11:00 am
back to you. >> all right. thank you, mike. certainly has been a busy morning across the bay area and, of course, we will continue to monitor that. the map here, it shows how it is -- a lot of people trying to get around and all of these areas and you can see the areas that aren't even effected are now affected because people are trying to do the work around there. you're seeing oakland, that's one of the areas we're seeing, along 880 you can see there, 580 being affected because of that and then you have everything with the golden gate bridge. of course, keep following everything because we're going to keep following it.
11:01 am
bob and regina are in oakland. >> there's been so much going on. this is at the golden gate bridge where the skyranger is overhead. it has been at a standstill for hours. first, the southbound directions of the golden gate bridge shut down by pro-palestinian supporters that blocked the bridge there at the center of your screen. and we have seen little to no movement at all. that is when the chp emerged on the bridge, as well, shutting down the other lanes, as well. so there is no movement on the golden gate bridge. this includes pedestrians andnd cyclists, as well. the backup spans for miles with no one going anywhere.
11:02 am
we have seen arrests made this morning, about seven so far. multiple chp units on the scene as well as fire and police backups. really, no movement. >> ginger there at the golden gate bridge toll plaza for us this morning. okay. ginger, i know a lot has been going on in that area or, in some case, not a lot going on. talk about what you've been able to see and what you've been able to find out. >> reporter: well, speaking of those chp units, i'm told by someone that's still on the bridge that a new squadron of chp vehicles has just arrived. they are currently making arrests. all of the standalone protesters, they say, have been arrested. now, authorities are working to arrest those that have been connected to one another and their cars. so far, as far as the scene here on the golden gate bridge, it has not changed. it's pretty much been the same this morning since we've been
11:03 am
here. the toll plaza, as you can see, this never happens. this is a very rare sight. no vehicles passing through the toll plaza. the only cars we've seen pass through are chp vehicles, bridge patrol vehicles, or park police. on the other side of that, you can still see all of those cars backed up. that is the northbound lane, northbound side heading onto the golden gate bridge. that is also the way that we attempted to get to the bridge this morning. at that time, hours ago, the 19th avenue exit is when that backup started. i imagine that is now further out there. you can see the golden gate bridge authority there, vehicles are still blocking traffic. those cars have been sitting out there for quite a while. these lanes have been completely empty. pedestrian lanes and bike lanes also cleared. we talked to a couple people who have actually walked off of the bridge. one woman who had to just leave
11:04 am
her car with someone else that she was in the car with and walk off the bridge so she could make her appointment in the city today. those protesters are still there, as mentioned. authorities are working on those arrests. they are expecting to make about 25 to 30 arrests. everyone that is on the bridge is expected to be arrested. now, we're told by chp they will be brought to san francisco. we will wait to see when those people arrested will be taken off of the bridge. but those cars have stalled and stopped all of that traffic. initially, it was on the southbound lanes, then they also closed the northbound lanes, as well. the biggest challenge to this, marcus and laura, as we saw over in oakland, is also working on disconnecting the tubing. i'm told what it's been described as is steel tubing that is connected people along with cars.
11:05 am
we have a photo of that that actually shows a closer viewpoint of what that might look like and how much difficulty people -- authorities are having in disconnecting that tubing. because as has been describd by bob, it has taken a while and is unique in the way it is connected and difficult to remove. >> yeah, we've been seeing that. >> reporter: guys, back to you. >> thanks, ginger. yeah, we've been seeing that. if you look at your screen there, you can see people standing next to those cars. you can see the tubing ginger was just talking about. want to go right now to mike inouye, monitoring the workarounds and how traffic has been at a standstill. people just trying to make their way the best they can right now. >> a lot of folks probably heard about this early in the morning and thought, well, by the time i go, it'll be fine. right now, if you're going, it's not fine. we're looking at northbound 880. from the coliseum, 66th avenue, this is where we've been backed
11:06 am
up or stopped for the last hour, i'd say, heading northbound. there is one lane, a service lane all the way over on the left, close to the center divide, that is open at the scene. it looks like, oh, it's not bad, we can get through the backup, but not when you note how far it is. from the coliseum, we're 4 to 4.5 miles to the closure of the majority of lanes of northbound 880. north 880 at the 5th exit there, it's affected. use westbound 580. this morning, 580, highway 13 all jammed up, so is highway 24. they've all recovered nicely, but they're undoubtedly seeing more traffic. 580, chp allowed the big rigs to go westbound, as well. that happens when northbound 880 has a problem. we're looking at southbound 880 at this portion. mild slowing for a short section from about the tube downtown, where it is slow as an alternate, over alameda and into
11:07 am
downtown oakland. that's fine but still very slow coming through. 880 itself is distracted by the activity, so that's why we have the slower sensors for the one slow section. the bigger problem is the full closure of the southbound 880 at 7th. that's where the folks made their way to the on-ramp. there are a lot of pedestrians, bicyclists out there on the freeway itself, and they are now blocking the lanes of southbound 880 where velena continues to follow that activity. away from the bay bridge, take the maze and go on 580 or the city streets. a lot of major streets take you from the area of oakland. now, as we look over here, this is the golden gate bridge which is also closed, both directions remain closed. they're removing protesters from the bridge. there are so many vehicles and activity, they have to keep both directions, all lanes closed. we'll show that to you shortly. i want to show you do 101 itself coming down into the area is
11:08 am
jammed up as you're heading through the city. it's backed up after 19th avenue. you can't get on the bridge so traffic control will take you from there, or some folks have been sitting there for hours, guys. back to you. >> pay attention to what mike is saying when he talks about the commute for you. i have been looking up my commute home. i would have to normally take 800. i've looked at more than one different map to get home. none are showing this backup we're seeing here. for viewers out there, before you head out, pay attention to what mike is saying. those apps aren't necessarily giving the most accurate, up to date information right now. thanks, mike, for that. >> all right, marcus. >> good to know. mike is on standby for us. live look at the golden gate bridge where we're waiting for a little more activity there. we're joined by darrel horner.
11:09 am
he is with the chp. darrel, are you there? >> hi, i'm here. >> okay. tell me -- what can you tell me about what is going on at the golden gate bridge? >> all right. i'm currently here on scene at the mid-span of the golden gate bridge. so far, we've arrested approximately 15 demonstrators. there's still a few demonstrators who are chained up to drivers inside the cars. we're working up a plan to try to get them out of there as safely as we can. we're trying to do what we can to get traffic moving again. >> right, exactly. what are you up against? do you know roughly how many people are chained there together? >> it's hard to say right now. i don't have any eyes on it right now. there's at least three or four cars that i can see right now that have somebody standing outside chained up to the driver inside. >> so you need a way to bust the
11:10 am
chains loose and then do you anticipate towing the cars off the bridge, as well? >> yeah. looks like we'll probably have to tow them to get the traffic flowing again. yeah, we're working up a plan right now. keep everybody safe while we're doing it. >> you've dealt with this in the past. the training you have, we have seen it on the bay bridge, has training in the past helped with this? is it helping with this situation? >> yeah, you know, we're well organized. we take our time, make a plan, and do everything, fall back on training and previous experiences. just to go in there, make sure everybody is safe while we're doing it. >> i know safety is of utmost importance. you've also closed down the opposite lanes of the golden gate bridge, as well. there's a lot of frustrated commuters out there. understandably, you have work to do, but they may want to know, why is this taking so long?
11:11 am
>> we want to keep everybody safe while we're doing this, minimize incidents. we want to protect the people demonstrating as well as the officers. it gives us space to work out here. we want to take our time and make sure it's a safe scene for everybody to operate in. >> are you in communication with the demonstrators out there as to if you can move them all quickly? are they asking for any demands at this point? >> we have a liaison. i don't know of demands at this time, but it is peaceful, the demonstration. we're working on resolving the situation with the liaison. >> in the past, we have seen these protesters overtake different bay area bridges, as well. the thing is, it looks like they drive their cars up, they stop them, then immediately stop
11:12 am
traffic. but, oftentimes, in the past, say on the bay bridge, for example, they've staggered their cars, as well, sometimes even throwing their car keys into the bay, making it even more difficult to tow these cars away. do we know what the situation is here? are you able to assess that at all? >> i don't have information on that, if they've tossed their keys or anything like that. we do have tow trucks on standby to be able to move them quickly once we get the situation resolved. >> and i do see officers standing not only in front of where the protesters are but also in the back or staggered throughout that area. are you all going through to make sure that those who are participating, the demonstrators, are in that area, or if they're scattered throughout the standstill of traffic? >> so far, we've confirmed at least two of the rows are a part of the demonstration. we have a line of officers to
11:13 am
ensure that nobody else comes up to instigate any physical altercations or anything like that. >> we see the heavy barrage of officers there on the scene, as we're taking a live look at the golden gate bridge as we talk to you right now. do you have any sort of eta of when this could get open again? >> no eta at this time. it's a dynamic situation. we'll provide updates as they come on twitter and other social medias we have. keep checking back. also, 511 is a good tool, as well, to use. >> okay. all right. >> as you make the arrests there, are you keeping those that you arrest there at the scene, or are you taking them straightaway? how is that working? >> yeah, we have transportation lined up for them, and they'll be processed at that location here. >> how many more demonstrators do you anticipate are out there right now? >> let's see here, it's hard to say right now.
11:14 am
we'll find out in a bit. >> what's the biggest thing you're against right now? >> yeah, making sure we do this safely and make sure nobody gets injured. we just want to make sure that we get this resolved as quick as we can. >> darrel horner at the golden gate bridge with the chp. it's busy out there. we continue to look at the golden gate bridge. you see chp actually escorting someone off the bridge with handcuffs at this time. they are making arrests. the protesters have shut down the bridge for several hours now. we'll continue ouroverage on c
11:15 am
11:16 am
we are back covering the protests shutting down bridges and roadways across the bay area. right now, you're looking at where protesters shut down
11:17 am
northbound 880. this is near 5th street. you can see right here, this is what officer were up against. they had to manually break free people from barrels that were filled with concrete and steel tubing they had their hands inside. it took hours to break through two to three demonstraors throughout. we have bob redell, live where we saw that scene there. you have been following and watching closely as those officers release many of the demonstrators that are out there for us this morning or out there this morning. talk about what's happening now. a few of the lanes have been reopened. >> one lane of northbound 880 has been reopened. it's the left shoulder that's been reopened. it has been reopened since, you know, early 10:00 hour, so almost an hour. this is south of the embarcadero 5th avenue exit. you have three oil barrels still
11:18 am
in the middle of the road, and you've got at least three protesters attached to the barrels. when i say attached, they've got their arms in the barrels. the protesters sent an email. 280 pounds of concrete in each barrel. it's not clear how the arms are still inside, if they're latched onto something or encased, but you can't get the protesters out without cutting through the barrels with metal grinders and saws and using the jackhammer that chp is uing now. they have the brown tarp. the protesters in the foreground with the blue headset on, and they have the tools. they were using a jackhammer to get through the concrete. the yellow jackhammer there. once they get through the concrete, they're able to pull the protesters out and take them into custody. it takes time. the last barrel took 30 minutes
11:19 am
or maybe longer. they've been working on this barrel since 11:00, so 20 minutes. hopefully they'll get this one done in 10 minutes, ideal, but they have a couple more barrels and protesters to deal with. this is not going to be done within the next few moments. it'll be some time. unfortunately, the 11:00 hour, this is well past the morning commute. it's a headache for many people getting to and from work this morning. >> crazy, man. i hope nobody gets hurt. whatever the situation is, i wish they'd fix it. everybody being late for work this morning. have to take the streets. nobody get on 880. it's crazy right now. >> reporter: unfortunately, it's still crazy. southbound 880 was never shutdown, but you have looky-loos stopping to see what's going on in the northbound direction, creating the backup. northbound direction, as i
11:20 am
mentioned, still backed up. not shut down anymore but still backed up tremendously because it was shutdown for quite a few hours. the left lane, as you can see in the foreground there, with the bakery truck, that's north lane heading northbound. one lane of traffic open. chp is working. we've seen them out here with a jackhammer. there's the jackhammer. electric chisel. a blade, a diamond saw, and a hammer to cut through these oil barrels which are made of steel, and then the 280 pounds of concrete the protesters claimed they put in there and put their arms in there. they're trying to free these people. as you heard the chp officer at the golden gate bridge mention, you see the same level of care here on northbound 880. the officers want to get these people released without them being hurt. we've not seen any injuries yet, fortunately. they're trying to get the
11:21 am
protesters out as quickly as possible without them suffering any sort of injury. marcus, laura? >> good to see no one has been injured. at least one lane northbound of 880 is moving along for us this midday. thank you. >> some progress. this is a situation near southbound 880 near 7th. center median, people became so frustrated, they started cutting through just to go through the other side. dangerous predicament. chp are trying to control the crowd and get people moving. not break to take it into your own hands. we want to go to our bay area's velena jones, she's out at the site where there are tons of protesters. it looks like some are almost having a sit-in out there. >> reporter: there's at least 200 protesters protesting on southbound 880.
11:22 am
they're now sitting down. they have their bikes, their signs. there's two different groups here. if you'll take a look, you have the main group that's right here where traffic would normally be merging from the on-ramp into 8 880. then you have the group that's holding back the thousands and thousands of cars that are stuck in this traffic, that are back there. there is also a caltrans truck. they didn't want that to come through and break through the barrier. recently spoke to the drivers who said they have been sitting there since 7:30. there has been agitation throughout the hours. they said that was kind of reduced. drivers, after realizing they were not going to go anywhere, kind of gave up. i've talked to some people that say that they have been passing the time by eating, listening to music in the car. one group of people actually had
11:23 am
stools and were sitting in a circle. we've also seen some protesters actually lay in front of the cars over there so they don't break the barrier and do not inch closer to the main group of protesters here. throughout the course of the morning, we've heard several chants. we have not seen, unlike other areas throughout the east bay, we have not seen anyone link arms. we have not seen anything that is holding these protesters together structurally or anything like that. this is people walking around 880. there is a clear line of delineation between the protesters and law enforcement. you will see there are several dozen chp officers here on the freeway, kind of keeping a line here to make sure protesters do not move further onto 880 here. we have not seen any interaction between law enforcement and the
11:24 am
protesters so far. we have not seen them try to break this up at all and have not really seen any conflict, for the most part. i talked to one of the protesters and said, how long do you plan on staying out here? he said, as long as it takes. we're trying to do a peaceful protest. they want to make sure that their message is heard. we have not heard a timeline of when chp will break this up. we are standing by and monitoring the situation. back to you. >> velena jones southbound 880, thank you. >> we will continue to follow what's happening across the bay area this morning. this is another look at the protesters shutting down the golden gate bridge. we can tell you 15 demonstrators have been arrested in this location this morning. we've spoken to chp about
11:25 am
11:26 am
11:27 am
welcome back. we are continuing to follow protesters shutting down many areas across the bay area, from 880, the golden gate bridge, and another section of 880 at 7th avenue. now, mike iouye, of course, has been monitoring all of this. we see this backup of traffic, and we're seeing this not in one, not in two, but at least
11:28 am
three locations, and then some of the workarounds are also backed up because folks are trying to find a way around. >> i think this is southbound 101 out of the north bay. this is the only way into san francisco that you could go. the chopper was showing the full closure southbound lanes across the golden gate bridge. we'll address that in a second. we have some progress. there's less backup where usually demarcating back to about the 66th avenue overprosz overcrossing, it's less consolidated. from the coliseum, from high street all the way up to about 5th, the embarcadero exit, traveling northbound on 880. bob redell continues to report from 5th and embarcadero. that's a little farther north from where the protesters are continuing there. the removal of the protesters is the big issue. we want to make sure everybody is safe or chp wants to mike sure everybody is safe on the removal process. it's a really sort of complicated one with concrete, cement, i guess, and also some
11:29 am
tubing, chains, folks chained together on the roadways. that's what continues on northbound 880 with only your service lane, only the left lane open past the scene. that's why it is very slow recovery northbound. that's why the southbound side remains slow, because there's still a lot of activity. folks in the southbound direction are looking at the northbound and all the activity. 580 westbound, an alternate, is a great alternate. this morning it was flooded with traffic, big rigs, larger trucks. now, it is much calmer, just the slowing over here toward the maze and the bay bridge transition. coming away from the bay bridge, that's the second closure, talking about three. southbound 880, basically all lanes are blocked. we have one lane that's open, i believe, southbound 880. my traffic sources say the right and center lanes are blocked, but velena shows all the people on the roadway and on the on-ramp to southbound 880 at 7th. avoid that portion as you come
11:30 am
away from the bay bridge. take the bay bridge and exit over toward the maze. then you'll get about oakland throughout 580 and you'll find your way on the larger city streets just south of where 7th street is. basically from 980 south. over to the golden gate bridge. we talked about that. still remains with the closure. jammed up northbound, highway 1, 19th, getting to the scene. southbound 101 coming through, you can't access the bridge. you saw folks stop from the sky ranger shot, and some shifted to the richmond bridge, making the east shore freeway continue with a slow drive even now. and busy east bay freeways. we continue our live coverage happening across the bay area. thank you for
