tv   NBC Bay Area News Tonight  NBC  April 29, 2024 7:00pm-7:31pm PDT

7:00 pm
right now, an nbc bay area news tonight. the protests about the war in gaza are spreading and getting louder. we're breaking down what's happening here in the bay area. also encouraging news about a crime epidemic on our local freeways. shootings are on the decline, but they're still at least one trouble spot. what our investigative unit has uncovered. plus, he got very
7:01 pm
agitated and ended up throwing punches at my security detail at it. we're talking to mayor matt mahan about his close call with the heckler on the streets of san jose, and about a former san jose fire captain recently busted in an undercover sting beyond words, the way they work and the efficiency. and to actually save this man's life and see him breathing again. and two hero nurses are with us tonight, credited with saving a man's life after he collapsed during a community basketball game. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight. i'm raj mathai. we want to begin on this monday with growing tensions between the protesters and university officials. really? across the country, thousands of students continue to protest the war in gaza. they want their colleges to call for a cease fire and also divest from israel . those protests have now spread to san francisco state today, a
7:02 pm
rally on campus with many students setting up an encampment that they want to show solidarity for other campus protests and carry on the tradition at san francisco state of public demonstrations. six months of protesting for just a cease fire. we're not even like we are saying, end the siege. but that's not even the main demand, just a cease fire. and it's been six months of that. and president biden can't even give us that. hey and down the peninsula at stanford, students have been camping out at white plaza for days now. the university has emailed or handed dozens of students a letter saying they could face suspension if they choose to remain on campus with those tents. protesters are demanding stanford to divest from companies who do business with israel. and at uc berkeley, the encampment remains at sproul plaza. students have been there since last week with the same demands of divestment. so far, uc says it has no plans to
7:03 pm
divest. another headline that we are watching the recount of that high stakes congressional race. we could have the results could by tomorrow. the recount is happening in the district 16 race to replace retiring congresswoman anna eshoo, the first count in the two county race determined that sam liccardo will move on to november. he won overwhelmingly. joe simitian and evan low, though, tied for second place. san mateo county has finished counting its ballots. santa clara county expects to finish tomorrow morning, and tonight we spoke to the man who formally requested that recount, his first television interview since requesting the recount. we asked jonathan padilla about who is funding the superpac that's paying for it. padilla is a former staffer for sam liccardo. political analysts say having a two person race instead of a three person race in november would benefit liccardo. now, there's been absolutely no talks with mr. liccardo or his campaign. anybody on the
7:04 pm
campaign? this is done completely without any of their knowledge. and you know, they even want us to do things we're not necessarily willing to do right now, like reveal the donors. we're going to do that following fec guidelines and mid-july, padilla has challenged 32 ballots that are still in envelopes across the district. he argues they should be added to the results. those challenges will have to be ruled on before the recount can be finalized by the state of california. also tonight, some encouraging news about our freeway shootings. our investigative unit has the new data showing that freeway shootings are trending down. but is it enough? take a look. here are the numbers. show the new numbers. in 2021, we saw a surge in freeway shootings 178 in the bay area alone. since then, you can see a slow decline. so far this year, 21 reports of freeway shootings in the bay area leaders are hopeful this downward trend continues. the
7:05 pm
reality is some of the streets in oakland are state highways. you know, international 42nd avenue. and but when it comes to the highways, i have noticed a difference. but we got a long ways to go. still, let's bring in nbc investigative producer sean myers, who's been digging into this data. sean, if this decline continues, what the numbers see there, would we be back to pre-pandemic crime levels? and what's the chp's analysis here? that's the hope, raj. right now, if the trend continues, as it has for the first couple of months, we are hoping to see numbers come back down to where they were in 2019. now, let's not forget, the 2021 was a huge spike. it was a doubling of that pre-pandemic number. and so this is somewhat of a return back to what could haven normal coming into the pandemic. still probably higher than a lot of us want to see it. it was this a one off or maybe a two off, meaning those pandemic years do i mean sociologists and crime experts say it's because
7:06 pm
of the pandemic or something unrelated. it's hard to attribute it to any one thing. what i will say is that these freeways go through neighborhoods, and those sections are going to be subject to the same sort of elements on the ground there in those neighborhoods. right. an altercation may start off of the freeway and then go into high speeds and continue through. and so we have to look at this holistically and understand that, you know, gun crime is gun crime on freeways. it's the same sort of thing that we talk about with shot spotting in oakland and the initiatives going on there. yeah. good point. this a lot of layers to this story. do these numbers match what we've been hearing from local police departments. is it on par. they seem to yeah certainly in oakland we've seen a dip in some of the crime categories. san francisco is reporting the same. and when we look at these highway shootings down in san jose or up in contra costa county, it's even, a brighter picture there just a handful of shootings there. so that's something to keep an eye on as well. in those outerlying areas. well, we hope that specifically in the east bay, since that's
7:07 pm
the biggest problem, those numbers go down. sean meyers, thanks for your analysis. appreciate it. let's move on. now. there's a security concern in san jose. this comes after members of the mayor's security detail got into a fistfight with the heckler. today. the police union sent a letter to san jose's police chief and city manager. that letter calls for mayor matt mahan security detail to be doubled. it says, quote, at no time should the mayor be accompanied by any fewer than two sworn cpd officers. joining us now is san jose mayor matt mahan. mayor mehan, nice to have you back on the program. a few things to talk about, but i do want to talk about security here, especially in this day and age with political leaders and their security detail. last week, one of your security guards got in a fight there with the it looks like a heckler about 15ft away from you. do you know what that was all about? right. and is everyone okay? yeah. look, i first of all, i want to say i'm grateful to my
7:08 pm
security detail for intervene and working very hard to de-escalate the situation. the individual is actually two feet from me, and it was his third time interrupting the interview when we tried to let him know that i was in the midst of an interview with a news organization, he he got very agitated and ended up throwing punches at my security detail. i'm grateful that the officer was able to kind of contain the situation and keep everybody safe. i visited him in the hospital. he's doing better, so there's an active investigation on. but yeah, i mean, look, i'm i am lucky to have someone who was armed with me at all times. that's a luxury. san jose residents don't have, which is why i'm very focused on ensuring that we make our city safe for everyone. that means more police staffing, more community policing, investing in technology, ensuring our diversion programs for addiction and job training are actually
7:09 pm
actually work and that people are taking advantage of them. but it was definitely a scary situation. the san jose police officers association is calling for your security be to be doubled, do you agree with that? well, look, that's a decision that the police department makes. they they have a specific unit that focuses on the security of the entire city council, and that's a decision they make. i, you know, personally just want as many resources as possible to go into keeping our residents safe, but that's ultimately the decision of the police department. another issue, not regarding the police department, but actually the fire department. a former safd fire captain, spencer parker, recently arrested in a sting out of sacramento. but he was the san jose fire fighter accused of sending inappropriate photos to someone he thought was a 13 year old girl. you asked your police department to launch its own investigation into what happened. when do you have to
7:10 pm
when do you when will you get those results of your own investigation? yeah, the allegations are just disgusting. and there's we need to do this investigation. the police department's in the midst of it. we should get information back. i want to make sure when there are allegations that are this serious, such a deep violation of public trust. i want to make sure we know everything about what this individual did while on duty. while here at our department, and just make sure we leave no stone uncovered. i think it's just really important that we're proactive about that. and as soon as the police department concludes its investigation, then we will share with the community what if what, if anything else we've learned about any of his actions or communications or whatever we learn about his behavior while an employee here? the allegations are not specific to anything he did while on duty. but i want us to fully investigate that. and that's that's the purpose i'm hoping to have information from that police investigation in the
7:11 pm
coming days. i know, in fact, later on tonight you'll be working on your budget with other city leaders you all are expecting. what about a $52 billion budget shortfall with a budget shortfall that usually leads to job cuts. do you expect job cuts within city employees? so we have not yet gotten the city manager's proposed operating budget that will come out by the end of the week. i believe there's a path here for us to make the investments we need to make on those basic core issues facing the community homelessness, crime, blight, the things that we all need to make, need the city to make progress on without having to do layoffs. i mean, that that is the goal is to really minimize any other service cuts. okay. mayor matt mahan in san jose, appreciate your time. have a good evening. thanks for having me. up next, two off duty nurses come to the rescue at an east bay basketball
7:12 pm
game. it's an incredible story how they jumped into action with the man's life on the line. those notes, those two nurses are going to join us live. and pandas. yup. they're returning to california sooner than we thought. you're watching nbc bay area new

was quick thinking good samaritans that helped save a life. it happened over the weekend in clayton during game for the all out sports league. this is an adult league. one of the players you see there suddenly collapses and appeared to stop breathing. two off duty nurses who happened to be in the stands rushed in to help. they gave the guy cpr and used a portable defibrillator to jumpstart his heart and get him breathing again. it was nice to see the community rally around this man, and i was rooting for him. we were all rooting for him. immediately after i walked up to both of them and i said, thank you so much for saving this guy's life. you guys are incredible. we're told the player who collapsed is expected to recover. joining us now, the nurses who helped save his life, doreen thrasher, who works at kaiser and on the phone with us is marcus walton, who works at john muir. nice to have both of you on the program with us, doreen, we'll start with you. i think i speak for a lot of people. thanks for doing what you do. how do you feel? how do
7:16 pm
you feel? i feel i feel blessed that i was able to bless him and help him to live and be be with his family. well that's incredible. and, marcus, let's bring you in here. did you and doreen know each other or did you just just team up here at the same time over the weekend? over the weekend? you know, i had just walked into the gym and thankfully doreen was already there already present, and we were able to work really well together. doreen, what did you see? what did you see? how critical was this? was this condition when you approached me? approached? it was pretty critical, he had a first fall where his teammates helped him up, and he appeared to tell them that he was okay. he took, i would say, like, two steps. and you just see him go down? of course i'm in the bleachers. you can see there how far the bleachers were. i was not for sure what was going, you know, how bad it was. but because of that fall, from the distance i was at, it didn't look good. so i wanted to go out right away
7:17 pm
and see. was he okay? and when i got there, he had very, very, deep, deep breathing that became very shallow. i immediately was feeling for a pulse, pulse was very, very light. pulse and at that time, when i was assessing him, that's when marcus came in. we both identified ourselves as nurses. and everything happened so fast, next minute, he's not breathing. there's no pulse. meanwhile, they have already called 911. someone was already getting an aed. marcus and i did our assessment. patient was non-responsive, not breathing, no pulse, and we began cpr. it's really amazing taking us through this. marcus. you guys are pros. if pros aren't there, if nurses aren't there, what advice do you give to just regular everyday people in an emergency like this ? sure. i mean, i think first things first, you want to make sure that they're, you know, if they're arousable or not, if they're not arousable, you can't
7:18 pm
get them to come to maybe check for a pulse. i recommend everybody learns how to check a pulse, if they have no pulse, go ahead and start compressions. that's the best thing you can do while you know the ambulance arrives. but always ask if there's an aed around. if there's an aed, it literally will walk you through the process of getting the pads on. it'll tell you what to do. start compressions. it'll tell you, hands off. we're going to analyze the heart rate. heart rhythm, but it'll walk you through those steps to kind of keep that patient viable until the ambulance gets there. so yeah, it's amazing. i'll end like i started. thank you both for doing what you do. doreen thrasher with kaiser marcus walton with john muir. appreciate your time. have a good evening. you as well. we're back in a moment

california sooner than we had expected. the san francisco zoo. we know this next year they'll be here. the san diego zoo, though the pandas are coming this summer. yun chuan and singh bao will be at the san diego zoo for the next ten years. we don't know their exact arrival date, but the habitat is now being prepped and a team from the san diego zoo just came back from visiting the pair in china and say each panda has its own distinctive personality and they both have very distinctive personalities. shen bao is just a beautiful four year old female
7:22 pm
panda, and she's incredibly playful, maybe even a bit mischievous, and she is just a pleasure to watch. and then yinchuan, the young male is adorable as well, and he is more more laid back. i'd say he definitely loves his bamboo. apparently they just love to eat bamboo, right? that's their meal of choice. san diego as host of the pandas back in the olden days, beginning in 1996. but their last panda was sent back to china in 2019, when the previous agreement ended. and i can just see, jeff, that the lines are going to be out the door in san diego and soon here at the san francisco zoo when these guys get here, it's going to be good to see. and i like it. the san diego zoo, how they have one that's got more of a laid back personality, and then one that is more vibrant because when you go there, sounds like the vibrant one is going to be going all the time to be able to see something all right. let's take it into that microclimate forecast and we'll show you what to expect here as we head through tomorrow. look at this sunset to live picture here from
7:23 pm
san francisco. beautiful day across the bay today. and as we head through tomorrow, we'll start it off on the chilly side and 40s. mostly clear for a lot of us. just a few clouds expected near the coastline. afternoon temperatures into the 70s throughout our inland valleys. that'll bring us to 74 here in morgan hill, 76 concord, 75 napa. go near the bay of the coast. we're going to be in the 50s to 60s now. mountain wind tomorrow will pick up 15 to 30mph, but i expect some of the strongest gusts here as we roll into wednesday morning, especially in the central valley, 20 to 50mph. also notice in the north bay, 20 to 50 there as well. that's wednesday morning. some of the east bay elevations and south bay mountains also getting 20 to 50. we'll start to see that wind calm down by wednesday night and right into thursday. now looking beyond this, we are looking at what appears to be some major changes for us by saturday's forecast. i'm tracking a storm system here, and what i'm closely monitoring is this storm system moves just a little bit more off to the south. we'd get into some heavier rain on
7:24 pm
saturday, a little bit more off to the north. we would see barely nothing. so real close call. we're going to continue to watch it. so right now on saturday, spotty rain to some heavier pockets. possible all, certainly some colder temperatures dropping down into the 60s. all right. let's spend some time on that 7-day forecast. and as we talked about the wind is going to be picking up here up to 15 to 45, maybe up to about 50mph there. wednesday morning we'll get some warm weather with that drier northerly wind up to 81 inland. and then those temperatures will start to drop off. we'll hit down to 63 here for the average on saturday. with that chance of rain will likely stay cool into sunday's forecast with 68. but is expected to be dry. then as we head into next monday, we'll get back up to 70 here and also some dry weather. so this rainfall coming in saturday not the best for weekend plans, but you know this will help to keep that fire danger down. getting any kind of rainfall this time of year. it really does wonders for us. so not too bad. i think
