right here where you are noticing that dry orange glow without any cloud cover, high pressures would begin to settle in, helping warm us up just to give you an idea perspective wise in san jose, at this hour, right about seven degrees warmer and into the early morning hours, we are also going to see those 40s and 50s. i really don't think you are going to need any sort of

heater turned on. just some extra layers. aside from that, really mild overnight lows until the early morning. as far as your daytime highs for tomorrow, it is going to start to bump up into the upper 70s for los gatos. check out hayward, 75. enter oakland, san francisco, half moon bay are getting toward the 70s but by wednesday we are going to be seeing 80s on the map and this is going to include parts of the south but also the tri-valley, check out concord, 82.80 degrees and if you notice even around the bay, the peninsula and san francisco we are going to be seeing some 70s on the map. the long-range outlook right now, you see this high pressure, warm tuesday through thursday as you look at the timestamp right on the corner there on friday, we are monitoring the arrival of a low pressure system. right now circulating a bit more toward central and southern california but this placement could change. it could go further north. it does kind of make its way up further north we will see a winded tree for the sierra and we will also see a drop in temperatures. erin wise, it will be closer to

former president trump lost the last minute bid to delay his impending new york city has many trial. his attorneys claim that the delay was necessary, the pretrial publicity tainted the jury pool. today a judge disagreed and also approved the questionnaire for jury selection as well as instructions for prospective jurors in the trial. it really only impacts mr. trump's request for a delay, not his underlying change of venue motion. the trial centers on charges he also falsified business records

related to alleged hush money payments made on his behalf to adult home star, stormy daniels. the white house is getting student debt relief another shot. president biden unveiling a new plan to cancel what he calls runaway interest on student loans. under the plan, some borrowers could get up to $20,000 of unpaid interest on their federal student debt forgiven regardless of their income. the program was carefully written to avoid any legal challenges and it could in a fit up to 25 million borrowers. looking and airbnb in hawaii may soon be a thing in the past. two bills moving in the state legislator would allow counties across the island to eliminate vacation rentals. supporters say it would help alleviate hawaii's housing crisis for locals, which is made worse by the wildfires in lahaina. opponents say it would eliminate jobs and remove a key source of income for many homeowners in hawaii. up next, a lot of basketball, a lot of celebrating. celebrating.
