[ cheers and applause ] i'm looking forward. they're saying it is going to be the highest rated president's day weekend ever. [ light laughter ] yep. president's day goes back to when george washington asked americans to honor his birthday with huge savings on mattresses. [ laughter ] >> steve: wait. >> jimmy: some really big news, today. the judge in former president trump's new york civil fraud trial ruled that he has to pay $355 million and is banned from doing any business in new york for three years. [ cheers and applause ] he owes $355 million. even crazier, trump said he's going to make mexico pay for it. [ laughter ] i don't understand. that makes no sense. you can tell trump is desperate to raise money because now it's called the at&t diet coke trump tower. [ laughter ] and you go, "oh." seriously, don't be surprised if in 30 days trump tower becomes a permanent spirit halloween. [ laughter ] permanent. that's it. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ that's it. of course, trump is furious with the decision. he was like, "nobody drives my companies out of business except me." [ laughter ] that's right. trump was banned from doing business in new york for three years and was fined $355 million.

it could be the end of the trump organization as we know it. but after the news broke, some other companies reached out with some helpful words. which i thought was nice. for instance, radio shack said, "just walk towards the light." [ laughter ] then blockbuster said, "don't cry because it's over. smile because it happened." [ laughter and applause ] that's touching. here's one. here's one. toys "r" us said, "maybe you'll be back one day in some weird way that confuses everyone." [ laughter ] >> steve: aw. >> jimmy: are you back? after that, bed bath & beyond said, "you're about to find out what the 'beyond' really feels like." [ laughter ] and time warner -- time warner said, "just change your name to spectrum and hope people think you no longer suck." [ audience ohs ] up next, jcpenney said, "do what we did and just hand the keys to a family of raccoons." trump mattresses, trump casino, and trump university said, "welcome home, we've been waiting for you." [ cheers and applause ] nice of them to reach out. well, some tv news. apparently, paramount plus and peacock have discussed combining into one streaming service. the merger could be huge. in just one place you could find hit shows like "yellowstone" and -- [ laughter ] countless, countless others. but that's true. paramount and peacock could merge. this feels like the last two people in a bar at closing time deciding to go home together. [ laughter ] it's like -- "i'll show you my password if you show me yours. let's go." the merging could be promising. although, i'm not sure about the name, "ppcock." a little -- a little panel. a panel discussion after one of the screenings with -- reverend al sharpton was one of the guests. and he gave us some insight into, just, you know, so much about himself. like why he goes by the name al sharpton. why he wears his hair that way. and, you know, how james brown was, sort of, like, his father figure. stuff that i never really knew. i knew he was a mentor, but i didn't know, you know, to what extent. >> questlove: hey, jimmy i learned something about james brown. >> jimmy: you did? >> questlove: yeah i did. >> jimmy: what? >> questlove: i learned that he felt good. decided to call it "this is me then." >> jimmy: no. >> and capture, kind of -- and didn't even realize like it was capturing a moment in time, you know, where i, kind of, like, fell in love for the first time in that way, and wrote this whole album. and it was very that thing. and i was like, "oh, i'll call it 'this is me then.'" and then, you know, as fate would have it, you know, 20 years later, here we are. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and i'm like -- i felt inspired in the same way that i did when i did that first record. it was like, i'm going to make "this is me now." and i went in, i hadn't made an album like that in ten years. >> jimmy: it's fun. it's beautiful. but you just announced that "this is me now" the tour kicks off this summer. >> yes, we did. know, they wanted the exact specifications. he's 6'5," i'm 6'3." i'm automatically out. but i -- but i fought for this. i fought for this. so before season one, you know, usually there's an audition process. you go in one or two times. if you're lucky, you screen test. but this was during covid, so there was, like, ample opportunity to just, like -- where was i going to be? like, on a film? i'm in my basement. >> jimmy: so was the rest of the world. >> so was the rest of the world. so, they go, "we're going to read you one more time. it was pretty good." the executive -- skydance, amazon, wants to see you. so i'm like, "okay, i'll do it again." so, i show up ready. but i was cheating, 'cause i had this great setup in my house. i had an amazing camera, like a a film camera, lights. i was mic-ing myself up. i was doing the whole thing. >> jimmy: you had everything. >> i was cheat -- yeah. >> jimmy: yeah, you have to. >> you've got to -- >> jimmy: you really want it. >> you're competing against the world's finest actors for the part. >> jimmy: yes. >> so we -- so i get to near the end. we're screen testing for this thing. this is, like, the most crucial step. and i mic myself up, do my little, you know, little pat

myself dry. >> jimmy: yeah, of course. >> we get in there. and i do a scene. and it went really well, i made no mistakes, it was solid. and don granger of skydance, been tom cruise's partner for a a long time, the guy's a a legend. he goes, "yeah, um, that was a a little distracting. did you guys -- did you guys hear the -- sounded like drums or something." and nick santora, the showrunner was like, "yeah, that was -- it almost sounded like a heartbeat to me. it was all i could hear. like, we need to do -- do it again." and i was like, "oh, my god." they go, "are you wearing a a microphone?" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you were that nervous? >> i go, "oh, my god." i was that nervous. my heart was pounding so hard -- [ laughter ] -- that it distracted the entire screen test. so, i go, "pff, no." >> jimmy: i'm not wearing a -- [ laughter ] >> i go and i snuck off camera like this, and i ripped the microphone off. and i went back in. >> jimmy: and you got it. >> and then none the wiser. and i ended up with the part, so, i got lucky. but almost lost it. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: you're good. >> yeah. >> jimmy: let's talk about "ordinary angels." >> sure, beautiful film. >> jimmy: it's based on an

incredible true story. >> it's a heartbreaking story about a father who loses his wife to a rare genetic disorder, and then loses his daughter, and then his other daughter comes down with it. and he fights tooth and nail, including nature, to get her to a kidney transplant in time to save her life. and so, that's where the movie picks up. and i said, "i have to do this." and i go meet with the director, who did a phenomenal job. and the first thing he says to me when we sit down is, "you're definitely not who i had in mind for this part." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: you go, "i've heard this before." >> i was like -- >> jimmy: "what do you want, 6'5"? [ laughter ] >> i go -- yeah, totally. "i can do small and frail. just watch." and i go, "i too would not cast myself for this part." because, you know, the real ed schmitt was rail thin, he was gaunt. he had no resources, not well fed. he was a roofer, very blue collar. and he didn't look like he could punch his way out of a a blizzard. like -- >> jimmy: yeah. >> like, you're waiting for a a marvel character to step into this movie. and i go, "but i have three

kids. i know what it would be like, to, you know, the pain of losing them, and how far you would go to save one of your kids. and i can bring that to the part." and i begged for it. and luckily, i got it. and hilary swank is in the movie, she's brilliant. >> jimmy: you -- you nailed led. >> thank you very much. it's a beautiful film. bring your tissues. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and all true. and it inspires -- it will inspire you. it will give us hope in humanity again. and it's a call to action to dive into your community, and just help, broken toys and all, just to help wherever you can, so. >> jimmy: yeah.
