have you ever wondered what makes the bay area coastline so foggy this time of year? well, meteorologist kari hall is actually going to take an in-depth look through the gloom. this is today in the bay area. and if you look through that gloom, you can see the weekend. it is friday morning for you want to say good morning to you? i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but let's see if there's any gloom out there this morning. yeah start out cloudy again. it's missing and drizzling in san francisco. you can see it on the camera lens there as the temperature is now at 55 degrees. as you move away from the coastline, it's still cloudy. we all see that marine layer pushing across the bay area, which will cause our temperatures to warm up a lot more slowly. today and give us a nice and mild afternoon even after it clears. so right now we're at 52, in san rafael. it is 58 in san jose and 55 in san francisco. and we're going to see our trend warming up slowly because of the gradual clearing
6:02 am
of the sky, and will be at 71 in san jose eventually headed for 77 degrees and 75 in dublin. fremont, also 75 and 68, in san mateo. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. and, mike, you have a freeway closure right now. yeah. or at least that's the latest report from chp. they say all lanes of northbound 680 are still blocked by a crash and potentially debris. what's going on is they're waiting for a larger tow truck to pull a pickup. and the trailer with the boat on it that it was hauling north on 680, just around auto mall parkway. we've had this portion closed on the map sensors, at least for quite some time now, over a half an hour. but we're looking at no major backup approaching mission boulevard. so whatever the case, north 880 through fremont is fine. i think auto mall parkway joins in just past that crash. but again, those sensor reads are not specific to the foot. so we're going to track that update from chp. everything else shows a friday lighter build. but look at the san mateo bridge. oh just cleared. there are some flashing lights eastbound coming toward

the hayward side. not a lot of slowing, but i'm tracking that to back to you. all right, speaking of the east bay, mike, new overnight chp investigating a deadly crash there. this is along 580 in oakland. now, this is new video from that scene. this is near the grand avenue off ramp. investigators are telling us this happened a little after midnight. two vehicles crashing there along the eastbound lanes. one of those vehicles overturning near the center. divide at least one person killed. now, a witness says that she was speaking with her cousin nearby when that truck flipped. at least five times, hitting a pole. she says the accidents in that area are not uncommon. the traffic here is terrible. this is probably the fourth accident i've seen right here. someone is came off the freeway and hit her car. it's a fence that used to be here, but the fence is gone because people keep coming off the freeway and crashing into it. now at last check, all of those lanes have been opened there. this was at the eastbound ramp, grand avenue, this morning . laura. in just a few hours,

the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi is set to face sentencing. this marks the end of a year and a half court battle to put david depape behind bars. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco, with more on what we expect to play out today. ginger good morning laura. prosecutors are asking for a 40 year sentence for david depape. attorneys say they want depape to serve a longer sentence than what is recommended by the us probation office, which recommends 25 years in prison. depape was convicted of breaking into the pelosi home in pacific heights here in san francisco, attempting to kidnap then speaker nancy pelosi and instead attacking her husband, paul pelosi. in the early morning hours of october 28th, 2022, just days before the midterm election, depape admitted during trial testimony that he broke into the pelosi home. he also acknowledged striking paul pelosi with a hammer after police showed up. that bloody attack on pelosi was captured on
6:05 am
police body cam footage. depape was convicted of the federal charges against him in november of last year, but he is also charged in state court with assault with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon . he has pleaded not guilty to those charges. now jury selection for the state case is expected to happen next week, may 22nd. we will continue to watch that case develop and unfold as we as well as as well as watching today's developments in the federal case, and we'll update you on air and online. laura. yeah it's been interesting to see how it all plays out, seeing that, you know, we were there the night when it all happened. all right. thank you very much, ginger. that's right. well, san francisco woman opening up after another woman attacked her from behind in a neighborhood corner store. now, we have to warn you, some of the video that we're about to show may be disturbing. now, the surveillance video shows kate ryken at her potrero hill neighborhood corner store on tuesday. see you there. waving there at the owner. and

then you see right here, this woman comes in in the darker sweatshirt, hitting her with that bag over the head, then started punching kate. kate says. we did find out that bag that she was hit right there actually has a liquor bottle inside. it all lasted less than 10s, but it really left ryken terrified when it happened on tuesday afternoon. i was afterwards. i was just in complete and total shock yesterday i was crazy angry and today i'm just completely overwhelmed. so we'll see what tomorrow brings. well, police later arrested the woman believed to be involved here. police plead. police say she pleaded not guilty yesterday to assault charges. now we have learned that she's also being held on a parole violation. well, just into our newsroom, a bizarre morning for the world's top golfer who police arrested ahead of the second round of the pga championship. it actually all started with a completely unrelated, deadly traffic accident near the tournament site in louisville, kentucky. this is the video of that
6:07 am
incident, which involved a shuttle bus transporting people to the event. the bus struck a pedestrian, forcing traffic to shut down. and here's where the story got a little strange. espn reports. number one ranked golfer scottie scheffler attempted to drive around a closure when officers tried to stop him. scheffler apparently ignored the order and ended up in handcuffs. police have now charged him with three misdemeanors a felony charge of assaulting a police officer as well. 606 for you this morning and if you know contra costa county fair, it is now up and running and there are some rules you need to be mindful of. so yesterday was opening night. teenagers are welcome, but you're going to need an adult to chaperon you. so there is this new chaperon policy there for the next few days. anyone 18 will need to have an accompanied person with them, an adult who's at least 25 years old. each chaperon can only have four minors with them. now. this is in response to a series of
6:08 am
fights between groups of teenagers at the fairgrounds last year. and a lot of people tell us that it is sad to see that they have to have chaperons now, but they understand why. that's crazy. all the kids in high school or school, they can't get dropped off no more and come by themselves. you know what? i think it's a pretty good idea. i know they had a little bit of problems last year, so i think it's better that they have more supervision now. the county fair isn't the only place that they've made those changes due to teenage brawls. last year, great america also instituted a chaperon policy. that's where anyone under the age of 18 will need a chaperon. it is 608 right now. taking a live look in san francisco, and a summer gets a little closer to the city by the bay. better be your chances of seeing fog. so brace for may gray june gloom no sky july and august. meteorologist kari hall explains why the city by the bay can get so gray. starting at this time of the year, we're settling into a pattern of coastal fog and cool
6:09 am
temperatures and inland sunshine, as well as warm weather and you may well know the cause of our microclimates are due in part to the proximity to the ocean, as well as the hilly terrain and the valleys. now the water at our coastline flows down from alaska and is very cold, averaging only at about 55 degrees. the marine layer of humid air is pushed over the water and to our coast and creates a breezy, chilly wind with that constant pacific high pressure pushing that moist air farther inland. and as temperatures in the valleys heat up, you get a wide range in temperatures as the fog lingers for most of the day. bottom line is to always keep a warm jacket handy all throughout the summer. now let's check in with mike for a look at this morning's commute. yeah, look, i got i got one section you're going to want to wait for. let's talk about gas prices real quickly though. another local listed in the ten best. so there are two now. both in livermore. both for 24. will shout out to fox see gasoline on

southbound. your commute into the south bay is fine. that's okay. right now, this. look ahead, though, this is the closing we're talking about. all but one lane will be closed south from al costa on 680 south down to the dublin interchange. that goes on starting tonight all the way through the weekend. so there will still be one lane open that there's going to be a lot of slowing south out of danville and san ramon down toward the dublin area. and east 37 will be closed all weekend as well. completely closed. so there's your alternate to get back to vallejo from novato. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. we are moving you forward into a new energy landscape. we have to continue to upgrade our grid, but designing it specifically for renewables next on today in the bay, the work solar experts are working on. as california and the nation hit a major milestone in solar power, president biden working on getting the black vote after polls show that he's weak in that area. let's go out to the big board this morning. yesterday we went over 40 k on

speech this weekend at morehouse college, a historically black college in atlanta. and today, he'll give a speech over at the national museum of african american history and culture. and scott, a sense of pattern here. there's a pattern, a strategy, right? because let's add to that. the president spent yesterday very, quite rightly, celebrating the 70th anniversary of brown versus the board of education, which ended separate but equal in u.s. schools. to be fair, the white house has been marking that anniversary for quite some time. yeah. here's a pattern, a strategy shift. president biden actively campaigning for the black vote after polls showed some black and latino americans are planning to vote for trump or vote. not at all. here's the head of the naacp at the white house on thursday. well, i don't accept the premise that there's
6:44 am
any erosion of black support. i believe that polls have proven itself to be untrue for the last four election cycles. what i do believe is we are in a crisis of our democracy. we must decide whether or not we're going to have a functioning democracy. that's representative of all of the citizens, or something less than that. no trump trial today. so that former president trump can attend his son baron's high school graduation will resume on monday. yesterday, so many republican members of congress showed up in new york. republican leaders on the hill in washington had to suspend some votes because they didn't have enough people. radical left wants president trump to simply go away. and if president trump just went away, this would all go away as well. they do not want him to be in this race. they know that he is the number one candidate for president of the united states. lauren boebert, social media quick to point out congresswoman boebert did not attend her own 18 year old son's trial in colorado for
6:45 am
theft, but she did attend attend trump's. back in washington, a house committee voted to find attorney general merrick garland in contempt for not turning over audio of an interview of president biden made by special counsel robert her. this is the interview in which biden seemed, in his description of it, to struggle, to remember details. now, we know that because there are transcripts of that interview and the special counsel published its report explaining why it didn't charge the president and her testified before congress back in march. so we heard all about her assessment that the president was an elderly man, his word with a poor memory. what we didn't get to hear was the actual audio or videotape of biden speaking, which biden's critics want their hands on, but they don't explain why or how the audio would tell them more than the transcript. they already have. now, yesterday in that committee criticizing garland for not releasing the audio, republican congresswoman marjorie taylor greene started
6:46 am
making fun of another congresswoman. eyelashes personal ad hominem attacks are not allowed in congress. democrat alexandria ocasio-cortez asked the greene's comments be removed from the official record. i do have a point of order, and i would like to move to take down miss greene's words. that is absolutely unacceptable. how dare you attack the physical appearance of another person? are your feelings hurt? her words down. 000 girl, baby girl. oh really? don't even play baby girl i don't think we are going to move and we're going to take your words down. i second that motion. the trial of democratic senator bob menendez continues. yesterday, jurors in the case got their first look at the actual gold bars and the money found in the menendez home. prosecutors say they were part of a bribery payment to the senator and his wife, laura. wow. always something interesting. thank you. scott. it is 646 right now. solar energy is helping to move the
6:47 am
bay area forward and the nation as well. the u.s. just hit 5 million solar installations, and we can take particular pride in that number right here in california, because we have the most solar capacity out of any state. san francisco actually has the most solar jobs of anywhere because of so many companies originating here. the bay area was so open to the idea early on. here's the head of the solar energy industries association. we installed one our first 1 in 1973, and then we took 40 years to get to a million, and we only took eight years to go from 1 million to 5 million. and so it's representative and indicative of just the rapid growth of solar in this country. she says that to keep moving forward, we need to pressure our leaders to update the grid to support renewable energy. and california needs to pair solar with storage . be sure to tune in to today in the bay. on tuesday, meteorologist cory hall is shining a light on the ups and

downs properties that owners face with solar panels. and for more stories like this, head to our website nbcbayarea.com and check out our climate in crisis page. well this weekend, a milestone for the santa cruz boardwalk, an iconic ride hitting the century mark. it's got your name all over it, mark. oh, i've been on it. you know, once they told me i was too tall to sit in the front because my legs are too long. yeah, yeah, believe it or not. so look, the giant dipper, you see. right there opened in 1924, 100 years ago. since then, more than 68 million people have taken on that ride. park workers say that they are really taking good care of that wooden coaster. they even hit that ride every day just to make sure it works. i'm glad of that. the boardwalk will be celebrating the historic coaster all summer long. visitors will be able to ride it for just $1 every wednesday

through august, and there's also going to be special fireworks show marking the 100th anniversary tomorrow night. all right, so much fun to see there. well, happening tonight, a popular free outdoor movie event returning to san francisco. this oh, man. she looks just like selena's. she's. everyone. come on, man, let's go. let's go. best best best best best. hey, can you guys help us out? we're stuck. it is selena. selena's it is the film selena opens this year's sundown cinema events, which includes seven free outdoor movies shown in seven different parks. tonight's movie plays in dolores park. it's a sing along, so get ready local food trucks will be there, along with some pre-show entertainment . planners say any sf parks alliance member receives
6:50 am
guaranteed seating. and this is a movie that i don't care. whenever it's on, i can sit and watch it. oh yeah, it's just so great. that's one of the great ones. very nice. come on. anything for salinas? everything. salinas exactly. all right, all right, i want you to be able to see the screen there. yeah, that's going to be an issue. we're going to see some fog rolling through, and it's going to be off and on throughout the weekend. we're seeing the marine layer giving us the cloudy start this morning over fremont a little bit of a light wind. and we're going to see the sun peeking out later on this morning for now, we're cloudy in the upper 50s and then we'll start to see more sunshine here in fremont from about 10:00 on. throughout the rest of the day, our temperatures will warm up into the low 70s. their mid 70s in fremont and 68 in san mateo and in novato, 75 there, while san francisco will stay in the 60s for today. and we'll also be seeing the same temperatures that spread from
6:51 am
low 60s near the coast to upper 70s for the inland valleys. tomorrow in san jose, we're looking at a high of 78 degrees, and on sunday, also 78 for santa rosa. and if you're going to be watching the game tonight on nbc bay area or going to oracle park, you want to bundle up, you need a hoodie. the scarf, the gloves, all of that stuff. it's going to be chilly and windy as our temperatures come down to the mid 50s, but definitely warmer weather in san jose or santa clara for the bay fc game will be in the low 70s and then dropping down to the low 60s. and we also have the valkyrie's block party at the chase center tomorrow 2 to 6. it's going to be so much fun with a lot of sunshine, great weather to also enjoy the celebration of our new team. now we're also going to talk about the coastline because i know a lot of people want to head to the beach once those temperatures warm up. and you heard it here, that highway one is open going through big sur and farther south, it's going to
6:52 am
be in the low 60s for highs, and you may see a little bit of sunshine. i do think it's going to stay cloudy there and our temperatures will be in the mid 70s and warming up just slightly for the middle of next week. not a whole lot of changes here. we're starting out with some clouds and fog in san francisco. we'll see that continue throughout the weekend. and now mike, you still have that alert for the san mateo bridge? we do, but the backup mostly cleared for the eastbound direction. we still have a disabled vehicle blocking your far right lane. as you're traveling over to the hayward side. looks like another crew cleared. so we just have some flares and one vehicle still there. it's moving slowly, so that might be completely clearing. now westbound is building and also distracted. so there is more slowing in the westbound direction. you see it right there. not a major issue friday commute not a major issue. also not an issue anymore. this northbound closure is now just a little slowing. north on 680 up to auto mall parkway. the earlier crash is cleared out of the roadway, but there were six vehicles, including a trailer and a boat on that trailer, so there may still be activity over there as
6:53 am
you're traveling up in towards sunol. everything else through the east bay contra costa county looks great. friday light highway four shows some slowing 37 through the north bay and the richmond bridge, as well as the bay bridge, but the bay bridge backup is moving visibly coming off the overcrossing. not so bad. of course we're not there. back to you. thank you very much, mike. happening now, a heads up for people living in the east bay. you may see some flaring coming from the martinez refinery through the end of the month. the refinery company there say it's due to work to complete a maintenance project. it involves a $70 million in equipment upgrade. and we're back in just three minutes with a lot more of what's happening. this morning, including those top stories, including a deadly crash in oakland. we have the shocking new details about what played out in that scene overnight, plus sentencing day for the man who attacked nancy pelosis husband in their san francisco home, the possible prison time

attacked her husband, paul pelosi, with a hammer. he's also charged in state court with assault with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. he has pleaded not guilty. now to a live look at the abandoned university building near uc berkeley's campus. this is where police cleared out protesters last night. you may recall it was taken over wednesday night by pro-palestinian protesters. police shut down the nearby streets, outnumbering the group of those who are protesting. they're allowing police to arrest 12 people inside the building. the takeover of the building happened just days after a nearby encampment was disbanded. after student organizers came to an agreement on their demands with the university. now, the university says the group who occupied the abandoned building, not affiliated with the student group on campus, all of highway one through big sur open again this morning after storms in late march triggered slides and forced some closures lasting weeks. the reopening also comes a little early, more than a week sooner than initial projections.

for the past two months, locals were relying on convoys twice a day to get in and out of that area, be aware if you are heading further south, an unrelated closure in the town of lucia remains intact, with no reopening date set just yet. all right, and look, that forecast for us, it looks great, but it's going to be gray along the coastline. and our inland areas are going to see sunshine for the afternoon temperatures in the upper 70s. more of that into the weekend as well as early next week, and only a high of about 65 today in san francisco. and we're looking at richmond. there is an issue at the toll plaza at richmond bridge in toward san rafael. it's in the gore point. see that split point? that's called the gore point, where roads either split apart or come together, and that's what's going on. no major issues, especially on the span itself. san mateo bridge coming toward us. indeed, that alert has cleared. so eastbound 92 now cleared of all incidents, but westbound. well, that just has the commute. well, the today show just moments away, but we continue today in the bay on roku and other streaming platforms live at 8:00. the
