president is put on leave. it's happening as the wave of protests continue across the country. also elderly renters given days to pay up or leave. we investigate the spike in evictions, plus a growing skincare craze among kids and teenagers. the warning from dermatologists about certain products and the push in sacramento to limit them. i think definitely in every job in
7:01 pm
sports, almost a shelf life. and for a coach and we go one on one with steve kerr, he opens up about his future with the warriors. good evening. this is nbc bay area news tonight i'm raj mathai. we want to start with our breaking news. a confrontation in berkeley. police say they are about to move in. in fact, police are on the scene right now. they're about to clear protesters from this university owned building. yes today a group of protesters occupied this abandoned house, which was boarded up a couple of years ago after a fire. the university has said that these protesters are not connected with the protesters who left their encampment at sproul plaza earlier this week. police officers have given the protesters warnings to leave. they did that about 30 minutes ago. this is a live stream here. looks like it's a it's kind of glitchy right there, but that was a live stream of the police
7:02 pm
officers near this building here. they say the protesters may be arrested as soon as this evening. even within the hour. officers are armed with beanbag rounds and tear gas. we do have reporters arriving on the scene shortly. we'll update this as it develops again, this is that abandoned university home in berkeley, right near people's park. it is university owned. protesters have occupied this building as of yesterday and last night. and tonight, about 30 minutes ago, police officers arrived in force saying those protesters needed to clear the area. so we expect some sort of confrontation at some point this evening. again, we will update this as the evening develops. also tonight, the president of sonoma state university has been placed on leave. this comes after he struck a deal with protesters on campus. the protesters had been camped out on campus since april 26th. they were demanding an end to the war and for the university to divest in companies linked to israel. on monday, the school's
7:03 pm
president, mike lee, announced he reached an agreement with those protesters that deal included pledging to seek divestment strategies, along with ending collaborations with israeli academic and research institutions. yesterday, the csu chancellor placed lee on administrative leave for insubordination. some faculty members were unhappy with president lee's actions, but others believe he deserves a second chance. i think there's a lot of repair work that needs to be done on our campus, and i hope that president lee can come back and facilitate that, and i hope that we can have some more open and safe dialogs about it in the fall, there were messages of support for president lee written in chalk on the university sidewalk. you see it right there. but those messages were washed away this morning, and some tense moments at the state capitol. this is in sacramento, of course, a potential anthrax threat, forced evacuations of the senate and all staff. according to a memo
7:04 pm
sent from the secretary of the senate, a suspicious package was delivered to the ninth floor of the swing space building. that's about two blocks from the actual capitol building and includes the governor's office. the package contained a threat that there was anthrax inside. all staff members were asked to leave that building as quickly as possible. the substance was tested and determined not to be anthrax. all staff was then allowed to go back inside. another headline that we're watching a record day on wall street. plenty of people making money. but what about all the people who aren't? the dow crossing 40,000 for the first time in its history? to put that number in perspective, the dow has now doubled since 2020. tech stocks, especially in the bay area, have been soaring, fueling this rise. also, the overall economy has given a lot of people reason to be optimistic about the future. the main takeaway from all of this is that we've had a remarkably
7:05 pm
resilient and robust economy. the job market continues to be strong, the demand for workers continues to outstrip supply, and there is a prospect for lower interest rates in the fall . and now the flip side, not everyone is sharing in this economic success. on the same day, the market hit record numbers. look at this. the line for that weekly food distribution in san jose spanned three blocks. volunteers at the crossroads, calvary chapel say this is the case. every thursday , as people struggle to fill a growing need. also tonight, san francisco has launched night markets san jose is now launching community block parties. this is all to help revitalize downtown businesses. the first party is tonight. in fact, here's a live look in downtown san jose. this is the first in a series of community block parties being put on by the city of san jose in a different district each month. tonight, about 20 merchants are setting up there at the historic
7:06 pm
district around fountain alley between first and second streets. a recent study of foot traffic downtown shows that actually downtown san jose is up in foot traffic more than 20, while many other major cities, including san francisco, is down. but you see, this party's just getting started right about now. there's going to be a lot of food, music, entertainment, and of course, all the bars hoping to enjoy in the business. well, here's a story that we've been covering extensively housing. and tonight our focus is on the rising number of elderly people who are in danger of losing their homes, renters and landlords in a tough position here during the pandemic places like oakland had eviction moratoriums. that meant landlords could not evict tenants who were unable to pay their rent. but in oakland, that moratorium expired last summer, and when it did, landlords were allowed to begin demanding up to a year's worth of back rent. they could also evict tenants who didn't pay up. we spoke with an 80 year old, zeta flowers.
7:07 pm
she received a notice from her landlord demanding she pay $18,000 in owed rent or move out in three days. what went through your mind? what went through my mind, first of all, is they didn't care to expect me on a short notice to move that fast. like in three days. impossible. yeah, three days does seem impossible. joining us now is our senior investigator, bigad shaban. so first of all, landlords evicting tenants who don't pay. that's legal, especially after that moratorium. but what options do these tenants have? well, it is legal, but with some caveats because we are talking about the period during the moratorium. in fact, tenants have the legal right to actually fight off an eviction if they can show evidence that they basically were a victim of some kind of substantial financial hardship during the moratorium. important to note that could potentially
7:08 pm
prevent the tenant from being evicted, raj. but that is not going to change the fact that they still owe that money, and landlords have the legal right to go after them. so she didn't have the money. she got three days. she says, where do people go? where did she go? well, in this instance, what ended up happening is she reached a settlement with her landlord. the landlord ended up essentially forgiving the back rent, allowing her to stay there if she agreed to move out by next month. obviously every situation is different, but you mention where do they go? i mean, that's part of the problem when you talk about the long term ramifications of this. seniors are now the fastest growing population experiencing homelessness. the total numbers nationally, about 140,000 and counting. that's pretty sobering . here we just talking about oakland. are we seeing other areas play out? i'm guessing this is happening in other areas. unfortunately. so. so legal advocates in oakland tell us they're seeing about a 17% spike in the number of seniors needing help to fight off evictions. we heard from attorneys in san francisco and berkeley, raj, they're seeing similar spikes. you also learned that people were getting eviction notices before that
7:09 pm
moratorium was over. now we're getting into some some real gray area. i mean, this was a period where that was not supposed to happen. in fact, it was considered illegal. but through a public records request, we obtained records from the department of housing in oakland. we found out that actually, hundreds of eviction notices went out to low income seniors. how did this happen? who were the landlords? where was the oversight? we're going to go over all of that tonight, raj, as part of our full investigation tonight at 11, we'll see you at 11. and again, this is coming on a day where the record, the dow hit a record number. but there are so many people not taking being part of this success. thank you. bigad a huge juxtaposition. yeah. thank you. let's move on now. governor newsom, once again is in the global spotlight. he's at the vatican talking climate change. the governor made a speech to world leaders during a climate conference hosted by pope francis. he called out former president trump and fossil fuel companies for fighting against efforts to go green. he also highlighted the achievements california has made when it comes to setting goals and meeting them. let me give you a
7:10 pm
proof point as i conclude my remarks. i come here today. day 3232 straight days over one month, where california's economy is literally being run with 100% clean energy, 100% 32 days straight, proving the paradigm that this can be done in every case, exceeding our nation leading goals is pretty impressive. number. let's bring in investigative reporter jaxon van derbeken who fact checked the governor's statement. there jackson. we just heard that 32 days of clean energy. first of all, is it true? and what exactly does that mean? does that mean we don't need pge anymore for a month? no, it doesn't mean we don't need pge. in fact, pge has led the way in trying to get these backup batteries, which are key to providing the kind of power that's needed to fully make the grid on this for ability of
7:11 pm
allowing the energy to come. that's not used by gas plants and other polluting. so although nuclear power is part of it, the idea is to have enough backup power so the entire grid can operate without having to rely on dirty or non-green, renewable resources. sure. and was he was the governor factual there 32 straight days of clean energy that the state ran on? that's correct. basically what it means is that if demand, if there's enough battery power and other supplies to meet the demand that it are green, the state can and does operate without, having to tap the dirtier resources, the greenhouse emitting resources. and jackson, what happens in a few a few weeks from now, for example, when the weather heats up, people start to crank their air conditioning, especially in the east bay and south bay and north bay. then what? we still have enough to. is it sustainable? well, in fact, we
7:12 pm
have because of all the rain, there's additional hydroelectric resources as well. so we have this, lucky position where we now have 10,000mw of battery storage. we once only had 700mw. that was in 2019. today we have over 10,000mw to draw upon. and we also have additional hydroelectric supplies. so summer is looking pretty optimistic when it comes to power provisions there. this is real. this seems to be very encouraging here. what's the impact on consumers as we wrap it up? well, this costs money. i mean obviously building these giant battery farms that are in some cases on the sites of power plants that once emitted fossil fuels. so it's not cheap and it's going to take some time. they want to operate ultimately 50,000mw of battery supplies. and that's going to take possibly two decades. okay. jaxon van derbeken fact checking the governor who was factual here in this case, thank you.
7:13 pm
jackson. up next, a lot of tweens and teenagers, maybe someone you know in your family are interested in skin care. a warning from dermatologists, though, and lawmakers about certain types of products that they're putting on their face. and how much longer does steve kerr plan to stay with the warriors? that's the million dollar question. his candid answer to us during our one on one interview. you're watching nbc bay area news tonight.

air police in riot gear about to clear protesters from an occupied building at uc berkeley yesterday, a group put up barricades around uc berkeley's abandoned ana head alumni hall, which was boarded up a couple of years ago after a fire. what you're seeing now is those police officers within the hour surrounding that home there, that that abandoned home, this is near channing way and telegraph avenue, right near people's park. the university has said that these protesters inside and on that property are not connected with the protesters who left the air encampment at sproul plaza earlier this week. so this is a separate group of protesters, also calling for an end to the war in gaza. the university says the protesters may be arrested. officers are armed with beanbag rounds and tear gas. the officers announced that those
7:17 pm
people need to clear this area. they announced that about an hour ago, so we could see a potential confrontation at some point. this evening. well, let's move on. have you heard of this? they're called sephora. kids, children, tweens and teenagers who are in the skin care. but now there is a concern. the growing craze is being fueled by a lot of social media videos, including on tiktok, often showing people sharing their makeup and skin care routines. but experts have warned that some of the products can cause more harm than good on young skin. that includes items that contain anti-aging ingredients. this week, a group of 20 california lawmakers sent a letter right there to the personal products council urging that council to take action. the council represents 600 cosmetics and personal care companies. the lawmakers want the council to share any concrete actions it's taking to address the issue of children buying anti-aging products. one of the lawmakers, state assembly member alex lee
7:18 pm
of san jose, also backed a bill that would limit the sale of anti-aging products to kids under the age of 13. that bill died today in committee, but assembly member lee says he's not giving up. it could be quite damaging to young, sensitive skin and actually have long term effects. that's why when we brought the bill, we actually had when we when we presented the bill in its first committee, we actually had a ten year old testified saying that it was actually so painful after using the product that she could barely sleep. so this is joining us now is doctor zakia rahman, a clinical professor of dermatology at stanford health care. doctor almond, thanks for being with us. so just help us out here. what types of products are teenagers using right now and what's the potential danger? hi raj, thanks for having me. i think the big concern is that there's so many products that teenagers are using. when i hear people's skin regimens are more than mine, so they have 1012 steps in their morning and evening skin regimen, then i get concerned because those products together can cause a lot of
7:19 pm
irritation and allergy and skin. what should be done to warn parents and kids about what's happening here? is there more that needs to be done? i think that there's a lot of opportunity, both for parents, other teens, to support each other. certainly the health care community and social media companies to warn the effects that this these products can have not only the skin, but really the mental health of these teens and young people. what ingredients are we talking about here that we should be on the lookout for? and i ask because i have a teenage son who uses stuff for acne on his face. but, but but i'm not aware of some other of the bad stuff here. yeah, i think retinol was one of the products they talked about, and those are actually really good. and a lot of teens use them because as they get hormones, they get acne. so i think it's fine to use that. but when you add it to other ingredients, particularly anti-aging ingredients, you can cause a lot of irritation and allergic contact dermatitis, which can really start a vicious cycle of your skin just being constantly irritated. okay it's
7:20 pm
a good reminder for parents and anyone else that are watching doctor zakiya rahman from stanford. appreciate your time. thanks all right, let's move on. check the calendar here. the opening ceremony for the olympics is 71 days away. warriors head coach steve kerr will lead a super team into paris. but after paris, how long will kerr be leading the warriors? we sat down with him at chase center. yep he does work. show up to work in the off season. 58 years old, ten seasons and four nba titles with the warriors. but the last two years? difficult to say the least. dealing with all the draymond drama, not making the playoffs and yeah, kerr says it's harder to communicate with his younger players. i asked him point blank, how much longer does he want to stay on this job? i think definitely in every job in sports. almost a shelf life. and for a coach and i think i will feel it when that comes. and i did not feel it
7:21 pm
this past year in terms of, you know, it's time to leave. i feel like we've got a couple of years here with steph, draymond, hopefully klay. we're still going. we're also bringing on a whole group of young players who are doing really well. i'm loving my job every day. i love coming into this building every day. what's not to love about the bay, so i can't wait for next season with the warriors. but there's going to come a time and maybe it's in two years when my contract's up. maybe that's the time where it's time for me to move on and time for the warriors to seek new blood and new ideas. and we'll both know when that time comes. and i can tell you one thing. it will be a very amicable parting of the ways. whenever that happens, maybe a couple of years more of steve kerr, always thoughtful in his responses. we also talked
7:22 pm
about the new wnba team that's playing, going to be playing next year at chase center. the valkyries. he talked about the wnba compared to the nba and where the women's game is right now. in his mind, in the nba, the acceleration has happened and has kind of already happened , you know? so i think in a lot of ways there's a lot of room for growth in the wnba with things like analytics and shot profiles and styles of play. the talent level has just skyrocketed. so i just see a really high ceiling for the league. yeah, you get a real excitement that steve kerr obviously. so into the nba but really excited about the wnba as well. we're going to check in
