middle east. israel has carried out a military strike against iran. a source familiar with the situation confirming this to nbc news this morning. we're joined with the latest. good morning, matt. what do we know about the scope of this military strike? >> reporter: good morning, frances. in a word, i think we can say it appears to have been limited. we don't fknow very much about it, the actual details so far. the israeli government, the iranian government, we're still not seeing major high-level responses yet. we do of course, as you mentioned, have an israeli government source saying yes there was a strike. it was limited. we don't have any other details. we do have reports out of iran this morning of explosions in, around, above the city of isfahan. it's home to several major facilities in the iranian nuclear program and home to the

factories that build the iranian drones, many of which were used in the strike against israel last weekend. also the same type of drones that were used by the russians against the ukrainians of course in that war. there's also a major air base in the area, home to o iran's americ amer american-built f-14. they seem to be down playing the effectiveness of the strike. that's something that the israeli government source told nbc news, that israel was currently engaged in trying to determine how effective the strike was, the iranians saying not very much. so they are presenting this calm from the city of isfahan. it appears to be limited at this time. >> the white house has made it clear they want to avert a wider war in the middle east. have we seen or heard any comments from the u.s. or israel about this?

>> reporter: so not yet, this coming overnight, we're going to see responses coming soon, but we do know the united states has of course been deeply involved in discussions, consultations, various diplomatic efforts with the israelis, obviously a close ally on what the response to last weekend's strike by iran would be. we know the u.s. was urging stra stra restraint and pushing them' aw from the nuclear facilities. >> we know the president arrived at the white house last night going straight to the west wing. breaking this morning. we have a house committee in a bipartisan vote advancing four foreign aid bills, setting them up for passage this weekend. but the speaker of the house is still facing resistance from his own party over that legislation. house republicans are threatening to remove speaker mike johnson from his position if he moves forward on votes for

israel and ukraine aid. johnson on thursday down-played the potential of the gop using the motion to vacate against him. and has voiced his continued support for ukraine even if it were to cost him his job. the house is aiming for a weekend vote on these bills. here in the u.s., protests continue on university campuses. more than 100 people were arrested at columbia university last night. after protesters set up an encampment at the school in support of gaza. the school calling nypd for assistance, and telling the student body in a memo that the encampment's disruptions presented, quote, a clear and present danger to the substantial functioning of the university. out west at usc, students held a silent march across campus in protest of the school's decision to cancel a speech from this year's pro-palestinian valedictorian. some campus groups raised concerns about the valedictorian's social media activity. the campus says the decision was

about safety and not freedom of speech. let's get an update on the historic trial of donald trump here in new york. the criminal hush money trial could soon make it to opening arguments. it has 12 seated members and one of the six alternates selected. brie jackson joins us now. the jury selection process didn't seem it would happen this quickly, because there were some set backs yesterday. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, frances. day three started with a little bit of drama. two jurors who had already been seated were dismissed. a nurse told the judge she had concerns about whether or not she could be impartial, and she also became worried about her identity becoming public. another juror was excused after prosecutors said he was arrested decades ago for tearing down conservative political ads. he did not reveal those charges on his juror questionnaire. jury selection will pick back up today, and there are still five alternates that need to be chosen. judge juan merchan hopes to begin opening arguments on

monday. the jury will hear arguments that mr. trump directed his lawyer, michael cohen, to pay off stormy daniels so she would not go public about an affair. and he is accused of doctoring business records to cover up the payments. mr. trump pled not guilty and has denied any relationship with daniels. the prosecution is refusing to turn over who their first three witnesses will be to the defense team. prosecutors say the risk is too great that mr. trump will say something about the witnesses on social media. and the judge says he can't blame them. a hearing on mr. trump possibly violating a limited gag order is expected next week frances? a maryland teen is in custody this morning accused of plotting a school shooting. law enforcement arrested 18-year-old alex yi for allegedly threatening to shoot

up a school. he shared the document with a friend that said it was a work the fiction. according to charging documents, that friend called police because they believe a school shooting was imminent. turning now to the latest on the idaho college murders. defense attorneys for bryan kohberger filing an updated alibi. dana griffin has the latest claims from his legal team and the reaction from the family of one of his alleged victims. >> reporter: an alleged alibi revealed in the deadly stabbing of four university of idaho students. madison mogen. xana kernodle included. his attorneys seay kohberger wa out driving to see the moon and stars. they say in a statement, we are not sure why it has taken over a year to come out as these don't

appear to be complicated activities, the family says. it's the same defense the judge questioned last year. [ inaudible ] no witnesses were included in the filing. kohberger's team will rely on analysis from a cell phone data expert. >> could this help or hurt his case? >> i think they had to file the alibi. i think they know it is a tough alibi. he's not arguing that he was hundreds of miles away in another state. he's not arguing that he simply wasn't in th was in the area, just not specifically there. >> reporter: but last january, police say cell phone data showed kohberger was attempting to conceal his location. his phone was turned off from 2:47 to 4:48 that morning, during the time of the murders.

kohberger's phone also pinged 12 times near the victims' house, months leading up to the slayings, prosecutors say. his dna was on a knife sheath left at the crime scene an after date noted. and he changed his car title five days after the killings, days before the arrest. kohberger was stopped in indiana on a road trip to pennsylvania with his father. driving a white hyundai elantra, the same vehicle caught on surveillance near the crime scene. >> mr. coe berger is standing silent. i'm going to enter not guilty pleas on each charge. the alleged weapon, a large, fixed-blade knife has never been found. severe storms tore across the midwest bringing thunderstorms, hail and tornados. in missouri, a system left behind a trail of destruction to power lines and infrastructure. roofs were torn off buildings and trees ripped out of the
